Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

24 hr LOF complete. About to tuck into a sub-300 cal bowl of shakshouka Grin.

DH's birthday tomorrow and there will be venison ragu with linguine, wine and black forest gateau for dinner. Yes, it's a NFD but I will skip a meal nonetheless.

Papayasoup · 09/12/2013 21:33

Very tough FD, one of my hardest is months but I just about made it. It was all my own doing having eaten too much and a few too many Wine at a Christmas party on Sunday. I had a horrible sleep as a result and a poorly DD who kept waking up. I woke up with a headache and a rummbly tummy which lasted all day. Not helped by being a horrible grump. I felt sorry for my colleagues!
I had a bit more for dinner than planned but reckon still ended the day sub-700 so I'll call it a success especially as I'd dragged myself to the gym at lunch.

For those of you starting out I really found planning was key at the beginning and actually still is. I needed to know exactly what I was going to eat and when to get me through the hunger pangs. Lots of drinks as well. I also really eased into it as even though not a natural breakfast eater I had slipped into eating breakfast over the last year, which for me has always results in a gradual weight gain. For my first few fasts I had an egg or yoghurt for breakfast, salad or soup for lunch with some protein and a light dinner like 100g steamed fish and a massive pile of veg with lots of herbs, spices. I'd plan it all out on MFP the day before. Over time I pushed back my breakfast and then cut it out completely but I still eat twice a day most days. I've always relied on soups and eggs to get me through the days. And planning for the next day!

My danger zone is about 8pm after DD is in bed and I need to start getting my dinner ready. I am usually starving and if I don't have something ready in minutes then I can easily snarf a few crackers, baby bel etc while waiting. So eggs are perfect for a quick fix. Monday and Wednesday are my usual days as not only to counterbalance the weekend excess but I'm usually home on my own on Monday so I don't need to think about what DH wants to eat.

Yesterday was different as he was home but I had leftover broccoli salad although not super low cal as had bacon and dressing but not a huge portion but then finished off the pasta I'd made for him Xmas Hmm. Nevermind, it is morning here already although I got woken up way too early and I'm already looking forward to a tasty lunch of mixed veg salad from a salad bar place near work.

Well done to everyone having made it despite feeling poorly, blue, new etc

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 09/12/2013 21:45

Hi to all fellow FDers. i've had 450 cals since Sunday teatime and kitchen is closed. I'm planning my breakfast tomorrow: sprouted bread with caviar paste, veg juice, small rice pud (!). I'm not that hungry really and - I can have it tomorrow !
Xmas Grin
I'm just back from a fasted spin at the gym. Both during and afterwards, I experienced such a marvellous feeling of well-being and strength.
I've noticed this before ; LFDs with low carb shakes plus fasted training really seems to suit me - I don't know if others think who've tried the shake route have found the same.
Hmm
I much prefer this to solid FDs. To get the health reasons, I plan to schedule zero-cal LFDs on my training rest day, but only every 2nd week, due to my biweekly FD schedule.

My LFD routine is a low carb shake for lunch and then a post-training one, which my whole body just seem to soak up with gratitude. If I feel the need mid-morning say, I also have one cocoa total.

All my FDs run from teatime or supper on the previous NFD to either breakfast or lunch the next NFD, so 32-44 hrs. I don't have problems keeping within 500 cals for this period. What schedule is anyone else using ?
Hmm

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 09/12/2013 21:47

Oops, typo. I plan zero-cal LFDs for health benefits

BsshBossh · 09/12/2013 21:51

BigChoc my fasting schedule is always:
Sunday (eg) NFD: Stop eating by 9pm
Monday FD: Eat up to 500 cals at 9pm (usually it's around 200 cals tops)
Tuesday NFD: Breakfast around 10am

Repeat for Thursday FD.

So zero cal liquids (no shakes, just herb tea, water, black coffee) for 24 hrs then sub-200 cal single meal.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 09/12/2013 21:52

For anyone struggling with temptations on FDs, I personally find LFDs easier, because I know I can only have those 2 shakes, plus zero cal drinks and one optional cocoa. So, I'm not considering what I should eat, or do I want more. I only have those 2 shakes in my bags for work / gym.

I think the danger or temptation arises if one is "foraging", because that can turn into "grazing".

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 09/12/2013 21:56

Cuckoo Sorry to hear about your "sharting" , but thank you so much for this new word. i love new words for indelicate bodily functions ^

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 09/12/2013 22:00

Thanks Bssh I think I will try the calendar thing. Normally Monday and Wednesday would be good days for me although not this week. So might go for Tues and Thurs. Have eggs in and will leave some veg soup out of the freezer to get me through.

BigChoc what shakes do you use?

Breadandwine · 09/12/2013 22:07

25 hours into my LOF, ATM!

And that's how I do it - by counting down the hours.

I prepare by finishing dinner prior to fasting as early as possible. Last night I finished my last mouthful at 7.00pm - so, by midnight I already had 5 hours in the bag. When I woke at 9, it was up to 14 - so I think to myself, 'I've got a headstart on this!"

I've also on occasion looked at the time left - so, with a 36 hour fast, by 1pm I've done 18 hours with 18 to go. Then each hour - if I'm not busy - I can look at the clock and tell myself - 19 down, 17 to go. Another way i mark the time is to tell myself, after 24 hours, that I'm 2/3rds of the way.

I appreciate this is not for everyone - it'll probably drive half of you up the wall - but for me, it works. Especially so in the early days.

It's 9pm now, so 26 down, only 10 to go. And I'm still to feel any hunger!

It's 10pm now, so 27 down, only 9 to go. Forgot to post! Confused

All the best, folks, B&W

headintheclouds · 09/12/2013 22:49

Hi All, well done all the fasters - I struggled a bit today and felt very hungry around 3 pm ! managed to push through it though and had a sub 500 cal dinner tonight.
All of this talk of LOF for 24 hrs - keep thinking I dont think I could do that...but then again isnt that what I always do on a FD ( fast from 7pm previous evening ,only drink liquids & no food till my 500 cal eve meal).
eatriskier LOVE your photo..you look amazing !
dotty its was a bit of a ball acher getting a photo up BUT if I can do it anyone can!Xmas Smile
betsy whats a peanut hottie ? I adore all things peanut flavoured but dont know what a hottie isXmas Confused
turkey I also like the verb 'to shart ' , but really loved 'Thankfuckfully' Xmas Grin

headintheclouds · 09/12/2013 22:50

oh ,was supposed to be doing the Christmas cards tonight but this thread is taking over my life ! I will now go to bed and read some more

MrsFlorrick · 09/12/2013 23:10

Successful FD here Grin

Bit of advice.... Don't scoff too much kale however delicious it is. I did this evening and I've been doing some serious sharting of my own. Hmm

In bed nursing my sore innards. Back tomorrow

BsshBossh · 09/12/2013 23:10

head yeah it's funny because loads of us have naturally been doing 24 hr LOFs but simply called them FDs; then BigChoc, Turkey or another recent thread newbie coined the acronym LOF and suddenly this has now entered the 5:2 acronym list. I like it Grin.

B&W I like your countdown idea. I may try it this Thursday as I like the idea of (apparent) health benefits of slightly longer (though not too long!) zero cal fasts...

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 09/12/2013 23:58

...swaggers in all smirky smug faced....

... You're welcome! Glad to have shared my incredible womanly worldliness with you Xmas Wink ...

Fd over here. Under 250 again.

My current pattern is..

Stop eating by ten (we eat late) on nfd. Then go through until 9 something p.m of fd on only water/blk coffee/green tea sometimes a bouillon mid afternoon. Then after 9pm I have a hot half milk half water with cinnamon/spice with a sq or two of dark choc, which seems to relax/soothe me ready for bed.

I always round up but this comes in under 250.

I then don't eat until mid afternoon at earliest the next day.

Never been a breakfast person anyway. Am finding this so much easier than trying to think about meals on a fd. Agree with all BigChoc said about it. Much easier not to have anything, than restrict - for me anyway.

I also find it so much less hassle. I sometimes found the having to think of, then prepare and calorie count a meal such a pita that it made fd harder. Now I find them so much easier, sailing through day not having to think about it at all. I'm sure the not thinking is also what stops me from feeling any hunger too.

Will have to see if I still feel the same at different times of month!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 10/12/2013 00:17

Wasn't me with the LOF title.

Still not sure exactly what qualifies as LOF, but think BCF may have said under 50 cals.

So I tend to call mine liquidish. It is all liquid though.

Apart from bit of sugar in coffee.

And the 2 sqs of choc is liquid by the time I've sucked the life out of it Xmas Grin

Think the purists might say water/green tea only counts though, not sure ??

As always though, whatever works for one, is what one should do.

Hey MrsF.... What's a shart between friends eh!? Xmas Grin
Did you eat a trough of kale, or do you think might be the time of year lurgy going around??

To coin a Betsy term of 'Stealth something' I think there might be a stealth bug about.

Have had some funny symptoms, but not felt obviously ill with cold/flu.

Anyone else???..

Maybe we should start 'Shart Watch'??

TableRunner low carb protein shakes

I buy online, since I live in the sticks. I recommend:

  • Atkins RTD (Ready To Drink) - Mocha or Latte flavour. These are 330 ml cartons, quite filling because they contain oil. They have 15 g protein and
BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 10/12/2013 00:40

Only a certain nameless avian could swagger over having managed to fart & dump simultaneously !!
Xmas Grin Flowers for the bare-faced cheek / bare-cheeked .... no, don't go there.

Toffee
Zero-cal FDs can be solid or liquid, so long as they are sub-50 cals. Done occasionally, they probably have health benefits.
LFD / LOF can have up to 500 cals (600 for chaps); it just means no solids.

^^

thinkcan · 10/12/2013 02:11

Emma I'm in about the same position as you. 5 ft 1 in, CW 117 lbs, GW 112 lbs. I was also in US earlier this year and like you ate heaps but did not put on any weight as I also did lots of walking. I find it hard not to eat till dinner time as it feels like such a loong day stretching ahead before I can eat. So I stick to 16:8 on most days which basically means having my first meal at lunch time. Twice a week, I also try to keep to around 500 calories, though more often it is closer to 1000 calories. I don't work and have lunch appointments out quite often. I try to keep dinner light especially on those days when I have had a big lunch. Not sure if this is a good formula as it has been a slow weight loss journey. But it is a WOE I can sustain easily and I reckon that is more important to me.

somewherebecomingrain · 10/12/2013 04:09

Got 5:2 induced insomnia. I find I sleep better after a LOF which is a big incentive.

Just had a few leftover rigatoni and waiting for them to hit my head iyswim.

turkey bigchoc you are making me laugh. I'm sorry I came across sharting backwards in people's reactions! I didn't experience the full impact of this brilliant and necessary new coinage!

Lol! I love it when mn provides lafs. Thank you people!

Hate insomnia.

Emmabryant123 · 10/12/2013 07:48

Fd fail here Allready,
3 hours sleep this morning...
So had bowl of porridge with semi skimmed milk n banana.
356 calories.
Bought no food to work and I can't afford the cakes even though by lunch it'll be tempting.
So dinner is another bowl of porridge, banana and Nutella. Leaving me at 964 calories after coffee to.
So doing a mini fast.
Then tomorrow a full 24 hour lof. Just one meal dinner about seven but not going count calories just be sensible.

rubbishfamily333 · 10/12/2013 07:57

Morning all, I'm having difficulty seeing the bottom of the thread as my phone is being annoying!

Well fd yesterday, I think I went over 500cals but it should still be under 600. I was freezing at work again as we don't have central heating which I was told we would get put in during the Christmas period and the boss has now changed his mind ConfusedConfusedConfused then I came home to find there was a problem with the gas meter and the heating wasn't working until around 10pm! So a very cold day I ate a bit extra.

postmanpatsreindeer · 10/12/2013 08:07

Morning all!

rubbish and emma they sound like successes to me. Sometimes life gets in the way, that's all.

somewhere I find the opposite - I'll be awake from about 4am tomorrow!

southeast nice to hear from you, hope you get settled in your new pad and life calms down a bit. Well done on maintaining your weight loss despite the obstacles.

turkey hope your innards are behaving themselves today!

LOF for me today, peppermint tea and water all day, gym tonight, no food until about 8.15 tomorrow morning.

BetsyJingleBells · 10/12/2013 08:13

Well I daren't do squats if there's a stealth shart bug around…

BetsyJingleBells · 10/12/2013 08:19

Oh yeah, my fast patterns:

Sunday - finish eating by 4 or 5pm, fast till 12 on Monday when I have less than 100 calories at lunch (slowly eliminating this but tricky to get rid of completely as I'm modelling good eating habits to a bunch of very small people!) then no further calories until 6pm - meal of around 300calories. Next meal is breakfast or lunch on Tuesday, depending on what I feel like in the morning.

Thursday fast similar but finish eating by 6.30 on Wednesday.

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 10/12/2013 08:23

Perfectly okay fast day for me too. I had a sneaky mince pie, so actually was closer to 600 than 500kcal, but not too bad as was already under for the day. :)
