The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done Betsy! Great plateau smashing. I predict a few plateaus on this thread around the Christmas period then some mega plateau smashing in the new year!

Christmaspud- you look fantastic. Not a hint of puddingyness (that's a word right?).

Frenzies- sometimes I feel like I've had a frenzy, but then I look back and it probably would have just been a normal day before! Yesterday I stuffed back a couple of mini kinder bars, a couple of squares of dark chocolate, some white choc buttons, 3 mini mince pies and a ton of icing (we made a gingerbread house). But then I had a smaller dinner and lunch to compensate and then decided to fit in a last decent fast before Christmas today.

So FD here and I'm just about to finish off Six Week Six Pack!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 19/12/2013 12:34

Wow! ChristmasPud you look totes stuffingballs in that red dress!

Might be danger of exploding sausage syndrome with a certain you know who if he clocks that!

Get out and been seen in public immediately - you look gorgeous!

TalkinPeace · 19/12/2013 12:35

Christmaspudding
Another one with a waist ! - love that red dress. Well done.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 12:54

Would it be bad for me not to count calories for these next two weeks and just stick to 3 meals over 16:8 most days? I might be able to fit in a mini fast or two. If I eat consciously, slowly and really taste my food. Stop when Im full and not eat too much (ie stop before I get full) and listen to my inner voice that I never believe when it says stop now you've had enough. If I do those can I stop counting calories for a bit? Its too distressing working out my dinner will be 1000 calories at best so that only leaves 500 for the rest of the day. That's what Im finding hardest ATM.

In 2 weeks I start my new job and will get right into the 5:2 then straight away. It will be easier for 2 reasons: 1. I will be at work so can easily eat less and 2. My book will have arrived by then so not only will I have read that properly, but DH will also be able to know exactly what Im doing.

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 13:06

Biscuits going by most experiences people are finding that their calorie consumption falls quite dramatically when they stop snacking so I would have thought sticking to just three meals will be better than nothing. Don't forget any pounds gained in the next week will melt away once you start fasting again. U did well before so you know u CAN do it. Just need to be in the right mindset.
I took the whole summer off. Gained 7lb but they have all gone again. Woo hoo.

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 13:12

Waist - check
Hips - check
Bum - check
Got the hat trick.

Like Betsy I envy those slim hips and thighs you apple shapes own.

I feel like a bit of an imposter in that I wasn't actually overweight before I began. I was just a few pounds from an overweight BMI and a heavy yo yo dieter. I have been 10st 4 lb several times over the last few years but I've also been 11st 7 several times too. It must be taking a toll on my body.

Not sure what weight I was in the first pictures but that is 3st lighter than when I was pregnant with number three. In the before photos DD is nearly three and I still look pregnant so I needed to take action. Not sure exactly which weight I was this time last year but it was clearly more than I am now.

When I reach goal BMI 21 approx 9 st 13 I will take a new picture in the khaki clingy trop to compare.

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 13:14

And I start 6W6P in the new year when I've recovered from a busy December.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 19/12/2013 13:15

Bloody hell, do you lot have any idea how much you talk?! :o Can't possibly catch up now but I am going for a fast day, aided by the fact I stayed in bed until lunchtime Blush because of poor sleep and snotty cold last night.

Just checked the scales and my weight is virtually unchanged. I know it's because I am pigging out on NFD's. Trying to draw some comfort from the fact that I haven't actually put any on, in spite of too many meals out and too many treats.

Not even thinking about calories over the weekend, too many social things on. Plan is then to do a mini-fast from Sun evening till Mon evening (500 cals), then have a small dinner Mon night. Then Christmas officially starts!

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 13:15

And thanks for lovely comments Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 13:17

I am sorry everyone, especially you Turkey. I am not myself at the moment and I don't know why. I could say due to action against the man who assaulted me as a child but I don't want to use that as an excuse if I am just being an arse.

MrsF - thanks for saying all you did. I feel very strongly I would want you as friend in real life and don't like to see you being treated so badly.

Thanks postmanpatsreindeer.

My TOTM is definitely been different the last few months and I don't know where I am. I was not expecting it.

Just ironed for 2 hours. My back is aching. Just had lunch and shortly will be taking ToffeeGirl and ToffeeBoy to the library, the co-op and the post office. DH will be later home tonight so I might just buy him a pizza to cook.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 13:19

I just reread it all, especially your long post Turkey and got all teary at you still being nice to me after I was a prickly cow. I am not used to second chances in RL. Seems I have more friends on MN then RL and strangers understand me better than real life people.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 19/12/2013 13:31

Toffee haven't read back yet but sympathy on the TOTM thing. I used to be fine but post DC my PMT seems to start 5-7 days in advance, rather than the 1-2 days beforehand it used to :( There's nothing quite like that hormone induced psychotic rage...!

EarSlaps · 19/12/2013 13:36

Xmaspud- you will love 6w6p- it is hard but so worth it. I have now finished it- yippeeeeeeee.

Don't tell that naughty sausage, but I just may do a bikini shot if I get a chance now.

Biscuits- eating mindfully and avoiding snacks sounds like a great plan. To be honest, most of us could probably have lost weight and reached targets just doing that, albeit more slowly. 5:2 fasting just helps us with it and makes us listen to our bodies and realise that a little bit of a tummy rumble won't kill us and doesn't need to lead us to the biscuit jar.

EarSlaps · 19/12/2013 13:37

Toffee- you have lots of friends here, and friends roll with the punches Flowers.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 13:42

Thanks Christmas and Ear I will do that for the next two weeks then. Most days will be 16:8 with eating no more than 3 times. Might only be twice. Some days (like 25th) will be a bit more flexible though.

Toffee Flowers I dont have any RL friends. I'll be your friend.

EarSlaps · 19/12/2013 13:55

Right, for a limited time only there is a picture of me in a bikini on my profile Smile.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 13:57

Well done to the plateau-smashers Betsy and Not2Be !
Flowers
Wow, ChristmasPud That dress fits you beautifully and such a lovely colour. Your DH / DP will have his eyes rotating on stalks when he sees you in that outfit !

Toffee
You are among friends here. We won‘t get offended. This thread is for support and you have obviously suffered a lot and have some problems still.
Don‘t worry, some days we‘ll also sound off or want to share problems and then you give sympathy, so it all evens out.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 13:58

Turkey
The last days before the hols are always a frantic rush at work ….
but that is no excuse not to boot your avian arse in passing.
Xmas Grin
I‘ll make up for it over the next 2 weeks. I‘ll kick your lazy butt into shape with pressups and abs galore.
^^

TheRaniOfYawn · 19/12/2013 14:15

ChristmasPud, you look fantastic in that dress. Your photos make great inspiration as you appear to have a considerably thinner version of my body. Your before photos are pretty much what I look like with a BMI of around 24.

Also, EarSlaps. Wow. That is all.

BsshBossh · 19/12/2013 14:25

EarSlaps and Biscuits you both look lovely.
Biscuits your conscious eating plan sounds perfect (it's how we should be eating) and you're still getting health benefits from aily 16 hour fasts.
Toffee you're going through a lot, it's normal to be a "prickly cow" (not that you come across like that; it's all in your head woman!).

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 15:04

Bigchoc Can you kick my lazy butt into gear too with press ups and abs. I need to tone myself up too. I run 3 times a week on a good week but need some toning too.

Thanks Bssh

EarsSlaps you look lovely.

Im going to take my measurments are later, what do I need? Where exactly should I measure? I have a tape measure so the tools are ready.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 19/12/2013 15:06

Frenzies

Although my Choc Frenzies may sound shocking, they have been considerably reduced by 5.2

Long-winded version below ^^

I started them when I was about 8 years old, to celebrate end of school week with a ¼-lb bar of choc.
They expanded in adulthood,
They worsened 2 years ago, after I stopped years of low-carbing (which I hated but stuck with) – so a reaction to that long deprivation, I think.
Since I didn't exceed BMI 24.9 and my training built a high % muscle, my fat% was never very high; so I wasn't motivated to question Frenzies until 5:2.

With 5:2, I have :

  • Stopped snacking and day-long grazing. I (mostly) eat mindfully - just in large amounts !
  • Reduced number of Frenzies / very-high-cal days to 1 per week
  • Massively reduced the really bad sweet junk in my Frenzies: I used to scoff say 8 choc donuts, then have a pack of choc digestive and some cheesecake, so 5,000 cals junk. Now my Frenzy / high-cal days contain healthy protein, veg, fats plus 1,500 cal limit for sweet junk.
  • Drastically reduced sweet junk between Frenzies.
  • Increased the amount of veg and fruit on NFDs
  • Before 5:2 my weight kept slowly increasing through my 50s until it reached 24.9. So, stopped that, BMI is 22.7 and (v. slowly) reducing further.
  • Lost fat in tum, bum, thighs, calves - body shape improved. Still want to improve tum a bit.

Plans:

  • Keep one high-cal day per week of say 3000, to maintain high TDEE – which is 2400, due to muscles & training.
  • Last December-Feb I put on a stone, so I doing ADF December to mid January, to handle the frequent eating out and achieve SWATH.
MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 15:08

The recipe will give you between 120 and 150 pepper nuts.

I've plugged it into MFP and its 12 cals per peppernut.

Sounds virtuous but isn't. These are highly addictive. Crack and methamphetamine are take it or leave in comparison!

You can't have just 1 or 10. So you've been warned.

But they are Scandinavia at Christmas time in a mouthful.

Another of my grandmothers classics. GrinGrin

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 19/12/2013 15:11

Toffee all that bothered me (soothing voice here) was that you might've been upset by something I'd said.

I feel for you, I really do (kiss on forehead)

I am up/down/all over place so I was just wondering if we were sharing same cause. Glad the last msg came through in right tone though, and that didn't make you feel worse. Was getting paranoid about foot in mouth disease - not that I ever suffer from that!
Xmas Hmm

....and guess what....

I'M BILLY NO MATES TOO!! all you confessors - can I join the gang???

Like to think its because I'm a recluse with lots of Bssh's lone time favouring too, rather than because there is actually anything wrong with me!
Xmas Hmm

Could be wrong though! I wonder how many people are screaming 'it's because you're an annoying loser (and not the 5:2 kind!)'

But am firm believer in quality over quantity so I don't lose any sleep over it.

However on here it's the more the merrier as there's loads of you gorgeous people on this thread!

MrsFlorrick · 19/12/2013 15:16

Arse. Recipe didn't go on first time.

Peppernuts

175g sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoon cream
250g plain flour
1/8 teaspoon of Cream of Tartar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
100g butter

The Nuts

Whist sugar and eggs until white add cream and mix

In other bowl mix spices and flour and cream of tartar
Add butter and rub in until crumbly
Add sugar egg cream mix
Mix until you have a very sticky dough
Cover with clingy and refrigerate for at least 1 hr.
roll into long sausages circa 1.5cm diameter
Cut into 1.5cm sections
Place on baking tray
Bake on 180c fan or 200c conventional for circa 9mins

Do not let them go brown at all! And they will still be soft until they cool.

Let the frenzy begin!!Grin
