Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee if I were you I'd try 24 hour LOF first... Even better, start with 20 hours or even less.

I started 5:2 and went straight into 24 hour LOF but that's because I was able to do it and felt fine.

I'll try anything once, if I get to 7pm tomorrow and need my soup, it's there in the fridge if I want.

I've got a meeting at 7.30 for 2 hours, so can drink black coffee and then like Bssh says, it's bedtime after that.

Right, another question for y'all: are you fasting during the festive season? I'm still doing 5:2 but am trying to work out which days as we'll have a house full of overnight guests for an entire week...

Will you lose more weight if you do a liquid only? I'm all about the weight loss

Report
BsshBossh · 04/12/2013 22:17

Personally, no, but I've broken through small (eg 2-3 week) plateaus doing them (the 36 hour ones).

I don't think I'll do full fasts over Christmas as we're going away. I'll probably just skip a few breakfasts, have a few lighter options, cut back on carbs some meals and then attempt some LOFs in January if I have any extra weight to shift.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 04/12/2013 22:21

I'm planning 2 fast days of christmas week, monday 23rd and friday 27th then Tuesday 31st and thursday 2nd

We don't get to socialise as DD's autism makes that very stressful, so extra food and treats will all be home based anyway

Hello! Marking place.

Think my appetite is shrinking - NSV. My mum and dad said I looked very slim and they are oblivious to such things. My waist measures under 30 inches.

Toffee I think anyone considering a zero cal LFD needs to be confident about 36 hr normal solid FDs, say first for 500 cals, then for 350 cals.

An alternative LFD or first step to a low cal LFD is with low carb shakes, which have moderate protein and fat, typically 140-150 cal.
So you can have up to 3 of them, plus a bit of milk in your coffees for a 500 cal LFD. They are fairly filling and don't raise insulin significantly.

in the interests of SWATH (Same Weight After The Holidays) I'm keeping up 5:2 over the hols.
However, I'll plan my FDs to avoid 25 or 31 Dec - I'm keen, not fanatical.

Lousy FD. For some reason I just found it really difficult today and it affected my mood, too. I was cold, miserable, and hungry. Ended up picking at rice cakes, bananas and drinking coffee so that I probably went over 500 cals anyway. And I've plateau-ed.

Anyone else ever find it heavy going?

Posh I found the entire school summer holiday heavy going and didn't manage one single properly successful FD. Put on 4 lbs but they were gone after 2 successful FDs when school resumed in September.

And yes I am hoping to be fasting over the Christmas period also just working out what days are best!

Finished my fast day intact.

3 coffees
1bouillon
Until 9:30 tonight. Then small apple, half mug of warm milk a 2 large sqs of 70% choc.

All in under 250.

Not quite liquid only but not bad. Won't eat until tmw afternoon earliest now as is norm for me, so two decent stints of fasting either side of those cals.

Still bloated though! Not sure I'll be braving the scales yet! Definitely got some 'unfinished business' due first Xmas Grin

Hello

Here's my stats:

5 ft 3 age 41, started 21 Feb 2013

SW 13 stone, hopelessly addicted to chocolate, drunk most nights. In denial. Heading towards middle age and a myriad of health problems.

Lost first stone in 6 weeks, has taken until now to lose second. Lots of stalling, bouncing, a touch of frustration. Have PCOS, which apparently makes losing weight hard.

However, my focus is health rather than fashion which is what inspires me to keep going. Some fasts are hard going, but most are pretty painless.

I don't drink much these days, and chocolate is a treat, not a necessity, I perhaps have one or two bars a week. Not giant ones!

Not one of the daily posters, I'm often a bit behind but always catch up, love your stories, jokes, hints and tips, links, etc. Could probably manage without you all but wouldnt enjoy it the same.

My advice to any starting out, go at your own pace and persevere.

I know this post is a bit boring and I haven't really touched the sausage theme, but hey its 4:30 am and I'm vegetarian.

bsshbossh I thanked you for one of your posts on the 5:2 fast diet forum just to say hi! Always good to see a mumsnet crossover on there.

It was a good question though, what do you eat the day after a fast in order to prevent the kind of eating that un-does the good of a fast and ruins your deficit.

Eggs are popular, soup for lunch.

Thanks for sharing peplum - you have done amazing things for yourself with this WOE: booze and choc habits kicked and controlled. Losing 2 stone despite having pcos too. Wow, Flowers for you for turning your life around.
