Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm scared at how your mind works tip!

Right, back to real life. School run and friend round- eek 2 x four year old boys!!

somewherebecomingrain · 29/11/2013 15:06

Me too eat - the meatballs anyway. I usually sanctimoniously have no desert while my dp does.

Having a desert whilst being slimmest in 7 years.

Anyway have fallen into bad eating today. Nibbling, carby, not quite a frenzy but that's prob only cause I haven't counted the cals on Mfp! Am going to let it go as I have a sociable stressful weekend coming up. Let it all go. Then Monday a fast awaits to sort it all out. Have prepped dp that I'll be having an early night and will go for a LOF.

toffee Smile

sparkly glad I didn't frighten you off. You can talk it all through on here - great place to work things out re eating.

annielewis · 29/11/2013 15:53

Postmanpatscat Thanks to jet lag my kids were up all night and then crashed out and have woken up grumpy little buggers - on the plus side the last thing I have felt like doing is eating so I am here and fasting - how are you doing??

Man its cold here - got the heating on, not sure if its because we are all tired or what - it wasn't that warm in San Francisco.

Hope everyone else is doing well today, BCF are you fasting or frenzying today???? Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2013 16:13

Congratulations to the thinnest Toffee since 2005 !
Also for fighting off that challenger RealToffeeSausage
Of course you belong with all of us (({})); we are the 5:2 family
Flowers

We support each other through thick and thin, united in our daftness and our fastness. We shall have that sausage tomorrow

And Betsy must order motivational Arse Mirrors for us all.

Well done,*Bssh: 78.8 lbs of fat thrown out (how many sausages is that ??) , only 6.2 lb to go.

I'm here annie...made it this far on three cups of mint tea and a lick of my little finger which had a smear of icing down one side! We are doing 'afternoon tea with Santa' after school today and there are cakes everywhere I look. I am now in hiding with a pile of marking. Hope your little ones get their body clocks reset soon. Well done on making it this far!

TIP I have added those earmuffs to my xmas list...good timing, thanks, DP was just asking me yesterday what I would like! Grin

postmanpatscat · 29/11/2013 16:17

So distracted by sausages that I forgot to say well done to rubbish!

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2013 16:20

Postman,Annie: I think 5:2 has just about taught me to limit Frenzies to 1 per week.
Hmm
Today, I'm FDing and plan zo be sub-300.
I've had:

  • a 180-cal "healthy porridge" of flaxmeal and oatbran mixed with boiling water
  • a 12-cal tin of bouillon, which I drank the lazy way - with a straw direct from the tin.
I plan a splash this evening:
  • 40 cal cocoa
  • 20 cal veg juice
Smile How are you getting on now ?
BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2013 16:23

Well done, Rubbish You are steadily getting where you want to be, in all respects.

toffeesponge · 29/11/2013 17:12

I currently have MrToffee working out how many sausages make 78.8lbs Grin.

toffeesponge · 29/11/2013 17:13

The answer is 624 Grin.

annielewis · 29/11/2013 17:58

Betsy I once lived in a flat with a full length mirror in the shower!!! It was glued to the wall and as I was renting I couldn't do much about it! Certainly a daily reminder of exactly how porridge like your arse can be! Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2013 18:19

Buggering Tuberculosis !

No, I haven't got it (I hope !) , but our director has just Emailed all of us that an external engineer (from somewhere exotic) was rushed to hospital today with TB. So the names of all those who have directly worked with him will be given to the regional health authority, who will probably order lung X-rays. Fortunately I am not on the list , but some colleagues certainly are.

But this is a large open-plan building. So, of course, any of us could have brushed against him, touched something he did, especially in kitchen area - sink, kettle, fridge etc.

Our boss was trying to be reassuring in his Email that you need to have direct contact, such as shaking hands, rather than catching it in the air.I must look that up.
Hmm
He also adds that people with healthy immune systems normally don't catch it. That young man looked a strong enough lad. Again
Hmm
I estimate my risk as very, very low if my boss is not telling porkies. So, no need for X-ray radiation, with its own risks.

Just leaving work now, I've had quite enough this week.

toffeesponge · 29/11/2013 18:37

.

rubbishfamily333 · 29/11/2013 18:49

Thanks or the well dones Grin I just wish I had lost 2lbs instead of 1!

somewherebecomingrain · 29/11/2013 18:50

Blimey bigchoc that's too close for comfort. I'm sure you will be fine iirc tb need a lot of proximity to spread - it isn't infectious like flu for example. But brrrr.

whimsicalname · 29/11/2013 18:58

Just nipping in to say hello, well done Friday Fasters - nearly done now - and happy weekends to you all.

I had a NSV of sorts yesterday, in that it was Thanksgiving here, and we all went to a colleague of my husband's house. SO MUCH FOOD. And I only had one pre lunch nibble, 2 glasses of wine and one plate of main course and one plate of pudding. Not even big plates.

And I didn't even feel deprived. Really hoping i'm now learning portion control!

BsshBossh · 29/11/2013 19:09

Woohoo so I've lost 624 sausages Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2013 19:45

Thanks for the pnut brownies, Toffee, they sound totally yum.
^^
I'll save them for tomorrow as I am FDing today
Grin
Bssh well done on losing 624 sausages. Wow that's even more impressive than lb. Maybe in future when each of us achieves the desired weight, we should post "# sausages lost" on the Inspirations thread.
Hmm
Good NSV whimsical, such impressive restraint, surrounded by tempting yummies.

I'm confident the million chocolate antioxidants from previous Frenzies will protect me against developing TB.
Smile

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/11/2013 20:14

Oh BigChoc - horrible news!!

Hope your poor colleague is ok!

Those germs would have to be pretty stupid to take on the BCF's immune system!

Hope you stay nice and safe and germ free Thanks

Think for shock - extra doses of choc.

For increased germ resistance - extra everything else!!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/11/2013 20:35

Am loving the sausages lost! 624!!!

Well done Bsshh - although, do you feel kind of .. 'Is that it??' As in you don't get much bang (er) for your buck?

..... although it would be interesting to get a visual of it.

A mountain of 624 sausages Hmm and we could take a pic of you (or photoshop) next to it like the Pyramids, pointing, saying 'I lost that!' with big sparkly toothed smile.

......

...TIP! (bellowing BCF gym stylie).... Do you think you could find a picture of 624 sausages on the wonderweb????!

BetsyBell · 29/11/2013 21:01

Is the BCG vacc not effective for life then? Yikes BCF

Annie That's horrible - I suppose at least it would have steamed up quickly! No one should be forced to look at their own (or anyone else's) jiggly bits first thing in the morning!

Talking of which, I'll be setting up my etsy shop "Scary Arse Mirrors" shortly after Christmas should anyone need scaring into doing squats after the festivities!

pile of sausages (scroll down)

toffeesponge · 29/11/2013 21:06
