Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Dosey - twinmama says NNN/D made her want to eat more of the junk not less so be aware it can have the 'diet' effect of 'can't have it therefore want it NOW'!

I find I can manage it Monday to Thursday as I know I'm allowed to snarf a bit of cake in the staff room on a Friday (should there happen to be any) and eat puddings/ drink booze on the weekend. I'm finding 4 days off seems to mean I don't crave it and can be moderate (if I want to be) on the weekend.

Over the holidays I'm not sure what I'll do but will try and keep it up where I can - maybe instead of fasting I'll make sure I have occasional days where I do NND (no sugar & no booze in my case)

I'm absolutely certain I'll be doing NNJ though - it really suits me. Good for the purse too.

Morning all Smile

Was going to go secret Christmas shopping but DH isn't taking the kids out for long enough so they have all gone out and I am wandering about thinking what to make for our roast and for pudding. I have this annoying habit of not being able to stop myself baking - hence the peanut butter brownies made at short notice on Friday and the kids didn't like them - as clearly yogurts or jellies are not proper food Hmm.

BetsyBell · 01/12/2013 10:36

Christmas smileys! [tchgrin]

toffeesponge - freeze the brownies or send them to me - then you'll have to make a concerted effort to eat them rather than have them accidentally fly into your mouth when you're unawares (as brownies and other baked goods are well known for doing).

Mind you, I did that with a batch of chelsea buns last christmas - cut them into pieces first as I was planning an epic bread and butter pudding with them. I discovered they were perfectly nibbleable even when frozen [tchblush]

I'm making this sticky toffee pudding though with less sugar and more dates.

toffeesponge · 01/12/2013 10:54

I would have sent them to you if they weren't 2 days old. I am trying to think of something I could turn them in to. Once, I was left with chocolate muffins so I made an impromptu trifle base with them and everyone was very happy. The muffins were a little past their best to eat as a cake but fine in the trifle. The brownies were a bit salty for the kids which came from the peanut butter. I have vanilla prunes, wonder if they would work as an alternative to dates Confused.

Morning All

Haven't had a chance to ketchup with thread yet.

I have the wurst hangover. Ever.

Great night. All bit of blur. Need to fill in the missing links.

Got invited to a pattie and broke out my best dance moves.

Was voted weiner of the Sexiest Sausage competition.

It was a challenge, but accompanied by that gorgeous pair of bangers I was on a roll. Our rivals just couldn't cut the mustard.

Phew! Stick a fork in me - I AM DONE!

Keep Fasting People! [tchgrin]

toffeesponge · 01/12/2013 12:08

[tchshock] it is all much with people taking over my sausage [tchsad].

Talkinpeace · 01/12/2013 12:59

you could always be a strawberry toffee sponge and then we'd know you were you !

I'm much too idle and never change this name - but then some friends call me TiP on the phone!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/12/2013 13:36

Sounds like your sausage has become a bit of a diva eh Toffee?!

Better get your peanut butter brownies in the freezer before they get on tinternet!

Tell us more about peanut butter brownies?? (Slobber) Did you create recipe yourself or can I find it online somewhere?? I'm only one in this house who likes PB [tchshock] so wouldn't really be fair to make them....... (sneaky face)..... or would it.......?

I have been googling Yule Logs this weekend. Had some shop bought for breakfast today (well it was lunchtime!) and decided homemade would taste much nicer. Am trying to decided between ganache filling, fresh cream, or nutella, then the usual ganache on outside.

Am also going to make a gingerbread house this year with dd.

I would LOVE to hear everyone's favourite/staple Chrimbo recipes for some inspiration. Homemade or shop bought, doesn't matter. Sweet, savoury, dinner, pudding, nibbles whatever. I want it all (big greedy face).

C'mon you lot! Play fair and share your fare! [tchwink]

BsshBossh · 01/12/2013 13:42

Hi all. It's been a wonderfully indulgent foodie weekend so far. Heaven! Salted caramel brownies, mac 'n' cheese with bacon & spinach, Portuguese natas, macadamia nut brittle Haagen Dazs ice cream and croque monsieur have all featured. No binging, no over-stuffing myself, just enjoying every mouthful to intense satisfaction. I love it that I can enjoy food as much at 131 lbs as at 210 lbs :)

Lovely aromas are emanating from the kitchen right now: DH has started making the Christmas cake.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 13:47

RealSausage I love your pic !
Maybe you should shave your legs and trim your sausage a bit.

NNN/NND targets sugary junk (and alcohol).
We do not need any added sugar and it is definitely bad for us, in the amounts most of us now consume.

NNN reduced both the frequency and total amount of my sweet junk consumption. NNN/NND is training my self-control.
However, for some people, restriction may cause binging. Do what suits you.

Maybe more to everyone's taste:

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 13:53

Oh Bssh, that all sounds soooo yum.
I love Haagen Daz, especially their ice cream parlours in a few (very lucky) towns - HD chocolate & coffee ice scoops with milk choc sauce and toasted almonds ....
Envy
Stop this sabotage; I'm FDing today !

BsshBossh · 01/12/2013 14:07

Whoops, sorry BigChoc. Still, unless you're fasting tomorrow, you can eat it tomorrow Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 14:20

For Cuckoo and all other choc lovers, a small healthy treat:

Cavalier Anti-oxidant choc bar is dark choc with tiny pieces of freeze-dried berries, supposedly to keep their anti-oxidants high.
Only 80 cals for a 20g bar.

Curiously, that 20g is quite satisfying and I don't need a 2nd bar.
Shock
Occasionally on FDs, I long for a qwik choc taste and a (5g) bite is enough then.

Breadandwine · 01/12/2013 14:21

Cuckoo here's my version of a chocolate log. Pics down at the foot of the post.

Dead easy and cheap. And I'm sure you can do a neater one than I can!

BetsyBell · 01/12/2013 14:37

Hmm, cuckoo, aside from the big roast and many trimmings, I've asked the kids what they're favourite things to eat would be over the festive times and so far we have a bid for American style pancakes with a choice of bacon and maple syrup, fresh berries and whipped cream - a newly christened Christmas eve tradition est.2012; Apple charlotte, Sticky toffee pudding (experimenting with the recipe today). I made some amazing ginger and & cranberry florentines last year which could bear a repeat. Cinnamon snails are on the boxing day breakfast menu.

Hello everybody and happy new month to us all. I pray that this last month of the year will bring wit it all d blessings God intended for us all, weightloss inclusive.
I've been a lurker for so long and I have reaped tremendously from all d discussions.
I've been on a plateau for like a year but this past six weeks I can proudly say I've lost 5 solid kgs of fat.
I do 4:3 most times and try to stay within my TDEE but there are days I don't.
Last week all my fasts were LOF and they were good and bearable. I did this after reading wot others had to say about it.
I have a tendency of overdoing things and so I am treading carefully wit this WOL so I don't lose d weight too fast as I would love to.
So many of u have really inspired me and I have great respect for u.
Good and nice people on here, jolly good fellas wit good spirits, humorous etc I just love u guys.
People like BCF, B nd W, Toffee, TIP, Eatriskier, Sweet, Cuckoo, Biscuit, etc i really cant remember all ur names, lol, d list of good people is endless but I love u all.
Sorry for the long post.

duckyfuzz · 01/12/2013 16:36

Cuckoo - Nigella's Buche de Noël is gorgeous.

Little opportunity to eat much before 3pm here, but luckily I'd made boeuf bourgignonne in preparation so have just enjoyed that, with fine wine to accompany! Think totm may be imminent (a week early) which accounts for feeling of lardiness

EarSlaps · 01/12/2013 17:09

Batch of ear slaps made- totally delicious! Not sure what I did wrong but the dough was very sloppy so I had to add quite a bit of extra flour so I could knead it. They still turned out really well.

Hence no fast day tomorrow so I can have cinnamon buns for breakfast, lunch and tea Grin.

Welcome Baloostika, sounds like you're doing really well on this WOL.

Baloostika · 01/12/2013 17:17

Thank u Earslaps, I think so too (smile), it's so easy an convenient.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 17:37

Welcome, Baloostika . Losing 5kg in 6 weeks is fast.

EarSlaps Are you committing cannabolism ? Well, if you say your species tastes good.... Sounds like you won't have the Monday blues.
[tchgrin]
Bssh Tomorrow is an NFD, but NND means I can't eat HaagenDaz tomorrow. Phew, dodged a calorie bomb. I'll enjoy rice pud instead.
Funnily enough on NNN / NND, I find a particular Naughty Urge may vanish by the weekend (but I'll indulge in something else then)
I'm thinking how to avoid the cheesy / chips / pasta parts of my Frenzies.

Toffee Those pnut brownies I caught on my iPad were yum. What an ungrateful bunch you cook for.
Would you adopt me, pretty please
Grin

Dosey · 01/12/2013 17:37

Hi there and thank you for the replies. A going to go for NND Monday to Friday, and if I do happen fail in the week I will tag a NND day onto my weekend. This is going to be such a challenge since there are so many treats around our house already

StrawberryToffeeSpongeOWNSTheS · 01/12/2013 18:27

Peanut Butter Brownies

Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4.

100g dark chocolate
175g unsalted butter, diced
3 large eggs
200g light muscovado sugar
120g plain flour
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Peanut mixture -

180g smooth peanut butter
50g caster sugar
1 tablespoon plain flour
5 tablespoons milk (I forgot this!!)
2 tablespoons unsalted roasted peanuts (didn't use as had none.)

23cm square brownie tin or similar, greased and base lined.
Makes 16.

Break up the chocolate and put it in a heatproof bowl with the butter. Set the bowl over a pan of steaming water and melt gently, stirring frequently. Do not let the base of the bowl touch the water. Remove the bowl from the pan and set aside until needed.

Break the eggs into a mixing bowl and use a hand-held electric mixer to beat well. Add the sugar and whisk until the mixture is very thick and mousse-like in texture.

Whisk in the melted chocolate mixture. Sift the flour and cocoa directly onto the mixture and mix until thoroughly combined. Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin, spread evenly and level the surface.

Put all the ingredients for the peanut mixture into a separate bowl and mix well. Drop teaspoons of this mixture, evenly spaced, onto the chocolate mixture. Use the end of a chopstick or a teaspoon handle to marble or swirl both mixtures. Scatter the peanuts over the top.

Bake in a preheated oven for about 30 minutes until just firm. Leave to cool in the tin before removing and cutting into 16 pieces. Store in an airtight container and eat within 5 days.

ENJOY!

Off to read rest of thread now [tchgrin].

StrawberryToffeeSpongeOWNSTheS · 01/12/2013 18:30

BCF - I love to cook and feed everyone so come on over [tchgrin]. I have a fear of people being hungry in my house.

StrawberryToffeeSpongeOWNSTheS · 01/12/2013 18:33

It is the Sausage I own since I can't get my whole name in

BigChocFrenzy · 01/12/2013 18:47

StrawberryToffee Maybe you could be ToffeeOwnsTheSausage, a nice catchy name.
Great brownie recipe, you earned the applause after your twirl.
