Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

OI HARMONY
STOP SNACKING AND STAY WITHIN YOUR TDEE Grin
seriously, log your food into MFP and make sure you cut out the snacks
then play with 16:8 and the occasional liquid only fast
confuse your system and it will start to move again

PoshPaula · 01/12/2013 22:47

Hi everyone I also need a kick. I have gained a bit, which I put down to eating too much on NFD's and I really want to get back on track.

BsshBossh · 01/12/2013 22:51

Baloostika my "sub 150" etc days can vary in content eg mug miso soup + one apple or one bowl steamed veg... I don't take milk in drinks on FDs but if I did I'd count that.

BsshBossh · 01/12/2013 22:55

Ref. kick starting another drop ... want to get back on track - just do it guys. Stay focused, stay disciplined and stick with the programme!

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 22:58

Thanks, Toffee, I am copying and saving these recipes for the hols (when I have time to clean my kitchen ceiling afterwards)
^^

I have no culinary judgement, so I must check: when I add extras like cheese to the dry ingredients, is about ¼ by volume of the dry stuff ok ?
(I've already learned caution with chillis in recipes, don't worry)

Baloostika
For LFD, you can keep to your tea and coffee, but try to low carb, keeping added sugar to a minimum.

My LFDs: cocoa, veg juice and herbal tea with Stevia. Today I also had 2 Atkins RTD shakes. Alternative low carb shakes: Weider BodyShaper or mix your own from 80% whey protein powder.

Just stay sub-500, i.e total cals for the FD < 500.

If you're in the USA, it's bed-time now for us in the UK, but b&w often joins in an hour or two, so he can give useful advice.
Good luck with your LFD tomorrow.

sweetiepie1979 · 01/12/2013 23:25

Talkinpeace looking at your fast day plan from earlier, is that a fast followed by 16.8 or is that just one fast? I'm still bot sure what a 16.8 is.
I've eaten and drank what I liked this
weekend and fast day tomorrow haven't eaten since. 6 this evening. Ive got both dc all day tomorrow and dc1 bot very well so I will be in all day. That will be hard fir me. Wish be luck please x

annielewis · 01/12/2013 23:44

Hi all, just wanted to check in, can't keep up with the posts as been really busy weekend!

Have done a 500 today as totally overate yesterday, love this WOE to be ab;e to be so flexible!

Also - scale victory - am down to 11.3 this morning, amazing after bingy day yesterday and that was the first time I weighed since holiday. Was 11.5 pre holiday! This is the lowest I;ve been on this WOE so far - literally cannot believe my eyes!

Am aiming for 10 stone something by christmas day. Am now 9lb downfrom start weight!

Good luck all Monday fasters - think I'll do tues this week.

Sweetiepie don't beat yourself up love - try and do a 16:8 tomorrow if a full on fast is too much - or a sub 1000 mini fast. Being stuck at home with sick kiddies is rough! (my kids are bit older than yours but not much..) No one benefits from a hungry tetchy mummy! Cut yourself some slack and do it on a more convenient day if needed! If you do push on through it then huge good luck! Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/12/2013 23:47

Hi Baloostika, Eyeofharmony, StickyToffeeSausageSpongeMuffin [tchwink]

PoshPaula - Get a bloody move in will ya! Put the cake down. Here is the track. Get back on it!

Well I have to say Black Forest muffins sound the biz to me. Got some more recipes to go back and look at by looks of things too, so thanks to those who shared Cake

Have squatted today. Had to be careful because back is genuinely bit dodge at mo. Was waiting for period pains to go as always get back ache with that, so wasn't sure how much was plain old back ache. Turns out, a fair bit!

This always happens just before Christmas so I have to be extra careful now, dd is on a promise for some seriously silly mummy dancing over the festive period after last yrs was cancelled due to back! We've got those playstation games you do on camera - all singing, all dancing. Can't wait to look a numpty whilst murdering a few songs [tchhmm]

Anyway! Got bum ache from squats already! Both cheeks are feeling like they've been stabbed with a baseball bat!

All this name changing and Christmas smileys must surely mean its time to decorate our names??!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 02/12/2013 00:01

Or move on PoshP! You can indeed move in if prefer. The move part being key [tchgrin]

Sweetie 16:8 is where a 24 hr period is split into 16 hrs of fasting, and then an 8 hr window in which to fit your daily eating needs.

Example: stop eating 7pm one evening. Count 16 hours forward (during this is fasting period). That takes you to 11a.m when your 8 hr eating period begins. During this time you eat normally ie when hungry. But after 8 hours is up - 7pm - you close the kitchen and start next 16 hr fast period, if continuing.

You can choose whatever times of day suit. Mine would be 10pm til 2pm fast. Then 2pm til 10pm eat.

The idea is to get benefits of a mini fasting period everyday. Also by doing this it can remove some snacking etc as effectively have less eating hours available. The wrong way to do it would be to gorge like mad during eat hrs. Same rules as always apply - only eat when hungry, and for heaven sake dear woman...... NO BLOODY SNACKING! Don't you know Faster Tipmas is watching!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 02/12/2013 00:02

I believe 18:6 is also popular.

Baloostika · 02/12/2013 07:51

BsshBossh does that mean u eat only 150 calls or 500-150=350?

Baloostika · 02/12/2013 07:55

Good morning all.
Fast daying today, wed and Friday by His grace. And I want to make them all LOF. How many calories is advisable when doing a LOF, I don't want to do them ignorantly.
Best of luck to all fosters.

BsshBossh · 02/12/2013 08:02

Baloos 150 cals total, sometimes more, sometimes much less. I've been 5:2ing since February and am rarely genuinely hungry on FDs now. Sometimes I eat nothing at all.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 02/12/2013 08:03

BCF - really you add what you want. The impact is just whether you can then fit all the mixture into the muffin cases and how strong you want the flavour. Also depends what cheese you use of course. Philadelphia will have a different taste to a big piece of extra mature cheddar or stilton. If you want bigger muffins you can fill the mixture to the top but they will be enormous Grin.

I am fasting today. Last ate at 10pm last night and will try not to eat until dinner tonight with DH.

BsshBossh · 02/12/2013 08:05

Baloos if you're LOFing for 24 hours eg 8pm Sunday to 8pm tonight then eat up to 500 cals at the end of the 24 hours. If you're LOFing for 36 hours eg 8pm Sunday to 8am Tuesday then you can eat normally on Tuesday as that's a non-fast day.

postmanpatscat · 02/12/2013 08:16

Morning all!

Well done on your loss annie

Some yummy recipes going on here - I want that brownie book toffee, what's it called?

Anyone got any miso soup in the cupboard? I tried to buy some on Saturday but it said 'contains fish' on the label, is that normal? I don't eat fish! There was nothing on the ingredients list that said fish but then I didn't know what most of it was Smile

Baloostika · 02/12/2013 08:43

Thanks BCF. I'll just stick to my herbal teas all day and a 750mls mixed fruit smoothie which is not much calorie wise.
Am so glad I met u all though late. I got this site through one of my friends on MFP, can't really remember who exactly but am grateful.
My name on MFP is the same as on here so anyone can friend me.

BetsyBell · 02/12/2013 08:53

PPC get yourself some miso paste to make your own soups with (can literally just add a teaspoon to hot water for quick salty drink fix way) -ingredients list on my organic Clearspring jar: Whole soya beans, cultured brown rice, sea salt, water.

Baloostika · 02/12/2013 08:54

Wow Bsss, that's phenomenal!
Nothing d whole day?
I did a 48hrs fast last week but I had veg juice and a fruit smoothie of less than 500 within that period.
Am sure I can build up to that ( I like trying things) , lol.

BetsyJingleBells · 02/12/2013 09:06

Christmassyfied myself [tchsmile]

Fast day today. Inadvertent mini fast of sorts yesterday as I forgot to eat until the roast was ready! I more than made up for it so I doubt my calories were any lower than normal - once I'd revealed that the sticky toffee pudding was choc full of dates the kids went right off it so there was more for me. Stupid kids. And I just ruined DS1s favourite pudding for him so thats not so great. I'll hide the dates better next time…

But, obviously it's a fast day today and I'll be back on NND for the rest of the week.

Just started adding festive spices to my morning coffee, it's rather nice although better with milk (and a little hazelnut syrup! Weekend treat only of course...)

BetsyJingleBells · 02/12/2013 09:06

Oh they've changed the xmas smiley codes since yesterday

Xmas Blush
BetsyJingleBells · 02/12/2013 09:13

Right, I feel like I should get on this LOF bandwagon! Having got my jar of miso paste out to look at the ingredients I think I'll brew some up for my packed lunch - tsp of paste plus a sprinkle of sea salad, maybe a little ginger and garlic too…

Ooh there's a woodpecker on my apple tree Grin

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 02/12/2013 09:21

Morning everyone

LOF for me again today, I really find it easier to have no food than a little food

I really did indulge yesterday, ate out at lunchtime incl pudding, than had jacket potato and prawn salad in the evening followed by baklava and wine!

Planning to break today's fast at around the 24hr mark, and then with 100cals soup

BetsyJingleBells · 02/12/2013 09:22

Woodpecker and a chaffinch, lovely. Cats are clearly asleep inside thankfully, murderous beasts that they are.

Right, so I'm going to do LOF for 24 hours (starting 5pm yesterday) and then have some chunky veg soup for dinner, probably an apple too - that'll be about 150 calories until I have a meal tomorrow.

sweetiepie1979 · 02/12/2013 09:29

Thing everyone thanks for the advice above. Thread moving fast and internet playing up so don't have the names. Xxx ok fast day had herbal tea First thing and now having s coffee with milk but that's fine I'll count it in. Othello be liquids all day and at 5 ill be having left over veg chilli with a pitta bread while rest of family tuck iI to my lamb tagine. I really enjoyed my food this
weekend but lookingnforward to weigh in tomorrow morning would hope to be either 10.13 again or less.
Dd1 sick and peppa pig on loop for 2 days- is that bad?
Good luck all fasters today hope I make it! No! I will make it!
