Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Turkey

I've been playing with the hunks at the gym and breaking them again
Xmas Grin
I enjoyed hammering them during HIIT (343 reps) after boxing last night: Spiderman did beat me by 3 secs, but he nearly collapsed with heart failure; he was so determined not to be beaten by a small middle-aged female. We both beat all the others by a few minutes.

The evening before, we had to do one-armed press-ups on a medicine ball, where they were also frantic to keep up with me.

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 18:50

Urrrgh. Why is it when you try and do something nice for your kids it always comes back to bite you in the bum!!!

I will not drown my sorrows in the replenished biscuit tin. I will stay strong. Just a few hours until DH home, kids in bed and then I can eat my paella. That'll be 430 cals plus the spirulina and bouillon broth and I'll be safely within 500 for the day.

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 18:53

Earslaps your pic is very impressive. Not sure I would ever be able to pose in a bikini with my saggy skin and stretch marks (unless I work out how to air brush my own photos) but it'll be nice to feel toned and improve my core strength.

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 18:55

Wish I had the energy and umph to bake like MrsF. The most I can handle is shortbread. Just three ingredients, whizz together with some choc chips and bake.

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 18:57

And before I forget. Toffee. Sending lots of (((hugs))) your way.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 18:59

Baking buddies MrsF! I bake all the time.

Just really lost my temper with the kids and swore. That was bad enough but there were f letters involved Sad. DS1 is forever rolling his eyes though he says he isn't. Well, he is certainly looking away in a stroppy manner!

Dinner smells yummy.

DH is poorly.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 19:02

Thank you ChristmasPudding6.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 19:16

So Ive successfully completed a 16:8 today. I feel loads better not thinking about how far over 1500 cals I would have gone. It wont have been much (will be less than 2000), but it was just stressful trying to stay under something that I knew I wouldn't.

ELR · 19/12/2013 19:22

Evening all, haven't caught up on the thread yet but will do so in a moment. After another successful fast yesterday I was 10st 6.25lb this morning so that's a whopping 4.25lb loss from Mondays weigh in. Think I have just nipped that weight gain in the bud!
Must be the week for our DH's to be pains in the arse as DH staggered into bed last night at 1.30am sticking of booze, singing and waffling on about his Christmas night out! So after waking me up, he promptly fell asleep and Then I was awake until around 4pm! I was absolutely starving too.

Just back from London with dd the afternoon tea was fab we really enjoyed it, but feeling a little sick now with all the sugar and carbs.
Anyway off to catch up on everyone's news.

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 19:27

ELR. Well done of whopping loss Grin

Where did you take your DD for afternoon tea?

I'm taking DD and MIL to the Mad Hatters tea party at the Sanderson next week. It's a tradition now that we do this when MIL visits.

TheRaniOfYawn · 19/12/2013 19:53

I have been fasting all day. Her op

TheRaniOfYawn · 19/12/2013 19:54

Sorry. Child posted.

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 19:55

Toffee. (((((Hugs))))). So did I. Mine have been absolute shits today. Not so much DD. she did tidy the play room completely by herself and she did great making pepper nuts.

DS on the other hand. Had about 5 enormous meltdowns ("I'm too sticky" "I want a biscuit NOOOOOW" - you get the drift).

And by bed time no one was listening or doing what they were told. As I have a sore throat and am croaky the volume was limited but still I was so hopping mad.

And now they are asleep and look so sweet, I feel like a monster Sad

So yes Toffee massive sympathy from me Wine

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 20:05

Earslaps.
I don't have CS overhang and my two scars are in the same place as one not that you can see them.

My first CS was an EMCS with shoulder dystocia. DD had already partially descended so had to have her head shoved back up and it was a massive problem to free her. We're both lucky to be here.

Second CS was elcs at Portland. Very calm and skilled.

Other than my huge weight gain both times, I was polyhydranious with DD due to the GD and I had circa 15 litre of amniotic fluid in there on top of a 10lbs baby. The last few weeks my stomach reached beyond my knees when I was seated. Hmm

So I've split my stomach muscles twice and although the function well now, I have a sort of a "hole" around my belly button where my six pack muscles don't come together and never will without surgery.

This means that even though I'm not fat now and a bMi of 21.8, I look pregnant because my stomach sticks out around the belly button.

So that's why bikinis are off the menu.

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 20:08

Bigchoc Shock one armed press ups on a medicine ball!!! Are you made of steel!!??!! Wow. Im a bit scared now. Grin

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 19/12/2013 20:11

Betsy thanks for recipe they sound gorgeous!

MrsF you had a nightmare with your GD! :(

Well, didn't manage fast today - caved in and had normal dinner with DH and a couple of biscuits. Trying to think of it as a mini fast so I don't throw myself headfirst into the biscuit tin!

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 20:12

Southeast. Hmm Not exactly. He puts on a massive show for PILs so they think he is dad of the year. And FIL ends up moaning that "she's not interested in those children"

Well FIL, the only time your son takes time off work is when you come. The only time he plays with the DC is when you come. And FIL when you visit I cook 24/7 because you eat me out of house and home and constantly ask for meals and snacks.
And the rest of the time I'm a single parent with a lodger who thinks this is a hotel.

EarSlaps · 19/12/2013 20:16

I'm not surprised you chose the Portland after your first experience MrsF. Sounds like a very traumatic experience, and awful pregnancies too. You have done so well to get to the point that you can workout like you do, I know you've mentioned the hours and £££ of physio. Given what you have been through, a bikini is the least of your worries. Most lesser humans would have just given up but you have fought all the way to regain your health and fitness (and get back into all that gorgeous designer stuff Smile). Just a shame your twonk of a DH doesn't appreciate you as much as we all do. Flowers.

I know I was extremely lucky with my pregnancies- the worst I had was sciatica. It's just shocking what some women have to go through to produce the next generation. If men had to be pregnant there'd be some sort of cure for all the worst bits of it.

EarSlaps · 19/12/2013 20:18

Sounds like your DH is a chip off the old block then if FIL is like that.

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 20:25

Earslaps. Thanks. Smile

I was going to go Portland first time but when I went to the GP (with DH), we wanted a recommendation for an obstetrician and the GP went sort mental about how Portland kill women and its an awful place!!! So our closest hospital was University College London and the brand new buildings had just opened and the GP said we absolutely had to go there.

So I did. What a mistake that was!! The antenatal care was a shambolic joke and the errors during my labour almost cost me my life and DDs.

So yes always go with your instincts.

DH has said for the money it has cost to put me back together again and still will do once I have surgery on the belly button area, we could have had two CS at the Portland!! Wink

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 20:27

Earslaps. FIL is in his 80s Scottish and was brought up by his grand parents. He is also very cantankerous and profoundly deaf so he gets the wrong end of the stick all the time Grin

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 20:29

Oh and my third fast this week ended at 678 (those pesky pepper nuts!!).
I'm calling it a fast though Wink and I was LOF from 5 PM last night until
4 PM today.

ELR · 19/12/2013 20:55

Wow christmas you look great in the red dress as do you ears in your bikini.
mrsF sounds like you've had a tough time, I too can never wear a bikini as have the worst ever stretch marks. Some are 1.5 cm wide! Our afternoon tea was at Aldwych One in the Lobby Bar
www.onealdwych.com/food-drink/afternoon-tea.aspx
Enjoy your afternoon tea next week.

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 19/12/2013 20:55

Just back from 2 days away with work, my you lot can fill a thread quickly!

I'll only manage 1 FD this week and I have seriously overindulged through being away...

Now I'll try and catch up with what you've all been up to!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 20:59

MrsF - yep, always end up feeling crap. I apologised to DD and DS2 for saying the naughty word and DD said it was DS1 that was naughty, not her. DH told me not to apologise to DS1. What annoys me is I blow my top, DS1 rolls his eyes and it is always DD and DS2 who then help, never DS1. He eventually did come and take his clothes but always under duress and after many hints. I often think about going on strike...

I also had an EMCS for DS1. I had polyhydromnious but not sure what was exactly wrong with DS1. Also had it redone as they didn't sew me up properly in the first place. Unfortunately with DC3 I nearly had a scar rupture and DH nearly lost us both. Advised not to have any more children. DH got the snip!

Bugger. I feel fat and dirty. Really need to sort myself out so must fast tomorrow. I need to lose some more weight but more importantly I need to get my head in the right place again.
