Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Although thinking about it, if I'm doing ADF, a few more calories on FDs wont hurt

Southeastdweller · 10/12/2013 08:26

Checking in as I'm fasting today.

head I can testify to the pleasures of the Peanut Hottie drink - it makes a nice change from Options on a cold night at home. By the way, you're looking seriously fabulous in that profile pic!

emma I think some exercise would help with the jet lag and food cravings.

Good luck to everyone else who's fasting.

MrsFlorrick · 10/12/2013 08:33

Turkey. No bug. Def. overload of kale chips (so yummy). It stopped quite quickly. I've overdone kale before and it's known for this particularly delightful side effect.

Sadly it didn't help me lose weight though. Still the same this morning. I've spent 6 weeks now bouncing between 160lbs and 158lbs. Argh.

Bigchocfrenzy. Grin. You're very funny.

Welcome to all the new folk here. You're all in the right place. We have a fab time on this thread and everybody's lovely.

Bssh. Flowers you're amazing. I read your posts from the last few days. You've been through a lot.

Back to my day. The school run beckons. Need to avoid the PTA this morning. They are looking for victims for something or other. They are quite a scary bunch. I went to a few if their meetings and wasn't impressed. Not sure they are very nice actually. It all came to a head for me when two of them came to blows (literally) during a meeting on school premises during school hours. The DC could have seen. It's a prep with a nusery so DC as young as 2 could have seen brawling parents. I stepped away after that and now avoid them.

This phone is so annoying, I can't get to the bottom of the messages to catch up ConfusedConfused but I thought I would pop back to say yay finally a loss! I'm 10.1 this morning so finally lost 1pound! If I could loose 2lbs before Christmas I would have hit my goal of 9 something before Christmas Grin

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 10/12/2013 09:33

BigChocolateReindeer .... It's special Food Replacement Choc so think you'll find doesn't actually count! (haughty face)

NND is still in force rest of time. Well, I say in force..... what I actually mean is I have changed my list of 'naughties'.

Wine is still off.
All crisps/savoury snacks gone.
All biscuits gone.
Seem to be eating one meal day.
Portion sizes are right down.
Carbs are very low.

In fact apart from the odd cake/pastry/bit of choc, I am being very good.

December was always going to be different. January however will be different matter!!

Think I will keep it simple and just take a fd hols for Christmas. Take 2 weeks off, during which will try to keep an element of mindfulness. Fortunately for me this will hit at my greedier tom as well, so I will prob have to be rolled into January!

If only there was somebody who would take great delight in watching the bloated, windy withdrawal and could maybe give me/us a big kick up the arse in Jan??......

BC BootCamp Xmas Grin

Nah! You'd hate that wouldn't you. Swinging from your rafters, occasionally landing on the shoulders of a Thor, to strangle him with your bare thighs - just for fun. Sneering at the weak willed! (yeah that's you Betsy - if I'm going down, you're coming too!) Xmas Grin

Morning all. Successful fast day yesterday when had lovely chicken, chickpea and spinach curry which had been going all day in the slow cooker and torturing me with its lovely smells! And then had two Mr Kipling fruit slices before bed. AARGH!

Anyway, still a pretty good FD so not going to beat myself up over that one and weigh in this morning looked much healthier than last week. Got another fast day to go this Thursday, meals for week all planned so feeling good Smile

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 10/12/2013 09:53

Oh and anything but a stealth boast....

Just done an illegal early weekly weigh in, and after my modest weekend and fd yesterday am down another pound Xmas Grin

So that is 11.5!!!!!!!

This is lightest I think I've ever got to since becoming overweight, and then only once!!

Everything from this point onwards is what will really count for me.

If I could just manage another 6 between now and 24th I'll have hit my Xmas goal of the tens Xmas Grin

Ok, maybe not! Xmas Wink

Especially with all that heavy muscle building exercise I'm doing!

(Looks out window for hoop delivery van whilst squatting )

Just need to maintain it now.

TheRaniOfYawn · 10/12/2013 10:10

Not a fast day today, so I had a MN inspired egg in a cup for breakfast. I am off to do some exercises now. Today is bodyweight circuits day.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 10/12/2013 10:16

shart is my favourite word, followed closely by pants. I think me and bigchoc may have the same mental age Wink

hope everyone has so far avoided any shafting so far today.

the annual advent games have begun here. dd isnt yet 3 but has taken dh out with illness before his last 2 Xmas parties. this years is tomorrow and dd is really not well. we fear its too late for dh.

good luck today's fasters.

I managed to maintain so far despite a night out and only mini fasting yesterday. guessing mini fasting is the way to go for me.

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 10/12/2013 10:17

ummm sharting. maybe keep shafting to yourselves Shock Blush Grin

Emmabryant123 · 10/12/2013 10:40

Ahh everyone eating cakes, crisps, biscuits at work :(
Had my porridge this morning but still as hungry as I would of been at this time-
Just 7.5 hours till I can have another bowl with banana and Nutella though. Nicely under 1000 calories then today. Then nothing till my meal tomorrow night but not calorie counting and may have rice pud for dessert tomorrow. (Doing a lo till 6pm tomorrow to get back into proper 5:2)
Keep saying to my self a cake will only fill me up for 30 mins anyway and then I'll feel crap again in eating it so what's the point.
Takeaway at work next Thursday for last day before Xmas going to have chicken burger, cheese on chips and baked beans mmm. So will fast Monday and Wednesday next week.

annielewis · 10/12/2013 10:46

Morning all

turkey and BCF you are too funny! Like a double act.. keep it up, and well done on your sneaky scale victory turkey (maybe a silver lining to the shart episode- you sharted a pound??)

So, I managed a liquid only 36 hour fast - ate tea on Sunday and then only coffee tea bovril and water til breakfast this morning. And it felt fine!! Like others have said I actually found this a bit easier than trying to think about what I could have for sub 500 dinner etc. Total calories on everything was about 120.

Am thinking I might do another one on Friday as it was going to be a fast day anyway.

Good luck to everyone doing FD today, glad I'm not as its brass monkeys here - about 3 degrees this morning according to the car thermometer thingy...

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 11:35

Fast day here. So cross that I had a sweet pig out last night until 9pm so my FD won't end until 9pm (stupid me). Why I picked last night I will never know Hmm

Thanks BigChoc that's really helpful. I might try some of those Atkins RTD ones rather than buy a big tub of some disgusting protein shake :o

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 11:36

PS: I am really at war with myself here. Keep thinking 'It's too close to Christmas to start, this is crazy!' But if I don't do it now, I'll just end up putting it off to January, by which time I'll be another half stone heavier :(

Talkinpeace · 10/12/2013 11:45

FunnyFestive
Start now.
For the very simple reason that if you've done a couple of fasts before Christmas you'll have started to teach your body that hunger is not scary and that having an empty tummy can be rather nice.
Which over Christmas will allow your brain to say "no" to the extra bit that will make you feel ill.
Also you'll save a fortune because shutting the kitchen between meals (other than on the specific feast fays) reduces the amount of food you get through by a huge amount.
Also, when you restart fasting in the New Year your system will go "ok, I recognise this"
and you will succeed.

postmanpatsreindeer · 10/12/2013 12:38

Well done turkey and rubbish on your losses, stealthy or otherwise it's still a loss!

annie I'm a day behind you this week (easiest as DP is out tonight). Glad your FD went well.

I'm on my third cup of peppermint tea and spending a lot of time in the loo - I don't think I drink more on a LOF than a NFD but my bladder certainly gives that impression!

funny absolutely agree with tip (which I usually do although I refuse to engage with the 'no snacking' rule Xmas Grin ) just get started right away. I started on a Thursday, the 'diet starts on Monday' rule does not apply to 5:2 because it's not a diet.

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 10/12/2013 12:51

Message received TIP and Postman thanks.

One Americano so far. Put a bit of milk in but no sugar. I feel virtuous Grin

Starting to get hungry so will have some soup if necessary this afternoon.

PoshPaula · 10/12/2013 13:16

I had a brilliant fast yesterday and today I have lost weight!!! Feeling very encouraged.

Baloostika · 10/12/2013 13:28

Ended my 38 hrs LOF (intended to do a 36 hrs when I started) it was a sub-108 which was d added milk in my coffee and tea and one cube of sugar.
Had an NSV today when a student said to me that I looked like i had lost weigh and that i look very nicet, I smiled... lol. I love the way I feel after my LOFs, I feel sexy, flat tummy and all.
I do two 36-40hrs LOF every week, is that too much? Some days it's a struggle and I've decided to do 24hrs if I feel woozy on FDs that way I'll make it a 4:3 that week.
All those feeling poorly i pray u feel better soon and wishing all fasters the best of the day.

BsshBossh · 10/12/2013 13:29

Woohoo for losses Posh, Turkey and rubbish!

I am proud and relieved to announce that I completed my first proper free weights session at the gym today after more than a month. My big goal for when I reached maintenance was a recomposition of my body (building muscle by increasing weights workouts) and now I can see I might be able to start focusing on that again. Phew.

Talkinpeace · 10/12/2013 13:32

Baloostika
2 big fasts a week is fine IF you are keeping your protein, calcium and fruit and veg up in between to keep your bones strong as you shrink

Emmabryant123 · 10/12/2013 13:37

Wow people 38 hour liquid fasts wow! I had porridge with banana at 6am and am starving now. Oh we'll only 4.5-5 hours till I can have some more porridge. I have decided to have it with banana and two tablespoons Nutella which will make me about 947 Calories. But 1200 will be a success today- always another day.
So tempting to have a cake now, on lunch bread. But coffee will have to do.
Tomorrow no food until dinner allthough i want worry about calories at dinner .I felt fine till 10:00am this morning then felt a tummy rumble. Normally I'd feel the first rumble at 7:00am. How will I cope?:(
Really want to adapt to this woe.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 10/12/2013 13:40

The Silver (or copper/nickel/zinc as would be case) Lining AnnieL would be if I really could shart actual pounds!

mega phone out again....

Forget money on trees!

Grab your buckets people!

I am sharting pounds!!! kerching kerching kerching Xmas Shock Xmas Shock Xmas Grin

It really was only a little shart.

Shart-Lite....so I'm not entirely convinced it was connected to weight loss.

Genuine lack of appetite. I really think my appetite has reset itself. Even when I can have anything I want, I am not that bothered! And I love food. Still fancy things, just less of and less often.

FunnyFestive I agree with all. Don't procrastinate just get started. Otherwise you will end up waiting for conditions to be just right before attacking any of it. It's like having kids - there is no perfect time! But unlike having kids you won't lose your mind, freedom, privacy, bladder control will shrink rather than expand! Get a head start in, you won't regret it and can get some of the early learning in .... um...early!

EmmaB Just remember this is the difficult part, but after couple of hard days telling your body to shut up you will find it soooo much easier again. Congrats on your lack of gain, despite eating that list of food!!

EatRisky What is shafting??.... I vaguely remember something.... years ago.....what...was..it?????

Hah!! If BigChoc and I were double act..... what would we call ourselves....[evil scheming face]

I'd really question whether porridge is a good food for fast days as its very carb heavy
protein (eggs, fish) or vegetables (steamed, stir fry, in soup) fill you up for longer and generally better ....
