Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Moseley
every time

BsshBossh · 18/12/2013 20:24

Mosley is the original and best imo.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 18/12/2013 20:29

Thanks. Mosley it is then. Im ordering it now.

Right done. It is estimated to be here between 27th and 31st December, but with it being Christmas we shall see.

When it comes in the post it will be the ice breaker I will need to bring this up with DH, also if I leave it around he might even just pick it up and take on board some things.

Sorry Ive taken over tonight. Now Im hungry, but I think its more to do with me being all stressed over DH's reaction to this.

BsshBossh · 18/12/2013 20:40

Just remember Biscuits you can't control DH's choices in life but you can control your own. Married or not, the bottom line is we're ultimately only responsible for ourselves.

MrsFlorrick · 18/12/2013 20:40

Rani. You're my cheese twin Grin

My frenzy day was topped up with an entire (oh yes) appenzeller cheese. 200g so that's 800 cals. No biscuits no bread with it. Just ate cheese.
So frenzy day ends on an astounding 2600 cals. Blush Def a FD tomorrow!!!!

Turns out DDs vomit this am wasn't random. There has been more. DS has been sharting for Britain. And I've just started sharting although that could be innards rebelling against junk food day.

DH is moaning because I'm in bed nursing my cold (and sore innards Blush) and he wants company downstairs. After last night he can swivel. He still doesn't understand what the problem is. If he isn't careful I will shart all over him. Sorry TMI!

So Rani my cheese twin what kind did you frenzy on??

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 18/12/2013 20:44

Exactly Bssh

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 18/12/2013 21:05

Angry Your H really is a pathetic. Are you sure you actually married a grown up? Hmm

BetsyJingleBells · 18/12/2013 21:25

biscuits Your tastes are allowed to change - mine certainly have. I rarely enjoy pasta these days… I prefer my bol on a big heap of spinach or salad, maybe with the odd bit of pasta in it. Take control.

I've had an inadvertent fast day: lunch only, then busy straight after work and now it's late! Very happy with that.

OP posts:
Not2bObvious · 18/12/2013 21:26

Ah now Toffee that's a little harsh, I'm sure Biscuit will find a way to address her situation, plenty of good suggestions here. Lots of people fear change, I'm sure it'll all fall into place.

TalkinPeace · 18/12/2013 21:31

Biscuits DH is a twonk who needs to get his arse in gear
MrsFlorricks DH is the pathetic non grown up Xmas Grin

BetsyJingleBells · 18/12/2013 21:40

Can you get him to watch the Horizon doc biscuits? It's pretty convincing… (link in op still works hopefully)

OP posts:
MrsFlorrick · 18/12/2013 21:52

Not sure Toffee + TIP. Hmm

At least he will be the perfect over enthusiastic dad who does everything next week while PILs are here. So that his parents don't see what an arse he is. Angry

It's amazing that he doesn't get it.

Fingers crossed DC and I feel better tomorrow. I was hoping to do some Xmas baking with them. Both love being in the kitchen - making and baking they call it Smile so sweet.

I'm gutted about DCs carol singing. DD has practised for almost 8 weeks. Sad That said it was the right call as you can't be infecting folk deliberately with D&V this close to Xmas. Besides dD slept for 3 hours at lunch time because she was so unwell. She hasn't had an afternoon nap in 2.5 years. DS isn't vomiting but alls not well. He keeps say: " oh my bum mummy". Poor boy.

Anyone seen Bigchoc. I hope she hasn't OD on kale chips!!

BsshBossh · 18/12/2013 22:03

Oh your poor DCs MrsF Sad. I tell you what though, they are so lucky to have such a fab, loving mum to look after them.

BsshBossh · 18/12/2013 22:03

Right, off to bed. FD tomorrow. Who else is fasting Thursday?

TalkinPeace · 18/12/2013 22:10

me and DH

MrsFlorrick · 18/12/2013 22:18

Yep. I'm most certainly fasting tomorrow!! LOF until dinner and then small dinner and LOF until Friday evening for my Friday night blowout. Grin

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 18/12/2013 22:19

Me too - LOF until dinner too.

hopefulgum · 18/12/2013 22:33

biscuits, I can understand what it is like to have a less than supportive husband.
Mine has put on too much weight over the years and has always blamed being married and having kids (he didn't have time to exerciseHmm but has always manages time to watch sport on telly, drink too much beer and eat far too much food...).

When he cooked, he preferred to cook spag bol, using fatty mince.

Last year I went on a diet where I ate "clean" for 30 days. I gave up alcohol, dairy, sugar and grain. It was pretty extreme, but I lost about 10 kilos and felt amazing( and have managed to keep most of it off).

My Dh and I work in the same place, and he kept hearing from our work colleagues how amazing I looked, how much weight I lost, etc which actually spurred him on to doing the same diet I did. He also lost weight, but has managed to put it all back on.He is very sedentry which doesn't help.

I think if you stick to the 5:2 and see results, your DH might see how worthwhile it is. And I don't just mean being slimmer, I mean having lots of energy and being healthier.

My Dsis's partner has become obese and she sent him off to the doctors for a checkup as she was worried about his health, and it was a very good wake-up call for him. Until then he didn't care that he was fat, but his doctor pointed out that in fact, at age 40, when you are that overweight you are at risk of heart disease, diabetes and a string of other ailments. He is now dieting. Maybe that might help your DH see sense?

My DH is now onside doing 5:2 and on FD's we cook something for our kids then have a lower calorie version for ourselves. We'll have vegies and fish while they have vegies and sausages or chicken or pasta. I often give the kids an easy pasta dish on FD's as I do most of the cooking. Last night was a FD and DH cooked a big pile of green beans, squash and asparagus with lean steak, and the kids had the same meal, sans the asparagus and had mashed potato with it.

I completed another FD yesterday. That's my two for the week done! Doing consecutive days was ok, but I wouldn't say it was easy. Around 3 o'clock (despite having a plate of vegies for lunch) I felt quite awful, but perked up with a miso soup. I actually felt quite "windy" and had stomach cramps. Not sure if it is related to AF (due on today or tomorrow) or because my tummy was full of air instead of food??

Anyway I went to bed feeling virtuous and really looking forward to breakfast, which I have just eaten and enjoyed immensely: greek yoghurt, strawberries and toasted coconut, then two pieces of pumpkin toast with butter and honey. Mmmmm......I love this WOL! Xmas Grin

Southeastdweller · 18/12/2013 22:35

Biscuits Why don't you do some of the cooking now and then? As well as small portions I would do as Betsy does and have less carbs sometimes. It's practical for you and your family when eating and a good way to save money.

I hope that when the book comes you'll be able to have a good long talk about your weight loss aims. In any case, come January 2nd there'll be plenty of support on here for you.

ChristmasPudding6 · 18/12/2013 22:38

Don't get much time to keep up with u all during the week but I will be on FD tomorrow. Monday's 36 hour fast went well. I only had 2 mugs of spirulina broth (66 cals) to keep my energy up in the evening). Having a frenzie on carbs of all sorts today. Tomorrow I will atone.

Angry to arsy husbands and whoop whoop to Bennet on 2 stone target.

Sorry I can't remember everyone else I wanted to say well done to as I do all my surfing on my phone so its not easy to glance back, but I enjoyed reading all your posts at the time and love hearing all the NSVs and SVs. Missing BigChoc's banter with Turkey.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 18/12/2013 22:56

^

No, I didn't pverdose on MrsF kale chips. I had late boxing tonight, then had to sort out my kit and do my final Xmas cards.

BennetGirl Great result !
Flowers

Nice NSV with the leggings, Rubbish

Biscuits
Neither of you should force the other to eat / not eat.
Maybe you could agree to cook things so that they are easier to split, e.g. 3 separate serving bowls:

  1. sauces
  2. protein & veg
  3. starches (pasta / potato / rice / bread
BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 18/12/2013 23:15

Over-indulgent NFD came to 3500 cals.
Blush

After my tough FD yesterday, I woke up starving at 5:30, just couldn't sleep, so had breakfast, which I normally skip....
1400 cals later ......
(Buttternut squash soup with handfuls of extra veg, 4 slices sprouted bread, melted cheese & chorizo, 2 tubs rice pud)

Lunch was healthy vegetarian pasta with lots pf veg and fruit but then ....

I was attacked by 2 huge choc cookies and 2 slices choc cake, another 1400 cals.

This always happens if I breakfast:

  • Breakfast is a calorie bomb
  • Lunch is small, but followed by an afternoon choc frenzy

Note to self:
Skip breakfast. If starving, have a protein shake.

Anyone else find that breakfast really sabotages an NFD ?

TheRaniOfYawn · 18/12/2013 23:17

MrsF, my cheese frenzy today was all about Wensleydale.

The kitchen is now closed ready for tomorrow's fast. I hope I do ok, as I will be baking biscuits to decorate the tree and also making sausage rolls, stuffing and bread sauce to freeze.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 18/12/2013 23:17

Good idea Big Choc about the split. Im going to just start dishing my own food up first rather than let DH dish up all the food.

hopeful Im hoping that DH will see results with me and decide he wants to lose weight, but he really doesn't want to. Id like to get him to go to the doctors for a check up, but he wont. My DH doesn't like exercise and he likes to eat. He has always been one for eating a multipack of crisps rather than one pack. In my earlier single days I never even considered eating more than one pack at a time, now even though Ive seriously cut down someone eating 2 or 3 packs of crisps at once done make me go Shock like it used to.

southeast Me Cook? hahaha Seriously I get what you mean, if I serve up my own food I will choose what goes on my plate and have less carbs.

I know I can leave some, but once its on your plate its harder to stop eating. I have now gone through the pinching the kids left overs though so from now on if its not on my plate it doesn't get eaten by me. I can do that.

Grin at Not2b mixing the DH's up. Though my DH can be a child at time (like refusing to consider his weight is serious - he almost has a lalala fingers in ears attitude to it, or a invincible attitude to it)

Hope your DH doesn't give you too much hassle MrsF

Right Night all. Even though I was moaning about fatty evening meals I still managed a 16:8 and had 1800 cals today (ok so over my 1500, but still not too bad - could be worse)

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 18/12/2013 23:19

MrsF
Melted cheese. Oh, isn't it the yummiest thing (after choc - well, usually I eat it before choc)
