Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

BetsyBell · 29/11/2013 10:46

Bssh was totally thinking the same thing! definitely making that happen Grin

Uh oh. Home briefly between work things and managed to snarf down another butter-laden bagel (did I mention I'd been thinking about those damn cinnamon bagels all day yesterday?) and now a load of nuts and raisins.

I'm thirsty! Not hungry! Stop eating and start drinking woman!

There, that's me told

Absolutely re sausage.

eat glad you feeling better x

BsshBossh · 29/11/2013 10:55

NFD Friday for me today. Bowl of muesli and a sesame bagel slathered in fullfat (love this WOE!) Philly and butter for breakfast; chicken/spinach curry and rice for lunch is planned; DH is bringing back fresh tuna steaks for dinner with salad; DD has a bake sale at her school too so today I will snack :)

somewherebecomingrain · 29/11/2013 11:21

I have just had ikea meatballs and daim cake. Blush

BsshBossh · 29/11/2013 12:04

somewhere why the Blush face, is it an FD for you today?

EarSlaps · 29/11/2013 12:26

BTW, I hate the term 'Earslaps'! It's an unpretty name for something that can be quite beautiful!

Were you talking about me B+W Grin? I love the name- it's because the cinnamon rolls look like squashed ears (or that is what I was told anyway). Just need to do my ocado order now so I can get making. Going to make mince pies on Sunday, we're going to wear our Primark Christmas jumpers and put up the tree.

Ikea food somewhere- yum! I went on Wednesday but had gravadlax before the Daim cake, the mustard sauce is delicious.

Well done to all the losers! I'm still maintaining at between 9st2 and 9st4 (BMI 21) without too much effort. My body fat is dropping too- on my scales (which I think overstate it vs other methods of measuring) I've gone from 36% in July to 25% now. I now have 4 items of size 8 clothes that fit from various shops too!

duckyfuzz · 29/11/2013 12:51

happy friday everyone!

Some fab losers on here well done toffee, bssh, somewhere and others I've missed - and maintainers too!

Another smidge down this morning, so exactly 10st13 today - since then have had muesli for breakfast and 3 slices of toast for lunch - but have been out shopping this morning so feeling good at resisting coffee and cake.

toffeesponge · 29/11/2013 13:01

Sparklyboots - you can do it. I am so pleased I have lost weight on the 5:2 plan but tbh it is a bigger win that I am no longer scared of food. You will be able to do it, we are all with you, and you will feel amazing when you do.

BigChocFrenzy - all I can say is Grin. I hope you enjoyed your feast!

Cuckoo - Well done on your 2lbs off!!

Somewhere - I really did Grin at you loving my sausage victory. Well done at seeing 10s!! I would love too by Christmas but don't think it is possible.

BsshBossh - Shock and Shock at sausage and maybe toffeesponge being in a thread title. .

And [shock and Grin at BetsyBell agreeing.

I am in Shock. Busy morning, writing wills, bit of shopping, panic call from DS1, home for lunch. Made yummy sandwich and grabbed a can of coke from the fridge and still took it even though I could hear TIP in my head saying something about fizzy drinks are not good and as I went to sit down I remembered how good I felt to achieve a fast and wanted to feel "clean" so put the coke back and poured some water instead Grin.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/11/2013 13:35

Bloody hell!! Stand up everyone and give that woman a clap!!!

Well done Toffee!!

...... and to think it all started with one little sausage. Now today it's fizzy drinks... what will tmw bring?? ......

He deserves a name surely?... Hmm

Thanks sausage! - you are inspiring a whole thread!.... We will all think of Sausage now when our porky mitts head for the unnecessaries.

I hereby dub this.......

*Flippin Fantastic Fasty Friday!! Happy Weekend everybody!

I have just loaded up on goodies and have decided to avoid snacking, I will have it all as meals instead! Nutrition what???.....

Just for you

bigchocfrenzy
Over flexible hips - mainly a problem in 'competitive' styles like Ashtanga and Bikram but indeed, a lady at my gym carries on doing straddle forward folds while pregnant and the relaxin had kicked in and knackered her lower back.
My teacher is 50 and does lots of antenatal so is obsessed with protecting hip and sacro-iliac bits ....

eatriskier · 29/11/2013 14:12

When I started on these threads months ago I never though we'd all be here congratulating someone for not eating a sausage - and getting some much fun and inspiration from it. Maybe 5:2 has kept us sent us all crazy

rubbishfamily333 · 29/11/2013 14:18

Hey well done for everyone with losses Grin

I lost another pound so I'm now 10.2.6 I really wanted to loose more then a pound this week and I'm getting impatient! I'm not feeling disheartened though which is good.

So within 4 weeks I have lost 8lbs. I really really want to be 9.7 but goal weight is 9stone.

rubbishfamily333 · 29/11/2013 14:21

I really feel like I have to start exercising now to push my weightloss along I might have to get the dredded shred out again ShockShock

toffeesponge · 29/11/2013 14:25

I was literally Shock at my sausage posting!! Then Grin when another sausage tried to muscle in!

FYI The sausage was a Tesco Finest banger than I don't even remember buying. Who knew that ONE sausage would do for TWO meals Shock.

TIP GrinGrin.

eatriskier - that is the beauty of this thread. We are all as daft as each other!!!

somewherebecomingrain · 29/11/2013 14:41

I dunno bssh it's not haut cuisine I guess. And who needs both? I've never eaten both before. But it was delicious.
