Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello all,
Fast day for me here and I can feel early afternoon pangs hitting hard to I'm going to go and watch last night's telly that I recorded, whilst hooping! That'll keep me a) busy and b) warm Grin

Harissa chicken, red onion and roasted squash for my dinner. Then cosy night in front of the fire. Fish n chips planned for Friday tea and so I want to get a good FD in today Smile

MrsFlorrick · 21/11/2013 14:10

TIP. Sorry my garbled ramblings have confused!! Not quite at 21 yet!!

I have 6 to 7 lbs to go (depends on which BMI calculator I use - I have one for tough love and one for handholding GrinGrin).

But the 5 lbs I gained last week over eating have all gone one two FDs. Grin

So still another few to go. I do need to knuckle down and not bounce up and down the last few lbs without ever getting to goal.

Non FD here. Planning mini fast tomorrow. I will no doubt over eat on Saturday beyond TDEE so a mini fast first and FD Sunday.

Have eaten mindfully today and healthily too. Am having a small treat of skinny mocha before I pick up
DC from school shortly.

They will both be shattered so I am planning something easy for their dinner. I have some naice beef sausages. Poss with baked potato and beans. However I may let them have chips and beans with it if they are good (and don't whine all the way home).

Moving2fast · 21/11/2013 14:11

Thank you all again for your amazing words and encouragement. I'll have a proper read through tonight when the kids are in bed.

MrsF thank you for your post, it does help to know others have been through or going through the same. Sometimes being at home with the children can be a lonely place even though you are rushed off your feet.

I do actually have the shred DVD and a hula hoop, I just need to actually use them.

Fast day going ok, will come in at just over 500 cals but that's ok. Have a weekend of drinks and meals out but rather than use it as an excuse to binge, I've learnt that I can make some sensible choices e.g skip breakfast to ensure that I don't go completely mad. I have also been using MFP and putting in everything I eat and drink and it has helped me to see where I am going wrong.

I am so glad I decided to stop lurking and start posting, I'm definitely in a much more positive frame of mind now. Thank you all again.

ChocolatePudding · 21/11/2013 14:12

OMG what have u all been talking about? Must read thread asap. First chance for a breather today whilst waiting for a train. At least it means today's FD is going well.

Can't believe how untired I am today considering that I only got into bed at 2.30am. Seems the only time I can knuckle down and get admin/marketing work done is at night when I know I won't get any interruptions.

Downside is that it'll catch up with me tomorrow afternoon when I'm supposed to be teaching. I will have to out on my best stifled yawns. Eeeek

ChocolatePudding · 21/11/2013 14:13

*put not out

MrsFlorrick · 21/11/2013 14:42

Movingtoofast. Grin You have the shred. You have the power. Seriously.

Pick a time of day which works well. Ie when DC are least whiny and needy and preferably need a snack. That's your 20mins!! You can do it.

I made it a habit. And it works. My results are probably less dramatic and quick than some achieve but its working/ has worked.

Dosey · 21/11/2013 14:50

Hi there just popping in to say hello, I have been lurking and delurking since the programme in August 2012 and I can honestly say this woe is about the only thing that works for me. I do it more for health reasons and to stay at a steady weight and also so I can enjoy treats with my family at the weekend.

I do have a question, was does NNN mean.

Thank you.

NotAsTired · 21/11/2013 14:59

2nd fd of the week here.

Today, I caught sight of myself in a full length mirror in the toilets at work and did a double take. I'm so SLIM. I never realised it. I think I hyper-focus so much on the individual parts that I don't like about myself (ie my big belly), that I actually had not considered the I don't want to say the bigger whole picture.

I have also been wearing more or less the same clothes as when I was bigger, (basically jegging/leggings and jumpers) because i am dirt poor to buy new ones and so had not noticed that much difference because everything is stretchy. Two days ago I went put on a a pair of proper trousers I bought in the summer when I had lost some weight. Size 10. They are so big now that I can actually get them off me without undoing the button, although it was a squeeze.

I think my brain has finally catching up. Smile

BsshBossh · 21/11/2013 15:03

NotAsTired those both are NSVs. Well done!
Dosey welcome. Did you lose weight on 5:2 or, as you say, have used it to stay steady throughout?

toffeesponge · 21/11/2013 15:04

Need to go to school now but just wanted to say well done to MrsF for her 5lb loss after 2 FDs. Now tell me how to do it!!! Grin.

MrsFlorrick · 21/11/2013 15:12

Toffee. As others (TIP, Bssh, BB and bigchocfrenzy) told me earlier this week, it wasn't lard, it was water weight and some lard. It was only because of my over eating last week.

Sadly it doesn't generally happen as fast as that. Grin

Breadandwine · 21/11/2013 15:32

Wow, some amazing stuff on here - well done everyone. And welcome to the new posters - there's always room on these threads!

It's been 42 hours now, since I ate - I'll probably break the fast with my usual pre-dinner glass of stout at around 5pm. Just have to be careful I don't eat too much tonight - I remember the first time I did one of these, then I overate madly and really suffered for about 5-6 hours afterwards.

I have to say I find these LOFs really easy - it's only my 3rd or 4th, but, in a weird way I find them very enjoyable. It certainly frees up the day not having to think about what you're going to eat. And I shall certainly enjoy my NFDs!

My laptop/charger has just packed up so I'm now on the old desktop. Been told that a new charger for my laptop can be as much as £150! [eeek!]

And I should wear a hat in this cold weather. My 10-year-old granddaughter cut my hair over the weekend - my son usually does it - and I couldn't remember whether my son (who wasn't around) used a grade one comb on the clippers or a grade 2. We opted for a grade one, and that's pretty severe, I have to say!

Ah, well! My dad used to say the difference between a bad haircut and a good one is about a week. Might take a bit longer for me, this time! Grin

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 21/11/2013 15:44

Today's fast is going so well I might go for my first ever LOFD

I've no chance of getting anywhere near food from now until 7pm, so why not. . .

BigChocFrenzy · 21/11/2013 15:45

Welcome Dosey

NNN = No Naughties November
Betsy, Cuckoo and I, plus a few others who have joined, stopped drinking alcohol or sweet junk (ice cream, cake, chox, bix, etc) for November, except from Friday evening to Sunday.
Note: this is not low carb, because no limit on fruit or healthy carbs.

Some of us are continuing with this until the Christmas parties.

IFUC = IF until Christmas,
meaning we don't stop IF until Christmas; in fact, some of us will continue through Christmas, just no FD on 25 Dec !

SWATH = Same Weight After the Holidays
So weigh yourself the morning of your 1st Xmas party, then on 2nd Jan.

The more the merrier for all of the above !

postmanpatscat · 21/11/2013 15:51

Some great results on here, especially MrsF and NotasTired As always, plenty of proof that this WOE really works.

I'm doing a weird sort of fast/mini fast/16:8 combo - nothing to eat til 12.30, then half a carton of soup and an apple so could have been a FD, but DP phoned and wants to eat out tonight so has become more of a 16:8 now hence the two bourbons I snaffled from the staff room biccy tin

B&W I've just used very similar words to someone I know with a shorter than expected haircut! Well done on your lengthy, liquid fast. I agree that it frees up loads of time as long as you're not still shopping/cooking/clearing up for others while you're fasting.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/11/2013 15:57

Hi B&W Nice to hear your take on fasts.
I'm tending to do longish zero-cal fasts as well, simpler than planning 500 cals around work and evening training..

A couple of times a week I do 36 hrs+, including 1-2 intensive fasted training sessions.

I've been reading about the science and health benefits of fasting for a day or two, very interesting. I'm really looking forward to the Varady book for more details on this, especially wrt women, different ages, BMIs etc. However, I feel fine so far.

I find I go a bit Zen towards the end of the fast, a peaceful, empty feeling. Also, to be practical / TMI, it does give the tum a chance to rest and completely empty itself !

BigChocFrenzy · 21/11/2013 16:00

Hi to the reincarnated Run, who has dumped her fanny
Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 21/11/2013 16:06

Notas You are slim, slim, slim ! Repeat after me
That's an NSV
Flowers

BsshBossh · 21/11/2013 16:10

B&W I remember the day you really suffered after breaking your long fast badly. I learned some valuable lessons from it and was glad you shared your experience. We all really need to be mindful and careful about what and how much food we break our fasts with.

BennetGirl I tend to do my own verion of LOF - it's not strictly liquid only as I have a cuppa soup (the purist in me only counts black coffee, water and herb tea as strict liquid only) and a small 70 cal Cox's apple. But my FDs these days are generally sub-150 cals. I started doing it this way when I realised I wasn't actually hungry for a 500 cal meal by the time I reached evening.

BetsyBell · 21/11/2013 16:28

Flippin' 'Eck MrsF SEVEN AND A HALF STONE!!!! WOW

Just having a sneaky lie down (with laptop) in my almost finished beautiful new bedroom. It's lovely. Kinda wishing the mountain of laundry I've dumped on the floor was not messing with the view of my newly painted walls… I may have to put the damn stuff away to improve things.

Maybe in a minute :)

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 21/11/2013 16:38

Oooo Betsy any chance of a photo of new bedroom?

duckyfuzz · 21/11/2013 16:44

wowowowowowow you lot can talk!

some fab weight losses going on around here, MrsF and Notas Envy I need to get my act together!

I'm feeling much better today, the pain has gone without any obvious escaping of anything that might have caused it!

under 500 so far today (may go over a bit later on though) and had FD yesterday so will fast from tonight until tea time tomorrow for a kick start to the weekend. I actually look forward to fasting, so long as I plan it, is that weird?

MrsFlorrick · 21/11/2013 16:49

Betsy. So far I have not really looked it like that.

I put on 6 stone whilst pregnant (both times Hmm gestational diabetes). And lost it almost twice.

However this time around I had a blip last autumn when DS was 14 months where I had lost almost 4 stone. I then ate biscuits until new year, where I had put two stone back on again Confused

And now I am 6 or 7 lbs from goal. So I am 5.5 stone lighter than when DS was born (this excludes the actual baby or anything else this was the from two weeks after he was born Blush).

But with the extra two stone of biscuit weight from last autumn it works to a total of 7.5 stone.

It sounds impressive. And I was impressively fat. Being tall with a small frame I do not carry it well.

I am also ashamed of myself. Or rather how I was. Not now. A bit proud.

I must mention that not all of this was 5:2 diet. I've been on 5:2 since August this year so a short time only.

The rest was various diets I tried. Inc Dukan and low carb.

I am finding 5:2 the simplest. It's the fact there is no special food or recipes or things to buy or bizarre rules.

I've learnt so much from it.

I can have biscuits and chocolate in the cupboards without scoffing them.

I currently have naice Waitrose choc and short bread which has been in there for weeks.

I no longer feel the need to eat all of it in one go or gorge on stuff.

And ThanksThanksThanks to everyone on here. You all help. You kept me away from the biscuits on Monday. Impressive.

Dosey · 21/11/2013 16:51

Thank you for the replies, I am going to join in NNN even though we are nearly out of November. I haven't lost weight on 5:2 to be honest I don't need to but my diet is awful, I binge eat on sugar so I use this woe of eating as a way to control my sugar cravings, even if its only for two days a week. I love my meals and I love to enjoy them and for me that means no snacking in between meals which can be challenging. So I am up for trying to cut out snacks and saving treats for weekends.

Thanks for the welcome.

BetsyBell · 21/11/2013 16:52

Maybe when I've got a proper bed and curtains! Bssh Still sporting the kids curtains as I haven't decided on what I want yet. Bed arriving in 9 days Grin

It would sort of look like this if I had a much nicer house! The colour looks lovely with my pale wood furniture.
