Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well weigh in today was 10.3.2 last fri was 10.3.8 do not down as much as I would have hoped but its totm so hoping next week a few lbs will disappear Wink

On the bright side I'm certain I havnt been this weight since I sprained my ankle in feb so it's going in the the right direction Grin

Well done to all with losses today! And when all those that want to say bad things about 5.2 see us all being slim and happy AND eating what we want then they will know Wink

Coveredinweetabix · 22/11/2013 11:00

And another thing I've noticed. I no longer stomp heavily up the 12 stairs at nursery but run up them. Partly due to increased fitness; partly due to being smaller & so there being less of me to lug around. I can completely understand why your TDEE reduces as you lose weight as everything becomes easier.

Spamfrit · 22/11/2013 11:12

Thankyou all!
I have to learn to say boo and hiss to all the cynical people out there. I think you're right its just easier not to tell. I think there is some jealousy when people lose weight, because theyve managed to take control of their lives.

Another bonus to this WOE is that you don't have to tell. You can eat mindfully normal and choose a FD when you're not busy or meeting up with people for meals. Golly that makes it sound like a guilty secret! Not at all!

Great thread

Spamfrit · 22/11/2013 11:14

weetabix I hope you run up the stairs in an 'eye of the tiger/rocky' kind of way!

AngieM2 · 22/11/2013 13:29

chocolate interesting you not telling the hubby. I thought about not telling mine for the same reason. However, I told him by asking him if he fancied giving it s ho....he didn't but had never once questioned me or thought it was stupid. In fact, on Monday we went out for a walk and stopped for a drink, he didn't bat an eyelid when I refused the hot chocolate and biscuit in favour of a tea (was a FD)

toffeesponge · 22/11/2013 13:36

I will be rubbish and just say a big hello to everyone.

How do you keep up with what everyone has said??! I have had a busy morning so no time to come on and there are tonnes of new posts.

NSV for me - bought two new tops from M&S for layering as it is so cold and bought size 14. I used to buy 16 or 18 as I have large bosoms but with weight loss I can now buy a 14 Grin.

Been shopping and wrapping presents and just about to have a quick lunch and have to go out and pick up the kids winter hats and then school run though should have time to come home in between as now don't have to go to the supermarket.

Coveredinweetabix · 22/11/2013 14:01

toffee - I don't keep up. Which reminds me that I have been meaning to ask after your daughter & have failed. How is she?

FD fail here, as predicted. I had a burger & fries at lunch. Delicious! And have now just had an M&S mini bite thing. Provided I don't have any more of the latter (and I can see the box from my office so it may be a challenge), that should be it for me for the day other than milk in hot drinks.

s F - how are your in-laws? Have they come to stay or is not-so-dear H off there for the weekend?

MrsFlorrick · 22/11/2013 14:33

Covered. H is off to Scotland tonight.

I tried to persuade PILs to come here for a week. The DC would love and it would take their minds off it. But no FILs too upset.

What's the difference anyway H has seen DC Tuesday morning and that is it for this week.

Sitting outside school in car waiting for DD. DS is snoring in his car seat. Grin Wish I could have a little snooze. Very tired for some reason.

Off to Waitrose once DD comes. Let the DC choose their own dinner. Yikes. God knows what they'll come up with

So many NSV on here this week Grin. It's brilliant. I do love a good NSV. They feel better than the numbers on the scales.

May buy some chicken legs and roast them for me for dinner or some soup. Can't decide.

PoshPaula · 22/11/2013 14:38

Just checking and saying hi to everyone! I am on a mini-fast today, as I've only managed one proper FD this week and tonight, well sorry but I won't miss out on my wine.

I will get back to the regime next week. And I will feel better for it!

duckyfuzz · 22/11/2013 16:11

MrsF have some Cake and then get in a Tardis and go back in time to sort DH out. He is not being any sort of a father, its so sad for you and such hard work Sad.

NFD here, 1400 cals of TDEE left for wine, fajitas, chips and dips tonight...

NotAsTired · 22/11/2013 16:32

mrsf are you sure your hip hasn't flared up because of all the stress you have been dealing with? DP's back/hip always gets worse when he's under a lot of stress.

spam. Is it because you have been on other diets and thinks "oh hear we go again" or does she like the fact that she is skinny and you are not? Or is it because she is misinformed? I very rarely tell people that I am doing 5:2. People have such strong (misinformed) opinions about it.

All the acronyms are making my head spin! Grin. I have no clue what everyone is talking about.

bssh enjoy your cheese fest. Smile

Managed 2 fds this week, and loss of 1lbs. Have been doing 16:8 on nfd these past two weeks. I seemed to have got into a bit of a rhythm. On the days that I work, I don't have time and don't need breakfast first in the morning. I just have lunch and then dinner. On non-working days, I get DS ready for school, school run, house work and the sit down for my breakfast - it's such a pleasure to take my time and really savour it in the peace and quiet.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Talkinpeace · 22/11/2013 17:18

Gosh, you don't need to weigh yourself / diet / be careful, because you are so slim
No, you silly moo, I'm so slim because I DO

I'm quite evangelical about 5:2 - but then much of my social life is at the gym and the average age of many of my classes is late 40s so finding a nice way to stay at non painful knees weight is a bit of a holy grail!

Half a pound down this week. I'd like to lose three more by the end of term but probably wont. Oh well.

Spamfrit · 22/11/2013 17:51

notastired Misinformed I reckon! She's very thin but I think she's hypersensitive of it, and always justifies herself-"I can't put on weight" "I eat loads etc". If I hear of anything I don't know or understand I tend to research it first or inquire in a non judgmental way before adding critique!

It makes life interesting I suppose, we're all different etc!

toffeesponge · 22/11/2013 17:56

Coveredinweetabix - DD is fine now thank you. Back at school and giving me cheek!!

MrsF - enjoy the break from MrF Wink. Enjoy Waitrose shopping. Do tell us what the children choose Grin.

I am late but I am sure it will come. Any ideas for keeping on track as usually I use it as an excuse to have chocolate?

Another issue I have is sometimes I don't want or need to eat but know I can't last until I can eat (ie don't want lunch but can't last until dinner with DH at 7ish) so sometimes I make myself have something going against the whole point of only eating when hungry.

Today I was feeling so tired I bought a coke and a mars bar for energy. I didn't have the coke and really annoyed myself by eating the whole bar when I had had enough after half. Need to keep a small plastic box in the car for such times as that has happened twice now. I haven't had a mars bar for months so I did quite enjoy it.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/11/2013 18:26

Tip My social life is also mainly at the gym, or gyms to be exact as I belong to 2 gyms, in adjacent roads.

The mantra is snack every 2 hrs so your muscles don't dissolve. Fasting is so "dangerous" that I don't mention it at gym or work, even to friends.

However, I notice many gym members and almost all women 35yrs+ are overweight, including the women trainers. They tromp for hours on the treadmill, like demented hamsters, or lift those pretty little pink 2 kg weights.

I belong to the HIIT / heavy lifting / boxing gangs, which has many slim folk. However, I was shocked to learn they keep their figures by perpetual CR, 12-1400 for the women, every day !

Female trainers lead all the Weight Watchers classes, but as they cannot regain their own healthy weight, I am surprised so many victims attend - and pay for the privilege, also buying the god-awful WW food.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/11/2013 18:32

MrsF Will your DCs request deep-fried Mars bars & chips ?

I am at a gym charity night, so bouts of training interspersed with massive quantities of chocolate, cheese wotsits, tangerines and bananas, their idea of catering !

I'm having a good time, but I shouldn't have had such a huge lunch and then started here. Just as well it's FD tomorrow.

MrsFlorrick · 22/11/2013 19:03

Toffee. Well the DC chose garlic bread and pasta. And begged me to make home made pear crumble. Which I did.

We got no further than the crumble and DD vomited all over the dinner table. She has vomited twice since and his diarrhoea. Great D&V in the house.

DH isn't going to Scotland now. He is coming home. His flight was cancelled and they offered to transfer him till tomorrow evening which is pointless. Hmm

MrsFlorrick · 22/11/2013 19:12

Bigchocfrenzy. It must take steely willpower to live on 1200 cals a day permanently.

I am laughing at the cheese wotsits. Eeeww. Especially along with chocolate. Not a nice combo.

And Grin about the deep fried mars bars. I imagine DS would eat that. He loves choc and anything breaded and fried.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 22/11/2013 19:30

BigChoc, I'd hate to live a life where you have to watch every single morsel

I don't go to a gym but regularly do a workout from the 30 shred programme, I like my exercise like I like my food. Robust, hearty and warming :-D

BsshBossh · 22/11/2013 19:38

toffee I'm rarely hungry at conventional mealtimes. If left to my own devices I eat around 10.30/11am, 2.30/3pm and 9pm and usually don't have to snack because those are my natural hunger points. Do you have to eat at set times?

BsshBossh · 22/11/2013 19:45

I think I lasted a couple of days eating the 1200 cals MFP recommended me back when I was 210 lbs. I remember thinking I'd rather remain fat than eat so little. Thank God I had the sense to research TDEE, Eat More To Weigh Less, and eating 10-15% below TDEE. I think that's how I managed to last a year on MyFitnessPal and a calorie restricted diet - I was eating loads!

toffeesponge · 22/11/2013 19:46

Good choice their MrsFKids. Shame about the D&V Sad. Does MrF know about it?

Bssh I don't have to eat at set times but had months of cooking food for the kids, something else for dh at 7 and something else for me at 7 so don't really want to go back to that and dh really wants to eat at 7 as some days doesn't get lunch. I might get him a ready meal for one day next week and see what times it is I actually want to eat.

Talkinpeace · 22/11/2013 19:55

I guess I'm lucky in that a lot of my gym pals are endurance swimming / yoga
so we are much more into tone than weight
AND
we are of an age that we accept that different people can have different build while actually having very similar body fat
and the REAL issue is to control body fat
BMI / weight / you name it are all proxies for body fat ....
and we are "posh" enough to enjoy restaurant lunches so utterly unwilling to be daft every day.

Calorie intake in the early 1970's was higher than today, but the calories were in discrete meals and we were much more active ...

have you all be listening to this : utterly fascinating
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03k5dvd

MrsFlorrick · 22/11/2013 20:28

Toffee & Bssh. My eating times have changed loads since DC.

When I was working, I would usually eat breakfast at work just before 8 unless I was travelling. Lunch would often be 2pm and dinner 8 or later.

Now I eat with DC, except breakfast. So lunch is early 12 at the latest and dinner is on the table at 5pm.

When DD was first weaned, I found it unthinkable to change the times of day I ate. But now I prefer it. It also stops me eating two dinners Grin

H didn't know about D&V until he got home. Wink He is sorting the washing machine. It's blown a fuse or something. I almost blew a fuse when it stopped working 2. Mins after putting DDs vomity clothes in!

DC in bed. DS asleep and DD almost. She hasn't been sick again though. Fingers crossed tonight won't be too taxing. I fully intend to kill D&V germs I may have ingested with alcohol shortly. I am reliably informed it works Wink

How's the charity lifting and the chocolatey wotsits, Bigchocfrenzy?

toffeesponge · 22/11/2013 20:45

Please have some alcohol on my behalf MrsF. I can't afford the calories and already have a headache coming.

Please talk to him this weekend. Your life is precious. Don't waste it putting up with knobheads.
