Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all.
Fasting today.

Everything lined up for a good one.

Low ish carb yesterday.

Dp has been prepped that I'm having an early night.

No stress today.

Going to try lof - ime they happen by themselves or not at all.

Good luck anyone else.

Sorry not to name check but have 2 small kids clambering over me.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 05/12/2013 08:03

peplum, I've seen you about before, perhaps on a shred or c25k thread?

I'm also a non-meat eater, although I do eat fish.

This is the only WOE that fits in with my chosen food, low carb for instance cuts out half my meal!

dingdongduckyfuzz · 05/12/2013 08:20

Bit windy out there this morning! Better keep hopalong in the house or she'll blow over!

NFD today, not doing LOF despite good intentions last night. Really enjoying steady, sustainable weightloss that this WOE brings. Definitely a long term prospect. Not sure about my 5:2 plans over Christmas - will probably do 23rd then 27th or 28th, 30th and 2nd or 3rd Jan... But won't beat myself up over it and will aim to get more exercise than usual.

Good luck fasters today!

postmanpatsreindeer · 05/12/2013 08:24

Morning all! Frosty here, not windy at all.

Hooray not2b!

somewhere good luck. I did LOF on Tuesday (mint tea only for 36 hours), dropped 2kg and was only up by 400g this morning. I've just eaten a Belgian bun for breakfast so you might guess I'm not fasting today!

I'm doing a mystery shopper at Domino's tonight so no point in fasting today Xmas Grin

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 05/12/2013 09:22

5:2 over Christmas - I normally do Monday with a mini fast on Thursday, so I may just switch to 6:1 for Christmas week and probably a proper 5:2 the week after (I'm a bit of a NYE bah humbug type anyway).

Papayasoup · 05/12/2013 10:07

I’ve decided that on this shiny brand new thread 32 it was time for me to come out of the closet and make myself known. My name is Papayasoup and I am a 5:2er.

I’ve been following this WOE since Jan 2012 and started reading these threads in Feb if I recall correctly, somewhere between 12 and 15. So really it is time for me to contribute as well and Bsssh question on stats is as good a time as any!

Maybe first a little bit about myself, I’m 36 and live in Asia so read up on all the day’s antics when I get up in the morning, which sets up my F/NFD/16:8. 5:2 is virtually unknown here apart among a few expats but I’ve tended to keep it to myself in any case apart from DH and a few friends, who I bore to tears as I was quite evangelical after the 1st month. Like you’ve all said many times it has just been so easy! I found 5:2 after hearing MM being interviewed on BBC Breakfast over Christmas and it seemed like something I could do. I was nearly back at the heaviest I’d been after having successfully maintained (at a higher weight than today) for 6-7 years. It really had been a case of it creeping up and having spent the last 12 months losing and gaining the same 5lbs. My clothes were also all getting too tight and I was refusing to buy new ones having binned the size above 5 years previously.

I’ve picked up a huge amount of helpful information along the way from these threads such as leaving eating to as late as possible, 16:8, no snacking and finding easy ways of incorporating most bang for my buck exercise in my routine having done Shred on and off now for the last few months and I’ve joined the gym where I do a 30min circuit during my lunchbreak. The TDEE calculator was also a revelation as was inputting everything in MFP over the first few months and explained totally why the weight had been creeping up. Finally, all the recent talk of LOF has gotten me thinking, as I am a lunch and dinner faster (I’ve done 24h LOF only a handful of times).

Now for the stats – I’m continental European so think in m and kg but I’ve tried to convert accurately. Stones are beyond my comprehension though!
Height: 1m71, 5.6, medium build
SW post-Christmas and after falling face first in the turkey, chocolate back in the UK and just off the plane at home so maybe a bit of post-plane bloat going on: 69k, 152lbs – BMI 23.5.
GW 60-62kg, 132-136lbs. If I recall correctly I achieved that after about 3 months and maintained until the summer holidays where I went a bit lower beforehand to 58.5kg to allow for the inevitable upwards movement and to be able to enjoy croissants guilt-free. I came home from my 2-week holiday just shy of 132lbs, so was very happy with that but I did skip breakfast on a regular basis.
I think I then re-set my GW to 59kg, 130lbs as I realized sub-60kg, was possible
CW this morning I was 57.5, 126lbs but I’m trying to get ready for the new onslaught of Christmas fun (I’m aiming for SWATH with wiggle-room built in) and I was curious to see what I would look like if I edged closer to the lower normal BMI for my height. This is also post very good fast days and low cal NFD (unintentionally) so as the end of the week edges closer it’ll go back up. I’ve rather been maintaining around 58.5-59.5kg, 128-131lbs for the last 4 months.
My new GW is to finish weekends around 59kg – yes I am a daily weigher! I didn’t measure initially but I’ve definitely lost a lot more inches than I ever imagined I would. My dress size ranges by brand but I’ve definitely gone down 2 sizes with most brands but am a bit annoyingly between sizes at the moment.

I also started exercising during my summer holidays as I realized that in addition to fat loss I’d lost muscle as well. Whether I had before but had not noticed I’m not sure as I hadn’t really exercised in a few years (I used to be a regular at yoga and a once a week 5k runner prior to DD and a full-time job which led to me cutting out me-time). But in any case, things were a bit too far south and I wanted to try and heave it back north! So now my goal is really to decrease my fat % and increase my muscle mass. I go to the gym where they measure me once a month and it seems to be going in the right direction, albeit slowly but I don’t have the stats on hand.

Like many of you I try to be good during the week so that I can thoroughly enjoy my weekends. I am also mainly low GI during the week and definitely try to leave the bread to the weekend, as although I love it, it does not love me. Apart from this week I haven’t fully fasted over the last few months, partly due to lots of work travel but also being able to maintain without it. I do however do 16:8 nearly every day, except maybe sometimes at the weekend and do mini-fasts along the way. I usually have a light lunch on a work-day (soup or salad) and a normal dinner (with wine and desert a few times a week!). But again no snacks! One of the reasons I haven't fasted as much is that I did experience what I thought was a fair amount of hair loss when I was losing weight but it has proved temporary and now seems under control. But it had been enough for me to get worried about it. Apart from that I’ve felt great and the first few weeks was practically euphoric and definitely suffered from insomnia and very vivid dreams. I’ve definitely had more spring in my step. My appetite has reset itself but I’ve also noticed that as I fast less that it has expanded a bit as well but within reason. I’m still learning to stop eating when I am full!

Epic post over! A big thank you to all of you on the thread, you’ve had me chuckling to myself, nodding in agreement and learning loads. I love food (cooking and eating), so love it when the thread goes in that direction. I’ll try and post a bit more regularly but the time-zone difference does make it a bit harder but I’ll try and do my bit.

My FD is drawing to an end. I had a yoghurt this morning as I needed to take some tablets that I couldn’t take on an empty stomach and some chicken and veg planned for dinner. I don’t calorie count anymore so I’m probably somewhere between 5-700 for the day, which I am more than happy about. I had another FD on Monday, so that’s it for the week! Looking forward to the 3 NFD with the start of Christmas kicking in.

Papayasoup · 05/12/2013 10:10

Sorry for long post but once I started I couldn't stop!

BsshBossh · 05/12/2013 10:39

Welcome Papaya!

BetsyJingleBells · 05/12/2013 10:50

Hello Papaya! You started the same time as me (assuming you mean Jan this year). Good to hear your story and glad you've popped up to post. Do you do much Asian cooking? I'd love to hear about that if you do Grin

Fast day here, woke up grumpy (had to apologise to the kids for grumbling at them unnecessarily!) and I think it's going to be a lunch only day for me as DH is doing the same by necessity so if I don't have to produce something later then I'm very happy.

I had to cycle against the wind today with a bike load of heavy groceries and it had me swearing as much as I do when I Jillian so I'm guessing that was rather a good workout! Good job as I've done no proper exercise beyond my general day to day activeness. The short days bring rather limited energy reserves for me and I don't seem to be able to muster up anything else.

However, I was thinking that I'm sure this time of year would normally bring weight gain for me and that is certainly not the case this year so I should be grateful for that. I'd like to think that this 4 days a week of zero booze and only tiny occasional forays into the sugar pot must be doing my general health some good.

Slightly despondent by the non-shifting scales (I know, I know, really shouldn't focus on that) so I took some measurements instead and I though they must be pretty good for a 9 stone 12 ish 5'5"er - 26.5" waist, 32" under bust, still slightly hefty round the widest bum/hip area 39.5" so it's fairly obvious where all my excess pounds are stored! It's more like 37 around where my hip bones are, which is a massive improvement and I know loads has shifted from there in the last few months by the feel of my hip bones.

Apologies for my self-obsessed post. I try not to do it too often Xmas Grin Sometimes I wonder what all the weight is - I don't look 10 stone, I know it's not muscle and I'm a medium to small frame.

Eugh, sorry, boring - I really will stop now Xmas Wink

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/12/2013 10:50

Thanks BsshBossh. I last ate at 8.30pm so so far I have gone 14 hours without anything and feel absolutely fine so far. I have been having chewing gum on fast days as I think it tricks my brain into thinking I have eaten and it helps me keep fasting.

I am not fasting Christmas Day or Boxing Day as I am cooking Dec 25th and then we are going to PIL on the 26th. I will enjoy whatever there is and try not to sulk that I no longer am able to eat for the sake of it.

BCF - I am totally confused by what you posted but I know it is me being thick and not you not explaining well as I am sure you are Blush

Well done on your None Scale Victory somewhere.

Dotty342kids · 05/12/2013 10:54

FD for me today. Making Moroccan slow cooked lamb for the family and I've got a vegetable chilli out of the freezer for myself. Yum.

Christmas fasting....... now there's a thought Smile. I think I'll prob do Sun 22nd and then either Fri 27th or Sat 28th as got various social things going on the other days in that week. Unsurprisingly Grin
Week after will prob do Mon and Thurs as normal as not particularly got any plans yet. Should def be ok to fit in two FD's somewhere.
Good to plan ahead!

BsshBossh · 05/12/2013 10:54

Betsy a 26.5 in waist OMG Envy.

BetsyJingleBells · 05/12/2013 10:55

not2 Woohoo! Have a good trip :)

BetsyJingleBells · 05/12/2013 10:57

I must have small internal organs bssh!

BetsyJingleBells · 05/12/2013 11:01

(Also, that made me feel better - thanks bssh, you know I'm totally envious of your exercise regime and amazing self control don't you? Xmas Grin )

sweetiepie1979 · 05/12/2013 11:11

Okay I'm trying to not let the scales ruin my day but I'm the same weight today as I was when I finished my veryggood all most fast mini fast on Monday. Healthy ish day on Tuesday a good fast yesterday with a 500 cal meal about 6ish. Did anybody else have slow weight loss at the beginning? I felt all light and fluffy yesterday and now I feel like a sack of potatoes. I really want to lose another 4/5 pounds by Xmas. Maybe it's because I'm 6 weeks postpartum could it be harder for me to
lose at this point? Any tips for me?

Papayasoup · 05/12/2013 11:23

Thank for the welcome!

Betsy no I don't cook much Asian food. Not a huge fan of Cantonese which is local cuisine but we have great Thai restaurants I enjoy eating out in!

Well done on the cycling in the wind.

Baloostika · 05/12/2013 11:59

After the bridal shower last night I think am ready for a LOF for 40 hrs. I feel really hungry right now but I will manage. No food till 11-12 Friday.

Dotty342kids · 05/12/2013 12:17

Betsy, that is a teeny tiny waist! I'm only 8-9lbs more than you but a good 10 inches more on the waist. Though I'm an apple shape so store it all on my middle. Not great from the health point of view.

sweetiepie at only six weeks post partum your body is still trying to settle and sort itself out, please don't worry too much about losing weight. I'm sure that as your body returns to normal and if you keep up the good eating habits, it'll all start to come off Smile

BsshBossh · 05/12/2013 12:22

Goodness sweetie I keep forgeting you're only 6 weeks post partum. Your body will still be a raging mass of hormonal and water fluctuations. I wouldn't stress about your weight right now. Take it easy...

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 05/12/2013 12:31

I agree, sweetie. 6 weeks after having a baby is much too soon to be worrying about losing weight! You just grew a whole new person, you should be taking it easy.

somewherebecomingrain · 05/12/2013 12:39

sweetie you are hardcore! I waited until ... Gosh ... 8 weeks or something. Just trust it and give it time. I must say it's been terribly slow for me - I'm one of the slowest on here - but to lose a stone and keep it off over 5 months (deliberately) is something I've never done before. Don't compare yourself, or at least don't think it's not working just cause you are going a bit slower.

Am on my LOF. Won't fight it if it gets too hard. Have frittata ingredients if needed. Thanks for encouragement postman. Will go with it if it seems possible,

So far I've had 3 milky coffees, a baby corn snack (like a single wotsit) and a miso. Obviously the corn snack not good but I'm trying to put it behind me.Blush

I had a burst of energy and just got lots of stuff done and that has improved my mood no end (was feeling a bit mis). The bursts if energy are a marvel of this woe.

How is everyone else getting on? Not that you need encouraging to speak up!

BiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuitBiscuit tomorrow.

somewherebecomingrain · 05/12/2013 12:44

Just checked sweetie I started exactly 2 months after the birth.

postmanpatsreindeer · 05/12/2013 12:57

Welcome papaya sounds like 5:2 is right up your street!

sweetie don't be so hard on yourself Thanks

betsy my waist is that size and I'm 5ft 4 and 8st 2 so yours is definitely tiny!

somewhere what's a corn puff between friends?

BsshBossh · 05/12/2013 13:02

FD check-in. LOF going well so far. No hunger (physical or mental) pangs so far. Lots of water and rosehip tea, a couple of black coffees. Like you somewhere I have a light soup planned for tonight if needed.
