Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 32 - We can eat it tomorrow: toffees, toffee sponge or even toffee sausages!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Gah, big typo in that statement that amuses you so Turkey!

Confessional: I bought a tub of ben and jerry's - my DH is out again tonight so it's for me. Weight has actually gone up with healthy & low calorie NNN/D for the last many weeks so I've decided some seriously high calorie weekending is in order to shock my system. I may well have eaten too many mini mince pies today as well. They were blooming lovely.

And then tomorrow I'll start on the jiggle busting (again x too many times to count).

I'm very happy to see folks using this thread for their life/relationship woes - I think establishing control of our own body and appetite via 5:2 gives us a chance to think about all the other stuff in our lives. It's all part of unpicking the elaborate intertwining of food and emotions that is a common feature of so many people's lives. We are a support thread and although there are other 'designated' places these things could be posted, we know there'll be a sympathetic response here and sometimes that is exactly what's needed.

Do remember that although it doesn't always feel like it, this is public domain.

Meant to add before - you look absolutely fabulous EatRisky. What an inspiration!

You have all been so welcoming, patient and lovely. I can't thank you enough Smile.

The very wise Betsy sums it all up. What a wonderful thread this is :)

Toffee amazing inch loss there, well done.

Hurrah for all the other losses!

My recent NSV was realising how much I love baths now that my entire body can be completely submerged by the bubbly water. I hated baths when I was larger cause half my body would always be cold.

BetsyJingleBells · 07/12/2013 17:59

^ YY to baths - I realised I'd put on (a lot) of weight when my thighs and arse efficiently dammed the sides of the bath so that if I got in while the tap was running I could fill the tap end of the bath without letting water reach my head end. I have a big bath. Xmas Sad

postmanpatsreindeer · 07/12/2013 18:50

well done turkey and toffee !

eat I'm looking forward to seeing your pic on my laptop. iPod won't do you justice!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 20:23

I thought I would try one of these stuff your face days I keep reading about. Picked Smarties. Had some. Feel bleurgh. Good that I recognised it but a bit sad I can't just stuff my face for fun anymore Confused.

BsshBossh · 07/12/2013 20:36

Toffee why don't you try some of your own baked goodies instead; much nicer than sickly sweet Smarties.

Coveredinweetabix · 07/12/2013 20:41

A cheering tale for any of you worrying about Xmas weight gain.
Two weeks ago (24th Nov) I got down to 10st7. This was very exciting as it meant I should be able to get to my mini goal by my target date of 1st Dec, especially if I kept shredding which. I'd done every day the previous week. On both the Sat and Sun I went over me TDEE as I often do at the weekend. Fasted as usual on the Monday without any problems. Tuesday I aimed to stick to TDEE and did OK until around lunchtime when I just started demolishing cake, paused for chocolate and want back to cake. Weds fast went pear shaped. Thurs ate well over the TDEE. Fri fast also went pear shaped and I ate well over my TDEE. By the Sat (my official weigh in day and target date for mini goal) I was up to 10st11. I had a very social weekend with lots of eating & drinking I weighed in last Monday (2nd Dec) at 10st13! The only comfort was that I hadn't gone above 11st! To my surprise (and relief), I found it easy to stick to my fast on Mon and to my TDEE on Tues. On Weds my 500cal included two gin&tonics but the McD's cheeseburger took me over the limit. Thurs I was over TDEE but not far over. Fri I was about 650 cal. This morning, I dared step back on the scales and was delighted to be back at 10st7! Just a word of warning (and TMI alert) - I passed a lot of wind this week!

I was intending to come in and catch up on the whole thread but got to p2 and MrsF's comment about writing Christmas cards and realised that that was what I was supposed to be doing tonight so am off to get on with that.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 21:02

You are right, BsshBossh. I bought the smarties for someone else then found something better for them so have been just lying their for a week and I just thought I would have some. Should have just had a piece of my brownie. Cross now. Still feel bleurgh and a bit down too Confused.

Talkinpeace · 07/12/2013 21:02

weetabix
which YET AGAIN proves the point that rapid weight gain is not fat
it is undigested food and fluid
so if you get back to the fasting PDQ it never has a chance to settle on the hips and is gone in a jiffy

you do realise HOW hardcore we are all going to be in January Xmas Wink

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 07/12/2013 21:12

^^

Toffee
Well done you. That's a fantastic loss in inches that will improve your health. You should be really proud, because you took charge of your eating and did this for yourself. You managed regular FDs, despite all the problems you've been suffering.
Flowers
I agree with Bssh: eat your own cooking, not Smarties or other junk. If I could cook like you on FDs, Mr B & Mr J would be very lonely and unFrenzied. And I wouldn't have to eat reindeer.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 07/12/2013 21:20

Betsy I loved reading about porridge arse. You've coined another 5:2 phrase.

We really should consider making a list of our new vocabulary, not the stuff like FD etc, but the really important things for newbies to understand:
porridge arse, deviant porridge, ......
Hmm Hadn't realised before, that porridge was so prevalent in this WOL !

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 21:23

I didn't do much really. It was all you guys Flowers. You all have kept me going. I just can't believe the change in me emotionally. Yesterday I went shopping in my skinny jeans and knee boots and saw myself in the M&S mirror and thought I looked really slim. I know it is all relative as I am 11 stone 3lbs but I was so fat before.

I feel the need to bake but it is a bit late now so I will think about what I shall make tomorrow. I have already made Tom's Bomb for the kids' pudding tomorrow but might make something that can go in their lunch boxes.

Talkinpeace · 07/12/2013 21:26

(books meet up in Toffee's kitchen)

rubbishfamily333 · 07/12/2013 21:30

Toffee - well done on your cm losses Grin

So I am still to create the challenge thread on exercise section which I can do now, but not sure if I can link on here as I'm on my phone and my laptop seems to have given up completely HmmHmmHmm

I'm feeling miserable today really fed up, I think it's because it's nearly Christmas and it always makes me feel alone Hmm

Anyway on a positive note I completed day one of the push up challenge and the squat challenge Grin Grin Grin

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 07/12/2013 21:37

I completely agree that Turkey, MrsF, Toffee or anyone else going through a tough time, should feel free to post about their problems in whatever detail they want. Noone needs to worry or apologise about doing this.

We are all in this WOL together, supporting each other in a lovely online 5:2 community. The best support is holistic, dealing with the whole person, rather than focusing only on the size of their tum and what they put in there.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 21:41

I felt blue too earlier, rubbish. Must be something in the air.

DCs put the tree up but one set of lights is broken and the other has to go in the bin as it is 240 volts so not safe. DH said I can get new ones though Grin. I love lights. They are my favourite thing about decorations along with tinsel.

BigChocFrenzyAteYourReindeer · 07/12/2013 21:52

Rubbish Well done on starting the challenge so well. Do keep us informed, including about any aching cheeks etc !
Xmas Smile
I'm sorry you feel lonely at this time of year. I'm alone now and it felt a bit odd the first couple of years, but I really don't mind now. I just order in advance all my favourite foods, books, hunk movies and enjoy a totally degenerate Christmas my way.
Xmas Grin
I also take the opportunity of being off work to visit my favourite restaurants - remember a number of us have said there is no problem eating out on your own.
Today, I've just had a daring hair trim in preparation for a couple of Xmas parties at work and gym. I never act my age ! I must remember to post my Xmas pix so you can all enjoy my hairdo as well !
Xmas Smile

rubbishfamily333 · 07/12/2013 21:56

Toffee - Christmas does it to me every year! The last couple of years I took to drink a bottle of wine a couple of times per week alone Confused I don't want to do that this year as I don't want to hinder my weightloss!

Well dd and I got the decorations out and will get our tree tomorrow or Monday.

Also we got the photo albums out and that made me feel sad too. Partly because when dd was about 1-2 I was slim and looked young and like I had a sparkle in my eye. Also because when I look back at alot of my photos I can remember alot of times I felt lonely in those photos, I was smiling etc but I know how I felt. I can clearly see this has caused me to comfort eat and I want to stop feeling lonely but I don't know how!

Sorry I know I sound depressing at the moment but it just Christmas Confused

rubbishfamily333 · 07/12/2013 22:01

Bigchoc - I think that's where I go wrong, I don't do what I want around Xmas like ordering films etc. I think this year I will try to do more of that. Sometimes I find myself feeling like I just don't know what I want to do.

Dd is only 6 so I can't expect her to decide Grin

I often feel like I don't even know what makes me happy and often full my time doing things I think I should be doing! Then I just end up having wine and chocolate etc to compensate for not enjoying my time.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 22:22

rubbish there is so much pressure for everything to be perfect. Accept that is just marketing and let it go.

BsshBossh · 07/12/2013 22:22

rubbish I think it's time you sat down, had a really good think, and compile a master list of all the nice things you want to do for yourself. Be very specific but no need to rush. Take the time to think it through. Then you'll never be at a loss over doing things that make you happy. It's like a bucket list but more immediate.

One of my favourite Christmases and New Year was spent 100% alone and I shopped for nice food and planned a lovely walk and good TV / pay-per-view movie and long luxury bubble bath soak and good book... I still try and do nice things for myself when DH is away or working late.

BsshBossh · 07/12/2013 22:24

DH is quite good at this too. If I'm away he cooks a really nice meal for himself, puts good music on and reads the papers cover to cover! That's his idea of bliss :)

rubbishfamily333 · 08/12/2013 00:27

Bssh - you sound very strong and independent. The funny thing is everyone thinks I'm strong and independent which I am but I also feel lonely at times.

Alot of things I enjoy doing are activities with other or going out. And when I have to be at home in the evenings with dd that's just not possible!

I will have a think of things I like to do as right now i feel lost and unsure. How odd to not know what you enjoy doing? Grin
