Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Oh wait a minute, there are no nuts in it! Lol Thought it was like a recipe for those lovely brownsugar crystallised nut things you get on the street apologies!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 19/12/2013 15:39

Bloody 'ell MrsF!!!

I am just off out for last perishables shopping soon. Will now be adding white pepper to list!

So far my baking over next 2days is going to be MrsF EarSlaps (not you Earslaps!), and pepper nuts, 2 Yule logs, mincemeat cookies, mince pies, and sticky toffee pud for Xmas day. Am also doing Christmas pud vodka and werthers or mars bar vodkas.

As well as trying to fit in gingerbread house baking/making!

Wouldn't mind but am out on and off from tmw lunchtime and sat, then at Panto on Sunday so not sure how fitting all in!

Not all for me! Am indulging stbexp/dd and taking bits to family visit tmw. Phew!!

That is a weight gain waiting to happen!!

Fd appears to be going ok so far today. Not caved yet.

BetsyJingleBells · 19/12/2013 15:55

Ds1 has just stomped in, ignored my cheery hellos and started grumping.

Funnily enough I was already preparing for his bad mood this afternoon - like not looking to coming home as it's so unpleasant when he's here.

That's horrible isn't it? :(

HE'S ONLY NINE! It's all going to get worse isn't it?

Right will read thread now I've got that off my chest.

Could be worse betsy you could have teenagers!

postmanpatsreindeer · 19/12/2013 16:06

Looking good earslaps and pudding (though the dress one has disappeared earslaps Confused )

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 16:06

Earslaps. Woooow!!!! You look amazing!!

You won't be getting a bikini shot of me!!

Two 10lbs babies and 2 CS = end of mrs florricks bikini career Wink

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 16:12

Turkey. I've just snorted tea out of my nose reading your post to Bigchoc. GrinGrin

Toffee. ((((((Hugs))))) we are all this together!!! Don't be hard on yourself. I'm here. You're free to PM me anytime. Smile

Bigchoc. Yes I see. With a TDEE of 2400, you can obviously put lots away so to speak. Need to get into mega workouts (dragging Nordic gods around by their ankles and swinging them over my head) so I can frenzy more GrinGrinWink

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 16:20

Wow Christmaspud. You're sexy in that red dress. Beautiful!! Your figure is amazing.

That's when I wish I wasn't so old and I could wear something short.

But I can't complain. I do alright for an old bird.

BetsyJingleBells · 19/12/2013 16:21

Yes but PPR, they're going to become teenagers aren't they? Shock!

Looking fabulous pudding, I like a strong thigh on a woman . Red dress is stunning! I wish I would wear nice frocks. I can't seem to get to grips with dressing like a grown up. Probably never will at this point!

I seem to have lost my appetite recently, part of me thinks this is good but I sort of feel like I can't be arsed to eat anything as there's nothing I fancy, and I don't like it. I don't even want booze particularly. WOE IS ME!

I've got an amazing recipe for candied nuts festive - I'll dig it out and post up.

OP posts:
BetsyJingleBells · 19/12/2013 16:23

sugar and spice candied nuts Warning, highly addictive!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 16:32

Thank you EarSlaps.

How lovely Biscuits thank you.

I have definitely lost "me" since I have had the children and got ill. When ever I try and stand up for myself it comes out all wrong and makes me sound like a right stroppy cow so I am not going to do that any more. I don't know what is up with me today other than TOTM as I just feel so worried.

BigChoc - thank you. I do try and give support where I can but not sure if I am any good.

Just had to say no to DD having something as she was rude while out., She just walked off, no fuss or arguing Shock and sent her brother to ask if she is allowed to watch TV with him. Claiming that as a PV (Parenting Victory!).

Thank you Bssh.

Doing kids fish and cous cous for tea and making up a risotto meal for DH and I. I can't function with out a meal plan but haven't food shopped so here we are! Freezer is full of food but a lot of it is defrost first or treats for Christmas - savoury ones - so not a lot of actual stuff. No one ever starves in my house though. We once had an unexpected bill of £500 and I still fed us all with only a few pounds overdrawn and no food shopping so I know I keep too much food in.

BetsyJingleBells · 19/12/2013 16:39

Ooh good toffee you are still here :) You're not allowed to leave y'know. Sorry that you are not feeling right at the moment though, you are going through so much. Do feel free to vent here xxx

OP posts:
BetsyJingleBells · 19/12/2013 16:40

What sort of risotto are you making toffs? Could I do something risottesque with the load of cooked brown rice in the fridge I wonder? I hate waste and not wanting to eat really doesn't help the situation!

OP posts:
ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 16:45

Smile thank you Betsy what a lovely post.

I am half making it up, half following a recipe from Delia as I don't have some of what she says to use so I am improvising. I wanted an oven baked risotto.

It will have onions, mushrooms, peas, sweet corn, prawns, rice and cheese. Might be amazing but I am not hopeful.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 16:46

If anyone can suggest anything else to go in, please do. I haven't made a risotto very often.

BetsyJingleBells · 19/12/2013 16:58

Toffee Sounds good to me! I think I'm going to use up my brown rice by doing fried rice with bacon, leeks, fennel, spinach and lashings of some very strong pecorino.

Ooh yes, that's making me feel hungry now, good news!

OP posts:
EarSlaps · 19/12/2013 17:08

Can I join in with your new workouts MrsF, they sound awesome! I was luckier with my babies- one 6lb and one 6lb4 so tummy fairly intact after. Plus I had no GD, and a small appetite in pregnancy, so I only gained around 2st each time. I did have a CS, but my surgeon was really neat so I've been blessed with no overhang.

Breastfeeding was what made me gain- I ate so much junk as I was so hungry all the time. I just excused it as normal and thought it was inevitable to be heavier after having children.

Toffee- I like risotto with asparagus, peas, leeks, chicken and pesto-yum.

Betsy- I thought the same as you about 'stbx'!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 19/12/2013 17:13

betsy stbx is nearly always stupid bastard ex though Wink. Its always how I read it too

earslaps Envy I wish my surgeon hadn't left me with an overhang. Whilst it's now considerably less after 5:2 and hooping it's still there. Taunting me. Not enough though coz I'm too lazy to do any real ab work...

Southeastdweller · 19/12/2013 17:17

Congrats Betsy and head on your new all-time (adult?) lows Smile

MrsF Do you think you'll get some time to yourself next week when H finally pulls his finger out and your PIL's arrive?

Southeastdweller · 19/12/2013 17:27

postmanpats Thanks so much. My waist has gone down to 30" or 32" depending on what shop I go to, down from 34" or 36". I'm still settling into the new share that I moved into last weekend but feeling happier as it's a better part of London and now I wake up to the faint sound of traffic and not neighbours screaming at each other and their dogs barking Grin.

By the way, is that DP of yours ever going to take you for that meal at The Gate?! I'm still waiting for a review!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 17:30

Betsy - yours sounds lovely. Years ago I used to have chicken, rice, sweet corn and brown sauce a lot. Really yummy Grin.

EarSlaps · 19/12/2013 17:33

Eatriskier- my surgeon was female and renowned for very neat scars. Plus it was elective, and I think everything is less rushed and neater then. When the midwife inspected it at two weeks she exclaimed- "oh yes, you can tell Judith did that one, it's a work of art". Grin

Southeast- that's an amazing loss on the clothes sizes. Glad the new pad is ok.
