Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi folks!

Some heart-warming stories (and lovely pics!) on here, as usual. Please don't worry about over-sharing, this thread is the right place to unload.

Lovely to see new fasters on here - take it easy and it'll all fall into place. This WOL rocks!

LOF underway here as well - just water and black coffee for me tomorrow, with perhaps a mug of cocoa (no milk) tomorrow night.

TheRaniOfYawn · 08/12/2013 23:22

I love my hoop, but only really use it in the summer as I don't have enough space to use it indoors.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 08/12/2013 23:57

Bssh I am totally in awe of what you have achieved, not just in terms of weight loss, but also in overcoming your illness and coming through with such a fantastic attitude. We are so lucky to have you prodding us along in our personal journeys.

Here's my statistics which I hesitated to post earlier as it is really isn't that inspiring:
Age :57, Height : 5 ft 1 in
SW : 130 lbs BMI 25.5 in January 2013
CW. : 117 lbs BMI 22.8
GW : 112 lbs BMI 22

It's been a slow journey but I am at the lowest weight I have been in over 20 years. While the weight loss has not been spectacularly fast, I am happy that I have managed to lose the inevitable weight gains when I am on holidays or have house guests. I reckon I am in better shape than I was in my thirties as I have built strong muscles during this year through weight sessions at the gym and lots of hill work in my hiking and biking sessions. I have dropped 2 clothes sizes down and now fit comfortably into US size 2 which I believe is UK size 6.

BsshBossh · 09/12/2013 08:13

Thank you thinkcan. And well done on the terrific BMI reduction.

FD today for me. Will check in periodically. Really don't feel like it today though (feeling poorly)... But will be trying some exercise today which hopefully will bring my energy levels up a bit: bit of walking, bit of weights.

BetsyJingleBells · 09/12/2013 08:22

bssh You are one impressive and wonderful woman. Sorry you're feeling rubbish today though.

I'm feeling below par today as well - cold looming I suspect. But a busy day ahead so I won't get a chance to think about it until tonight.

Fast day today.

annielewis · 09/12/2013 09:29

Morning all! So, haven't eaten since 8 last night and am planning to do a LOF til tomorrow morning. Am feeling good about it after a weekend of over indulgence!

bssh and betsy hope you feel better soon. I'm stuck at home with 2 snotty kids today, so much going around at this time of year!

annielewis · 09/12/2013 09:33

thinkcan I don't know why you think those aren't impressive stats! Slow and steady and keeping it off are just as impressive to me because the whole point is that I need to know this is sustainable long term!

I am impatient though and want to get to 'goal' dress size so I can buy nice clothes, feel reluctant at moment because I know I'm going to lose more so doesn't seem worth spending!! Grin

Welcome to thread! Where abouts are you geographically?

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 09/12/2013 09:49

Morning everyone

Crikey, there are some amazing stories here I'm in awe, I really am

I'm sitting here in my running gear waiting for someone to boot my (shrinking) arse out of the door, got 4lbs to lose in the next fortnight so LOFD for 24hrs started at 10pm last night

if I can lose that bit extra I think I'll go into next year only being overweight instead of obese according to BMI!

annielewis · 09/12/2013 10:02

Oi bennetgirl get your arse moving!!! You KNOW you can do it!!!

What have you got to lose? Oh yeah that's right, 4lb!!! GrinGrin

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 09/12/2013 10:19

Morning All...

Fd here too. Carrying on my liquidish only. Definitely seems to be working. Between that and cutting out bread as much as poss, things are noticably flatter.

There is definitely lots going around. I'm waiting for one to kick in properly here. Been a right grumpy git on and off this weekend. Poor dd!
My ears have gone and lots of sinus headaches too, causing my volume levels to be all over the place, and so my patience levels (with anything) are very up and and down! As result I've become a schizophrenic neurotic screamer Xmas Grin

Lots of apologies in our house this weekend!

Thanks to all those under weather. Hopefully it will mean it's gone for the holidays??!.. Here's hoping anyway!

Bssh I'm certain once you get back on the exercise, that endorphin rush will wash over you and recharge the mental batteries. You have obviously missed your exercise and being deprived of something you enjoy is demoralising enough, without the loss of the added benefits it brings both mentally and physically. Enjoy!! And I hope your floors stay put Xmas Wink

Good luck all Monday fasters!
Get well all poorly peeps!
And chin up all those a bit down, hope you feel better soon Thanks

Oh and you're ALL sacked for missing this mornings garden workout!! Father Christmas is watching y'know!

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 09/12/2013 10:31

My mobility is much worse and as a result my weight has crept up, so I'm getting back on the wagon. Going for ADF to kick start this time, having done 5:2 before.

Have to eat in morning and evening to take tablets, so have had a banana, satsuma and some smoked salmon for breakfast, will then have tea at about 4.

Havent actually weighed today as scales are broken, but I'll know if its going the right way when my clothes start to fit again :)

annielewis · 09/12/2013 10:38

(waves at new people)

rubbish can you link to your exercise challenge group again - I can't find it and didn't click on your original link!

Have done hooping last two days but only for a few minutes really, ie less than 10.

Am going to start the squat challenge today I think (bye bye porridge arse)

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 09/12/2013 10:42

Thanks annie, have been and back again now

Only did half what I ran on friday, but that's still over a mile!

Hopefully

MrsFlorrick · 09/12/2013 11:59

Hello everyone!

It
Moves so fast here!!

Weekend was all about DC. Two birthday parties to attend at soft plays. And we took them to Westfield Stratford to the Elves Workshop which they loved and then dinner at GBK. I was restrained. Only had a burger and water. And I had fasted all day. It would have been a mini fast if I hadn't ruined it later by scoffing chocs. Hmm

It's meant to be a FD here. Won't be a liquid one tho. Had some 150cal veg mini Vietnamese roll things from M&S. just too hungry to not have anything. Besides felt sort of shaky.

I am aiming under 500 but I could easily slip today. Just very strangely hungry.

Probably not helping myself by ordering my Christmas Ocado! Have spent most of the morning thinking about yummy Christmas foods/dinner. Grin

Will be back later to have a natter with you all. Need to attend to DS who is smushing tuna sandwich all over the kitchen. Confused

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 09/12/2013 12:41

Hello everyone Smile

Will be doing a LOF of 24 hours just on water and then will make a decision whether to stretch it to a 36 hour fast.

I am frozen. Have a t-shirt, a top, a cardigan and a jumper on plus the blanket on my feet.

Worrying about DS1. Has been given a detention for something he has meant to have done when the teacher hasn't even spoken to him ShockHmm. It then transpires that the person he has been accused of not being very nice too has been attacking him verbally for months and given out information on him which has then been used in a totally inappropriate way. I am always prepared to back the school up with detentions, etc but they need to talk to DS1 too and make sure the other people are disciplined as they have behaved much worse than DS1.

In other news, my phone keeps saying my email password is incorrect when it is letting me use the same one on my lap top so if anyone can help please so as I am getting fed up and need to have email access all the time atm.

Good luck to all fasters!

Dotty342kids · 09/12/2013 12:44

Morning all!

Eatriskier and hitc you both look AMAZING! Just wow. You must feel so chuffed with yourselves.
I have no idea how to add photos on here but promise to give it a try asap.

Turkey and Annie I'm a regular hooper, and also did the 30 day squat challenge a few months ago. Can't say as I noticed much difference but had a real sense of achievement by the end of it! Smile

I have the padded hoop. Brace yourselves for some quite major bruising and tenderness at the start. I did a few mins on Day 1 and couldn't go near it again for another 5 days, it was so sore. But it gets much better, quite quickly and it's fun to do. Off to do mine whilst watching Friday night's Eastenders episode, now Grin

MariaRossa · 09/12/2013 14:11

Ooh Peplum - just came on to catch up with the weekend's posts, and read your message - gave me quite a start! (That's me! I have clearly reverted into habitual lurker mode!) I have spent so many lunch breaks reading the back threads I'm really not accustomed to being up to date. Might be forced into doing something healthier with the time. BigChoc thanks for the info re exercise and mental health - as a mildly depressed person with a shocking memory, I obviously need to step up the exercise to ward off trouble smartish! I should go out for a walk - the sun's out, and I could think about 5:2 - that way I could combine them both...

BsshBossh · 09/12/2013 14:22

Just come back from an hour's powerwalking in the crisp sunshine and feel terrific but tired. Am now running a hot bath before school pick up. Didn't have the energy to do a weights routine but I will attempt again tomorrow on an NFD. Still LOFing away but DH is making shakshouka tonight so I may have that without the egg. See if I need the fuel or not.

Dotty342kids · 09/12/2013 14:30

ooh, what's shakshouka?

annielewis · 09/12/2013 14:51

God I'm in a bad mood! Mention LOF and the world (ok, H and kids) conspire against you and decide to be as cuss awkward as possible.

Have to keep muttering 'i can eat it tomorrow' to myself. Am mainlining hot drinks.

How is everyone else doing today? I may have to turn this into a 500 day if things don;t improve...

Would love to be having a bath bssh - enjoy it. I would be doing the same except my DS is obsessed with the kitchen bin today and my DD is intent on taking all framed photos off the wall 'to rearrange them Mummy' and both are being like clingmonsters as both not well.

Hope everyone else is doing ok - think I might escape to the gym one H is home....

thinkcan · 09/12/2013 14:55

annielewis Thank you for your kind comments. I am currently based in Indonesia. I have actually been following these threads for months but rarely add my comments, partly because my time is a little out of sync with most of you. I thoroughly enjoy reading what everyone has to say though and I am sure I would have given up on this WOE months ago had it not been for the support here. I should mention that I don't usually do the 5:2, as I find 16:8 fits my lifestyle better.

Talkinpeace · 09/12/2013 15:09

For anybody who gets any form of Seasonal depression : its SUNNY - nip outside, do some hula hopping and get that hit of vitamin D that will make you all feel better.

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 09/12/2013 15:28

I'm doing alright today on only coffee so far. Not remotely hungry either. In fact I had a pretty well behaved weekend too. Survived yesterday on only a Cornish pasty from the Cornish West company wotsit shop. Plus a gingerbread latte. Was stuffed all day after that!

Same sat really. Couldn't decide what wanted all day. Ended on one chicken wing, 2 ribs handful wedges and bit coleslaw. Didn't eat it all either.

Could be related to feeling the start of a cold. And on a completely TMI note.... I sharted on Saturday! Thankfuckfully I'd just got out of the bath and was headed to loo anyway!!

So might have bit of bug! Bit scared now to expel any excess air Xmas Shock Xmas Grin

So not much of an appetite here! Sorry to those struggling today.

I am really starting to wonder about cycles and eating habits too. I only finished P few days ago. I'm sure last mth I found it easier at this point too, but put it down to my tummy issues.

I do get the raging hunger on other fd's, so I think I'm going to start a diary of hunger/mood/m.cycle to see what kind of patterns there are. Always useful to be in tune with body. Forearmed is forewarned an' all that!

TMI Turkey! Well good job it's a fast day, it's put me right off!

Public service announcement: Peanut Hottie is currently half price in Sainsburys! I love the taste though I mix it with Barley Cup (1 tsp of each) or it's too sweet for me.

Also on the hot, sweet drink theme, I bought some gingerbread coffee syrup today - I'll be making my own gingerbread lattes at the weekend! Yum.

Was going to be liquid only 24 hour fast (ie no food from yesterday's dinner with a sub 500 calorie dinner today) but ended up eating a small apple and a satsuma after my miso soup lunch. Fairly minimal damage though. Currently cooking up some chilli for dinner which I'll eat with a small jacket potato and lots of salad.
