Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Good motivation Turkey :o

Morning all. Fast day for me today and it's the leftover lentil, veggie shepherds pie for my tea Smile
DH just phoned to say he won't be home from a meeting till midnight so I'm actually going to have to leave half of it in the dish. That'll be a challenge! Actually best thing to do (as it's already left overs and can't be left any longer) would be to dish up my half and promptly bin the rest / feed it to the dog to stop me going back for seconds.....

Anyone seen itsaboatjack or swallowedafly around these parts recently? Or are they over on the Maintainers thread?

After my 10st 8lbs panic moment last week I seem to have settled back to 10st 4lbs again. I blame it on last week's visit from Aunt Flo Smile

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 11:05

Dotty can you freeze the other half of the pie? Or feed it to the DC (or dog)? Seems like such a waste of lovely food to bin it.

Baloostika in ten months of doing 5:2 I've done less than five 36-hr LOFs. But all my FDs since the beginning have been 22-24-hr LOFs; I've never eaten breakfast or lunch on a FD (only because I found it easy, right from the start, which is why this WOE suits me).

FD going fine so far. Went for a very long brisk powerwalk and am now working. Soup and fruit planned for dinner tonight if I decide I won't make a 36-hr LOF.

somewherebecomingrain · 12/12/2013 11:20

I've missed some GOLDEN stuff I see.

bigchoc v interesting about the scientific establishment. My dad was a nutrition expert and he gets apoplectic/plymotric(?) when I talk about gi, insulin, sugar vs fat. Having said that he doesn't eat virtually any sugar and has huge tombstones of butter on his bread and is in great health at 79.

feativetable my gut tells me 5:2 is not bad for TTC - only being underweight. 5:2 made my milk production better. It makes everything work better.

I was about to say I don't think you could do it in pg but I bet you could if you were sensible. Women must have done it in our hunter gatherer days. We do it now when we have morning sickness and the babies are fine. It's easy in our society to ensure we get the nutrients. I actually ate less throughout my last pg on some days because I was so impatient to start 5:2 and because of the simple idea that it was ok to eat less sometimes, more other times, and because of my acid reflux. The result was that after the birth I was a stone lighter than before I conceived.

Gentle variation in your calorie intake day to day during PG, not pushing yourself and listening to your body - can't see why not. 1000 seems a bit low though. I think you'd need to be led by your body rather than a figure plucked out of the air.

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 12:40

The FD chills are settling into my bones again...

PoshPaula · 12/12/2013 12:48

The FD low point is here for me... I get a couple of these around lunch and dinner time.

Dotty342kids · 12/12/2013 12:57

Agree it's a waste to bin stuff BssBossh but DCs were not mad keen on it the first time around, let alone the second! Don't think it'd freeze well but no harm in trying I guess Smile

I'm cold too but am about to hoover downstairs, that'll warm me up and keep me busy!
C'mon Paula, you can get through this! Have another cuppa / run up and down the stairs a few times and it'll soon pass.

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 13:00

Keep going Posh. Can you nip out for a walk. It's "lunch time" now so that's exactly what I'm going to do now: go out for another walk.

Not2bObvious · 12/12/2013 13:08

Fast day here too, just broke a 16 hour fast with a salmon salad...and 2 biccies Xmas Blush But it's all good, I'll be sub 600 cals. Putting my head down to work, keeping busy is the only way for me.
All this talk of chocolate shortage is making me glance nervously at my tins, should I start weaning myself off it??? To be fair I probably wouldn't need 5:2 for weight loss/control if it weren't for my choc/crisp/wine habit. Degenerate, that's what I am! Best of luck fellow fd'ers

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 12/12/2013 13:38

afternoon all.
6-6.5 hours to go to my yummy MFD dinner.
dh did make his Xmas party (first time since dd was born as she normally gives him d&v just in time) so I had a nice meal, ice cream then a bath with some posh bubbles. decided that required some Wine bubbles too so have had an extra drinking day for the second week in a row. am definitely finding lof until dinner is detoxing me.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 12/12/2013 13:43

I intended to continue yesterday‘s FD through until the Xmas party tonight, but my system had a nasty shock early this morning:
A car towing a big trailer smashed some water pipes, so no water in our road.
I managed to run a small bath of freezing cold water. Brrr!

I lasted until lunch, then warmed up my tum with a huge beef curry and chips from the canteen (I‘m so sophisticated) plus a bowl of assorted veg and a big rice pud.
I must still look dangerous, because my boss just handed me a large choc muffin a supplier gave him. He didn‘t dare eat it in my vicinity.
Xmas Smile

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 12/12/2013 13:50

Rani, I‘m drooling over your supper last night – chorizo, fried onions & peppers, mm. Better with chips than salad, though
Xmas Smile

^^
[Dangerous lurky BigChoc]

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 12/12/2013 13:54

Blimey, somewhere. Are you sure you are not feeding a BigChoclet ?
That‘d make any mum Frenzy.

MrsF: Feel free to have drunken rambles here. Why should you be different to most of the thread. In particular, that sharty avian is a real sot.
Xmas Smile

^^

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 12/12/2013 14:00

Turkey You are sounding far too virtuous with all this "I can't pig out any more" stuff.
Hmm
Reassure me that the real Turkey will hiccup back, licking her chocolatey fingers.

Of course, if you've taken the NICE pledge (No Irritating Chocolate Ever), I can dispose of that pesky choc hoard in Turkeyland...
{fsmile]

EarSlaps · 12/12/2013 14:57

Rani- I want your salad, sounds fab! The workout looks good too. It seems quite similar to the seven minute workout (which it is recommended you do 2 or 3 times a day, so 15-20 minutes or so).

I've put a new pic up in my workout gear. This is most of the way through six week six pack (I was going to wait until I've finished but that might clash with the Christmas bloat Grin). I tried to put a party dress pic on too but it is being very strange.

PoshPaula · 12/12/2013 15:02

Thanks Ladies I'm pushing through - haven't caved in!

TheRaniOfYawn · 12/12/2013 15:08

Just back from the school nativity play. The children were all utterly adorable. A nice hot cup of tea is calling to me now. ..

MrsFlorrick · 12/12/2013 15:17

Yikes. Bad hangover. Ouch. DC at school and preschool so went Xmas shopping. Not good.

Bigchoc. I tried one of those Atkins shake things for my FD. Yuk. I binned it and ate 650 cals worth of tuna sashimi at yo sushi instead.

So that's over my FD cals allowance. I am toying with the idea of fasting through tonight (no dinner) and until tomorrow evening.

Lets see if I manage that one.

Need to go and check my choc stash is safe from Bigchoc. Back later Wink

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 16:00

EarSlaps your tummy looks fab!

Baloostika · 12/12/2013 16:34

Thank u for the info Bssh cos I was going to get all obsessive wit doing two 36hrs LOF each week, I can but I don't think it's necessary cos all I want is to lose weight and I can eating my 500 on most fast days.
I just had a milky coffee after 24hrs, I've had only water and a black coffee all day.
Yay! [Grin] for going zero calls for 24hrs.
Still thinking about going thru wit my 36hrs cos am starving here, maybe I'll have another milky coffee and close at 100 for the day.
Sorry folks the post is all about me.
How are all the Thursday fosters doing this evening? itsaboat it's true you have been missing around here.

TalkinPeace · 12/12/2013 16:43

Funnyfestive
TTC / 5:2 - I cannot remember where the thread was but several people piled in to say that they got pregnant while fasting - if nothing else because they were looking after themselves so much more

Telling people at the gym I'm fasting
Yup, and lots of people at my gym are (particularly ladies of a certain age)
One of the trainers told me it was rubbish and that I'd fail.
I reminded him last week that my BMI has been stable for a year now.
He grinned.

bssh
going to do a version of shakshouka tonight for supper : I'd always assumed it was a mexican dish (that being where tomatoes and peppers come from of course)

TheRaniOfYawn · 12/12/2013 16:57

I'm tired after a bad night's sleep so am chewing gum instead of eating.

I am about to start cooking dinner (beanburger and a big salad). I counted up the calories of that and the bouillon and it comes to exactly 499! I'll probably end up sharing the salad with the rest of the family.

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 17:06

I bet itsaboat is very busy at this time of year running her pub. saf are you lurking here? How are you?

TiP enjoy your meal. Goodness it's so delicious I could eat it all the time.

Baloostika you can definitely lose weight on 500 calorie FDs. No need to do LOFs :) I do LOFs for health benefits.

Dotty342kids · 12/12/2013 17:28

oh yes, good point about itsaboat actually. Had forgotten that!
MissStrawberry has also disappeared......

Oh, hunger is well and truly kicking in now. One hour to go, one hour to go.... then will have done 20hrs Smile

BsshBossh · 12/12/2013 17:40

Isn't MissStrawberry Toffeesausage?
