Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Feeling fat this morning, due to overindulgence last night, so will try 16:8 today and tomorrow then proper FD Monday. Good luck to everyone over the dangerous weekend!

rubbishfamily333 · 30/11/2013 09:46

Morning all

Ducky - I also over indulged last night, I had takeaway and a bottle of wine Shock and I'm going out for drinks tonight.

So I've never really done 16.8 before are you all doing it to ensure you eat less calories? Or is it to do with insulin levels and burning more calories?

BigChocFrenzy · 30/11/2013 11:18

Rubbish
Some of us use 16:8 for maintenance or a break from 5:2, which can last a single day or several months. For others, 16:8 is their WOE.

16:8 is for those who prefer a daily fast of 16hrs, with a decent meal or meals. For weight loss, these usually total 1000-TDEE cals within an 8 hr period.

The fasts are shorter, hence daily to achieve health benefits.

Like any form of IF, it only leads to weight loss if there is a weekly calorie deficit. Restricting the eating period to 8 hrs can help limit calories, but is no guarantee. To achieve a deficit, you can cycle calories, so have on different days say 1000, 1500, 2000 etc

BigChocFrenzy · 30/11/2013 11:21

To maintain on 16:8, one obviously eats TDEE on average for the 8 hrs.

toffeesponge · 30/11/2013 13:12

I managed 14.5 hours which isn't bad considering I had forgotten I was doing 16:8 HmmGrin.

duckyfuzz · 30/11/2013 13:25

managed 15hrs 45 mins, I think that'll do! bread and soup for lunch, not sure what we're having tonight though...

BigChocFrenzy · 30/11/2013 13:39

Last day of NNN today. NND starts tomorrow !
Smile
Cuckoo Start melting the remaining 344 sausages from your carcass !
What are you doing, lounging about when you should be sweating it off ?
^^
Wink
Out with the B&J, in with the situps, pressups and dumbells !
Do you cycle ? Your DD is old enough to accompany (and thrash) you if there are off-road tracks.
Or a trampoline for 2 ?
Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 30/11/2013 13:45

Ducky,ToffeeSausage ^^
You both had good attempts at 16:8,so your bods had that break from food this weekend.

SouthEast We all have tough weeks when we Frenzy or lose the plot, but your FD today sets you on track again.
Enjoy your special breakfast tomorrow.

I've enjoyed my delicious NFD meals today (not much over TDEE) and lazy Kindling hrs, but I have just closed the kitchen - must let my food settle before smacking the men around again training at the gym.

toffeesponge · 30/11/2013 15:12

I am making a very healthy fish pie for tea with three types of fish so will enjoy that later.

Talkinpeace · 30/11/2013 15:47

had so much curry last night could not face croissants for breakfast
so will have them tomorrow - light supper tonight !

sweetiepie1979 · 30/11/2013 15:49

Hi all iI had my fast yesterday it was going well all day to about 5 and then I started picking I think basically I picked at about 500 calories worth so that's ok. But picking makes the fast harder so I'll have to rethink that. Either have full 500 calorie meal with dc and husband at 5.30 or just do a liquid fast it's got to be all or nothing for me. I feel lime the more I eat the hungrier I am.
Weighed myself this morning and hooray I'm out of the 11s! Just! I'm 10 .13 goit to stay like that now until
Monday which is next fast day. Those who have asked me if I'm breast feeding, Dint worry I'm not.
We'll done everyone else. X

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/11/2013 16:30

If anyone needs a fd push to make it through to bedtime: boak

Talkinpeace · 30/11/2013 17:55

sweetie
NO SNACKING / PICKING * EVER EVER EVER
seriously, its a habit you have to get out of for the rest of your life.
eat at meal times
if fasting have a drink instead
but outside mealtimes the kitchen is closed

slim people either graze snacks or have meals
never ever both
meals are better for you and more sociable

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 30/11/2013 18:42

Haha! BigChoc I cannot tell a lie - I would probably benefit from some regular bellowing!

But, trampolining???... Have you read none of my posts woman?!?!...

....trampolining is a one way ticket to GrownWomanInPuddleOfOwnPeeVille!....

Trampoline+gravity+post child bladder = disaaaaaaaster darling!

I can have completely empty bladder and merely brush the edge of the trampoline with my leg and it's like the release hatch to my bladder is instantly activated. We have a 10ft one in garden. I'm practically an expert on the subject! [knowledgeble face]

You are, of course right though. I do need to melt the lard from my sausagey body. I have my plan - squats, hula, your upper body sets, plus run/walk. I have just been lazy. I have also been a bit back achey from all the diy, so have been avoiding aggravating.

But I think in the spirit of NND on an IFUC basis, along with morale boost from this weeks loss, I will start tmw.

I WILL START TOMORROW. I WILL START TOMORROW.

I will report to you (salutes drill sergeant BC) by end of tmw with day 1 results. No excuses. I need to get on it. I am usually fine once started, it's just the starting part!

But a lot can be achieved in the next 3 weeks so why the buggery not!!

duckyfuzz · 30/11/2013 19:18

Feeling really lardy today but haven't over eaten by any means. I think I need to melt some sausages off too, sit-ups, running, shredding - whatever I can fit in!

I reckon I have two weeks for max loss before Christmas hits. Will aim to lose another 2-4lbs in that time (although tom may have other ideas) then maintain until jan 2nd. Does that sound doable?

Hope the rest of you are getting on ok today

toffeesponge · 30/11/2013 19:37

I keep reading about the stuff your face day. I have been waiting until I fancied it to really indulge. I am still waiting HmmConfusedGrin[NSV].

duckyfuzz · 30/11/2013 19:38

Envy toffeesausage

BigChocFrenzy · 30/11/2013 23:00

After evening spin, we went out and had huge kebab, chips and salad. Stayed talking and had a pizza. Well, I was about TDEE before we went out ......
Still, had a great time and it is Saturday night.
Smile
I planned Friday and Sunday FDs to limit my weekend to 1 Frenzy day.
So, I'll probably be the only Sunday faster.
Hmm
Cuckoo Sorry, as a non-mum, I hadn't thought it through about the trampoline effect on your bits of that nameless contraption.
Do whatever doesn't cause flooded avian syndrome, but burn those sausages before adding Christmas ones around your turkey.
Smile

Breadandwine · 30/11/2013 23:01

Earslaps - please don't take it personally, but every time I see the phrase I'm reminded of 'a clip behind the ear' administered in a long ago (I'd like to think) age. In my case it was very much a clip on the ear. Sad

Thanks for your exercise review, BCF. I don't know if it's coincidence or what, but I had two PBs in my regular aerobic exercise this morning. Smile

About using different flours instead of wheat flour - that's a whole different ball game. There's no reason why you can't substitute some of the flours you mention for some wheat flour - although I would caution going above 50% in the first instance.

No, I've not got into sprouted wheat flours, yet, although they are becoming more popular. My HFS doesn't stock any ATM.

postmanpatscat · 30/11/2013 23:03

Well done toffee on resetting your appetite and sweetie on your weight loss!

Breadandwine · 30/11/2013 23:08

Just posted a request on the BF part of Mumsnet about my daughter's problems trying to BF our 13-week-old grandson.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Breadandwine · 01/12/2013 02:06

Thanks, Cuckoo and MrsF, for your support on the other thread!

And thanks, too, to you, BCF for your inspiring post earlier - which caused me to look again at my leftover third of a pizza and several curried wedges intended for lunch tomorrow. These are now but a pleasant memory! Grin

As will shortly be the oven chips and slices of tomato I pulled out of the freezer and fried, since the hunger monster was well and truly awake by now. Plus the slice of bread this repast obviously requires. And, of course, the wine monster had to be invited to the feast! (Getting on for half a bottle, ATM, and showing no signs of slowing down!)

Normally I'd say I've had my breakfast the night before, then not eat until lunchtime - but we do like our porridge on a Sunday morn. (We tell my daughter we're just getting our oats - little does she know! Grin)

Dosey · 01/12/2013 07:35

Morning everybody could somebody remind me of the rules of NND I think I need to give it a go. This week
I have had two very good fasts days but my non fast days have been terrible.

breadandwine there's nothing like having your oats on a Sunday morning Wink

somewherebecomingrain · 01/12/2013 08:53

Thanks helles v helpful. Particularly the link to the weetabix story.

Have had epic Saturday indulgence - cheese and freshly baked bread, 10-15 quality street, crisps and guacamole, roast dinner, 5-8 quality street, pear and frangipani tart with Greek yoghurt. Tummy groaning.

Pub lunch planned. Need to skip breakfast. Weetabix story - job done.

breasandwine will check out your thread.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 01/12/2013 09:38

Morning All

Dosey NND : No Naughties December

Essentially you make your own rules specific to your habits.

But the gist of it when the idea was born, was to cut out the sugary, empty cal crap from our diets as much as poss. This means biscuits, choc, cakes, sweets, sweet junk in general.
The idea, so as not to be extreme to point of unsustainable was to do this Mon-Thurs (leaving wknds free) or to pick those days better suited to you.

We have all tweaked our own to cover our particular vices, and to suit diaries properly.

Mine is Mon-Thurs no sugary crap. (Savoury only Grin)
I'm also trying to avoid booze full stop.

This will continue until School hols start on 21st probably.

There are also a couple of other challenges but I'll let Drill Sergeant Nut Butter aka BigChoc do you in fill you in on those!

It's all part of becoming more aware of how sugar has crept its way into our diets and has a firm grip. Yet it is a poison we just don't need. So this is an attempt to rid our bodies of it at least half of the time!

Get on board and have a twiddle with the dials until it suits you.
