Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I have a nasty cold and am coughing up gunk today so as it's a NFD I am smuggled up with a big bowl of porridge and a mug of vanilla chai.

I was planning on going for a run today (am doing Zombies Run C25k after having a couple of years without running due to plantar fasciitis) but am probably just going to go for a brisk walk instead.

I'm starting to see a trend of weight loss which is very nice, especially as I started last week in the aftermath of a stomach bug so spent a couple of days gaining back the weight I'd lost.

I weigh myself every day at the moment because that way it feels like less of a big deal, and I use an app called Libra which gives your average weight for the past 7 days each day so each days weight only affects the trend a bit. I'll probably cut down on the weighing once I feel more secure in my habits for this WOE.

I've only been doing this for a very short time but it strikes me that as we are eating to our TDEE most of the time it's a very good education in how to eat in a healthy sustainable way and that there isn't a feeling of being deprived now and getting to avoid chocolate later once I am thin which makes it feel as though the transition to maintenance might be fairly smooth.

sweetiepie1979 · 14/12/2013 09:58

Nottobe they are bound to notice!
Just woke up to a nfd after 3 dd1 this week and 2 in a row! So I'm going to have a nice hit cup of tea and toast and take it frim there. My throat is like sandpaper today. Very excited we are pitting the Xmas tree up and it's thefirst year dc1 van enjoy it wwith us hee hee

ChristmasPudding6 · 14/12/2013 10:09

Well done Not2 on your baggy SV and overall weightless.

Amazing achievement Tip and fab pics. You are an inspiration to us all with your helpful tips, advice and having maintained for a year is the proof that this is a WOL not a another yo-yo diet. For me, maintenance is my true goal, not a number on the scales (though like Rani I do pop on them every morning). I've lost plenty of weight in the past but have regained again, so I have never had the confidence before that I could stabilise my weight. It will be such a gift to myself to finally put the thought of food to one side so I can put my mind to other more important things in my life. I hate the way it can take over your life and mood.

Congratulations to Toffee. Brilliant news Thanks

NFD for me today but I'm getting used to not eating breakfast anymore. If I do eat in the morning I tend to favour a cheese sandwich or cheese and crackers. It seems to fill me up for longer than anything else. Lovely Wensleydale with cranberries yesterday. I don't do the blue stuff though. DH can polish off the Stilton.

My tip for preventing evening snacking is to eat a hot curry (no rice or bread) for dinner on a FD. It tends to kill off my taste buds so I'm not tempted to eat anything else.

Not2bObvious · 14/12/2013 10:12

Oh Sweetie I remember the first year each if my kids "got" the Christmas tree/Christmas decorations, so lovely, great feeling. The older I get the more I enjoy traditions, particularly establishing my own for my 2. Makes me all warm & fuzzy (and prob makes people I know roll their eyes at my silliness Xmas Grin)

Not2bObvious · 14/12/2013 10:16

Thanks Christmaspud for the congrats and the curry hint, fancied Indian tonight but following my morning binge (pretty much a toasted cheese sandwich- I'm your food twin Wink) I was thinking maybe not, but may well take your curry tip and put it into practise! Totally agree on the maintenance point too, it would be living the dream to finally escape the torture of yo yo'ing.

ChristmasPudding6 · 14/12/2013 10:49

"Living the dream" Xmas Grin love it.

Really should stop watching winter wipeout with kids and put the washing on but it's very funny. Kids love it too.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/12/2013 11:53

Morning all.

By 7.30am my pudding was steaming and I was on my way out to get petrol, money, baby clothes and chocolate for the new mummy Grin.

DH has dropped the kids at his parents and is at the shops. I am still guarding the steaming pudding. Did some ironing and then got DH to finish it off. Had the kids hoover the carpet and sweep the kitchen floor as it annoyed me they were all on computers and I was ironing and doing jobs.

Don't have to do much today. Weighed myself and we will gloss over that. Can you really put 2lbs on in 2 days? Sad.

Plan to eat today though not ridiculously.

Good luck to all who are fasting.

I even took time to do a facial scrub and my eyebrows! Grin.

Baloostika · 14/12/2013 12:15

HELP!!!
My bewbs are gone, gone.
As in fried eggs is d best description.
This is the only regret I have losing weight.
What do I to get some back, it is really bad and clothes don't look good on me at all without a good bra.
I had to order a add two cups VS bra which is d only thing that has worked when I dress up.
I need some of my bewbs back.
I have 4 DC whom I BF.
What can I do? Sad

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 14/12/2013 12:17

Morning all, sleepover survived, two tired girls here now, not to mention two tired parents! Christmas tree today, then tidy the house and try not to eat too many mince pies...

Turkey I seemed to have put on about half a stone in 24 hours yesterday, but feeling a bit less saggy and bloated now. Congrats on the new arrival!

Congrats to all on SV and NSVs and wow you look fab TIP! Might get round to posting a pic at some point...not as slinky and glam as the rest of you yet though

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/12/2013 12:34

Baloostika - sympathies as I have lost about 13 cm off my breasts since July last year. Easier to get a bra tbh though and they are still a good size. Maybe eat some chocolateConfusedGrin.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 14/12/2013 12:36

Ahem inamerry Grin.

postmanpatsreindeer · 14/12/2013 12:49

congrats toffee

rani hope you're on the mend soon

Wow tip looking good! Mantaining for a year is a great achievement. I have to wait until next June to find out if I've managed the same but it's looking hopeful so far.

Congrats bssh and vie on your losses

Nice long run for me this morning...two hours and over 10.5 miles. Deliberately slow one as I had not eaten breakfast or last night's dinner. We went to our favourite Indian but DP saw the proprietor coming out of the gents without washing his hands and we paid up and made a swift exit Xmas Shock

Southeastdweller · 14/12/2013 12:58

Howdy. Mini-fasting today after a few days of indulgence. I'm loving all the Christmas food that's around - Quality Street and mince pies at work yesterday and plenty of mulled wine out of work. I can recommend the meringue mince pies at Waitrose and I've also discovered the delights of banoffee and chocolate shortbread at Whole Foods Grin. Felt woozy after dinner last night but much better after a gym session shortly afterwards and will go again today. Still full up from yesterday and today may turn into a true fast but after reading Bssh's post last night I fancy some cola cubes from that shop, if I can cope with the tourists!

As a short-term maintainer, it's great to hear from you Tip on your year-long achievment Flowers. You're looking super and I must say that I really like your kitchen.

Congrats toffee.

Afternoon Festive Fasters Xmas Grin

Had some whiskey last night. Am such a light weight these days! Currently nursing an angry head.

Stayed up til 3 catching up on bit of telly. Ate plenty but made the cardinal sin of starting pre food! Only one mind, but bloody hell you'd think I'd drunk the bottle! I totalled 3 drinks in all and am probably going to achieve very little today as a result!

So far today have had 100 gallons of water, couple vit c tablets, alka seltzer, green tea, bacon double egg baguette with loads of chilli sauce, a star bar Xmas Grin. Have just gone for lie down.

I. Am. Pathetic!

Is this an age related thing???

And how are the drinkers finding their tolerance on 5:2? Has it been affected at all??

Fortunately I've picked the right day to suffer as dp has been away lots so is happy enough allowing me to wallow. Unfortunately that doesn't stop dd and the dog wanting to practically sit on my head while they share the contents of their minds with me!!

Anyone else suffering out there who can make me feel better about my state???.... Xmas Grin

Baloostika
Boobs - more than a handful is a waste according to DH
but building up your chest and shoulder muscles will make a big difference to how they hang as well as improving your posture.

southeast
I designed the kitchen from the foundations up. Its six years old now and I still love it.

And Thanks for all the compliments everybody.
The gym picture and the dress picture are a year apart
during that year my weight has fluctuated between 8st 10 and 9 st 6 depending on how recently I've been on holiday.
But a couple of fasts and strict weeks brings it back to within a pound of 9st

and ALL OF YOU can get to the point of shrugging shoulders at the odd pound and fasting the next week to stay the size that suits you best Smile

TalkinPeace · 14/12/2013 13:41

YET ANOTHER reason that getting our weight and health under control is important
www.theguardian.com/society/2013/dec/14/obesity-tidal-wave-cirrhosis

Baloostika · 14/12/2013 14:05

Toffee did I hear u say I should get fat again? Smile
I agree with u about the bra. Thanks for the consolation.
I'm still waiting for tips on bewbs enlargement anyways.

BetsyJingleBells · 14/12/2013 14:14

Turkey I had a period earlier in the year where I couldn't even drink one glass without getting an instant headache - probably a few weeks into 5:2. I got over it but my tolerance is still not what it was, though that's no bad thing! I haven't seen anyone else report similar until you today so maybe we're just a bit unlucky.

ChristmasPudding6 · 14/12/2013 14:16

Baloo sorry I can't help you out there. I never had any in the first place!

Turkey. I feel your pain, though thankfully not today. The things that help me is to make sure I drink a coke at the end of the night, take some alka seltzer before I go to bed and, a pint of water. Then I at least wake up in less of a state. Sorry it doesn't help now, but next time it might.
Hope u get well soon.

Baloostika · 14/12/2013 14:17

Tip I don't even have a spoon full Blush.
What are those exercises I can do pls?

ChristmasPudding6 · 14/12/2013 14:22

Tip, that article reminds me of the video link someone put on here not so long ago. Was it Betsy? All about how fructose (if over consumed) is as bad for the liver as alcohol. in fact it even caused many other serious conditions usually associated with excess alcohol. Sobering thought.

BetsyJingleBells · 14/12/2013 14:28

Yes that was me ChristmasPud - I've got a real bug bear about our society's thoughtless over consumption of sugar. It should be treated more like alcohol in the way we think about consuming it. Robert Lustig was the lecturer in that film.

ChristmasPudding6 · 14/12/2013 14:36

I agree. It's so frustrating that so much is written and known about the growing problem of obesity and yet with all this insight from people like Robert Lustig nothing is changing in the way they tackle it!! Surely is cost more to deal with the consequence than the sugar pushing corporations are making!? They should ban all junk food advertising IMO and put the advertising money towards helping the NHS cope. Grrrrrr [snarley faced santa]

TalkinPeace · 14/12/2013 14:40

Baloostika
DD reading over my shoulder recons this lady's videos are good
www.blogilates.com/arms-upper-body/
and you do not need proper weights - use a tin of tomatoes as a 500g weight !

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 14/12/2013 14:43

Oh no sorry toffee Xmas Blush post not-very-much-sleepover brain at 'work' there! Anyway, congratulations!
