Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Bssh that's a great SV and NSV Envy.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 13/12/2013 07:54

I hope everyone is dressed in their Xmas jumpers today as its now Xmas jumper day! I am sitting here in my slightly big size 8 one (and I'm not normally a size 8 let alone having a baggy one!)

Baloostika · 13/12/2013 07:59

Eat u have a NSV there. Kudos Xmas Smile

TheRaniOfYawn · 13/12/2013 08:03

Fabulous victories!

I love hearing how well people are doing.

My in-laws are coming to stay from Monday to Wednesday of next week. They will expect nice food with puddings. I normally fast on Mondays and Thursdays.

So my thinking for next week is that I'll fast on the Sunday of this weekend, eat tasty food while the guests are here without counting calories but being sensible with portion sizes and making sure that the nutrition is good and then fasting on Thursday and Saturday to make the week a 4:3.

Does that sound about right?

BetsyJingleBells · 13/12/2013 08:24

Good morning!

I've posted my self indulgent selfie xmas pic to my profile - I have of course chosen the most flattering angle I could find :)

eat I just happen to be wearing my festive jumper dress! Reindeers and snowflake nordic style print. It is also a bit roomy as I bought it 3 years ago but it still looks nice and is warm so that'll do. Xmas Smile

SLightly hungover today, won't be attempting a fast day. I've been thinking I won't do another one for a while but I bet I end up doing at least one next week - Mondays are Fast days now and I am a creature of habit.

I'm very behind with the thread so I'll try and catch up later.

postmanpatsreindeer · 13/12/2013 08:32

Looking fab betsy!

Well done bssh and eat on your victories of any variety!

NFD again for me, weighed the same this morning as I did on Weds morning, however on Weds morning I had just finished a 36 hour zero cal fast Grin

No Christmas jumper here...bah humbug Xmas Smile

ChristmasPudding6 · 13/12/2013 08:34

Well done Bsssh

Weigh in today after a not so successful FD and still 1.2lb down on last week's weight. So 10 st 4.8. My sneaky mid week weigh in has been maintained.

It's not for everyone but I totally put this down to the 36 hour zero cal fasts I have done for the last three weeks. Just one a week and not necessarily sticking to 500 cal on my fast day. It's really kick started my weight loss again after feeling like I was plateauing.

Also this gives me more room for mini Fenzies. I used to be able to give BCF a run for her money but since the longer fasts my appetite has really taken a knock too. Never thought I would ever be able to say that!!!

ChristmasPudding6 · 13/12/2013 08:37

OMG Betsy you are positively tiny! You look amazing. Sorry I've forgotten your stats (SW GW) but whatever you r doing its def working.

ChristmasPudding6 · 13/12/2013 08:39
  • meant to say not sticking to 500 cal on my second fast day.
Breadandwine · 13/12/2013 08:47

Hi MrsS! Wondered where you'd got to!

when you do the maths they were all losing almost 2.5 pounds a week!

Sweetie I don't think that can be right: I lost 22lbs over 8 months - but the average weight loss by posters on the 52 fast diet forum is roughly 1lb per week.

Wrote a long post last night - and it disappeared into the ether. Will post again tonight. Sad

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 08:48

Betsy va va voooommm :)

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 08:49

Rani that sounds like a good plan.
Christmas well done on your loss!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 13/12/2013 09:22

Great photo Betsy!

Out for food again today (this week is a devil) so going to skip breakfast to try and counteract the crisp attack last night. Takeaway for dinner tonight and then I might try and do 16 hours. I'll see how it goes, don't want to put myself off doing a proper fast on Monday.

Dotty342kids · 13/12/2013 09:39

Betsy you look amazing, just wow!

Toffee I must have missed that particular name change - how confusing! Nice to know you're still here anyway Smile

I'm beginning ot think that I might try and chuck in a 36hr LOF next week, to see if that gets the losses going again as still persistently remaining at 10st 4 - 10st 7 each week.

Was about to break my fast with a lovely toasted fruit muffin but now I'm thinking "shall I hold out till lunch when I'm meeting a friend?" instead. I'm hungry but you know, sometimes a little mini challenge is good, right?

sweetiepie1979 · 13/12/2013 10:03

Hi ok I'm going to fast again today. breadandwine my maths isn't good so your prob right. We'll done bssh
Right toddler at nursery just fed baby. Quick tidy up, shower then walk in to town to pay bills. Going to do liquid only until about 5 then have a waitrose low cal meal. I want to be safely out of the 11s by Xmas day that means 10.10 that's 4 pounds in 2 weeks.....

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 13/12/2013 10:05

ChristmasPud... Loved your NSVs in last night's post! Well done you!!!

Rani sounds good. Though why not make it a 5/2 instead, or have the odd mini (-1000) fast, or try 16:8 on a few days. Mix it up a bit. The real key to sustainability with this woe/wol is to use its flexibility to your advantage. There is often talk that it confuses metabolism further and can actually help keep things moving, to not be too good all of the time.

Sweetie think you really need to take on board some of the advice on here. It sometimes sounds like you're fighting an uphill battle, which can't be good for your mental or physical health! It's still very early days after pg. Agree with B&W too.

Remember that a lot of people started their weight loss elsewhere. Just go back and read the inspiration thread to see that.

5:2 is NOT a diet!! Except in that it is the food/drink we consume kind of diet. It is not a quick fix 'do this for six weeks lose 2 stone' kind of diet.

Those who embrace this woe as a longterm lifestyle choice, for the allround benefits, are those who also happen to be happiest on it, and consistently losing weight/or maintaining.
Doing 5:2 properly ie sticking to 500 or less on fd, and sticking roughly to tdee on nfd, without depriving yourself further, is the only way to sustain this.

The average rate of loss is 1lb-1.5lb per week. But that is affected by so many other factors! In your instance it will be fact that you've just had a baby!!

Average means that some weeks you will lose nothing, some weeks you may gain, some weeks you will lose a tiny bit, some weeks you will lose a fair bit.

Divided over a longer period of time, that loss would equate to approximately 1-1.5 lb per week, for the average person.

I think your mentality to this woe/wol may be what is causing you the misery. Just accept that it is early days for you. If you follow the 'rules' but be relaxed in your attitude towards it, and realise it will happen, but it will take time, YOU WILL GET THERE IN THE END!!

Stress is just going to hinder allsorts for you!

The first couple of months are probably the learning ones. Getting yourself into a proper rhythm. I can't tell you how much easier, happier, more successful I am now in achieving my fd than I was at the start. Everybody could say same about themselves too, I'm sure.

Ask for some advice on here and get yourself a proper plan of how and when you're going to do things inc weighing etc. But then listen to that advice! Xmas Grin

Thanks Thanks - don't give up on it. Unless you really do want to try something else. But I bet you won't find anything as easy and enjoyable as this.

Be really good for two days.
Be normal the other five.

Scales are still stubbornly stuck between 158 and 159lvs Hmm

But Grin I bought new workout clothes in Sweaty Betty yesterday and I had to get a size Small because Medium was far too big GrinGrin

Also calculated my BMI this morning. It's actually 21.83. GrinGrin Sooooooo close. Grin

Bssh. I take it we are still BMI twin ?Thanks

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 13/12/2013 10:07

Betsy!! Just seen your photo. OMG! You look amazing. Your waist so tiny.

Wow. Incredible. I strive to get my body like yours. ThanksEnvy

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 13/12/2013 10:11

Turkey that was a very timely post! I think I am focusing too much on wanting to lose weight as though it was WW or something. Maybe I need to throw out my scales or something!

Thinking ahead, my rough plan is to fast Mon and Wed next week, then sneak in some kind of fast on the Mon (23rd), even if it's just a Sun night- Mon night one.

MelanieCheeks · 13/12/2013 10:32

Today's our office chistmas lunch, so no counting! I'd ordered my Christmas jumper off Amazon, but it hasnt arrived in time....oh well, I'll get other opportunities to wear it over the next few weeks I'm sure!

Little NSV last night in bed as husband cuddled my waist and said "have you lost more weight?". The scales say no, but we all know they lie!!!!

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 10:33

Sweetiepie. Just had a look at your posts.

Don't underestimate the fluid retention from BFing. Both times I BFed I found it almost impossible to lose weight. It certainly wastnt the magic weightloss bullet everyone bangs on about. Quite the opposite.
And it had nothing to do with food intake. Once I stopped BFing I lost loads quickly and I was peeing constantly. It was ridiculous how much I went.

So water weight is an issue for some.

So don't feel like you're not losing. You are and it will be pure fat because you're retaining water due to BF hormones.

I know how it feels after having a baby. It's hard. Your body doesn't feel like yours. And it feels like others are using it (ie baby BFing).

I had GD and gained over 6 stone both pregnancies. Went from a slim person to a very fat/borderline obese person both times. It was very hard to deal. The first time was worst. I wasn't prepared for it. And all those stupid people who say you'll be back to normal by 6 week. Who the fuck are they!!!??? That's a fantasy.

And as for media/celeb mums. They firmly fall into two camps. The ones who are slammed for looking fat 2 years later and end up losing and doing a fitness dVD (Clare nazeer and now Chantelle)

And the other camp of those who gained virtually no weight and probably didn't quite gain enough. Poss due to morning sickness etc.

Your body does things during pregnancy and just after that you cannot predict or prepare for.

But you can get it back. Again look at Clare Nazeer and Kim Kardashian. Particularly Nazeer. She was very overweight and cellulity in those park workout pictures. And she was tiny and very toned after her diet and workout program. And she was over 40 at the time.

So if you're younger it will be much easier for you.

I'm 40 and have managed to shed most of the weight now bar a few last lbs and getting toned using Jillian Michaels workouts and swimming.

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 10:34

MrsF yes we're still BMI twins Grin. Remember weight loss is going to be very very slow (or negligible) at our BMIs! Don't fret too much my lovely :)

MrsFlorrick · 13/12/2013 10:38

Bssh. My BMI twin GrinGrin

Yes it's slow towards the very end. But I actually feel ok about it.

I am still working out and firming up so am still having a few nSV which helps the motivation.

And my disasterous November of DC chicken pox and DH away meant I ate too much and didn't work out. So no wonder there was a looooong lull on the loss front.

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 13/12/2013 10:42

Wow betsy Xmas Envy
