Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Getting a second wave of hunger here. Had two glasses of water and going to do some cleaning. Going to try and save my soup till 4pmish.

It's weird how everything comes in waves. This is my second 'wave' of feeling a bit dizzy / hungry / light-headed. First wave at about 1pm but it went away after ten mins and I felt really clear-headed, energetic and alert. Hoping the same thing happens this time!

Emmabryant123 · 10/12/2013 15:36

Hungry, hungry, hungry. Can't wait to have my porridge this evening about six ish.
Nice knowing I don't have to prepare food for tomorrow at work but can eat dinner as normal at night tomorrow.
Will struggle though as will be hungry at 7am but can't do nothing if no food and will survive.
Then Thursday normal eating!

BetsyJingleBells · 10/12/2013 16:29

emmabryant Porridge makes me hungrier than if I have nothing… You'd be better off eating a big tub of soup this evening - way more filling and more nutritious too. Protein and veg is the way to go - more bang for your 500 calorie buck.

Turkey I am going to assume that the jist of your post means I can wait till January before I check in for a bigchoc style bootcamp. Sounds good to me Grin. Only 8 and a bit days before holidays begin!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 16:32

Sorry, another question.

Second fast day this week planned for Thurs but friend just confirmed a lunch arrangement I had forgotten I'd made Blush I have a lunch tomorrow for work. I was thinking I could start fasting after it and finish at lunchtime on Thurs, just in time to have lunch with friend. Would that work? Does that 'count' as a fast?

Dotty342kids · 10/12/2013 16:37

So, just made me and the kids a veggie / lentil shepherds pie for dinner tonight. There was a load of the mix left over, checked cals and a portion comes in at 530 cals. As the portions are very large, I was therefore able to make a second one for FD dinner on Thurs, meaning I don't need to go near the kitchen all day, until teatime - hurrah Grin

Funny, that sounds fine, as long as that lunch comes in at 500 cals or less! And then nothing again till Fri breakfast.

Southeastdweller · 10/12/2013 16:51

emma Why don't you try miso soups? Low-cal and almost feels like you've eaten.

Dotty I'd love to try that recipe. Sorry to hear about your work situation for next year, btw.

BetsyJingleBells · 10/12/2013 17:07

Funny It would be a fast - a bit shorter than they usually work out but a fast none the less. Go for it! See how nice and flexible this WOE is? :)

BetsyJingleBells · 10/12/2013 17:12

Dotty I don't think Funny needs to wait until Friday breakfast as she'll have a good long head start the day before - effectively 24 hours with nothing, but normal meals either side. I think I would go for a normal lunch each side and a light supper on the Thursday. If you think you can manage without supper on the Thursday then that would be an excellent fast!

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 17:24

Thanks Betsy I think that's what I'll have to do. This time of year is a bloody nightmare for going out / eating out. Still, at least if I am fasting around it I hopefully won't gain too much - might even lose!

Had my soup at 5pm - 76 cals. Still under 100 cals. DH is having a ready meal for one - feel bad but just wanted to get started today before I put things off for another week. I'm going to try and hold fire until as late as possible, then have a sandwich with plenty of leftover meat and maybe another soup. My 24 hours will officially end at 9pm so if I can get to that time won't worry too much if I have 600-700 cals instead of 400.

MrsFlorrick · 10/12/2013 18:10

Turkey. You're very funny! How are your rear nether regions?? I hope you're better.

TIP sound advice. As always. Smile

Bit of an unintended blowout today. I baked 100 cinnamon snails! Some for PTA to sell with tea/coffee after the DC nativity play tomorrow (both my DC are in it and DD has a lead role-proud!). And some for neighbours. I hand them out naicely wrapped in cellophane with fabric ribbon and their Xmas card. Our older neighbours love them and are delighted. The younger ones thank me politely. Not sure if they like them tho. But the DC love helping with baking and handing them out.

So I had to test the various batches Grin. I tested about 1200 cals worth of snails!Shock Yikes. I didn't realise this until I'd had dinner just now. I would have skipped dinner if I had realised.

Think I need my ears slapped.

BetsyJingleBells · 10/12/2013 18:21

I'm full. I just want to announce that here as I've started mentally foraging.

Since I typed that, DS1 showed me a gruesome scab and I've gone right off the idea of nibbling!

100 cinnamon snails! I wish I was your neighbour MrsF! Perhaps they ones who were less than delighted are all fasting today Grin

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 18:25

MrsF loving the sound of some cinnamon snails. I'm impressed you kept any for the neighbours tbh!

DH and DC have eaten. I am having a cup of tea. I may have licked the mash spoon from the cottage pie. It was probably 8 million calories.

Emmabryant123 · 10/12/2013 18:37

Just had ribs, mash, broccoli and carrots for dinner. Making me 1200 calories today boy it was hard!
Going to skip breakfast tomorrow but taking lunch to work and having dinner and see how I feel.
Then for 500 cal I may be able to have a tin of soup at work and a dinner at home and manage a fast,

Not2bObvious · 10/12/2013 18:52

Disastrous FD yesterday, made the huge mistake of eating an apple to break my fast about 12. Oh my, never again, I also had a couple of mandarins with my lunchtime soup. In all the time I've been fasting (nigh on 7 months) have I felt as hungry. It did not pass, I had a knawing sensation from about 3 until I ate at 6 and after that I just caved Sad
No matter, am planning the next 2 days as mini fast and proper 500 cal fast. Going to take myself off once I've closed the kitchen to catch up on all your news. I've 2 pages to goGrin That'll get me back on track!

MrsFlorrick · 10/12/2013 18:58

Betsy and Funny. Grin

I've eaten too much. 800 cal dinner (junk food consisting on Waitrose Party food - Heston mini chicken pies, mini coquille en jacques and some chilli beef something or other).
And 1200 cals of cinnamon snails. Ugh.
That's 2000 cals folk and I only had dinner and a snack Wink

Did my JM workout which is a small redemption on the greed fest. Blush

DC are screaming be back later.

MrsFlorrick · 10/12/2013 18:59

Didn't make clear that I didn't have breakfast or lunch (lunch was cinnamon snails...).

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 10/12/2013 19:02

Thanks BigChoc.

Well done Turkey!

Last week I moved my FD from Mon and Wed to Mon and Thursday as I wasn't losing anything and then I did. Does anyone find it does make a difference how many days between fasts = weight lost/gained/plateau?

Emmabryant123 · 10/12/2013 19:27

Right made lunch for tomorrow but have given into dh instead as I did not starve today for nothing.
It didn't even pass- just got worse and worse and I felt more and more energy less and a pain In tummy as I went on.
So I'm taking a tin of soup to work tomorrow for lunch tomorrow if I really need it. Also not to fussed about 500 cals anywhere between 500-800 will be a success tomorrow :)

Baloostika · 10/12/2013 19:28

Has anyone tried Bachelor's Slim a Soup? Am thinking about breaking one of my fasts with it one of these days. It's 66 calls or so per packet.
Anyone?
Am craving bread and white tea tonight...

whimsicalname · 10/12/2013 19:30

We've had 2 consecutive snow days here, plus 3 sick kiddos (and I'm not feeling my best) so fasting has been knocked on the head for this week. Nevertheless, I weighed in at 133lbs on Monday, which is my target weight (9.5st). Hurray! Inevitably, I feel like I could do a bit more, but I'll try to maintain for now. I just thought I'd pop in and put up a new pic of one of my new party frocks. Unfortunately the picture was taken after the party by my husband. I can't find one that shows me when I was bigger, although presumably they exist somewhere. If I do, I'll put one of them up too.

Well done other losers, keep at it fasters, and i'll be back on a fd next Monday I expect (2 more Christmas do s over the weekend!)

Baloostika · 10/12/2013 19:34

Tip, your advise is obviously point as always.
Hey Bssh, BCF, Betsy, Annie, Toffee, Maria, Eat, Turkey, Emma, MrsF, Not2, Funny, Dotty, South and all my pals on here.
Am trying to master all the names and remember u all, lol sorry if I didn't get ur name. I love u guys, u have changed my life, made me a better person.

Dotty342kids · 10/12/2013 19:39

Thanks southeastdweller, hope all is good with you! This is the shepherds pie recipe

Dotty342kids · 10/12/2013 19:39

I used puy lentils rather than green lentils. If you like mushrooms (we don't) you could add those too. It was delish!
