Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I might try the no snacking. But I found when I did it before I got nowhere near my TDEE. I do eat my lunch at work split between break and lunch as otherwise I dont have enough time.

But its a day off today with kids so I'll try no snacking. Evenings are my worst.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 21/11/2013 07:43

Morning! FD here today I think.

I love this Tardis I'm staying at a friends house on Saturday for a Doctor Who party! I am taking cake with me.

cuckoo I hope you have planned a suitably evil way to wake him up.

schrodingers just go to bed early to avoid evening snacking. Works and you have loads of energy the next day. I found it helped me to break the habit.

Not2bObvious · 21/11/2013 08:19

Marking my place - badddd behaviour this wk

Moving2fast · 21/11/2013 08:45

On my 2nd fast day this week but had over 3000 calories on Tuesday and a weekend of meals out, I am not too confident that I'll lose anything this week.

Am getting really down now about my weight and have raided my wardrobe to find something to wear and still can't fit in to anything pre-pregnancy. I look a mess everyday as I am wearing the same 3 outfits rotated and they are all cheap clothes as I don't want to spend alot on clothes at this size.

I know this isn't a quick fix but after nearly a month on this WOE I've lost about 3lbs. Only another 50lbs to go until I'm a healthy weight (although its been years since I was anywhere near that weight!).

Sorry for the moaning, am just struggling at the moment and can't bore my husband with it anymore! And to make it even worse, my 3 year old has just asked me why I'm always shouting at him....am sitting here trying not to cry!

Think I need a kick up the bum and told to get on with it!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 21/11/2013 08:55

What size are you, Moving?

I've got some size 16 things I'd be happy to send, they aren't designer but Next and White Stuff.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 21/11/2013 08:55

Movingtoofast...... You are moving too slow!!

JUST GET ON WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!

Moving2fast · 21/11/2013 08:58

Thank you for the offer, it's really nice of you but I'm currently a size 18, was 16 pre this last pregnancy and a 14 before having kids!

I used to think I was so fat when I was a size 14 but now dream of being that size again. I know what to do and all the answers...I just can't seem to do it!

Thanks again for the offer though, it is appreciated.

BetsyBell · 21/11/2013 08:59

Hey Moving2fast You can do it! And you've managed to lose some weight despite having a blowout meals all over the place - that's why this WOE works.

Go and see the Inspiration thread (link in OP) for an inspiring kick up the bum!

Schrodinger Why not do the no snacking thing on weekdays and then boost up your tdee at weekends? It's definitely worth looking at intake as a weekly thing rather than daily - we don't need to eat the same amount everyday after all - we know that already!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 21/11/2013 09:00

Did that help?.....

(tissues and rub on back smilie)

Nothing like your kids to set off the waterworks eh?!

Could your current feelings by any chance be hormonal??? Always like to eliminate that one. Are you recording tdee? Drinking lots of water? Pregnant? Shock

Moving2fast · 21/11/2013 09:01

Ha ha cuckoo, thanks! I am moving way too bloody slow, you're right. I am at the stage now where I'm thinking 'sod it' and giving up as there seems no point.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 21/11/2013 09:04

moving :) keep reading and posting, 3lbs lost is more than a bag of sugar!

Have you taken up any exercise along with fasting?

That will help you tone up, for me the NSVs have been more motivational than the weight loss.

Moving2fast · 21/11/2013 09:04

Right, have had my 'poor me' moment....going to suck it up and just get on with it! Eating more isnt a solution so need to carry on eating less and keep motivated.

I think it could be hormonal and lack of sleep for the past 6 months....I'm definitely not pregnant. Chance would be a fine thing Grin.

BetsyBell · 21/11/2013 09:05

bigchoc I'm amused that you're having no trouble keeping up with NNN but are eating industrial quantities of dates! I'm not allowed dates in the house during NNN, no self control with them, especially with some pecans too

I don't burn off thousands of calories at the gym though!

Right off to burn off some fast day calories humping furniture around - final bit of house renovation has finished and I'm going to start putting everything back Grin

Thanks again for listening to me, it does help and means a lot to me!

rubbishfamily333 · 21/11/2013 09:12

Well fd here today, I don't fancy fasting as its icy cold and my office is freezing ConfusedConfused not looking forward to it today!

So this will be the last fast this week and this will be three weeks I've fasted.

I have gone from 10.10 to 10.4.4 which I'm happy with but I don't seem to have lost any inches atall Hmm actually i think I have lost one inch from under my breasts! That insn't where I wanted to loose it, my hips are 40 inches ShockShock why couldn't it come off there? I'm concerned that my boob are gonna go and I'll be left with lots of belly and hips.

I'm thinking exercise is the only way to stop my boobs disappearing I hate it when that happens! But I feel stuck for time at the moment! Do you think doing a set number of press ups during the day will save my breasts?

BetsyBell · 21/11/2013 09:15

moving2fast keep posting here, I'm sure there are plenty of us here (me included) who no way would have kept on with this without the support of these threads. Moaning is fine :)

You know this will work for you as you've already lost a bunch of weight on it, so keep at it. You are tired and it will feel harder but as your body gets used to the days without much food you may well find yourself feeling more energised, a little peppier than usual.

Do you know your TDEE and are you logging calories and stuff? It's worth doing for a while to get a sense of how much food is right for your current weight. It's easy to lose sight of how much is right as we live in a snacking-based culture rather than meals-around-a-table culture.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 21/11/2013 09:16

That's better Moving! Giving up would just mean that all that time spent suffering was for nothing! Maybe you're just a slow starter and launched straight into plateau, but will soon come out other side and weight will start flying off.

On the subject of moving...... I am pleased to announce a successful unload this morning. Think BC 's olive oil suggestion might have quite literally scared the crap out of me Shock sorry tmi! Either that or the sprout stir fry I had for dinner last night can be thanked.

So yesterday was a successful fd. Funny really, I didn't miss any last week and was only two days behind schedule this wk but it felt like a lifetime since I had completed one! Grin

Just goes to show, when you're not in right frame of my - it can make a world of difference to this woe.

Good luck all fasters today! I am either doing another one today or a -1000 mini followed by a fd tmw. Really trying to get as close to 4:3 as poss.

Am seriously considering a liquid only day once a week too after comment yesterday (sorry can't remember who) that their friend(?) noticed the post liquid losses tended to stay off.

BetsyBell · 21/11/2013 09:18

rubbish Keep at it and it will come off in the right places! That's a brilliant result for 3 weeks work!

OP posts:
SchrodingersFanny · 21/11/2013 09:18

Moving2fast Keep going, 3lbs is great! I have some size 16 jeans and trousers as well if you want them. Just pm me.

I know that feeling though, I refused to buy myself any more clothes in big sizes. I've still said I can't do a big shop for new stuff until I'm under 11stone.

I think I will do no snacking on week days. I am getting bad again for picking, grabbing a handful of cereal etc. I do try to go to bed early, last night dd (16months) didn't go to sleep until 10! Her sleep is terrible, up half the night etc.

And when I get on top of this marking....

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 21/11/2013 09:18

Rubbish, we all lose weight from different areas at different rates, the same way we put it on in different places, but there is no such thing as 'good' fat that should be preserved I'm afraid :-D

Exercise will help you replace lost fat with muscle though, and things like press ups and crunches will tone and flatten flabby areas, giving the impression of weight loss.

SchrodingersFanny · 21/11/2013 09:19

I'm going to do a liquid once a week too, at least until I start to get going on weight loss again.

BsshBossh · 21/11/2013 09:23

Checking in for second FD of the week.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 21/11/2013 09:25

Rubbish that is an awesome loss!

Have you thought about (if haven't already got) purchasing a hula hoop to pummel the life out of waist and hips to loosen up stubborn lumps?

Apparently they work wonders. I am yet to purchase mine but will perhaps start this week. I tend to run a few weeks behind when I say I'm going to do something!! Got bit of list mounting now. Shock

Right coffee aka breakfast is over! Time to crack on. See you lot later at kettle Grin

BsshBossh · 21/11/2013 09:26

Cuckoo please tell me more about the sprout stirfry: recipe, calories... I love sprouts and fancy some tonight.

BeCool · 21/11/2013 10:03

Moving2fast I'm a size 18 too - was creeping up towards 20 to be honest. This is my 3rd week - and it was much easier this week then the first 2.

I've decided to weigh myself just monthly - probably on the first of every month, as I don't want the highs and lows of seeing loss or gains.

I've decided this is a WOL for me and even if I don't lose on it, if I'm not gaining (I gained steadily all of this year) then I'm doing the right thing. But I have faith that I will lose & even it it is just a tiny bit every month, I'm winning (as would you be).
