Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

mrsf you have done so well Smile

I remeber you saying you have 10lbs left to loose, what is your current weight?

rubbishfamily333 · 21/11/2013 23:27

And btw. As it was totm and I was freezing and hungry all day, I decided to treat myself to two new onsies today as I havnt brought new pjs for ages!

Normally I would comfort eat but as I couldn't because it was a fast day I treated myself instead Grin I'm thinking this could be a NSV Grin

MrsFlorrick · 21/11/2013 23:31

Rubbish. My current weigh is 72 kg which I think is 11.3 stone/159lbs.

And before any one jumps on me and says that's massive you're still huge! I am over 5'10" (5'10" and a half to be accurate). Hence the big sounding number on weight. Anyway 3kg from goal which is 6lbs I think.

Anyway I am a long way from where I started at 110kg Sad Blush Those numbers still fill me with shame.

Thanks Everyone.

rubbishfamily333 · 21/11/2013 23:34

Wow you have done so well! And don't feel ashamed, you worked so hard to get to the weight you are now and it's a massive achievement Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 21/11/2013 23:39

Well done on all the weight loss, MrsF

Well done, Rubbish, resisting womanfully the comfort eating at totm.

Coo, I managed about TDEE today!
Shock
We're all ending the day on a high.
Night everyone

Breadandwine · 22/11/2013 01:33

And before any one jumps on me and says that's massive you're still huge!

MrsF - No-one is going to say that to you - it's just not that sort of a thread!

Those numbers still fill me with shame.

Did you not see my post on the last thread -
Tue 19-Nov-13 23:22:07?

Please put that thought in a box, hammer the lid on, and put the box out in the shed.

It has no place on this thread!

We don't blame anyone - and we certainly don't blame ourselves!

Morning all!

Yes bigchoc you are to be congratulated on your catchy memorable acronyms. I'm in on hifuc and swathe but can't commit to nnd.

covered that is an AMAZING NSV. The ones that let you live your life better bring tears to my eyes.

mrsf fab analysis of diets and metabolism. I can see why you were board level. I am starting to bring in some low carb eating to 5:2 as I have this breast feeding linked sugar problem and they are working well together. I had two CSs and would never judge. I would be dead without cs and so would my kids.

breadandwine Shockre fannies comment!Grin

Oh what am I gonna eat today?

BetsyBell · 22/11/2013 07:00

mrsF I appreciate that you want to get to your goal weight first but please do post that analysis of other weight loss on the inspirations thread. It's a rather helpful read as I'm sure plenty of other potential 5:2ers have tried many many other diets!

Your judgey 'friends' sound as lovely as your 'D'H Hmm

BetsyBell · 22/11/2013 07:10

moving I'd call that a brilliant victory to not succumb to eating food you'd regret. Think your DH could be a bit more supportive though. Get him to watch the Horizon episode (link in OP - hopefully still works, I haven't checked for a while) and maybe he'll join you. Lots of us have partners who are convinced of the health benefits, and looking a whole lot better on it Grin

bigchoc I think NN is going to be term time based for me, and will be entirely flexible for special events! But I plan to attempt to be mindful about it over the holidays too. And I will throw in a fast or 2, or 16:8 if I can't manage a full day.

I need to remember that I don't like over eating anymore.

BsshBossh · 22/11/2013 07:17

Friday weigh-in. 0.4 lbs down. Snail's pace now I'm so close to goal. Will celebrate now with 3 NFDs Grin.

somewherebecomingrain · 22/11/2013 07:25

breadandwine I was just curious about the Barenaked noodles. But I'd rather have veg - the noodles achieve nothing that veg doesn't do better.

bsssh what is goal and where are you now?

Spamfrit · 22/11/2013 07:55

Morning all!

Mrs F I agree there are a lot of judging Mums out there, mostly lurking in posh huddles in toddler groups. I didn't manage to breastfeed with my two sons and felt the eyes of judgement all around when I produced the milkshake formula. Thank goodness for the normo's out there to balance it out.

I feel I need to winge! again on the judgement line of thought. I told my really good friend about my current WOE. I wish I hadnt. Since then she keeps dropping these unhelpful remarks. (the ones where they are slipped into conversation rapidly before you get a chance to defend!). So far she said "faddy diet" , when asked what I eat on a FD "that sounds like prison food", "I don't think you need to lose weight " (my BMI was 27 post baby so I at least want to be healthy). I told her about the health benefits but now just let the comments go. She is rake thin!

I wouldnt mind if she was educated and had at least watched the Horizon programme. Anyway rant over. How do you all deal with any unhelpful comments that come your way?

Scale victory..in the 11's after 3 weeks of stalling!

eatriskier · 22/11/2013 08:08

spam Ah the naysayers. Drive me nuts. Though having said that I've not come across a thin one yet. Its quite easy to put an overweigh person down when they have a go at you and you're thin. In your position, as its a good friend, I'd be inclined to tell her that whilst you appreciate her concern you are an adult and can make judgement calls for yourself, including looking into the science of a situation and that if she has nothing constructive to say you would prefer she didn't say anything. But then I have that sort of relationship with my RL friends that allow me to do that.

Coveredinweetabix · 22/11/2013 08:24

FD here and I can tell its going to be a struggle. I am starving. I woke up at 3am feeling hungry. I'm blaming the Shred! I didn't even go into the kitchen before leaving for work this morning & have a busy morning ahead of me so should be able to avoid temptation until lunchtime which is when I usually eat on a FD.
e good news is that I'm 10st8 for the first time since Feb '09 and that was due to not being able to eat in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

postmanpatscat · 22/11/2013 08:25

Morning all Smile Beanburger (no bun), chips and a Yorkie bar last night and still under my pre-holiday weight this morning. Maybe the 5 mile run before the pub meal did the trick!

spam I don't tell people generally...just nod and smile and say, yes, I eat more healthily and I go running a lot. Can't be bothered to explain 5:2. Well done on your loss!

Bssh well done on yours too!

I'm might be up for SWATH but am definitely giving NNN/NND a miss. I know there will be multiple boxes of chocolates coming my way at the end of term and I generally apply the principle of eating them as quickly as possible to get them out of my temptation range. Having teenagers in the house helps, except that they are both signed up to MFP and trying to lose weight (I am the lightest person in our house, but not the shortest).

postmanpatscat · 22/11/2013 08:26

Hooray! for skinny weetabix

BsshBossh · 22/11/2013 08:29

somewhere 78 lbs gone, 7 lbs to go. So in the grand scheme of things, 0.4 lbs is okay :)

BsshBossh · 22/11/2013 08:32

Well done weetabix!
Spam I never tell anyone unless I know they're doing it themselves. At the beginning I told a few people but got pissed off and rolly-eyed when they said, "Oh I could never starve a few times a week as I love food too much!" These people bore me!

BsshBossh · 22/11/2013 08:33

Spam well done on getting into the 11s.

Runlikeagirl · 22/11/2013 08:34

I will be snacking today. Sorry. I've had about 4 hours sleep, including a screamathon between 3-4am. Then ds woke everyone up at 5.30. I am also looking after friend's 4 year old all day, as well as my two.

Yesterday I looked after pregnant friends 2.5yr old. I need my head examined!

So I will try and stay healthy, but frankly I may need chocolate

MrsFlorrick · 22/11/2013 08:37

Betsy. To be fair the gruesome threesome I am referring to are actually wives of DHs friends. I always got on with them well so I considered them friends. Obv I was wrong about that.

Breadandwine. Thanks. Sorry. It just sort of all came out. My hips are sore this week and I have been having the super strong painkillers before bed. Blush Perhaps I should leave out the MNing when I have had those.

Everyone. Thanks Grin. I feel so spurred on with these threads. I hung out on the low carb threads but they were not supportive in that way, more in a help you analyse your intake kind of way.

I will get my shit together and post on the inspiration thread.

School run now. Bracing myself!

MrsFlorrick · 22/11/2013 08:38

Run. Brew And choc for you!!! Ugh. No sleep and wailing. You must be in bits!! You can fast another day. Just concentrate on getting through this one. Thanks

Runlikeagirl · 22/11/2013 08:42

Actually maybe I won't snack, I'll just have cake and gin for all my meals!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 22/11/2013 08:49

I told one RL friend and she was full of reasons why this WOE was bad, how I was heading for disaster and this was nothing short of sanctioned ED.

Since we have a mutual friend who has a diagnosed ED, I was quite shocked at this person's lack of understanding and support.

weighing almost 14stones with a BMI of 33 isn't in the same league as an ED, but it had massive health implications, getting out of breath doing up my shoes was a major embarrassment.

I had to do something about my weight, obesity is bad for our health. I've had an internal battle too, as holding very strong feminist views I'm highly aware of the false 'thin is beautiful' shit that women are force-fed. I didn't feel a lesser person for being fatter than your average, but I feel a better person now for taking control of a situation that was impacting on my life.

I'm seeing my family this afternoon. They are openly critical of anyone's weight, most female family members yo-yo diet with all manner of fads and potions.
I'm contemplating dressing in lots of clothes to hide my weight-loss, I can't be bothered to bat back all the cynicism that they will express, I mean, how can THIS be the one that works ;)

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 22/11/2013 08:51

And yesterday was my first LOFD and I feel amazing!
