Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MFD check in here. Going well. I keep thinking you're all nuts with this LOF stuff but then I suppose I do that for 24hrs anyway so not so nuts maybe Xmas Grin. I am about to lose a load of pre-christmas weight - off to get my hair cut (first party tomorrow). Haven't had it done since my wedding day so I have a few inches to have lopped off and I have sooooooo much hair. Reckon I may lose a good 3lbs (ok, not really but I'm getting my eyebrows done too so that may help as well Xmas Wink)

Sweetie- I waited until 11 months before I started trying to lose weight! I agree that six weeks is too soon. Please just focus on healthy eating (and not mainlining cake) to let your body recover a bit first. You could start some gentle exercise too if your doctor okays it, just brisk walks to start with.

Betsy- we are very different shapes! I am 28in waist and just over 29in under bust, so very straight up and down. Hips are just under 36in, and waist and hips have shrunk about the same amount since I started this- just over 3in off both measurements and roughly the same off my boobs. I can't imagine having such a tiny waist, I'd imagine it can be tough for shopping. Whilst I find they dig in if trousers fit elsewhere you must have a huge gap round the waist.

Welcome papaya, bet you feel like you know us all already, yet you still wanted to join in!

Oh, and not sure if any of you can help out with terrible toddler sleep/potential night terrors here. Feeling pretty dead on my feet and emotionally drained with all the tantrums and screaming rage. It's a bloody miracle I manage not to just stuff my face with junk all day I'm so tired. It's only because I'm too bloody stubborn to put the weight on again (and I know the exercise gives me more energy).

Eatriskier - weight before and after your hair cut! Grin

I am 17.5 hours into my 36 hour fast and it is going okay. Dinner with nothing to eat while DH is eating will be a test but we shall see how we go.

Just about to do a food order, why do we do this to ourselves when we are fasting?!!?

I am so cold. Every time I have to wash my hands I am keeping them in the hot water as long as I can and then putting loads of hand cream on as they are drying out and should give a layer of protection.

FD over here. Reckon I came in at about 6-700 was even better 5min ago before I snaffled a mini waffle. We have gotten ready for St Nicholas's visit here (patron saint of children a bit like Father Christmas) and left him out a treat. Well someone had to eat it! Oops.

Good luck everyone with rest of the FD.

Ears laps can't help you but feel your pain. I have a terrible sleeper and have felt at times weeks would go by without decent sleep. And that was without the trauma I night terrors.

I might have to get the tape measure out but Betsy your waist is tiny!

Night all, look forward to catching up in the morning

Just had stressful work news that hoped for job regarding (more pay) hasn't happened. As I've been doing temporary extra hours that means when I go back to normal hours in Jan I'll, in effect, have a cut in pay.
Am sooooooo f**d off!
Now I really want to eat Angry

I know I know I'm expecting a lot if myself but it helps me feel better about myself and will ward off pnd if I'm losing. When something awful or wonderful is happening in my life I immediately thunk of my weight and that defines how I handle the situation. Someone close to me died once and my first thought was thank God I'm slim at the moment it means I can cope with this. When something really good happens it is tainted if Ifeel overweight. I cannot hit January feeling outing control with eating and feeling like I've not done my best to get fit and healthy.

Same time as me, Toffee, I'm doing fine too.

When the family are eating, keep busy by going for a lovely bath?

dotty commiserations. I could say don't let it spoil the FD but it's not that easy.

My dp has got all stressed out and wants me to do paperwork this eve. So there goes my stress free float into bed.

My bust is 32 round the ribs

My waist is just a smudge under 30 inches in the morning, sucking it in, pulling the tape measure firmly (but not tight). It's how I've always done it. Down from 34 inches.

Hips a wierd 37 inches.

I am too heavy.

Xxx

Oh hugs ((( dotty ))) Sad Well done for not foraging as a result though - I'd call that a NSV!

I like the measurement comparisons - quite interesting how varied we all are! Sort of pointless how standardised clothes measurements are isn't it? They can't really fit anyone properly. Earslaps yes, trousers are a nightmare really - I've found only Sainsbury's trousers do the job as long as they got a bit of stretch in them for my thighs, and then I need a belt as well to avoid the gape! Snug jumper dresses and leggings always work though Xmas Grin

Am hungry today. Will start mainlining hot drinks now I'm home and can go to the toilet whenever I want (yeah, I know how to live Xmas Hmm )

Hello all!

I'd like to introduce myself and say hi, have been reading MN for years but never really posted before (don't have children yet)

The 5:2 WOE is something that really interests me because it's not faddy and not too restrictive overall. I react badly to failure so when I've tried to lose a few lbs before I have binged badly when I 'fail' at the diet.

Height 5'1.5 (the .5 is VERY important :) )
Start weight 120lbs
Current weight 120lbs
Goal weight 106lbs (for my height this is a healthy BMI of 20)

I'm aware I'm already a healthy weight but I don't feel comfortable in my skin, I started my own business with my DP after leaving a very stressful work environment 2 years ago and have put on over a stone in that time that just won't shift. None of my jeans fit me and I can't afford to buy new ones! I'm extremely small framed - tiny wrists and ankles - and at my current weight I feel sluggish and look chubby.

I'm apple shaped and most of my weight goes on my middle - hence the jeans not fastening anymore. I'd really love to join you guys and try 5:2 out. Anyway, enough from me, off to go read the inspirational 5:2 thread! Out of interest, what days do you fast?

Hope you are all hanging on and not blown away by the winds!

Welcome Hard! I fast Mondays and Thursdays. When are you thinking of starting?

Report
HardOutHereForATitch · 05/12/2013 17:27

Thanks Bssh!

I'm thinking probably Saturday and Wednesday as I have an odd working week and Mon/Tues are my 'weekend'! Going to start this Sat. I see a lot of posters here do LOF instead of >500 cals, and I'll probably do the same, I don't have a huge appetite, just cravings for anything sweet, carby or fatty. I'm best off avoiding altogether I think.
