Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee. I never thought I would find a polyhydranious CS shout at the DC twin! But here you Grin

Toffee you're not fat. You're well on your way to goal! In the last 3 months you've lost and lost weight whilst I've spent months bobbing around in a massive stall. At this rate you're sure to get to your GW before I do. Grin

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 21:11

Just wanted to pop in with my little news. Its not exciting, but its made me smile. Once or twice a week I will come upstairs and catch up on my programs while DH stays downstairs and watches the things I don't like. I used to bring chocolate or biscuits with me, but recently its been just a can of Pepsi max (I know its not good for you, but 2 or 3 cans of Pepsi max a week is way better than my old habits of 2 or 3 cans of full fat coke a day) with me. Anyway I've not opened my can and just popped down to the kitchen for some water. I was actually craving the taste of water Grin Like I said its not much, but its something that im really happy with.

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 21:11

Oooh ELR. Thanks Thanks. Another afternoon tea place to explore.

Sorry to hear of the stretch marks. It's hard to tell how bad mine are because my skin is sort of loose and wrinkly. Not nice. Oh well my boobs survived and don't look too bad. And you can't have it all.

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 21:13

Biscuits!! NSV to you !!! Grin Excellent.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 19/12/2013 21:13

christmas wow-wee another hottie pic up

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 21:15

Thanks ELR. Your afternoon tea looks delicious! That will definitely be on my treat list for next year!

Going to bed in a right hump. Kids barely in bed themselves after putting them to bed ages ago. I have to turn in because a) if I don't then DS1 will keep getting up and b) I'm so close to ruining my FD and this is the only way I can distract myself by sleeping and I need to complete 2 FDs this week if I'm ever going to achieve SWATH.

Hate going to bed angry. Plus I feel sh*t that I've spent the whole evening shouting at them all. And yet evey time I threaten to tell Santa that he is misbehaving he has a right f'ing fit at me and still acts like a PITA!!!

Anyway enough now. I'm sure it'll all seem silly in the morning and I know in about 5 mins I will be in his bedroom making up with him. Really should be a better role model myself in the first place Sad

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 21:15

Can I call that a NSV? I didn't even plan on water, I just thought I don't want that can, but want water instead.

Breadandwine · 19/12/2013 21:15

Haven't read the thread past 12:08, so I'm not up-to-date with later happenings.

But I wanted to say that this is a most supportive thread, with wonderfully empathetic posters. Anyone should feel free to let rip or rant about happenings in their lives (jobs, kids, uncaring/selfish partners, etc) - and the rest of us will be there to pick up the pieces! Flowers

(BTW, I, too, get that 'TOTM' feeling - only in my case the feeling is merely to thank my lucky stars I'm a bloke! Grin )

(Actually, since my wife's menopause was long ago, I no longer have PMT in my life. [Not that I don't bear the scars!] Grin )

I've just completed a 24hour fast on coffee and hot water and ended it with a chunky, spicy, veg soup - and now I'm stuffed. Over-stuffed, really. I shouldn't have eaten the last third of it, but it was too good to leave. Turned into a bit of a veg frenzy! Grin

About changes in eating habits: I haven't had a biscuit for about a fortnight! Unheard of, back along. There's a packet of ginger biscuits in the cupboard, unopened - it's been there for ages. About the only (food) vice I've still got is a predilection for Lindt's Chilli choc (£1.50 at Sainsbug's, down from £1.80). I had no less than 4 pieces (yes, FOUR) in 2 hours yesterday!

That's the sort of Choc Frenzy you can expect after you've been maintaining for a while, folks! Smile

And thanks for all the gorgeous pics you've been posting, recently! Very pleasing to the eye! Keep 'em coming, won't you? Wink

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 21:18

Biscuits sounds like an NSV to me!

Toffee sounds like my lot tonight too. Grrrrrrr

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 21:18

Crossed posts there MrsF im on my phone so it makes me slower.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 21:27

Smile MrsF

NSV there Biscuits!! I have had a few moments like that and it is a great feeling, isn't it? I often imagine what it would be like to have X when I think I am hungry and mostly I don't fancy it as I know I am not hungry. Little bit scared about fasting tomorrow thoughConfused and feel crap I said fucking in front of the kids.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 21:33

Kitchen closed , so today's FD will be 310 cals. It was much easier than Tuesday, maybe because I had 100g smoked salmon and lemon. That seems the most satisfying food on FDs for me. Anyone else find that ?

I (hopefully) won't eat until lunch tomorrow, which is our Xmas party at work, so that will be sub-400 cals in 45 hrs. Much longer fast than usual, but I am also eating a 2nd big meal out in the evening.
Xmas Grin

I'm typing away sporting my green face mask again and I just remembered I must wash it off now.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 21:34

Well done on the NSV, Biscuits

TalkinPeace · 19/12/2013 21:38

just got back from dinner out.
DH and I were technically fasting so while the kids went for Steak and chips he and I shared a tapas platter (and a small drink)
feel reasonably self righteous

my spare cat seems OK and my own cats are not too nose out of joint

now just to get the kids to sleep for a day or three so they are less horrible

BsshBossh · 19/12/2013 21:41

24 hour LOF completed followed by sub 150 cals (fruit and mug of soup).

NFD tomorrow - have been watching Nigel Slater's doc on biscuits so tomorrow that's what a fancy! Though may have to seek out mini packets of them as a big pack would go to waste (no one in our family eats biscuits). Might have to go to a local bakers for individual ones (may get more than three one).

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 22:39

MrsF Yes, this steel bod can hammer young hunks or smash into someone's chocolate vault.
Xmas Grin

On a serious note, I noticed in Tuesday's boxing how excess weight hinders the physical performance of even very muscular people:

An amateur boxer there is now so fat that he couldn't even attempt the HIIT part of the class, so had to watch us for 15 mins. He looked very sad and embarrassed. I felt so sorry for him.
Sad
Also, the trainer is a retired pro, 10 years younger than I am, but with a very small pot-belly. He is a really impressive boxer who could murder me instantly in any fight, but I beat him regularly in HIIT or Tabata, because the bodyweight exercises tire him more.
Shock

TalkinPeace · 19/12/2013 22:42

Ooh Bigchoc
I had a play on a Bosu in the gym this morning for the first time, but could not work out how to stop it wobbling while standing on one leg - do you keep your foot flat or sloping - do you happen to know?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 22:44

Turkey Are you leching over all the bikini and dress-up pics being posted ?
Or are you too weak from hunger / hungover ?
Hmm

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 22:55

Bigchoc GrinGrin

Turkey. Where are you??

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 23:01

tip I avoid single-leg balancing (except on the floor) because I'm chicken about knee joints and also falling - we don't bounce well in middle age !
However, it is a good bum/thigh exercise for the brave.

You need to keep your centre of gravity stable, which probably means most of the weight on your heel, with the toe more for balance, like a standard single-leg squat. Keep the leg bent and arms wide & flexible, obviously.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 23:09

tip
I recommend expertise with 2 legs before proceeding to single legs.
It's been a long time since i BOSUed, but:
To practice my balance on 2 legs, I used to lean successively to the sides and front/rear. I also did deep squats.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 23:22

Bssh Why not go for cookies rather than bix ? One or two big cookies, takeaway from a bakery or coffee chain, makes a full portion for a non-Frenzier.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 19/12/2013 23:52

Hah! I have literally just caught up! Was out doing food shopping, then got home to a heap of stuff to do. Dd being a little turd tonight too so had the right arse because of her.

I'm telling ya, there is something up with all these kiddies today this week. What really grates me is, it's bloody present fest next week and when they are so flippin ungrateful for everything, it really makes me want to stick spikes and crushed glass on the roof to stop FC landing!

Feel fat and bloated tonight. Didn't eat until late and ended up scoffing down a load of wedges. Now lying in bed, willing them to slide to stomach end rather than mouth end!! Xmas Grin

Stbexp - I, in my innocence, wasn't aware of a negative version. Wasn't 100% sure what to call him (steady!) but thought I'd seen this before when I was lurking on a wtf am I going to do as single parent type of thread.

We're friends. In fact there is a sweet, harmonious air about the house right now. Will discuss this another time. But if I was in a name calling mood.... I could do a lot better than stupid bastard Xmas Grin I can be quite creative with sweary words when inspired the right way!
Just thought it was bit misleading still using dp. After all, you can't tell when I mean dopey prick!

Apparently MrSausage is out on town tonight with the 5:2 Thread Wanker-Husband Massive! But I'm sure he'll be perving again soon.

BigChoc I love it when you regale your tales of torture! Is it wrong that I get a bit excited!? Virtual high fives all round. You're doing it for womankind!

Lol at B&W still got the scars!....

....Do you wanna see our scars B&W? Do ya? Do ya??? (C-sec and badly-stitched-undercarriage segment of thread circle in on B&W.)
Thought not! Now get back in that kitchen - you haven't done the dishes properly!!!!!

Talking of scars! Was about to spout off about the pros of a nice c-section scar, over a tear stitch up by trainee with the shakes and seemingly appalling vision, clutching blunt knitting needle and wire wool thread (might've exaggerated last part)
Then I got to end of my thread catch up and changed my mind!

Natural birth/tearing might have destroyed my v-jj forever more, but at least my life was never at risk. Or had to deal with belly bursting open! Thanks and pats on back all round!

Sounds like this overhang thing is something for both lots though. Bumbags, was the perfectly fitting name used on here last week!

'spect you're all in bed now. See you on the morrow. Night Mary Ellen...

peplum41 · 20/12/2013 02:53

Oh for goodness sake turks you are funny!

It's taken me almost two night shifts to catch up, love it when the thread is full steam ahead. Lots of lovely pics, which btw, tip I do find inspiring rather than demotivating. Will rustle something up soon as a progress picture. Actually, I'm just nosey, and love seeing what all these strangers we chat to look like.

mrsf really appreciated link to much maligned but occasionally rather interesting daily mail article about sugar. Thanks, really struck a chord with me being all insulin sensitive. You seem a lovely mummy.

southeastdweller loved your inspiring tale!! Must confess though, all this time been reading your posts, have occasionally chatted, never realised you're a bloke! Sorry love, I've always imagined you as a rather independent, fancy free young lady spending her time enjoying the excitement of living in the capital, spending fds in museums and cafes, enjoying nfds in esteemed eateries. Will continue to live slightly vicariously through your posts. My fds are rather dull and domesticated, involving mopped floors and piles of ironing. Or sleeping and watching tv.

BsshBossh · 20/12/2013 07:28

Friday weigh-in and whoops Christmas has begun for me obviously: 2 lbs up. No worries, January will roll round soon.

NFD today. BigChoc I fancy good old-fashioned English biscuits a la Nigel Slater: McVities digestive, a bourbon, custard cream...
