Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Ok so Saturday round two!

Had a lie down. Couldn't sleep which I think is part of the prob, been suffering a touch of the old insomnia recently and have bags galore!

Anyway have just done a facial steam to help clear ears and head, downed a very small, strong, sweet coffee and am about to try day again Xmas Grin

Betsy I seem to be an all or nothing sort. I can either sink a few bottles worth and still be completely with it, or I have one sip and my head starts hurting!

But it is the hangovers that are worse! Actually takes days to recover now when one hits! What happened to rolling in, in the early hours then up for work couple of hours later feeling fine??!!

Never mind!

Have to finish off half decorated tree and general house tidy/prep before doing my secret Santa bit later. Unbeknownst to dd and dp, I have pur-chased us all Christmas jumpers and silly hats!

Am going to wrap them, then dump my load under the tree later for early opening Xmas Grin

Dp is not an Xmas jumper type Xmas Grin

Well he wasn't Xmas Wink

But then he's definitely not a onesie type, but that didn't stop me from letting dd buy him one for Xmas!

Mwah hah hah hah haaaaaa!

Only had a bowl of porridge with peanut butter and sliced banana so far, apple juice, water , tea and coffee.
Chicken fajitas for all tonight.
Chicken, onions, peppers, salsa, mayo, sour cream, fried tomatoes and grated cheddar mmm.
Served with home made wedges, home made coleslaw and dd1 has requested baked beans to so will do some.
So looking forward to it!
Was meant to have cakes at sisters today but change of plan and have had nothing since 9am so looking forward to it a lot. Mmm.
Then whilst watching strictly come dancing going to share some chocolate (white choc buttons) and a nice hot choc with whipped cream and marshmallows. Mmm.
Love Saturday nights.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/12/2013 17:05

Not sure if I should be Blush or Grin Baloo.

Thanks for all the congrats though I feel a fraud as it isn't me that had the baby Grin. Had such fun looking for clothes today though. Mum and Baby doing well and hope to be home soon.

I am off to get in my PJs soon.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/12/2013 17:09

Oh, and we had about 3 hours free as DS3 is now homeHmmGrin.

Emmabryant123 · 14/12/2013 19:09

Change of plans.
Ended up with fishcakes, chips and beans lol.
No choc or hot choc now as to full up anyway and don't want it, so have just had dinner and my porridge earlier today and am full and satisfied.

ChristmasPudding6 · 14/12/2013 19:22

Bleugh. Too much pasta and bolognaise. Thankfully we have eaten early with the kids so plenty of time to use up the excess calories. How many calories does ironing burn?

Emma you have just reminded me about my brand new tub of hot chocolate in the cupboard!!! Maybe after my ironing (when effects of over eating subside - still not totally cured of this problem) I can settle down infront of Atlantis and enjoy a cup.

postmanpatsreindeer · 14/12/2013 19:46

emma and pud I beat you to it...I bought a Costa hot choc while I was out shopping! Skinny and without cream though Xmas Smile

turkey glad you're feeling a bit more with it now. Can't help you with the hangover business though as I don't drink!

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 14/12/2013 19:49

Turkey It is one of the few definite differences I have noticed about getting older: we need more sleep - although many folk of 70+ say they need less again.
Hmm
I only have an occasional drink, but I am a chronic bookworm.

I occasionally start a series during the day and then have to read all the books through the night until say 5am. Up to about age 30 I could do this, get up at 8am and work as normal. However, this has got progressively more difficult until now I find my energy is way down, not just the day after, but the 2 days after.

I have not noticed any change in my capacity to Choc Frenzy, thank goodness.
Xmas Smile

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 14/12/2013 20:00

Am way behind on this thread but checking in so I don't slink off and do the 'walk of shame' back into Gluttonville.

Two days of scoffing. It has been ridiculous. Thankfully I don't have much planned for the week ahead so can do two fasts. If I break even weight wise this week I'll be doing well.

Will catch up later!

EarSlaps · 14/12/2013 20:04

Hey all. NFD today, started with some yummy ear slaps I had in the freezer. Crayfish, avocado and tomato salad plus half a cookie for dinner. Potato wedges, ham cooked in coke, cauliflower cheese and a fried egg for tea followed by berries and cream. Feeling very full now!

All those who need new clothes, and whose old clothes are getting baggy, I really recommend checking out your local Facebook selling group. I've managed to sell loads of jeans and tops on ours. Today I was buying though- I got a bag full of Fat Face, White Stuff, Crew Clothing and Gap things for £35 (all size 8- gosh!). The other day I got a Jigsaw dress for a tenner! It has been strange too- the lady selling today was really petite so I assumed she was selling as she had lost weight. But no, she was just bored of those clothes and not wearing them anymore. Ok, so some of the things she had were too small, but it was strange to see that I could wear the same clothes as someone so slim.

Tiredemma · 14/12/2013 20:18

Right.

Im back.

Started 5.2 back at the beginning of may as I was 'battling' with my weight. Did 5.2 for one week and lost 2lbs- however had to stop as I went to the GP's to change my contraception and discovered I was 6 months pregnant!

Had DD mid september.

Desperately need to lose weight so here I am again.

BetsyJingleBells · 14/12/2013 20:30

Wow! Congratulations tiredemma! And welcome back Xmas Smile

ChristmasPudding6 · 14/12/2013 20:45

Welcome back to the thread tiredemma and big congratulations. I hope it's all going well. Can't imagine the shock of discovering you are 6 months pregnant!!!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/12/2013 21:41

Having a baby is rather drastic an excuse to not do 5:2 ShockGrin.

Welcome back and congratulations GrinFlowers

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 14/12/2013 21:42

Congratulations on your dd, TiredEmma !
Flowers

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 14/12/2013 21:57

That all sounds yummy, EarSlaps - but you're commiting cannabalism again !

My Saturday NFD has been greedy : sprouted brown rice, chili & several veg; burgers & salad; sprouted bread, cheese, chorizo, caviar paste; ice cream, frozen yog; large pkt popcorn; chocolate & bix; 5 helpings of rice pud.
Xmas Grin
My other NFDs I try to keep to TDEE. Sunday is FD.
Until New Year, I'll mostly ADF, to achieve SWATH (Same Weight After The Holidays)

mummyof2girlsx · 14/12/2013 22:22

Hello! Long time lurker and occasional poster here! Just wanted to thank you all for your truly inspiring, witty and encouraging posts. I rely on this thread to keep me going, especially on the more challenging fast days.

bigChoc and TurkeyAtYuleHoHo your posts actually make me lol! It is so nice to read such a friendly and supportive thread.

Well done on all your successes. I have been maintaining for a while now and must say I'm a bit worried about gaining weight over the festive period, so any hints and tips would be appreciated.

TalkinPeace I'm not sure if you remember but you encouraged me to try a beginners yoga class (always been a aerobic/high impact gym bunny previously) and it was the best advice! I am feeling more supple and toned than ever.

Sorry for the long rambling post!

TalkinPeace · 14/12/2013 23:24

tiredemma
Delighted that you are a happy mum - and interesting that fasting did not stop you either conceiving or having a healthy pregnancy.
I'm too old for such things, but useful for our younger readers Wink

mummyof2
so glad that the yoga is working out for you : as you get stronger it can get pretty aerobic, but is sustainable. Well done.

Breadandwine · 15/12/2013 00:17

Just wanted to say I'm another who's been maintaining for over a year.

Got down to the low nine stones and I seem to be settled here, using a mixture of

peplum41 · 15/12/2013 07:09

Hi fasters

Haven't been able to check in since Mon am, just caught up a little.

dotty thanks for veggi shepherds pie recipe

tip great reminder about diet drinks. I needed it. You look as good as your kitchen. Stream lined and enviably smart.

whimsical and Betsy also gorgeous, and bizarrely, nothing like I'd imagined. whims I also love the Reacher! But not tom cruise

toffee I didn't realise you where the poster once known as miss strawberry! Not sure how that one passed me by, but glad to know you/she is still with us.
tiredemma I remember you telling us you were pg, but didn't realise how far gone. Congrats. X

That's it for now, I think I'm up to last Wednesday, will save the rest for tonight's shift. You keep me company, as I'm on my todd.

Not2bObvious · 15/12/2013 08:24

Morning all. Welcome back TiredEm, congrats on the baby, what a lovely surprise(after you get over the shock of course Wink)
Earslaps I haven't seen any groups like that on fb but then I haven't looked. I'm seriously overdue a wardrobe clear out, maybe I should start the group myself! So fighting the urge to shop, would live some retail therapy.
Oh dead god, I just finished rotting up my cals for yesterday, no it didn't take me all night but it wouldn't have been surprising if it did. Just shy of 3800 cals, I reckon I ate over 25 quality street not to mention sandwiches/nibbles etc. I was at a kids party thing after my toast/cheese splurge of yesterday morning. I was so full last night but still ate Blush
Well I'm paying for it now, I could forgive people for thinking I was 4 months gone my belly is that round/swollen. I have another outing today, and again it's food centric. On a very necessary 16:8 and think I might do the driving, save myself a few hundred cals, also ensuring I'd be fresh for work tomorrow. But but, I like wine, oh such a greedy lush am I Sad

Not2bObvious · 15/12/2013 08:25

*oh dear god, totting - just a few corrections as usual Blush

ChristmasPudding6 · 15/12/2013 09:13

Not2 I'm in your camp today. Scoffed most of yesterday and no kids party to blame!! Can't say I even really enjoyed what I was eating. Felt rather over full and sick by bedtime.

I think I will save my appetite for a nice roast port lunch with all the crackling. It will be a pleasure to avoid the pick and mix counter at the cinema this morning. I'm taking a very large bottle of water with me.

somewherebecomingrain · 15/12/2013 10:22

Hello

I'm plateauing again although at half a stone lower than my previous plateau. At least 6 weeks at 11 st.

turkey and bigchoc I love your double act. Can you write a comedy book/ guide to 5:2 together? Bigchoc has the science, turkey has the woman on the street relatable quality, you both have the comedy, it could make some money! You could take it to the Edinburgh festival and win the Perrier the way you are going.

A big double page spread for shartgate.

Xx

somewherebecomingrain · 15/12/2013 10:44

Sorry I know thread has moved on from shartgate.

tip great pics. betsey too. Very slinky!
