Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Mrsflorrick
I have seriously considered buying one of the elastic corsets to pull my lower ribs in a bit and give me more of a waist.
None of that lacing rubbish, but not curving out - which they do after two big babies when overweight.
I do not expect it to have any effect on my weight, just on my waist proportions.

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 18:56

Tip. I have one. It was given by physio to support my SI joints and my massive diastisis recti (stomach muscle split-8 fingers wide Shock).

Sadly it looks bulky under clothes so no help on the silhouette.

Perhaps one if those lace up Victorian jobs would help me Wink

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 13/12/2013 18:58

MrsF I am only 5'2 and cw 11.5 so looking at all the pics on here, I feel like a right fat munter compared to all the skinny Minnie's! Xmas Grin

Pre dd, I was a small size 8 (old money), but I had no waist/no hips and pretty much went straight up and down!

I always hoped, and am waiting to find out if has happened, that having dd would push my hips out a bit to give me a waist!!

I have fairly slim legs and a little bum to make up for it, but would love a nice in and out middle!

Being so short there is less space for this to take place in. Reading Tips post about ribs I think mine are prob outies if anything - which doesn't help!!!

Can't wait to be on here next year looking at my before and after Christmas pics!

So while I'm at it - Woot Woo!! All you pic posters! You all look amazing and it's so funny to see a pic of someone you have built a mental image of!

I think Betsy in my head was like a RL Mrs Potts from Beauty and the Beast! Xmas Grin

Homely, bosomy, short, blonde and round! Lol!

Now she's red hot sexy mama! Xmas Wink [MrSausageLeer]

Ooh elastic corsets??...

Are they for instant fix or if worn over longer period will they train ribs in??...

You look lovely Tip - and wearing a proper grown up dress too - something I cannot seem to do. I love that you've maintained a whole year without suffering or pain (and even enjoyment!). Brilliant.

I am starting to acknowledge that my waist is unusually teeny for a post 2 kids normal type person. Thank you all for saying nice things and altering my perceptions of myself.

I will of course be irrationally envious of the women with legs up to here (can't do much about that) and less jiggle of thigh - but I am also too lazy to do the required amount of daily exercise to get the toning and keeping it up. Not eating for a bit is far easier...

Maybe 2014 will bring changes in that direction. It's perfectly possible, I've achieved far more in the last 2 years than I ever expected.

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 19:09

TIP!! ShockShockShock You look amazing!!! Wow. Beautiful dress and that gym photo of you sideways you look so super slim!!

Amazing. GrinGrin You do not need elasticated or Victorian corsets at all!!

Thanks For you (or Wine if you prefer).

BetsyJingleBells · 13/12/2013 19:12

I called myself Betsy to keep you off the sexy scent Turkey Wink Soooo fed up with being leered at in rl… Grin ha hahaaahaa

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 19:15

Good news about the PIL Toffee. Make sure you don't fill the child-free time with chores. Aside from you (taking it in turns with DH) steaming puds, get some down time young lady.

TiP you look fab.

I spent too many pennies at Mrs Kibble's sweet shop today and am really suffering the sugar lows right now! Couldn't resist at the time (rosy apples and sherbert lemons) but really am suffering the consequences now Blush.

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 19:19

Turkey. Alas the elasticated ones do nothing other than support you. They look bulky under clothes.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 19:25

Yes mum Bssh. Grin.

Have I don't this rubbish enough to give up and accept this week was a 6:1.

FD planned - plus felt rubbish - so no breakfast. Soup at 3 when too cold and weak to go without. 3 new potatoes, 1 scampi. 1 fried egg, slice of bread, chips, 1 chocolate cookie.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 19:26

1 piece od scampi, not one portion.

Not2bObvious · 13/12/2013 20:28

Oh Toffee I love my kids but I'd love someone to give me a night off with my dh - can't believe you're not on their doorstep 6am tomorrow. Deadbeat Mom here Xmas Blush
Hope you feel well enough to enjoy and in keeping with everyone else's words, don't spend all child free time in the kitchen!
Thanks ladies for congrats on my SV, have indulged a bit tonight but in the back if my mind I so want to hold onto my new skinny'ness Xmas Grin Going to close the kitchen soon, not just yet but soon....promiseConfused

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 20:51

Three kids for pensioners is a lot though and there is always trouble if they are there too long so Sat lunch time til Sun lunch time is enough.

Had another biscuit. Roll on tomorrow when I can eat! Starting to get my appetite back.

TalkinPeace · 13/12/2013 20:57

I have a very able bodied and wealthy mother who loves to look after any kids other than mine.
I can count on one hand the number of nights I've not had to listen out for kids - DS is 13

BUT
I have the most supportive husband in the world
who has jigged diaries with me over the last 16 years and saved us both a fortune in child care.

For those who can get to Southampton area in an hour and have an inkling who DH is, message me and I'll send you the tickets link : and we can do coffee at the interval Wink

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 21:01

Well done, tip. Maintaining for a whole year is a very significant achievement. You and others demonstrate how 5:2 is a longterm and practical WOL.

Just heard our family has grown by one!

Baby clothes shopping for me tomorrow!!

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 21:16

Turkey

You have made great progress and you are losing really quickly.
We skinnier ones, trying to trim the last few stubborn lb, get quite envious of the losses in the weekly avian report !

You will continue IFing and you will do pressups and abs until that avian bod is all slim toned muscle.

(But remember to rest !!)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 21:25

I'm upstairs now making cards to celebrate annoyed the shops aren't open so I can go and buy something cute.

sweetiepie1979 · 13/12/2013 23:50

Does anyone else get cold and flu symptoms at the end of each fast day? The past few fast days I get a really sore throat and runny nose. I'm wondering if it's detox symptoms or husband thinks it's lack of vitamins on fast day bit I alwas try to have green veg on fast days.

MrsFlorrick · 14/12/2013 00:35

Sweetie. Not had that happen at all. Both DC have a cold and there are lots going around just now.

Are you drinking enough? Could be dehydration? Sore throat sounds like it. Not sure about the runny nose though.

You could try one of those multi vits for post natal period. I used the pregnacare ones. Best hair and nails I've ever had. I've recently been wondering whether to buy them again (despite not being pregnant or post natal) as I've not ever had a multi Vit work so well before.

Is the sore throat every fast day and does it disappear again?? Allergy perhaps?

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 14/12/2013 00:36

sweetie No, I've never had that problem. I feel fine and particularly full of energy on FDs.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 14/12/2013 00:42

Just finished a 370 cal FD. Unusually for me, I spread out the cals over the day. I just go with how I feel.

I had mid-morning cocoa, then an Atkins shake for lunch and a miscellaneous collection for dinner: beef consommé, spicy veg juice, melon and kiwi cocktail, dried butternut squash chunks (the dried chunks are from Dukan, a bit of a ripoff, but v low cal , tasty and in a resealable bag)

sweetiepie1979 · 14/12/2013 05:07

Mrs f we do seem to be passing a cold between us all in this house for a few weeks many it's that. I'll give the multi vitamin a try also though.

Not2bObvious · 14/12/2013 08:43

Hmmm, I'm beginning to wonder if Saturday mornings are my weekly pig out time. Just snaffled 3 slices of buttery toast with some cheese, ummm cheese. I was toying with the idea of a 16:8 but as I was saying yesterday I am fighting against the urge to be over controlling. I sometimes struggle with how adaptable/easy this WOL is - well as long as you can do the 500 cal days! 19 pounds in 7 months, i still can't believe itXmas Grin I am meeting family I haven't seen in 7 months tomorrow and the shallow part of me really hopes they notice. I'm also fighting the urge to shopping, I've bunged out a good few pairs of jeans and lots of stuff is starting to get unflattering looking, bit baggy. I cannot believe I am complaining lol! I'm thinking of making a deal with myself that if I maintain my loss for the next 3 weeks , I can treat myself to a nice pair of jeans in the sales.
Tip you're an inspiration, a year of maintenance is a fab acheivement, v encouraging.
