Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

toffee Are any of your pets a K9 ? If you give a dog the sausage, he might fetch your slippers the next month. If you give the same sausage to a cat, she might deign to let you stroke her.

Throw the damn sausage out the window !

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 21:53

Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge NSV I just went in to the kitchen to put the sausage in a box and in the fridge so I could have it tomorrow and I didn't eat anything.

I have 2 cats. Think they probably would eat the sausage but it is all miiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeee tomorrow!

BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 22:03

Well done toffee Grin.

annielewis · 28/11/2013 22:05

Hi, am back from San Francisco where I started off pretty well and then deteriorated pretty badly, am hoping to pull off a SWATH but will have to wait and see! Been up for hours now as didn't sleep on plane (thanks kiddos) and have got serious munchy mania!!!!!

Am off to catch up on the thread as have had dodgy internet all week so am v behind!!!!

Am planning a FD tomorrow as need to get back on track ASAP!!

Anyone else doing a Friday FD??? (Crosses fingers that someone else is desperate enough to do a Friday and not falling face first into yummy cheese choc and wine....) GrinGrin

Sounds like a lot of you are doing sooo well, love this thread for inspiration, as it's Thanksgiving today I'd like to say how thankful i am for this thread, would not have been able to be so strong without you lot!!! [soppy emoticon...]

postmanpatscat · 28/11/2013 22:18

welcome back Annie!! I might join you tomorrow

Sparklyboots · 28/11/2013 22:54

Hello again. Thank you for everyone's input Thanks for Cuckoo and TIP

I've thought about this a lot and consulted my 'book' - stuff that I kept a record of during therapy/ recovery.

I think I'm going to try 5:2 despite my history of ED. The first and most important reason I have for this is motivation - I'm not here to get the thinnest, buffest, media-idealised body, I'm here because I want to reset my relationship to food and to my body. Because of the therapy etc. I'm doing quite well with this but I have this last area of fear which is keeping me locked a little bit overweight and totally scared of diets. I know my problems last time were linked to perfectionism, but perfection is not on my list of 'reasons to diet'.

I know that getting it right won't solve my other problems, but I do think getting this out of the way will give me more energy and headspace for my actual problems. 10 kilos overweight is not an actual problem; it's a minor niggle and I should treat it as such.

I know who I am and remember what I was like. I can back out at any time, I can eat or not whenever I chose. I can take an interest or let it slide, as I have been. 5:2 is well known for teaching people to experience the range of those choices.

I want to thank those offering to help keep me straight and narrow; thanks. I'm not going to ask anyone to do that - I have to do it for myself. And I can, I have been free of ED for 10 years and out of therapy for 4 and all of those 14 years it was me and no one else doing the right thing, day after day. So I don't see why that's got to change just because I want to shed a little excess.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/11/2013 22:59

You defeated that sausage attack, Toffee, well done !

Annie I am FDing Friday and Sunday, to avoid a weekend Frenzy.

Unfortunately, I seem to have had a Frenzy today instead:
I was at TDEE, but delays at work meant I was too late to go to spin class, so I fell into 3 bowls of Chorizo & cheese pasta, then climbed out onto several pieces of cheesecake, tripped over a bag of peanuts and 2 toasted cheese sandwiches, landed on a choc bar ....
I must develop tactics for Frenzy avoidance on FD evenings when I don't gym.
Hmm

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 29/11/2013 00:05

Right big list, here goes....

Losers..... Well Done!!! - I am one of you Grin

Americans..... Happy Thanksgiving!!!!! - well jel of your turkey! Envy

Annie & other returnees..... Welcome Home!! Get back on the horse, if you need a leg up just shout!

Toffee, Sweetie and anyone else.... Congratulations on your willpower! Toffee - you showed that bloody sausage didn't ya!

SparklyBoots....... Best of luck with it all. On top of everything else you now have your daughter to keep you on track, so put that motherhood guilt to good use by letting it keep you honest!! If not for you, then for her - works like a charm! Grin

BigChoc...... Hmm Hmm .... BigChoc......did you have to eat entire contents of freezer? Or has Bosch man delivered the goods this time??

EatRisky....... Glad to hear you made it out in one piece. Thought we'd lost you in a sea of poo and wee there for a while! Does this explain why I haven't received my weekly food introduction.... huh?... I want to dedicate a 'Twelve weeks of Fasting' cover to you by Christmas, I'm currently stalling on ........ On the blank week of Christmas EatRisky gave to meeee, peanut butter in my porridge,... three cro-nuts,...two townieees ... and a Pumpkin Spice Latte!

This ^ doth not maketh thou songeth!

Me...... I am slightly happy. After feeling bit unconvinced of any movement (scales) this week, I decided to jump on this afternoon and I was down two, that is two pounds on last week! Yippeeeeeee!!!! And the icing on the cake.... about hour later (tmi) my monthly visitor arrived so I a) have made it through pmt. Tick. b) my weight was still down. Ya flippin hoo! Tick. c) I usually lose bit of water weight/bloat afterwards so results should be slightly better in day or two as well. Get in!! Tick.

Obviously not bothered or nothin'. Whatevs. (shrugs casually)

(cranks up volume to Starship - Nothin's Gonna Stop Us Now..... grabs hairbrush and serenades new slimmer reflection in mirror)

annielewis · 29/11/2013 01:05

Cuckoo you are lovely! Well done on your SV! Are we height/weight twins, I can't remember? You're leaving me behind.... will aim to catch you up by Christmas.....

Big choc, I am in awe - I was feeling guilty for having a grilled cheese sandwich!! I don't do your also awesome gym hours tho!!

Ok - who's going to persuade me to get a weighted hoop????

Breadandwine · 29/11/2013 01:51

Good for you, Sparkly! I'm of the opinion that this WOL is all about allowing people to take control - ATB!

Look at you, Cuckoo! And all the other losers.

This article on CBT was in the Mirror this morning - seems it can alter your brain.

BCF here's my calorie counted vegan Chelsea bun recipe. Play about with it as you will.

My favourite way to Christmatise it (if that's not a word, it should be! Grin) is to spread the rolled out dough with mincemeat, instead of with oil and sugar.

I'm going to try it with cardamon next time I make it.

About freezing - any bread will freeze. In fact, freezers and bread were made for each other! Personally I'd freeze the buns after baking.

BTW, I hate the term 'Earslaps'! It's an unpretty name for something that can be quite beautiful!

And I hate violence of any kind! (Sorry, BCF. I do recognise there's a place for your type of boxing.)

Now for something completely different. Grin

I have to say I have been more and more inspired by all the exercise you guys get up to. There was a mention of 'The plank' several weeks ago on here, so I had a go myself and found I could hold it for over a minute. Which led me to think I could actually do some press-ups - and I managed 10, of a sort! Smile

Over the last fortnight I've increased that to 40 at a time. I still don't get down very far, but I'm getting there.

(I did 16 years in the forces in a previous existence - and this is the first time in my life I've done press-ups voluntarily! Grin)

And then I found, last Saturday, that a portable oven I generally struggle to move around, was a lot easier to manhandle - so this was evidence, after only a fortnight, that the press-ups were having an effect.

I thought I should perhaps find a range of exercises - something I could do in the kitchen, between cooking/blogging/Mumsnetting, etc - and I came up with this website, which just fits the bill for me.

Wondered what you folks think of it?

Breadandwine · 29/11/2013 01:55

For anyone looking for something to nibble on Christmas morning, whilst opening the presents, have a look at my festive Christmas loaf.

I was waiting till December to start a thread in the baking section about it, but you guys can have a sneak preview!

And, yes, where are the Christmas smileys?!?

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2013 05:03

B+W Thanks for the recipe, which looks doable for my very limited skills. I may try this hols with cinammon for the spices and play with dates and walnuts for the dried fruit.
Is strong white wheat flour necessary, or is almond / chickpea / coconut / sprouted flour acceptable ?

I also found your link to cheesy soda bread, which I'll do without the curry powder. I love cheesy bread (and cheesy jokes)

Have you tried baking anything with sprouted flours ? The sprouted date bread I buy from Amazon is organic vegan.

Congratulations on your rapid progress with strength training. Sounds like you are starting from a good base strength.
Regular bodyweight training is excellent for improving muscles, bones, blood sugar and general health. Also for lifting ovens !

Your link covers the basics well enough.

  • Pressups, pullups, squats are the classic exercises for the main muscle groups. Try to get the full range of movement in your pressups and keep your back straight in all exercises.
  • I would add bent-over row and deadlift or lower back lift to complete the basic groups, if you can obtain a barbell with adjustable weights.
  • If you don't have a handy bar for pullups, then Amazon etc have cheap bars to attach to walls or doors. Just check the bar is at correct height, plus forward clearance to avoid bumping your face or head.
  • Lunges are good, but only if your knees are ok. The angled loading places more stress on the joints.
  • For abs, best to keep the hands away from the head, both to avoid pulling on the neck and to increase emphasis on the ab muscles.
  • I recommend adding burpees for cardio and dynamic strength. You probably learned to love them in the military.

Enjoy the stronger, healthier you !

BigChocFrenzy · 29/11/2013 07:54

TalkInPeace Article about possible problems with women's joints in yoga:
www.nytimes.com/2013/11/03/sunday-review/womens-flexibility-is-a-liability-in-yoga.html?ref=nutrition&gwh=430546E1F0102274DE652AFD5EE273DA

However, I have read warnings about prolapses, pelvic floor problems etc for women who lift and it hasn't stopped me, although I now restrict upper body lifts to my bodyweight.

Then there are the knee surgeons warning runners ...

Exercise is still the best preventative medicine for most of us.
The combination with 5:2 improves both.

toffeesponge · 29/11/2013 08:05

Morning all Smile.

I will catch up with everyone later this morning as I don't think Sorry late for school miss, I had to talk sausages and fasting would go down too well Grin.

But just time to say......

Go me! Go me! Go ME!

11 stone 4.2 Lowest I have been since after having baby number 3 in 2005! I think I started 5:2 on 12st 4lbs.

Just had half a sausage and a small spoonful of onions in my bread roll and as I took bite number 4 ish I realised I had had enough to I binned the rest ShockGrin.

Back later Brew.

BsshBossh · 29/11/2013 08:06

Weigh-in Friday. 0.8 lb down :) So currently 131.2 lbs (from 210 lbs!). Goal is 125 lbs.

BsshBossh · 29/11/2013 08:06

toffee woohoo!

BetsyBell · 29/11/2013 08:16

Flipping Nora - Finally back to my pre-second-holiday weight (9st11.2 - last seen 23rd August)!

And just eaten a cinnamon and raisin bagel dripping with lurpak - been very much looking forward to that after a wheat-free week.

Must try to be moderateish over the weekend and NO bread frenzies.

Sausage victory Toffee! WHoop!

I've discovered a thing - I no longer have a full length mirror in my bedroom so never see my naked self anymore and this has correlated with a disinterest in doing extra exercise! If I can't see that my arse looks like a poorly filled bag of porridge then it doesn't seem to matter Grin

I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing but as I'm knackered and buggy at the moment it suits me down to the ground. Maybe when I've got some pizazz back I'll install a special arse height mirror to frighten spur me back into action...

What an inspiring thread this is this morning. Well done cuckoo, bssh and toffee on your losses.
I'm supposed to be having a FD today but effectively sabotaged it earlier in the week when I agreed to go out for dinner with a friend. I thought I could do 16:8 am struggling as was so stuffed with flapjack yesterday that I didn't have supper so started off hungrier than usual this morning and coming down from a sugar roller coaster. I need to go & get busy... I've accepted I won't make my goal of 146lbs tomorrow but don't want to be any more than 148.

somewherebecomingrain · 29/11/2013 09:26

Morning all!

toffee your sausage victory is possibly my favourite ever on this thread.

I like your 'I will feel good if I don't have it' tactic.

bigchoc thanks for telling us about your frenzy. They always sound delicious and I enjoy it vicariously.

I am no longer having frenzies since I started eating low carb sweet treats and I recommend it.

All linked to the bf in my case - with a baby the size of my daughter clearly it's not unlike being a serious weight trainer!

sweetie are you bf?

If any breast feeders are on here struggling with frenzies I recommend chocolate pie (see below) and low carb peanut butter cups. It's so nice feeling 'not another please,' instead of 'just one more' until you've eaten like 12.

somewherebecomingrain · 29/11/2013 09:27

Ps I saw the 10s yesterday. First time in7 years.

Today back over 11 stone but lost a notch on my belt,

somewherebecomingrain · 29/11/2013 09:30

Pps having said I'm not frenzy ing any more I've also only done mini fasts. So that could be why

sweetiepie1979 · 29/11/2013 09:44

Somewherebecominggrain that's fab you saw the 11s someone else posted yesterday and I meant to say congratulations yo them too. I'm still 11.1 after 1 fast day and too normal days, yesterday was Supposed to be a fast I couldn't cope by evening with painkillers in an empty tummy. So trying again today but going to succeed which means I might see under 11 tomorrow, I'd be thrilled still 2 stone too lose but to be in the 10s isa big start. Good luck everyone fasting today x

eatriskier · 29/11/2013 10:22

Having a good giggle this morning over 'sausage victory' Grin

Having my first decent friday with DD in god knows how long. This is after 2 days of her refusing naps and I can see she is very tired. New regime seems to be working though I had a moment where both DS and her wanted the same toy and they both had a hissy fit. Managed to placate them by letting DS have it whilst DD picked out her clothes and got dressed then enforcing it being given back to DD. Now if DS would stop fighting his tiredness I could go shower…

Good luck all today's fasters. And remember, you can have that sausage tomorrow Wink

BsshBossh · 29/11/2013 10:36

We should change the FD mantra to I can have the sausage tomorrow regardless of what the "sausage" actually is. In fact Betsy, "sausage" should feature in some way on the next thread title; perhaps even "toffee sponge" Grin.
