Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I only have a few minutes until I have to do the school run but maybe some soup would be a good idea, even though I will end up over 500 after having dinner.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 15:03

Soup is about 180 calories so I am having some. I am so cold I have put my coat on as I will be leaving soon anyway.

Toffee You really sound in need of a siesta. Can your DH take over ?
At least make sure you have an early night.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 15:27

Sweetie
The weekly weight loss for a particular person is affected by so many factors.
Theoretically, if someone averaged TDEE on all her NFDs, she would have a 3000 cal weekly deficit on 5:2, which would lead to a 1lb weekly loss.

However, we are not all machines. Some people have a much faster or slower loss, even if they follow all the rules.

Also, sometimes the improvement is in inches, rather than weight. This still improves your health: it means fat is being lost, but muscle gained (this can happen even if you think you haven‘t increased your exercise).

Just be patient and try not to over-stress your body, since it has had to cope with a lot of changes over the last months.

TalkinPeace · 13/12/2013 16:14

TADAAAAH TOOT TOOT TIDDLY POM

Sorry, just thought I'd let y'all know that I weighed in today
8st 12 (BMI 20.6)
which is what I weighed this time last year

am pretty pleased to have maintained for a year with several holidays and days off and enjoyable dinners
and always been able to pull myself back into line.

Remember
5:2 is NOT ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS
losing excess weight is a side effect of fasting, not the reason for it

shall go pull on a frock and take a piccy in a minute :-)

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 16:20

TiP wooooohhhhooooooo! Sterling work and an example and inspiration to all :) And just in time for Christmas!

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 16:22

Not2b great weight loss. And Bennet fab inch losses! Isn't this WOE terrific!!! You fall off the gravy train, you keep on climbing back on. That is the journey to success!

vieenrose · 13/12/2013 16:22

Just popping in to say hello
Well done to all the loosers
Bravo to Bestybell, you are an inspiration to us all
I haven't had time to visit these threads much these last few weeks but I am hanging in there and am doing well. I now weigh 57 kilos (just under 9 st) compared to 74 kg (11 st 9.1) at the same time last year.
As a result, I'm approaching the festive season in a much lighter frame of mind. Not to mention with a much better choice of things to wear

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 16:24

Toffee you must respect yourself enough to demand some rest. Who can you ask? When is DH returning home? How much rest can you demand for yourself this weekend?

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 16:25

Well done vie :)

TalkinPeace · 13/12/2013 16:25

vieenrose
picture needed of that impressive shrinking.

vieenrose · 13/12/2013 16:25

TIP I hadn't seen your message, congratulations to you too
One of these days, I'll pluck up enough courage to post a picture too

alwaysanauntie · 13/12/2013 16:50

Hi all, just popping on to say a quick hello & merry Xmas. Well done tip for your 1st anniversary of many maintaining your new weight, awesome inspiration as ever! managed to just about stick around the 60 kg mark as haven't really fasted for the last month or so (illness, exams and ludicrous amounts of Xmas chocs in the office). Anyway, keep it up everyone, I'll be back i to fasting soon i promise (especially NS!) Xmas Grin

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 17:07

DH home, yay! I am doing the kids their tea and he will do ours later. My soup was lovely, really warmed me up. I can recommend the Pea and Mint soup from M&S.

Quick question as no one has answered my post - I forgot to steam my Xmas pud when I made it 2 weeks ago, I plan to steam it tomorrow but will it be okay?

Well done TIP!! You must feel very proud. I did feel a little bit told off about 5:2 not being a weight loss plan though Grin. I was doing it initially because I needed to lose weight but as you all know by now Wink it is the teaching me not to be scared of food that I am gaining from this way of eating way of life.

Bssh PIL have just phoned and offered to have the children to sleep this Saturday. DH said no to me but I have said no, they are going but they can go for half of Saturday and a bit of Sunday rather than all of Saturday and half of Sunday. Not too much for the PIL but still enough for us to have a break.

I will be in the kitchen mostly as I have to steam my pudding for 6 hours.

sweetiepie1979 · 13/12/2013 17:40

Thankyou everyone for advice which I am now listening too. My friend said I am too hard on myself and she doesn't know about my 5.2ing. So many people say that too me I think there must be some truth in it. So I'm going to not weigh myself until January and do my best between now and then.

Toffee regarding Xmas pudding I made 4 and forgot to steam them too. That was over a week ago so I'm going to steam tonight and tomorrow for 3 hours then when I give them as presents tell folk to steamn for another 3 hours.
(Disclaimer: I've never made a pudding before advice offered with no real experience!)

TheRaniOfYawn · 13/12/2013 17:42

Wooho, vieenrose! That is brilliant inspiration because you've done pretty much what I'm hoping to do.

Last month I was at at my heaviest at 72kg with a BMI of just over 27 and I would like to end up with roughly a BMI of 21ish as I have a pretty small frame. So it's nice to hear stories of other people doing this.

TheRaniOfYawn · 13/12/2013 17:45

Toffee, there was a bug going round where I live which sounds like what you had. I had the nausea version, but lots of people had several days of stomach cramps and generally feeling pretty bleurgh.

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 17:45

TIP!!! Thanks Well done. Very inspirational. It's good to know that once I get there (goal) I can easily stay there Grin

You all sound so tiny! 8 stone this and 9 stone this. Makes me feel like a massive giant. That said. At 8 stone something my BMI would be about 16!

Thanks To all the other loser this week
And WineWineWine for meeeeeeeee later once DC are in bed

TalkinPeace · 13/12/2013 18:00

But I do not have Betsys teeny waist .... or a camera that takes decent pictures in low light .... however pic uploaded of me in a dress. (not a common occurrence)

TalkinPeace · 13/12/2013 18:04

MrsFlorrick
Its all about proportions.
I am 5'5 and my waist is 29 inches - but I have minimal bum.
and there are differences in frame size
a gym friend who is a model has the teeniest knee joints
also
in yoga it became very apparent whose ribs slope inwards (giving a teeny waist) or outwards (giving little or no waist)

try for low but healthy body fat - all else is just approximations.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 18:25

Good luck with your pudding sweetiepie. I won't know until Xmas day if it is okay.

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 18:28

TIP. I know. I'm just over 5'10" cw is 72kg which is 158lbs I think.
The last 6 lbs are on my waist. 32" Sad

My waist used to be really tiny 26inches (i was about 69kg so not exactly thin). Then I had two massive DC. Both 10lbs and DD was 23 inches long and DS was 22 inches. It pushed my ribs out a lot. Over two years on I don't expect they will go back now.

Still almost back to "normal". It feels good to wear my old clothes. That novelty hasn't worn off yet.

Need to go and sort out warring DC and bath them and stick them in bed. Back later.

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 18:30

Oh and Bigchoc. You'd better rush if you want to get to my choccy stash. I am planning to tuck in later.... Wink
