TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I had loosely planned to fast today (last week) but somehow never actually started fasting! Confused Just got up and ate as normal Hmm

How do you get 'ready' in your head for a fast day?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/12/2013 17:14

Quick question as have to run out again

At 6.30pm I will have done a LOF. Is there any advantage to be gained by doing another 12 hours after that bearing in mind I need to lose another stone and tend to plateau every now and again. If I did have dinner it would be one jacket potato with salmon flavour Philly if it isn't too high in calories. I don't want to me too obsessed, I can see myself becoming a bit obsessive about how long I can fast for HmmShock.

Talkinpeace · 09/12/2013 17:22

Funnyfestive
routine frankly : I almost never eat on a Monday, and do not have food for breakfast even on NFDs

toffee
have some soup or something
or have the jacket spud with something lower fat, like sweetcorn or tuna
its about striking a balance

there's a girl at the gym who is DANGEROUSLY underweight and getting more so (engagement broken off about three months ago) please do not let your desire for control tip in the ED direction .....

TheRaniOfYawn · 09/12/2013 17:24

First fast day has been fine so far. I've had lots of herbal tea and a couple of mugs of veg bouillon and I've had no real urge to eat any more. I have veg and chick peas with harisssa roasting in the oven ready for dinner. This feelsv like a pretty sustainable way of eating, although I'll have to see how it goes when I have pms.

I went running today which was nice. For anyone here who wants to get more active in a gentle way, I'm very excited that the new game from the team who make Zombies Run is coming out on Wednesday. This one is based on walking instead of running.

BetsyJingleBells · 09/12/2013 17:26

FunnyFestive Try it tomorrow instead - tonight, close the kitchen after your meal - that will give you a head start as you will be fasting from then on. Leave a note for yourself on the kettle to remind you in the morning! Log on here for chat and support. Plan your day's eating in advance. Try and keep busy and when you feel hungry have a hot drink and see if you can wait it out another 20mins before eating.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/12/2013 17:27

Thank you TIP. I was disappointed when you said to eat and that I should have tuna instead but then I realised I can have the philly tomorrow and enjoy it much more than the tiny spoonful I would have allowed myself tonight.

I very much doubt I would ever get too thin but I will keep an eye on myself as I don't want to become obsessive and too controlling. I don't feel I am controlling but I know MIL thinks I am (but that is due to having no say at all with anything when I was growing up and feel I have a lot of time to make up. I want to control what my children have etc so that they don't go without. That sounds bad but it isn't meant to be.)

EarSlaps · 09/12/2013 17:34

Poor you with the sharting Turkey Sad. DH had a funny tummy yesterday too. So much going around at the moment, I'm just waiting for it to hit our house, that will be fun.

I downloaded a seven minute workout app yesterday. I did three circuits of it today (so a 21 minute workout). It's certainly enough to work up a sweat, but I didn't find it too hard after all my Jillian DVDs. It's a good one to get started on or if you're away from home. And free too- I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something new v

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 09/12/2013 17:40

Just had a peculiar tea of chicken kiev and ratatatouille. Using random things I have already until the shopping comes Xmas Grin

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 09/12/2013 18:00

Thanks Betsy and Tip. Am I allowed 500 cals for the day?

FunnyFestiveTableRunner · 09/12/2013 18:01

Beyond that sounds quite nice Grin

Rani what is the game you are talking about?

Talkinpeace · 09/12/2013 18:04

funnyfestive
yup, and go for something high in vegetables so that you feel really full : I have a whole pot of fresh soup, veggie bean based curry / stir fry things are good

Emmabryant123 · 09/12/2013 19:23

Hi ladies.
Well done all Fasters today, nearly their then you can eat tomorrow !

Anyway I need a rant :(
I'm back from nyc where we had each day a massive breakfast, lunch and dinner plus dessert- mid morning snack and sometimes afternoon to.
Now I lost a pound (walking 7-8 hours a day) and did a a fast before and after to, but my body has adjusted wanting food all day long and I don't like it! Starving within 10 mins of waking and making breakfast. Not like me at all who used to eat twice a day as I was hungry twice a day!
So tomorrow I have no food in to take to work (well I do but don't want to) so going to take a Flask of coffee and can of diet coke ( taste makes me feel like I've had something rather than water)
Then come home around 6:30, shower and have either porridge for dinner with nuts, bananas and raisins or a tin of soup.
But I'm struggling with my tummy growling for meals all day long! Any advice, currently weigh 119 pounds. Goal is 112 pounds as I'm only five foot and still have a fat tummy and fat thighs.

Emmabryant123 · 09/12/2013 19:25

Also they have a knew cake stand at work, huge cakes (three times the size of a cherry bakewell as one at work) and how do I resist tomorrow ! Ill be starving by 8 but then if I eat I want more but it's so hard to resist.
I want to do the fasts for the health benefits as well.

BsshBossh · 09/12/2013 19:48

Toffee if you can see yourself getting obsessed about fasting duration then go ahead and eat your 500 (or sub) dinner. 36 hour LOFs are not officially Mosley's 5:2. If you're concerned about calories then aim for a lower calorie meal instead.

FunnyFestive some people find it helps marking a fast day in their phones as an event alert. You could also mark it in the family calendar. 5:2 is so much part of my weekly routine now that come Monday and Thursday mornings I don't even have to "remember". Even my DH brings me black and not my usual white coffee (that's not to say you can't have milk in tea or coffee on FDs! It's just my FD preference).

Turkey sorry but your sharting made me LOL Grin Blush.

Emma ease your way slowly back into 5:2 and don't be too hard on yourself. It'll take your mind and body a bit of time to adjust back to healthy, normal eating. Having said that, exercise some good old fashioned self discipline too and you'll soon show that rumbling tummy who's boss!

Right, DH on his way home to make shakshouka (Dotty it's a Jewish and Arabic dish of egg poached in a spicy tomato sauce). I'm still undecided whether to join him or not. On the one hand I'm not physically hungry at all and could easily go for a 36 hr LOF; on the other hand, it's bleeding delicious and a portion is well under 500 cals (and by the time it's ready I'd have succeeded in a 24 hr LOF).

Will let you know which decision I made at the end of the night.

BsshBossh · 09/12/2013 19:53

Dotty ref. shakshouka. Here's a good 5:2-friendly recipe:
thepaddingtonfoodie.com/2013/05/10/the-5-2-challenge-some-like-it-hot-shakshuka-moroccan-eggs-in-a-spicy-tomato-sauce/

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/12/2013 20:05

Thanks BsshBossh. Remember the early days when I was always Confused? I am again. So a regular FD where you eat 500 cals is different to 36 hour fasts where you eat nothing but drink, or is it the case of you could do 36 hour fasts more often if you timed it differently? I think I confused myself there Confused.

I had baked potato with 1 tsp of olive oil and some tinned sweet corn. I would like to eat something yummy later but will not. I will look forward to having it tomorrow instead Grin.

somewherebecomingrain · 09/12/2013 20:15

Hello all.

Shakshouka is great. My mum lived in Tunisia and picked up the recipe there so I've always eaten it.

Did LOF until 6pm today when fell off wagon with baby bell, punney of tomatoes and a boiled egg. Well under 500 and with my 2 stone 8 month baby refusing anything but the breast today I reckon more cals have been sucked out of me than I've eaten.

hitc my loss has been similarly slow. I don't mind.

Talkinpeace · 09/12/2013 20:18

Emma
re the cakes thing : look at everybody touching them all on the plate at work and ask yourself how well their hands were washed - suddenly you'll find them easy to resist

the main thing to readjust from NYC food to normal food (I was there last Xmas) is to drink PLENTY of water and tea and bovril
and if you really need to eat, have half what you think you want and then see ....

BsshBossh · 09/12/2013 20:21

Toffee in my 10 months of doing 5:2 I can count on one hand how many 36 hour LOFs I've done. I've lost a nice amount of weight eating the official 500 cal way so I don't stress whether I manage a 36 hour LOF or not - I'll still lose weight.

Talkinpeace · 09/12/2013 20:22

I never do 36 LOF unless you count soup as liquid (whole pot of the celeriac and spinach one tonight)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/12/2013 20:26

I might keep the 36 fasts for when I feel huge then.

I would love something else to eat tonight so will have a go at MFP to see the calories I have had tonight.

Emmabryant123 · 09/12/2013 20:28

Thanks,
It's so hard coming back to normal. In my head I should be waking up and heading out for oatmeal with all the toppings and cream cheese bagel. Then a Starbucks caramel latte and biscuit or cake mid morning. Then lunch a huge salad/pizza/burrito / sandwich.
Then a dinner at night . BBQ chicken, fries, steaks, pizzas, pasta dishes, salads, hotdogs, burgers etc,
Then dessert.
And several drinks through the day,
So I'm finding it very very hard but will need some will power tomorrow . I will do it,
Planning porridge for when I get home, going to eat around 7pm with sliced banana, nuts (for fat and protein to remain full), and maybe some Greek yoghurt on top.
It's easier to just eat one meal on a fd for me and to go to bed not hungry and I know that but am finding it very very hard.

Emmabryant123 · 09/12/2013 20:29

Talk in piece.
The cakes are in wrappers. May have to go to upstairs canteen with my coffee away from it all tomorrow and play games/watch videos on phone in lunch break and come on here.

Talkinpeace · 09/12/2013 20:38

Emmabryant
Bagels and lox and huge coffee, then hero sub/deli, then icecream, then albanian restaurant for supper
repeat for two weeks !
I put on half a stone but shifted it.

Yes, you may need to hide when the cakes are out as stopping once started is MUCH harder than not starting :-)

dingdongduckyfuzz · 09/12/2013 20:38

Hi guys.
Congrats to successful fasters and good luck to tomorrow's fasters!

Not my best ever fast day but not a disaster either. Felt really tired and cold all day resulting in hunger pangs much earlier than usual so i had an omelette early afternoon and have had tomato soup and some crackers this evening.

There's always so much to catch up with on here! I have never managed a LOF but am losing the 'normal' way so will stick with it. Like others I find I'm in a routine with fast days now and don't really think about it.
