Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hmm, what do you reckon the chances are that I've had too many cals on fruit and veg only? I feel full?

Think I'll go and work it out properly...

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 12/12/2013 18:00

Wow, I'm only on 400 cal!! Xmas Shock

TheRaniOfYawn · 12/12/2013 18:21

500 calories eaten today, so the kitchen is now closed until 10am tomorrow.

EarSlaps · 12/12/2013 18:23

Thanks Bssh. It's still got a bit more padding than I'd like, and the skin is a bit loose, but it's not bad for after two children. I'm hoping that keeping up with the exercise will help tone it all up a bit more. After seeing BigChoc's pics I really want to work on getting toned arms too! I'm working on my full push ups so that would help, I'm up to ten now (from nothing back in August). They're just so hard.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 12/12/2013 19:47

Thanks for info. Managed a semi healthy lunch but did my 23 hrs on 500 cals.

I thought the whole thing with this WOE was that you could eat whatever you wanted on NFDs. A lot of you seem to stick to TDEEs on other days. Does this mean I can't just scoff on NFDs?

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 19:58

FunnyFestive if you consistently overeat on NFDs you won't have the necessary calorie deficit needed for weight loss. Many of us, however, undereat our TDEEs (ie watch what we eat) on weekdays so we can scoff guilt-free on the weekends.

on the hints and tips thread is a link to a set of pictures of what 200 calories of different foods look like ... enlightening Smile

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/12/2013 20:04

Hello all

Yes, I was Miss Strawb.

I feel weird. Today was meant to be a fast but I knew I just wasn't in the right frame of mind and was going to find it hard. I waited a while and decided tomorrow would be better to fast as I will be out all day so easy to avoid food. I felt good that I a found a way around it.

However, I have had such bad tummy ache and wind all day. What is going on? I have still got tummy ache. Feel a bit low as I if I had a row with a friend when actually it was just me thinking casual plans were definites and I don't like change.

I need to understand how long a FD and a stuff your face day take to show on the scales as I think I might be weighing myself too much and then smiling when good or saying I don't like that when not.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/12/2013 20:06

I need to fast for a very long time. Eating three meals in one day is a shock as I haven't done it for so long.

TalkinPeace · 12/12/2013 20:09

(((( Toffee ))))
Take each day a sit comes
and yes, it may be best if you follow the advice I gave rubbishfamily t'other day.
Put the scales away till January.
Use a piece of clothing as your guide through Christmas.

TBH there is little enough of me that I can tell in the morning whether my supper is sitting in my upper digestive tract or lower IYSWIM
but I also know that a few cups of tea and no snacking can put it right.

Remember that "showing on the scales" is NOT the same as laying down fat cells over a period of months and years.
If you eat too much for a week you'll "put on" about half a stone"
If you eat "too little" for four weeks you'll "lose" that same half stone.
As its fluid and undigested food, not fat.

inamerrymuckingfuddle · 12/12/2013 20:35

grr posted loads ages ago but internet connection went weird

anyway, general gist - Turkey I'm so glad my mutterings helped someone!

Am in the midst of a right old week, with DTDs birthday on Sat, involving sleepover tomorrow night (what was I thinking????) visitors on Sun with some work and a hospital appointment to fit in too...
So today, NFD - have had 5 slices of toast, a burger (at home, not McD!) and now on red wine and nuts...I'm seeing tonight as my Friday since tomorrow I'll be looking after 9 9-10 yr old girls Xmas Shock think I'll need more Wine on Sat! Have just made them a minion cake which I am quite proud of.

toffee I don't know if you remember but I had similar bloating feeling a couple of weeks ago, it has since 'passed' Xmas Blush but not in aturkey way! I weigh in on the same day at the same time each week so I can have an idea of comparability - anything in between doesn't count!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/12/2013 21:01

I don't understand about the laying down business in terms of what I asked ConfusedBlush.

TMI

Sorry

I have definitely issues today. Even DS2 asked what the smell was when I had wind Blush and one visit to the loo was rather explosive.

I just feel a bit bleurgh emotionally today Confused. Really want to not eat for a very long time.

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 21:08

Big ((( Toffee ))). Sounds like a bug of some kind?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/12/2013 21:10

I feel okay in that I don't feel ill but who knows?

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 21:19

Sleep on it Toffee and see how you feel in the morning. Emotions can churn up my insides so it might be that. Anyway... try and get some rest. Tomorrow is a brand new day.

Oh, and as for weighing I only weigh once a week - the morning after my second weekly fast. So every Friday. I've had sneaky weigh ins before and sometimes can be as much as 8 or 9 lbs above my official weigh in figure so I have given up sneaky weigh ins!

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 21:21

Case in point. Last Thursday evening after a whole day of no food I was 135 lbs. Friday morning I was 129.8 lbs. It was obviously water etc but interesting. Glad I only weigh once a week.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 12/12/2013 21:41

Toffee if you saw any of my posts last weekend, amongst all the joking about and the ridicule I faced!!, I did say I thought I must've had a stealth bug. Because my insides went a bit funny, I did also have funny ears and funny head? but was mainly feeling very strange mood wise and also had my shart experience.

I think there is something going about. I didn't feel like it was a bug to begin with because it wasn't so obvious. But after a few days, when I started to feel fine again, I realised it must've been.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks Thanks

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/12/2013 21:41

I will stop the weighing as I used to weigh just once a week and that is better. I wanted to keep an eye in case I crept up as I did have weeks where I put on a few pounds and others where I stayed the same and three weeks with no loss was disheartening. I also think a week between weigh ins is a long time if I haven't lost.

Tomorrow I will attempt a fast but not panic too much if I still have tummy ache and can't face it.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 12/12/2013 21:42

ok bsssh thanks. I will pretend I didn't just eat a massive heap of crisps Blush

Toffee sorry to hear about your tum sounds really sore and unpleasant. Definitely better to avoid the scales although I totally understand the temptation. I am tempted to weigh every day at the minute.

Might do a mini fast tomorrow or Saturday to try and counteract the pig fest tonight.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 12/12/2013 21:44

I have had cotton wool head for a while and have been very clumsy. I tripped over a box today when rushing about. Hurt my toe and in an attempt to save myself I smacked my hand into the wall. I pretty much cried Blush.

annielewis · 12/12/2013 21:44

Hi all, checking in as it's been a busy few days! Ended up getting seriously drunk last night, was meant to be a civilised dinner and deteriorated pretty fast! ??

I'm doing another 36 hr fast, kitchen closed, roll on Saturday breakfast!! Actually looking forward to it as have eaten and drunk way too much in the last 48 hrs! Will just do bovril/ Tabasco and tea/ herbal and coffee.

Well done everyone on even still being here over Christmas, I actually think that's a massive NSV, I know personally I've usually given up on any 'diet' by this fine of year only to feel awful come January! I love this for its flexibility and the fact it's almost impossible to 'fail'.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 12/12/2013 21:51

Ugh, ate far too much at the Xmas party. it was very rich venison, duck, wine sauce etc washed down with mulled wine. Oversweet choc mousse and cinammon afterwards. My tum is used to pleb fare. I would have loved fish, chips, mushy peas and rice pud, but I was outvoted on the menu.

We were outdoors mostly, so I froze my ears, nose and bum cheeks. One of these places must be where I keep my stomach capacity dial, because that dial froze too and I didn't realise I was massively over capacity. Currently breathing carefully so I don't barf it all back. TMI.
Xmas Sad. ^

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 21:52

How have all the Thursday fasters done today? Mine's been a success. Haven't eaten all day and am soon going to bed so I may be able to claim a 36-hr LOF. Will confirm tomorrow morning.

DH has tomorrow off work so we'll be eating lunch out together. We're going to a BBQ place so lots of delicious meat will be consumed. I tell you, the thought of lunching there has kept me going all day today. Then Saturday is yet another birthday lunch. Sunday is cinema day with DD which means lots of popcorn. I love food!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 12/12/2013 21:52
