Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee Just try to chill and let your poor tum sort itself out. If you are very farty, take the opportunity for a long talk to an irritating teacher at your DC's school. In a closed room !

We all lose at different rates and crying just doesn't burn enough calories.

Remember this WOE is healthy for you and the weight loss will happen when your bod is ready.

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 12/12/2013 22:04

Weyhey bssh!

Mine has gone very well. Had a sneaky weigh and was ridiculously heavy, but not worried atm. Didnt have a start weight, so its nice to have a vague idea of what i weigh, even if its lots more than I thought.

Going out for tea with my bff tomorrow, then out on the piss, so quite far from a fast day Grin

Then my turn for a hangover FD on saturday

annie bovril and tabasco sounds gorgeous! Might be worth a try...

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 12/12/2013 22:08

Well done on the LOF, Bssh. Your weekend sounds yum fun.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 12/12/2013 22:15

EarSlaps The trick to pressups is to keep your abs tight, which keeps your whole body tight. You also need to practice at least twice, preferably 3 times per week.

Once you get to the stage of managing 10 pressups, rest and try a 2nd set.

At this beginner's stage, you'll get stronger very quickly and you should see some improved muscle definition.
Xmas Smile. Enjoy

EarSlaps · 12/12/2013 23:34

Quite, quite mad here, but wonderfully mad.

BigChoc- I've busted out three sets of 12 this evening, so feeling pretty proud of myself. Keeping the abs tight is fab, as concentrating on that makes me forget about how hard it is on my arms! The first 5 of each set actually felt quite easy. I'll be busting out 100 before I know it (if only).

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 12/12/2013 23:39

With the press up thing are you supposed to start with mini ones?

ChristmasPudding6 · 13/12/2013 01:07

Toffee hope u feel better v soon. I've been through something similar. Felt really blah and down and then it passes. It's harder to cope with FDs when u feel like that so don't be too hard on yourself. And most people who have had time off from fasting have reporting bigger losses when they get back into the swing of things a week or so later.

Earslaps v jealous of your mid section. But I can't really complain. I've only gotten as far as finding the 6W6P video on utube but haven't watched it let alone actually participated in the exercises. It's my goal to start soon (but not this week as too shattered).

MrsF I loved your summary re mini fasts and keeping a positive mental attitude. It's makes a big difference if you can think flexibly. I've 'failed' so many diets as I have always hit a point where I can no longer remain 'good' and I totally crash out and end up raiding the entire kitchen (and any other stashes such as wells in my basement). Then I feel like a real failure and never get restarted on the diet again, until several months later when I begin the latest fad. The good news is that 5:2 seems to be working! It's the longest period I've gone on a diet and finally feel like it really is my normal WOE. Despite my three month summer break.

And a few Vs I need to share with you all. New SV 10st 5. Whoop whoop.
NSV is that a pair of jeans I bought a year ago from a charity and stupidly didn't try on so didn't actually fit me, actually fit me now!!! Just a slight tightness around the largest section of my thigh, but since they are hipsters (so didn't realise that when they were hanging in the shop) they would fall down if they weren't tight somewhere!

And the strangest thing happened the other day. I mentioned to someone that my babies were rather large when they were born (9lb 9/ 9lb 7) and she said she couldn't believe because I was "so tiny". I've NEVER been described as so tiny in my entire adult life! It's amazing how differently others see you compared to how you see yourself. Felt really chuffed after that.

Anyway must leave you all in peace. I don't get to contribute that often but when I do, I can't stop gabbling. Sorry!!!!

sweetiepie1979 · 13/12/2013 01:20

Ach I'm thinking this diet is just not working for me. I lost nothing last week and this week I did one fast day and had a migraine today and spent most of it vomiting and at the loo while thinking ok this can be ny second fast day or at least it will be 3 this week then got on scales tonight and I've put on 2 pounds. Do you think I must be eating too much on nfd.
Can someone help please I really want this to work I've just been reading the inspirational stories thread and when you do the maths they were all losing almost 2.5 pounds a week!

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 04:35

sweetie when is your regular weigh in? If you weigh at night then you're also weighing a lot of water. Also, you've just had a baby: your body and hormones are still not "normal". Don't be so hard on yourself.

TheRaniOfYawn · 13/12/2013 05:47

Wide awake since 4.30 here too, although it's mostly due to a 4 year old bed thief.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 06:08

EarSlaps Well done indeed ! You're on the way now. Just keep practicing. Usually best to have at least one day rest, or working lower body instead, between sessions.
Xmas Grin Champion !

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 06:10

FakeToffeeSausage/Turkey
I was cold, so there ! [stamps foot]

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 06:15

Funny I never did a mini-pressup in my life. I just concentrated on keeping abs tight and kept trying until I could do one pressup, then built from there. However, we are all different. Whatever works for you.

Note: for pressups, you need strong abs as well as shoulders and arms. So, build those up first, if you can't manage pressups properly.

Baloostika · 13/12/2013 06:31

Sweetie I don't think weighing at night is correct cos ur all filled up with all the food and water you had all day.
Trying checking ur weight first thing in the morning as soon as u get out of the loo and weigh naked, it's my way, lol.

EarSlaps · 13/12/2013 06:35

Interesting about the abs BigChoc- I've been doing JM Six Week Six Pack so my core strength has improved massively. That seems to have made more difference to my ability to do push ups than back when I did more exercises with weights.

Funny- I always did knee push ups before whenever they were in a class or DVD. However many of those I managed I still found it hard to progress to full ones. I think you just have to keep trying until you can do one and build on it, just like our resident gym bunny says.

EarSlaps · 13/12/2013 06:44

Another morning weigher here. Sometimes I weigh in the evening out of interest, and I can be over 3lbs heavier full of extra water. Naked before you eat or drink and after a wee. Water weighs a lot, so a couple of cups of tea before weighing can make you 1-2lbs heavier.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 07:10

No wonder I felt crock last night ^^

That venison, duck, mulled wine piled on 3kg - most of which will be gone tomorrow, I know, but means tight jeans right now.
Oh well, FD today and no weekend Frenzy.

Last night, my bod kept saying "get inside you silly cow, you're freezing" and I misheard part of that as "get some more food inside".
Also, I don't like rich (posh ?) food at all; I never feel yuk the morning after a ChocFrenzy or several pizzas and chips. I'll just eat pleb food in future.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 13/12/2013 07:29

EarSlaps I weigh post-ablutions, pre-intake every morning. I also weigh most evenings before bed.
(I have done this for many years, as part of my exercise diary; I don't worry about it, it is just information)

I agree: evenings I am about 3lb heavier and 1-2 inch wider in the waist than in the morning. One day post-frenzy (or Xmas party) that difference is a lot more. Obviously, undigested food, plus water.

Note: if you weigh after training you'll also be weighing that litre of water you drank.

[our usual cultured chat on 5:2]

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 07:39

Sorry to disappear last night. My lap top battery ran out.

Thanks BigChoc. Still tummy achey this morning and why I weighed myself I don't know Hmm. I will probably not be able to resist weighing tomorrow after I have fasted today but then after that I will only do it once a week.

TheRealToffeeSAusage - surely I should fast today? I bought the kids sausage rolls and even the thought of one of those is not making me want to eat.

Have a day at Bluewater planned and just feel so tired. Wondering whether to cancel but running out of time to get everything done and I do want to see my friend.

BsshBossh · 13/12/2013 07:39

Weigh in Friday - just 0.2 lbs lost this week.

I measured myself again this morning and in the last 8 months I've lost 4 inches from my belly (measured around the navel - my fattest part), 3 inches off my hips and 3 inches from around my under-bust. I never measured myself when I was 210 lbs nearly 2 years ago. Wish I had cause those changes would have made incredible reading.

Oh and I'm now 21-something BMI.

Baloostika · 13/12/2013 07:49

I'm doing press up minis right now and working my way up to proper ones. I try to do the proper ones but I can't get very low, I'm trying.
I will try to tighten my Abdul next time just like BCF advised.
Who's fasting today?
My fast has dragged to 40 hrs though I ate something small at the 24 hrs mark.
Below 400 in 40hrs is still a good fast with all the health benefits Smile.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/12/2013 07:49

Brilliant BsshBossh, well done!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 13/12/2013 07:52
