Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

StrawberryToffee Be reassured: The chance of even the fussiest eater going hungry chez Toffee seems remote.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 01/12/2013 18:57

Not my recipe though, I got it from my brownie recipe book.

Doesn't take much to confuse me, but I like toffees and sausages - not as much as chocolate, though.
Goodness, don't we talk a lot about food !
Grin
My LFD is nearly over. As an experiment, like the Mattson IF study, I had 2 x Atkins RTD shakes, plus a cocoa and veg juice. So, very low carb. My total will be about 370 cals. No problems.
If anyone else wants to try this, I recommend the Coffee Royale.

Looking forward to my NFDs

EarSlaps · 01/12/2013 20:19

Are there some toffee sausage brownie recipes in that book? Grin

I am now not sure my life will be complete until I make those pb brownies.

Rather full of ear slaps now- yum. They will be my breakfast too, and i put eight of them in the freezer. Think I'm going to make them on Friday for the school fete- prove overnight then roll and bake Saturday morning. I loved bashing up the cardamom seeds, what a smell!

I do admire all you clever cooks. This is a gifted thread.
Envy
My whole place still stinks of burnt popcorn from yesterday and that was microwave in-a-bag. Not exactly a complicated process, but I buggered it.
Blush
Part of anything cooked on the hob gets scraped off there, as well as from the ceiling.
Re the main oven: it is old, so unfortunately not self-cleaning and life is to short to scrub it. So I'll have a new one built in. Is that the definitive example of culinary laziness and incompetence ?

Talkinpeace · 01/12/2013 20:40

Baloostika
Welcome
it is always heartening to have new people join who have digested all the waffle we type and made it work for them

oooh, waffles !

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 20:42

Phew, toffee I hadn't realised there were so many types of brownie in the world. Clever old toff.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 01/12/2013 20:51

No, not me. Just got them from my book. Not my book I wrote though.

I do invent muffin flavours though and my favourite was red pepper, sweet corn and feta cheese. Olive and cheddar is nice too as is raspberry.

duckyfuzz · 01/12/2013 20:57

I made my first ever brownies last weekend toffee - didn't realise there were so many options! Whit choc and rasp appeals, have made similar as muffins

I love toffees and sausages, both more than chocolate (I am a non choc loving freak)

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 01/12/2013 21:15

Thinking about muffins with small pieces of sausage inside with melted toffee on top....

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 21:26

ooh, Toff Care to share your cheese and olive muffin recipe ?
Also, would the red pepper and feta work with corn (not a corn fan) ?
Er, I don't want the one for sausage with toffee topping.

Ducky You don't like chocolate much ?
^^

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 01/12/2013 21:36

Erm, not sure I want to share if you are rejecting me. Well, my sausage and toffee topped muffin Sad.

Basic Muffin Recipe

9oz / 250g plain flour
3 teaspoons / 15ml baking powder
1/2 teaspoon / 2.5 ml salt (I never add salt and they always work).
3oz / 85g white granulated sugar (I often do half and it still works).
1 egg
8 fl oz / 240 ml milk
3 fl oz / 90ml corn oil or 3 oz butter, melted.

Prepare the muffin tins with liners. Preheat oven to 375-400F or 190-200C or Gas mark 5-6.

In a large bowl, stir well with a fork (or sift it) flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in the sugar.

In a different bowl, beat the egg with a fork. Stir in the milk followed by the oil or melted butter.

Add cheese and olives (I rarely weigh, what ever you want to put in) to the dry mix bowl.

Pour all of the liquid ingredients into the dry mixture. Stir until just combined, should only take 30 seconds. The batter will be lumpy but all flour should be mixed in.

Fill the muffin cases to 3.4 full and bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned and they spring back when you touch them. I recommend you leave them in the tins for at least 5-10 minutes as they get incredibly hot and I have been burnt numerous times when taking them out too soon.

Red pepper and cheese alone would be fine. You can really put anything you like once you have made up the basic muffin recipe. I have done bacon and onion with chive butter. Faffing with the butter wasn't worth the effort though was very nice.

Berries and chocolate is nice too.

Baloostika · 01/12/2013 21:39

I'm having a fd tomorrow and weds and will try to do the Jillian Michaels thing tues and Thursday which should set me up for a weekend of festivities.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 01/12/2013 22:21

I am fasting tomorrow too. Will keep busy as loads to do.

EarSlaps · 01/12/2013 22:30

Mmmm, brownies. I think you could do chocolate and cardamom brownies (just bash up some seeds and add to dark choc brownies). That would be lovely.

TheEyeofHarmony · 01/12/2013 22:37

Hi everyone, I started this WOE back in February and posted on the threads then sorry I haven't been able to keep up with you all.

Could I just ask for a big kick up the arse to keep going with this please? Haven't lost for months now and feeling really despondent about it all but want to try and keep going. Any tips on kick starting another drop?
