Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Cuckoo Congratulation on squatting yesterday; it is the best exercise for the large muscle group in your bum and thighs. It firms them up and also helps retain bone.
Smile
Make sure you are squatting properly - it shouldn't cause back pain.

-Do not use any extra weights, just bodyweight, until your form is correct and back is pain-free
-Lean back on your heels, so that weight is on them, not on your toes.
-Bring your arms forward
-Keep your back straight, but angled slightly forward, not vertical. This should happen naturally, with your arms in front of you.

  • Just go down as far as you can without knee pain. If you feel OK, then try to get your thighs parallel to the floor.

Remember the basic principle of a squat:
It is like having a pee on a public loo: you get your bum down low and pointing to the rear, but not actually touching the seat ^^

Best wishes to your poor cheeks !
Xmas Grin ^^

postmanpatscat - This is the brownie book I have.

The Wakame Miso Soup I have contains soya and fish too.

runlikeagirl Sorry you are poorly. I have no clue what labrynthitis is but hope you are better soon.

I am fasting today. Feel a bit peckish but in a daft way I am enjoying feeling it as it reminds me I am in control of eating and not the other way around.

Been writing all my Christmas cards this morning and have sent some parcels. I am wrapping presents as I go and plan to write a food shopping list for Christmas week as the kids break up on the 17th so need to get everything done before then.

Runlikeagirl · 02/12/2013 12:51

Its an inner ear infection. So it makes you feel constantly dizzy, nauseous and spaces out all the time. And balance. I can't balance properly.

BsshBossh · 02/12/2013 13:23

The whole household (including me) is home with colds. But I'm still FDing today. Let's see how I go.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 02/12/2013 14:54

Just nipped to the shop as was making banana cake and only one egg. That is all ready to bake in the oven once I am back after school. Felt hungry but have stuck with it until making up the kids after school snack and discovered there are 9 mini gingerbread men in a small bag. 2 kids so had 1 as I was not having the argument about who got the extra one. I am sure the calories won't count though and I am still fasting. Plan on having fish for dinner.

devoncreamtea · 02/12/2013 15:54

Doing first fast today! So far nothing to eat except rosehip tea, did some accidental exercise when missed bus and had to walk 3 miles to collect children (ran the last bit too - made it on time!!) with my chunky chap in the buggy and all the shopping (whoops!) planning to have a spicy soup for tea followed by a bath and early night in an attempt to ward off evening munchies. Feel fine, bit snackish feeling - like I could def go for something yummy if it appeared - but not ravenous. Good luck to all the other fasters today!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 02/12/2013 16:05

Sounds like you're doing well, devon

If you do find your hunger rising, have a pint of water, that will make your stomach think it's full and you'll be fine.

Running with a buggy is hard work, but extra cals will have dropped with that, it will only do you good :)

Talkinpeace · 02/12/2013 16:11

Interesting how many more people are coming round to the plan of
eat nothing all day - just drink
and then have a filling supper

sweetie I do not eat breakfast during the week - have not done for over 20 years so I'm always effectively doing 16:8 Monday to Friday.

I do not know how many of you lurked on the size 10 bunfight at the weekend, but here is another incentive to keep fasting and get our insulin systems working for us
www.diabetes.co.uk/type3-diabetes.html

BetsyJingleBells · 02/12/2013 16:30

Poorly thread today - get well soon you lurgied lot

Fast day today has been rooibosh tea, 1 proper black coffee, miso soup, water, instant coffee, chamomile tea.

Am about to get started on soup making - 2 types - a thick blended 'carrot' soup for the kids (actually red lentil, butternut squash, ginger and leek - maybe a carrot too) and a chunky veg one that I like - leeks, butternut squash, fennel, ginger, garlic and what ever else is lurking in the veg drawer. Might pop a bit of chicken in there too as, unusually, there's some leftover from the roast yesterday. A portion of my veg soup works out as just over 100 cals so nice minimal day.

Frankly, if I didn't have to cook for 3 others I probably wouldn't bother at all.

BetsyJingleBells · 02/12/2013 16:31

tip I saw the beginning of that size 10 thread and thought 'oh this is going to go well…' - I take it you got shouted down again then? Grin

BetsyJingleBells · 02/12/2013 16:34

Wow tip - great link, makes total sense doesn't it but what a revelation.

BsshBossh · 02/12/2013 16:45

The only thing getting me through today's fast is the thought that if I fail today I'll only have to do it over tomorrow!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 02/12/2013 17:06

I came on to post that I had failed due to eating 2 teaspoonful of M&S key lime pie and still plan to have tea but now I am thinking I could throw the rest in the bin (use by today) or give to the kids (eek). I really want to salvage this as a FD and I did so well until now. Blinking kids tea times are tricky for me. I keep drinking water as I go though..

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 02/12/2013 17:11

Key lime pie now on the kid's plates. 1/2 NSV Smile. Just have to resist the fresh pasta now!

Talkinpeace · 02/12/2013 17:18

Betsy
they tried, but I just resort to posting links to people like NICE and NIH and the big charities ....
the latter part of the thread - after I got bored and hid it - has several people seeing the light Smile

BsshBossh · 02/12/2013 18:11

Link to that thread anyone?
