Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

morning everyone

been awol from the boards most of the week, but not from 5:2 Grin

crikey, when you lot natter you certainly get stuck in Shock

some fab advice and support over the last few pages, it's lovely to see, it really is Thanks i can't keep with with everyone by name, but the pictures and personal testimonies are brilliant too

anyhoo, just thought i'd pop in to announce my new NSV - i have now lost 4" from my rib cage, 4" from my waist and 3 from my hips Grin

way back in September i joined a thread 'lose 2 stone by christmas' and i thought if i did half of that i'd be chuffed, but it's looking like i'll do it, only got 2.5lbs to go Grin

NFD days now until monday, fingers crossed the running i've done this week pays off too

have a good day y'all

BetsyJingleBells · 13/12/2013 10:57

Thanks for the lovely comments [preens]! Also Shock at envy from those with BMI lower than mine

Stats for those who want to know:
current weight 9stone12, 5'5", age 38, BMI 23
I've been hovering around 9.12 and 10stone-ish since August.

5:2 start weight was 11 stone 2 back in January. Prior to that I'd lost 32 pounds over 15 months through eating mindfully & taking up sporadic exercise

In theory I'd like to shift another 5lbs (ie closer to BMI 22), but it is not happening at the moment. However, if I can get through the xmas period/winter relatively unscathed that will do fine :)

It is interesting to note that if I had started this WOE at my current weight I probably wouldn't have carried on - the weight loss was a primary motivator at the beginning but I do it now mostly for the health benefits and as a way to maintain easily.

Dotty342kids · 13/12/2013 10:57

That's brilliant BennetGirl, well done to you!

BetsyJingleBells · 13/12/2013 11:04

FABULOUS nsv Bennetgirl! And you MrsF with your small size workout clothes Xmas Grin

Sweetiepie Some people lost weight quickly on this WOE because they were very overweight due to eating all the pies (and cakes, biscuits, chocolate, wine etc). You are carrying extra weight because you've had a baby. It's different. Be kinder to yourself please! IT IS NOT A RACE! This WOE is a long term thing not a quick fix. Think where you'll be a year, not next week.

Again, be kind to yourself. Please.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 13/12/2013 11:11

Festive no need to throw away! No extreme actions are required here.

I do agree with the advice about letting your clothes do the talking though, because as has been said a million times before. Quite often inches come off faster than weight.

Just keep it simple..

Weigh once a week. On the morning after your last fast day of the week. Do that after you have eliminated (love that word for pooing Xmas Grin ) and wearing roughly the same kind of clothing/naked.

This is the only one that counts!

If you sneak a peek early, firstly (wags finger) you're asking for trouble!, secondly it doesn't count!

And always always always take into account things like.... time of month, type of food eaten recently, whether been unwell, whether drinking enough water, whether you've been drinking a lot of alcohol recently.....

All of these things can superficially affect the results!

But won't last!

Wow Betsy, what an amazing figure! I'm very jealous of your figure, as you can see in my picture I'm very straight up and down with no real waist. Plus I am back to being pretty flat chested.

Bennettgirl and MrsF- amazing NSVs.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 13/12/2013 11:33

Turkey I know I must resist the scales. I must!

MrsFlorrick really interesting how different your experience was. I had GD too but I actually lost a lot of weight in pregnancy because of it. When DC emerged I was lighter than I was pre-pregnancy. Then lost over a stone BFing even though I was having cake and lattes every day Blush Needless to say this run of good fortune did not persist after I began mix feeding Hmm Am now back to immediate post-birth weight.

BetsyJingleBells · 13/12/2013 11:36

I hadn't seen your pic earslaps - erm hello! Stomach muscles! AMAZING! Note I am fully covered in my pic and doing a hip quarter turn thing to make them look smaller, and entirely hiding porridge arse Grin

Not2bObvious · 13/12/2013 11:47

Another wow from me Betsy super slinky looking, lovely and lean!
Feel like I'm walking on air this morning, 11.0.2!!! Down 1.4 from last week and 19 pounds in total since end of May. I don't remember being this weight, my lightest adult (well 20 year old me) was 9.4 - fast forward 4 years I was 11.2 at 24. And I gained/lost up/down of the next 15 years.
But I think I got it cracked now Xmas Grin My only worry is I might adopt to stringent an approach to good, therefore I'm having a bar of choc with my lunch! Embracing the no snacking very seriously for the 3 weeks. Swath is the aim of the game. All me me me, sorry guys, hope we're all having a lovely Friday

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 12:10

Funnyfestiverunner. Yes. My GD was in the heavily insulin resistant category. I was producing massive amounts of insulin to control blood sugar and all that insulin laid down fat fast and made me hungry.

I didn't know till second pregnancy that GD varies enormously and can be hard to diagnose.

I had lots of blood tests first pregnancy and two glucose tolerance tests. The second confirmed GD but they lost the results and forgot to tell me. It only came to light 7 months later during a GP visit. Hmm

Your GD must have seen normal insulin production but consistently high blood sugar hence weightloss.

My blood sugar would be normal at fasting and back to normal 3 hours after eating. It would be high 1 to 2 hours after eating. But my insulin levels were consistently off the scale. Hence massive weight gain and two massive babies.

GD is no fun. Second time around I was closely monitored. And I ate a low GI diet to help. But it was torture as I was so hungry all the time for the last 3 months. And I still gained a massive amount of weight despite v healthy low GI eating. And DS was bigger than DD.

TheEyeofHarmony · 13/12/2013 12:53

Thank you for the collective kick up the arse on the last thred, wow you lot write quick, it seems to have done the trick and I am heading back down towards my goal weight.

Well done all those with sucesses and hang on in there all those stuck.

Thank you for the advice TurkeyAtYuleHoHo I shall drink water festivally from now on - can I have a sparkler in it and a little umbrella too?

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 13/12/2013 13:03

Betsy WOW! You look amazing!

Just a quick check in as I'm having a really busy day and feeling flabby. haven't slept properly for a couple of nights and that always seems to affect my ability to lose, not to mention making me extra hungry...

Southeastdweller · 13/12/2013 13:04

Betsy You're looking very foxy in that pic...I always imagined you with shorter hair, btw.

In my Christmas jumper and going to take a pic soon and upload it later.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 13/12/2013 13:09

wolf whistles at betsy. Festive jumper dress you say, must go hunting.

Papayasoup · 13/12/2013 14:15

Betsy, earslaps, WOW! You both look amazing!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 14:17

Hello all

I am feeling so cold, tired and haven't eaten a thing all day. I just can't face anything. Did some shopping this morning and have messed up on shopping having gone over budget a bit. Hoping a friend who usually kindly sends the children some money will do so so I can just call it buying in advanceWink.

Still have a bit of tummy ache that feels like food poisoning but better than I was.

Hope everyone is okay.

Papayasoup · 13/12/2013 14:31

toffeesausage it definitely sounds like you are fighting off some kind of bug. Any chance of a lie down this afternoon?

Papayasoup · 13/12/2013 14:39

I only managed one fast day this week as I was traveling and even though I don't usually eat breakfast I cannot resist a hotel one. I was then taken out for lunch and dinner but the advantage of Chinese food is that although greasy there aren't any carbs. Or veg for that matter! And no Wine. Managed a mini fast today, no food for 24h then a steak and wine dinner. Kitchen now closed so should be within TDEE.

Tomorrow and next week will be another matter with a 40th, my birthday and a few Christmas drinks. And in one week need to be bikini ready as off to Australia on holiday. Hopefully I'll fit in a few gym sessions to counter-balance it all. But who cares if not quite where I want to be as I'll be on the beach with the family and over 20lbs less than a year ago Xmas Grin!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 14:43

I can barely keep my eyes open as I am so worn out. Starting to feel hungry but can't eat as a fast day and I don't know what dinner is yet. DH can't get the kids so I will have too and have to leave at 3 for them and get home at 4.30pm.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 14:46

My friend said I was looking skinny today ShockGrin.

Papayasoup · 13/12/2013 14:47

toffee if you are feeling poorly and hungry I think you should eat something even if just a bovril or something similar. I nearly always have so something for lunch or mid afternoon on a fast day like a soup. Listen to your body and look after yourself. It sounds like the stress of the last few weeks is catching up with you

Papayasoup · 13/12/2013 14:48

Nice NSV toffee
