Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi Dosey I'm planning on NND (no naughties december) as well so please join me on that! I've found that avoiding sugar on weekdays has been very effective in controlling cravings. 2 days of 7 is brilliant but I'm preferring 4/5 out of 7 and found that I've no desire to seek out more after I've had some at the weekend. Feeling in control and I like it :)

Replace the sugar with good stuff, cut out the crap.

And don't have crap in the house, makes it a whole lot harder to eat it!

somewherebecomingrain · 21/11/2013 17:17

betsey that is seriously inspiring.

somewherebecomingrain · 21/11/2013 17:27

Ps just had Thai barenaked noodles. About 300-350 cals. The barenaked noodles aren't great but they do trick you better than Zero ones. You can imagine you are eating real food, just rather slippery.

Tomorrow begins three whole days if... Carefully co trolled cal counting! But I always let myself go a bit mad on the day after a fast so CHOMP! I want to cut out sugar so will go for a natvia sweetened low carb ricotta/mascarpone/chocolate type thing I saw on Pinterest.

lermontova · 21/11/2013 17:44

What does everyone do about consecutive fast days? Now that the initial OMG must eat ALL the food NFD novelty has passed, I'm finding that if I have Monday and Thursday as FDs, then I'm not that bothered about eating and just skip breakfast and lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday as well. Last night looking at mfp I realised that I'd had 500 cals Monday and was looking at 700 Tues, 700 Weds and 500 Thurs so I ate an extra 800 to get closer to my TDEE out of a general sense of obligation but sort of resented doing so. Was this worth doing or should I just have left the fridge alone at 700?

I will just add though that this not being bothered is a new thing dating from when I implemented Tip's no snacking rule! Prior to that it was a struggle not to eat family packs of crisps while dinner was cooking.

Talkinpeace · 21/11/2013 17:54

lermontova
Glad that simple little rule is working well for you as well.
If you are not hungry, don't eat. But make sure you drink PLENTY
and make sure that you relax at last a couple of days as week as you do not want to lose too fast : its not sustainable

Rather stricter fast than I had planned today as I got to my meeting late and missed the coffees. That and my class at the gym was a killer. Looking forward to my tub of soup in an hour.
And have agreed with DCs and DH that Friday night supper will be fish and chips - just because!

stickysausages · 21/11/2013 18:01

I've just bought the 5:2 book & hope to get started in the new year! Am two stone overweight, lost 1.5 stones last year but it's crept back on.

Talkinpeace · 21/11/2013 18:05

stickysausages
start today.
there is no time like the present.

Dosey · 21/11/2013 19:16

Thanks for the message Betsy I will do my best for a NND but I have stocked up my Christmas treat box. This is another habit I need to stop, buying naughty food when I go shopping and deluding myself that is for the rest of the family.

I have had a good day today, no snacking, I have had a mince pie but that was my pudding after tea and that's me done for the day now.

I find cleaning my teeth after my tea stops me pigging out on an evening.

mimithemindfull · 21/11/2013 19:36

Would like to do this for health reasons. I have really bad IB and have tried everything else. Would love to hear from any fellow sufferers if 5.2 has worked for them. I don't need to losee weight though. Thanks.

stickysausages · 21/11/2013 20:05

talkinpeace

I know, I know....

But I need to be in the right frame of mind for it, and intend to do a complete overhaul in the new year!! Grin

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 21/11/2013 20:07

TIP no thermometers, just the thermostat. I always wear a jumper and socks in the house and have a blanket to hand to wrap round my feet if I am sitting for any time.

Good nfd today which included a mini kitkat :) perfect size.

I was planning to fast tomorrow but I am out on a course so the options will be less healthy. FD on sunday instead.

somewherebecomingrain · 21/11/2013 20:27

Hiya.

Coming in at about exactly 500 give or take a single left over crisp and a discarded strip of baby food. Not even hungry.

Only 9.5 hours till - boom - Project Eat. I'll tell you why 5:2 helps with the mind - because happiness becomes so simple, it's all about food.

notas love your NSV. Really ace.

I've had one today - another notch on the belt.

The next hurdle is firming up this slim but still not very shapely bod. I'm not sure when I can face that. I lug my huge baby around in the sling does that count as good exercise?

Well done all fasters.

Talkinpeace · 21/11/2013 20:27

mmimthemindfull
DH and I have been fasting since a year ago September.
He'd had irritable bowel problems for 13 years. They stopped within 2 weeks and have not come back, even when we have holiday weeks.

Helles
you can pick them up cheap at this time of year from garden centres. Could be useful to work out what is actually going on.

Am sitting here absolutely STUFFED. A pot of soup, two slices of toast, an apple and a bit of grated cheese. All up around 600 calories and I am oozing over my jeans!

eatriskier · 21/11/2013 20:38

notas lovely NSV

MrsF I tried to calculate mine but then realised that over the last 2 years I've only gained and then lost - the 5 stone 3 I lost doing 5:2. Truly brilliant though, well done. And definitely don't let MrF push you back towards biscuits.

run heheheheheheh at 'too many fannies' Grin

mimi I'm an IBS-D sufferer. I did go through a period where it went awful for a week or so, but it disappeared almost as soon as it came on. Other than that I've had no flare ups in the 7m I've been doing this, except for the week before last following a mad bread fest over the previous weekend…

Mini fast over for me now. I had mil's apple crumble for dessert and IKEA meatballs with mash for main (without the crumble and a couple less meatballs that would have easily come in under 500 cals too). My lovely DH brought me a bag of frozen ones, some jam and some sauce packets as I was up most of last night coughing. If I can just train him into picking up a nandos every now and again...

Coveredinweetabix · 21/11/2013 21:06

Moving and any lurkers - do start/stick to this WOE. It is so worth it. I was at soft play on Monday with my 4yo and for the first time in months went into the frame with her whilst my Mum looked after my 18mth old. I couldn't believe how easy it was to get around. I could fit through the tubes without wondering if I'd get stuck. I could walk across the ropes without wondering if it would bear my weight. It was wonderful. And I've also realised that I am much more willing to chase DD (her favourite game) as its easier and more comfortable. I've got dodgy knees so get the odd ache & twinge but I float rather than lumber.

Two successful FDs done this week and will do a third tomorrow. NFD today and I think I was actually below my TDEE which is rare for me (and explains why I'm losing so slowly). Also on day three of the Shred.

BsshBossh · 21/11/2013 21:13

FD over for me too. Sub-150 cals (just a cuppa soup and a Cox apple). Didn't actually need any food - could have made it a strict zero cal 36 hour fast - but I fancied some crunch in my mouth Grin.

Right, no breakfast tomorrow cause I want to enjoy every mouthful of my melted cheese and ?? (will decide at the cafe) panini tomorrow lunch time. Then Gorgonzola & broccoli with orecchiete pasta for dinner, no doubt followed by some sumptuous dessert DH will bring home from some lovely patisserie or other :)

Moving2fast · 21/11/2013 21:41

A small victory for me as I sat in the same room whilst my husband had fish and chips. If it wasn't for this thread and posting on it earlier I would have definitely had a 'sod it' moment and asked him to get me some as well.

ChocolatePudding · 21/11/2013 22:24

Well done Moving! You sound like a different person to the one posting earlier on this morning. It just goes to show how much these threads can help. And welcome to the thread Grin

MrsF amazing weight loss. I hadn't realised you had come so far. Have you posted on the inspiration tread yet?

Notas great NSV. I've not had any yet but would love to find my size 12 trousers become too loose instead of stretching tightly around my hips Blush

I'm loving Tip's 'say it as it is' approach. You are totally right about the snacking thing and its def one I shall work on it. It seems that most of you who have lost a lot of weight and are nearing or are at target have overcome the need to graze all day so it must be possible and a huge part of succeeding on this WOE.

Sorry I'm not very good at keeping track of who has reported what but enjoying reading all your posts. It really helps to keep me going. Especially as I've not actually admitted to DH what I'm doing. I think he'a a bit fed up of all my fads and would just roll his eyes at me.

Off to bed now. A fairly successful FD although I didn't actually count my calories for dinner. Just ate mainly the chicken bit of lcasserole with a small spoon of couscous and a few chunks of chocolate (yes that's right, I didn't scoff the whole bar!!!!) NSV?

Talkinpeace · 21/11/2013 22:33

Chocolatepudding
I'm not a fluffy person. I'm much better at kicking butts and supporting shuddering shoulders than being a shoulder to lean on.
Hence the habitual bluntness, but you all know I'm right Wink

You should tell your husband. Even if he has no weight to lose, the long term health benefits of Intermittent Fasting are such that the two of you can work together on this one.

Breadandwine · 21/11/2013 22:35

I broke my fast after 46 hours with the usual half a litre of stout, followed by a reasonable (side plate - not really filled) dinner of a 150g seitan cutlet with 5 potato wedges and broccoli. Followed by cake and ice cream. Then I had two squares of Lindt's Chilli chocolate - and that was it.

BigChoc I agree about the good feeling on a long fast. Smile That's why I shall try and persuade my wife that I should do one once a fortnight instead of once a month.

Somewhere why bother with those noodles? There are loads of recipes on the recipes thread that come in under 300 cals. Even my ragu and pasta recipe is less than 300.

Sticky I agree you have to be in the right frame of mind - however there is a school of thought that says that just one successful fast will put you in that mindset.

But if you don't want to start yet, why not begin now by just moving your breakfast back by an hour. Have some food to hand, but just see what happens. If that works OK, put it back by another hour. Before you know it you'll have cut out breakfast altogether and you'll be doing a 16:8!

Looking back through these threads, a common factor is just how easy posters have found this WOL - and how surprised they are that it is possible to miss a meal and not keel over! Grin

Erm…not sure how to put this, but I didn't think it was possible to have too many Fannies! [innocent face]

FannyBazaar · 21/11/2013 22:56

I will never forget being told by an American cabin crew member years ago that, you know you're getting old when your fanny starts to sag! Luckily I knew what he meant, got a shock at first though though Wink.

Hello fellow Fannies

MrsFlorrick · 21/11/2013 23:08

Eatriskier. Grin

Bssh. Enjoy the cheese fest. I love cheese too. Have some ear marked for Saturday night....

Chocolate. I don't really feel like I can post on the inspiration thread because most of my weightless actually came from other diets. Here's the list in order:

weight watchers (1/2 stone)
Jason vale juice diet (1 stone),
Dukan (over 3 stone)
then(falling off wagon and gaining two stone back Blush),
low carb (10 lbs),
calorie counting with low carb (1 stone)
and finally 5:2 (18lbs so far)

Phew. All that palaver and just a few lbs to go.

Dukan is hugely effective but if you fall off the wagon, you're stuffed and could well end up back in the biscuit tin. It's very strict on types of food you can eat. That's where the issue is. You may well be able to eat as much as you like of those foods. This means you're still stuffing your face and not dealing with why you're stuffing your face or your appetite/cravings.

Low carb has its uses but for me I could eat so much that I didn't lose. I was burning fat but it was the fat I was eating. Worked ok with calorie counting added but then I felt hungry and deprived. It did help with insulin production and teaching my body to burn fat. It also helped me recognise how addictive sugar and white carb is and how it isn't filling.

5:2 does deal with appetite and cravings. You learn self control and you learn to choose your treat. Ie you can't have all of them (the biscuits) but you can have one or two.

Gestational diabetes is a bitch. All the insulin resistance and insulin floating around made me find cravings and want to stuff food. Plus it stored fat like no tomorrow. Ugh. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Problem is that the fat insulin and cravings remain long after your blood sugar returns to normal and you're no longer technically have GD.

And the world is full of people who judge when a pregnant woman gets fat and gains hugely. The judgement I had to face from even close friends wasn't nice. It's similar to those who judge women who have CS births. Snippy comments and cats bum face. Angry

And yes I had two CS births too. So the judgement was positively free flowing by the time DS was born. Clearly by allowing myself to get so fat I was causing harm to my DC and I had clearly caused the GD, not the GD causing the weight gain. And I "only" BFd both of mine till 6 months. The horror eh!

But haha, I'm almost at goal weight and wearing my old wardrobe. None of the three worst judgeypants are even close!! Wink I'm having a small smirk at them on here as I can't in RL.

I still recall the friend I met after DD was born whose comment on my birth was: "so you didn't manage it then". She was pregnant at the time and you guessed it she ended up with a CS.

MrsFlorrick · 21/11/2013 23:15

Forgot to mention that despite "only" having lost 18lbs on 5:2 since August I have lost over a dress size. It's all that muscle fromJM workouts clearly Wink

B&W. Wow. Impressive. Not sure I could manage. I tried to stick to liquids yesterday but by dinner time I was sloshing in tea and water and felt queasy. May need some practise and work up to a liquid fast.

Perhaps a little mini goal will be to manage a liquid fast before Xmas..

rubbishfamily333 · 21/11/2013 23:22

Thank you all for the messages this morning, it really helps having you guys there when i'm wobbling Grin

cuckoo I have got a hoop but i never use it Blush my last flat was tiny and there was no space to hula hoop, I dont have that excuse anymore, but i tried it recently and it hurt using it (it is a weighted one) not sure if that is because I am bigger but I'm sure it never used to hurt like that.

well I managed a fast day, I may be slighlty over 500 cals, but I am still under 600 Smile but I do find it odd that I have lost around 6lbs and no inches. I'm not feeling put off though, as this is the only weightloss method that I have ever thought I could do long term.

Lossing weight normally leaves me with a dredded feeling. And I have lost weight and out it all back on before, but I am feelinggood about 5.2 Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 21/11/2013 23:23

Betsy You are obviously lovin' it to be planning NND, so you mean right through Christmas and New Year hols ?

I may restrict junk permanently to 2 days per week
Shock
but I want the flexibility to decide which days, because my WOE has to fit my life.
Anyway, that'll be my version of NND, which fits with IFUC and SWATH.
We NNNers may have (nearly) learnt junk discipline, a valuable life skill.

cuckoo? Are you up for it or are you really a chicken ?
