Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MrsF I think you're lovely xx Thanks

Biscuits taking into consideration everything you have said, another suggestion I can make for you if all else fails/or is harder to achieve, is to start saying you want more veg/salad with meals because that is what you fancy. Then you can load your plate with plenty and have a small portion of whatever he makes, which should remove any reasons he has to object. He can't physically force you to eat more after all. If he bangs on about why, just curl your lip up and say you've gone off massive/fatty portions. We do all change our tastes. Nothing new or illegal about that.

As far as fatty meat products go (boak), there is no excuse to buy the crap stuff. You're essentially just paying for fat which will mostly melt down (in mince especially) and disappear, so it is a false economy to buy that over leaner.

I'm a tight arse when shopping so I will always spend the least I can get away with on certain food items, but I won't compromise on quality either. I check the labels on everything. Buying marginally more expensive mince to get the lean stuff, would actually taste nicer, fill you up longer as it is protein not fat, and you will get more for your money instead of it melting to fat. If nothing else you might be able to appeal to the cook in him.

Maybe another tactic to try alongside everything is to buy him some cookbooks for Christmas. If he won't listen to you maybe he will take note of a celebrity chef and get an education into the bargain! He can learn about cheap cuts of meat (for the budget issues), whilst learning about importance of quality, nutrition etc.

More than one way to skin a cat and all that!

We often eat separately to dd. And I have always checked with stbexp if he's happy with dinner choice. On those occasions we fancy different things, I'm happy to make it but quite often we'll both do our own whilst catching up on day. He can't cook either, so doesn't, but we don't make any issues about wanting separate things. On fd it's the same.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 19/12/2013 00:04

Cross posted with you then biscuits, but pleased to say its still, if not more, relevant!!

BigChoc are you ignoring me???? You haven't insulted me for days now! (Bottom lip pouty face)

Fd FAIL I mean unsuccessful again here. Am just clutching at water mainlining and mindful eating as only things I'm managing to achieve this week. Tmw another day though! (Eye roll)

headintheclouds · 19/12/2013 00:08

bssh I'm fasting tomorrow -I intend doing a 6:1 next week and the week after. I'm encouraged though as another lb down last weigh in.
I'm now 9st 9 ! Can't honestly remember the last time I was that light!
another 4 lbs off and I'll be at my wedding day weight 14 yrs ago.In no hurry though as I'm now very comfortable in my skin....

rubbishfamily333 · 19/12/2013 00:20

Biscuits - you should be Able to choose what you want to eat without feeling bad. Also you could easily have meals with the family but have something different to them.

In my house its just me and dd and we eat Different meals to each other very night which can be annoying for me to cook.

I make a batch of something for fast days and stick it in the freezer so I dont have I cook on fast days, maybe you could try that?

TheRaniOfYawn · 19/12/2013 07:04

That's lovely, headintheclouds.

BetsyJingleBells · 19/12/2013 07:46

Hey me too hitc! Just, finally smashed through my 4 month plateau of bouncing between 9.12 and 10stone - now a personal low scale reading of 9stone10! Grin

Impromptu fast day for the win!

I walked several miles yesterday too so that's strengthened my resolve to get out and about instead of being sedentary over Christmas.

Not2bObvious · 19/12/2013 08:05

Oops so sorry Toffee & Biscuits, with so much chat I got confused with whose husband was being derided (I'm sure that's a real word even if it sounds dodgy) I thought I'd strayed on Aibu by mistake Xmas Grin
Yesterday was day 1 of maintaining, but looks like I'm maintaining a gain! I could kill my dh - feel free to lambast the b*stard Grin - but after my sterling work of finishing the chocs, he came home with ANOTHER tub. For the "visitors"
There are no visitors, there's me who ate 14 in a row. 14.
I am a danger to myself and any chocolate in a 20 foot vicinity. Ah wellConfused

Not2bObvious · 19/12/2013 08:07

Well done hitc!!! Delighted for you

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 19/12/2013 08:08

Not2Be I feel your pain!

headintheclouds · 19/12/2013 08:24

Hey Betsy that's brilliant- well done !! Good luck all tasters today.. I'm in work and having to avoid all the tables groaning with cake & Chocs etc that everyone brings into the office this time of year !

postmanpatsreindeer · 19/12/2013 08:24

Well done hitc and betsy on your new lows - great timing!

southeast there's a significant attitude shift evident in your inspiration post, that's a great achievement. You must have noticed a big difference in your waist size too. How's the housing situation these days? Will you be all settled in your new pad for Christmas?

not2b repeat after me: I am not a visitor. I live here. These are not my chocolates. I will not eat them. feel free to add my DH is a pain in the neck for bringing them home

Good luck today turkey and today's fasters. I'm not joining you yet, weight is steady despite a ton of Quality Street and mini stollen bites so I'll do a FD when I feel the need. Xmas Blush

headintheclouds · 19/12/2013 08:24

Freudian slip... Fasters Not tasters! Bloody iPhone

ChristmasPudding6 · 19/12/2013 08:25

Not had time to catch up on thread this morning and will need to get kids to school shortly. Have spent the last half hour cropping and uploading a selection of photos.

Party dress not worn in public yet - is that dress too young for me? Mutton dressed at lamb?
Had to do a jeans photo too so I could compare to waist-less pre 5:2 pics. Nearly didn't upload the first 2 pics as they are hideous!!!!

postmanpatsreindeer · 19/12/2013 08:27

ELR looking great in the barely-there dress! Thanks

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 08:43

MrsF - I apologise if you thought I was harsh. I get so annoyed when clearly lovely women are treated so badly by pathetic men.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 08:46

Not2beObvious - I was talking to MrsF actually.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 08:57

Me, BigChoc. If I have breakfast it sets off the munchies and I am done for.

Today is a normal eating day and I am going to try and calorie count to see where I am at.

BTW I posted the above before reading the later posts.

I feel low today. Have said if I want chocolate I can have it but weirdly that is enough and I don't fancy it now.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 19/12/2013 09:05

Lol at "harsh" Toffee!! Xmas Grin

Is it by any chance totm aporoaching???... Hmm

I'm supposedly 9 days away here, but by 'eck the beast is out! Chocolate munching and fire breathing going on here Xmas Sad

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 09:20

I wasn't harsh. I just don't like it when pathetic twats treat their partners appallingly. Bit patronising to blame my feelings on TOTM.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 19/12/2013 09:21

Blush or did you mean my blueness?

I best leave. Seems I am offending everyone.

BsshBossh · 19/12/2013 09:22

headintheclouds and Betsy well done on SVs!

A question for those of you who are overeating/frenzying on NFDs. Is it binging (uncontrolled) or is it controlled/planned overeating? Are you eating until you feel a bit ill? Or is this all just a Christmas thing? Or do you think it's overeating but really when you think about it it's not actually?

One of the criticisms of 5:2 is that in some cases people end up eating too much on NFDs. This concerns me because it's not helping us learn about eating to hunger and satisfaction ie normal healthy eating habits. Also, I thought 5:2 was meant to help with appetite control on all days.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 19/12/2013 09:59

Aunt Flo may be making a christmas visit. I hate that bitch… As a result I lost all my fullness indicators. I actually ate a massive lunch. When I realised it wasn't going to satisfy me then I realised nothing would. Employed my powers of fasting and went through from lunch to dinner with no problem. Dinner was also massive and still I didn't feel full so I ignored it again. Like bssh is saying - Embrace the power of 5:2!

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/12/2013 10:09

Toffee I dont think you have offended anyone have you? After Not2B got confused last night you explained. Please dont leave. I thought you were talking to me too at first and I certainly wasn't offended.

Bssh for me with overeating its a bit of both. I know I should't have it and its certainly not planned so I supposed it can be binging, but Im not sure if 1 biscuit/cake or whatever classes as a binge does it? It might do though. Although eating too much at meal times because I haven't told DH Im doing this so my plan to just eat half of my plate doesn't actually happen. I would say yes I am binging here.

Though I am definately better than before at not eating when not hungry (like last night) and only eating 1 or 2 biscuits instead of a whole packet. Now I just need to work on chocolate oranges or should I just eat the one Ive got and not buy any more until my stones are in single figures where I will buy one as a treat.

Not2bObvious · 19/12/2013 10:11

Toffee I thought you were talking about Biscuits hubby (over enthusiastic mince cooker) not MrsF's (which btw did I miss a post with the actual drunken ramblings? All confused as it was mentioned but couldn't find it)
So I hope that explains my post, very sorry you must have been right confused.
Am not a visitor, right, got it Grin
