Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 04/12/2013 09:32

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Here is a less well-known danger of being overweight:

Drugs are developed for the 'average' person, e.g. 'normal' weight. Clinical trials often exclude those outside a healthy BMI. Hence, some medicines may not work properly for them.

This recent study is an example:

ScientificAmerican

The emergency contraceptive / morning-after pill is completely ineffective for women who weigh more than 176 pounds (12st 8); its effectiveness starts to fall in women over 165 pounds (11st. 11).

These pills use a compound called levonorgestrel to prevent pregnancies taking hold.

Tip: Maybe mention this to your logically-challenged sparring partner in your ongoing Fat and Healthy battle ? Sounds like we should avoid her passing on those illogical genes too often !

peplum41 · 08/12/2013 17:26

bshh inspiring posts earlier, also glad you're now healthy.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/12/2013 17:56

Just had dinner of cold left overs. Now I can not wait to fast tomorrow as feel full, not too full, but I know if I ate everything on my plate I would start too. Me not being able to wait to go without food Shock.

On the subject of mince pies, I make my own mince meat and will make the first pies next week I think.

Southeastdweller · 08/12/2013 18:18

eatriskier You're looking really wonderful in your latest pic. As I've said before it's like looking at two different people on your profile page.

peplum41 · 08/12/2013 18:36

toffee would appreciate mincemeat recipe.

I'm sure I can declare todays fast a success! Discovered a can of bean and barley soup by suma is only 108 cals for entire tin. Needed some spices and a dash of Nandos Peri Peri sauce, but ok. Pleased as felt starved this morning, but decided to keep going until lunch, then felt fine.

mariarossa been meaning to say hi all weekend! You must be the champion of lurkers. Don't retreat back there, your post was fascinating.

Goes back to thinking about Mincepies.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/12/2013 19:08

Mincemeat

1/2lb/ 8oz/226g cooking apples
1/2lb currants
1/2lb stoned raisins
1/2lb sultanas
4oz glace cherries
4oz chopped mixed peel
4oz shelled walnuts
8oz shredded suet
1 lb Demerara sugar
2 tsp mixed spice
3-4 fl oz brandy or rum

Peel, core and shop the apples.
Mix in a large bowl the dried fruit with the nuts and apple.
Blend in the suet, sugar and spice.
Add enough brandy or rum to make a moist mixture.
Cover the bowl with a cloth and leave for 48 hours to allow the fruit to swell.
Stir well and put the mince meat into clean jars. Seal and cover as for jam.

BsshBossh · 08/12/2013 19:48

ChristmasPudding well done for smashing through your plateau.
Head you look terrific!

I haven't exercised in more than a month but tomorrow when I awake I'll be donning my gym gear. I think my pelvic floor is ready. Cardio and weights. But slowly slowly does it. Can't wait!

FD tomorrow too. Woohoo!

Talkinpeace · 08/12/2013 19:56

Southeast glad you are settled for Christmas that man.
Moving houses is a bugger (remembers sleeping on the floor in a YMCA for 2 months) : buy yourself a couple of baubles, "acquire" the spare brances from your area and make a belter of a decoration
and well done on not retreating into emotional eating through stress
you are a star
need a pic of you looking amazing for crimble (might even let you off the frock bit !!)

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 08/12/2013 20:03

Bssh, Toffee I'm FDing tomorrow too and presumably the regular Monday crowd. It does feel like a nice clean start to the week.

Btw: I do alternate weeks of either Fri +Mon FDs or Sat+Tue, plus I've added 2 mini-FDs, which also very accordingly. I like the variety. Anyone else switch things around ?

peplum41 · 08/12/2013 20:06

I missed a bit of the last page.

hitc wow You look all in and out in the right places. Have you got any from last years Xmas do, for your own personal comparison- ooh matron!

bcf your photos sound intriguing. I don't know what goes on at that place you euphemistically refer to as a "gym" , but there's none of that carry on at mine.

peplum41 · 08/12/2013 20:10

Thanks toffee, will give it a go. Might sneak a bit more ale in, and use veggi suet of course.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/12/2013 20:11

Was telling DH if I didn't eat anything else (namely choc chip cookies) I could do a 24 hour fast from my dinner tonight at 6.30 to tomorrow night when dinner would be nearer 7.30pm. He said oh, start tomorrow and then I was thinking no and then he didn't want a biscuit so I decided I wouldn't bother and he was denying me food Grin. I am sat imagining a cookie and how lovely it would be and I don't want one as I can still feel dinner and I am not hungry.

I know, I know I am so boring with all the realisations but I just can't believe the change in me. Where have I gone? Where is the woman who had a battle with food for years when I ate to hurt others when it was only me being hurt.

dingdongduckyfuzz · 08/12/2013 20:11

Bssh good to hear you are healthy and a survivor - plenty of it in the females of my family so I cross my fingers every time I visit the doc

Southeast glad you have somewhere to call home

Everyone else - I've lost track of your loveliness, forgive me?!

Went to cinema to see frozen today, lovely film, if a little more musical than I'd expected - recommended if you need a little seasonal cheer

Snce then, coq au vin with roasties, nibbles galore, too much wine...FD tomorrow though!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/12/2013 20:23

peplum41 - yes, I used vegetarian suet but do be careful with the alcohol. Haven't made them for a few years I would say that with 4 fl oz you wouldn't really want too much more booze in them.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/12/2013 20:29

Another tip is to turn the jars upside down and back again every couple of days.

ChristmasPudding6 · 08/12/2013 20:40

Toffee thanks for the recipe. I've never thought of making my own mincemeat before. Fed up of being disappointed by mince pies not coming up to scratch each year as the manufacturers alter recipes to save a few pennies in costs or add a new posh sounding ingredient so they can charge a premium.
I also love the way we can share notes/recipes on proper food and lose weight without having to settle for the low fat low taste rubbish we've been 'treating' ourselves with on all those low cal diets!!

EatriskierDrinkAndBeMerry · 08/12/2013 20:59

hitc gorgeous lady in a gorgeous dress, looking fabulous

Apologies to anything I've missed, been mega busy and this thread zooms. Just made myself a giant stew pot of spiced butternut squash and lentil soup, waiting for it to cool a bit so I can whizz it up. Then bed.

Where did my weekend go????

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 08/12/2013 21:05

I make mince meat every year and every year I am surprised how easy it is to make and I do think it is nicer than shop bought mincemeat in a jar and the finished pies are nicer than shop ones Grin.

somewherebecomingrain · 08/12/2013 21:14

eatriskier wow! That must feel good wearing that dress!

bsssh wow in a different way. That is a truly life changing experience.

turkey you actually make me laugh out loud so please feel free to post anything!

I do think that there is good info/support in other parts of mn but that isn't to say stop talking on here.

I'm plateauing again but think it will happen when it happens.

Fasting tomorrow so see you lot then.

TheRaniOfYawn · 08/12/2013 21:18

Hello. I'm jumping in to say hello as I'm going to try fasting tomorrow for the first time. I had a stomach bug last week and lost my appetite so I thought I might as well take advantage of being out the habit of eating.

I'm quite nervous though and am a bit worried that I will feel sick or get incredibly grumpy.

Talkinpeace · 08/12/2013 21:43

RaniofYawn
Welcome aboard
Monday fasts are a great way to start : lots of us fast on a Monday
the main thing on your first try is
a) drink LOTS especially water
b) avoid sugar and carbs as they make you hungry
c) if you find that its all too much then eat and try again another day as there is NO FAILURE

BsshBossh · 08/12/2013 22:19

Rani welcome! You'll be in good company tomorrow as it's a popular fasting day. Pop in and out when you can and we'll support each other through the fast.

annielewis · 08/12/2013 22:27

Hi everyone - have just speed read the thread - I don't know where to start! You are all so lovely and looking more gorgeous with every new batch of pics! I've had a nutty busy weekeknd, was out at a birthday party last night but forgot to take a pic. Got a xmas one coming up so will do a re-do.

Excited as my hoop arrived yesterday turkey you are going to love it!! I hada go yesterday and it is fab! So much easier than non weighted ones and I can tell its going to be a bit addictive in the element of trying to keep it going for more than a few minutes!!

Anyway I have over done it this weekend and haven't really bothered counting cals so was thinking of doing a LOF tomorrow - haven't done one before but thought I would not eat anything 'solid' now until breakfast time Tuesday.

What do you all have on your LOF's? Am not really up for black tea/coffee but reckon I can do it easily in white tea and coffee and bovril with tabasco.

Does this sound doable???

Well done on all your NSv's - I'm looking forward to that skinny feeling, also don't like having baths as feel cold and don't really like looking at my porridgy bits.

turkey and betsy (or was it TiP) I have one of those sodding bumbagss too...... Grin

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 08/12/2013 22:41

TheRani Hello!
Don't worry about it. Just start the day - use all the tips on here to help. If you don't make it through day - so what! Just do what you can, ease yourself in, it will come!

We all start differently, yet we all tend to get there one way or another! Good luck!

BigChoc I'm always open to a bit of mixing it up. Variety is the spice of life an' all that, and I do like it spicy! My weeks are largely dictated by what's occurring. Pref is mon and wed for max flexibility, but it does vary from week to week with no probs so far.

Am loving the pics so far. Can't wait to see more. Think I'll just don every xmassy garment can find as I won't be wearing a frock for anything. Will have face blanked though as I might've 'over shared' on here slightly Xmas Grin

TurkeyAtYuleHoHo · 08/12/2013 22:51

Oooh! AnnieL - I am excited now hearing that!! Hopefully will be here tmw. I am only really now finding out how good they are supposed to be for backs too, so am doubly pleased as that is a real problem area for me. So excited to think I'm going to batter the fat whilst helping my back at same time Xmas Grin

LOF - I did two fd last week where on f day 1 I had liquid only plus one tiny apple and sq of choc. F day 2 liquid only plus two sq choc. Both times food was consumed after 24 hrs of no solids. It seemed to work for me. Came in under 250 both days and I really preferred it to fd days with proper solids.

Don't think I'll go back now. Though always nice to know ... I could eat if I wanted to.
