Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thank you

I'm really in awe of this WOL, I've tried many times to lose weight, and obviously failed.

This really works.

If I lose this 6lbs I will be under 12stone which is my first goal, are you up for the challenge?

BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 14:26

I'm a rare breed I think, in that I have no problems fasting from home.

FD halfway through. Absolutely fine so far - just black coffee and rosehip tea. I forgot how delicious and strong rosehip is.

BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 14:27

Well done BennetGirl.

sweetiepie1979 · 28/11/2013 14:27

Oh no I wonder if I've mucked up my fast today?
Cafe nero cappuccino no choc
Miso soup
Tiny small bowl of my veg soup
One and a half Home made choc chip cookies!!!

I made them with dd and had to try them.
I think the soup and coffee would be 150 at the most and haven't a clue about the cookies. If I don't eat rest of day do you think I'll be ok to call it a fast?

somewherebecomingrain · 28/11/2013 14:28

I can fast from home too.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/11/2013 14:35

Thank you, Bssh

I find LOF far easier than restricting cals to 500 now

I'm still hungry on liquid only, maybe I am an 'all or nothin' kinda woman through and through

Looking forwards to a great food-filled weekend though, and I know how can indulge, guilt free :-D

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 14:36

The only way I can fast is to eat nothing until my dinner in the evening and to not dive to the fridge the second I feel hungry. I have learnt to think about whether it is genuine hunger or emotional and to drink some water first before automatically eating something. I also imagine eating the food and how I would feel afterwards and usually that is enough to carry on fasting.

I need to leave in half an hour to get the children and won't be home until 4.30 at the earliest so another 2 hours from now without eating. I keep chewing gum in the car and that helps.

Talkinpeace · 28/11/2013 14:41

The secret to fasting at home : Tea, tea and more tea - in a huge cup that you can wrap your hands around to warm them up.
DO NOT have a cup at a "meal time"
DO NOT open and food cupboards
have a pint of water - down in one - if your tummy rumbles (mine has learned not to)
and yet more tea

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/11/2013 14:44

YY to learning not to eat at the slightest twinge in my stomach.

I cook DD her dinner, but was baking her an extra large potato and would eat some before serving it to her/few extra chips in the oven/too many fish fingers and would make a sandwich to 'tide me over' until I ate with DH later.

I didn't need that, but my eyes were controlling my appetite.

You sound as if you're really following your need for fuel, not need to comfort eat. I'll try that imagining how I'd feel if I gave in too.

sweetiepie1979 · 28/11/2013 15:41

Oh shit I ate another cookie? Am I way over 500? Help before I raid the fridge for cheese....

MelanieCheeks · 28/11/2013 15:54

Sweetiepie it will depend, as they are home-made it's hard to say. But if a digestive biscuit is 70-80 cals, I'd guess they are about 100 each.

You are NOT way over your 500 cals. But you will be if you go fridge raiding.

sweetiepie1979 · 28/11/2013 15:57

Ok Melanie thank you xxx

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 28/11/2013 15:59

You're not as over as you will be if you eat that cheese Sweetie.

Put the cheese down. Back away from the Cheese!

I have no idea what your food contained cals wise but i would imagine you are still within. Not by much though. It's the biscuits that are the killers. 50-100 cals per one min!! Empty waste of unsatisfying calories. Get another drink down your gullet.

If in doubt.....

.................. DRINK WATER..................

or put kettle on and have a hot stock.

postmanpatscat · 28/11/2013 16:20

Hugs to toffee and cuckoo and anyone else who wants/needs one!

Well done run and ducky and bennet and any other losers I've missed.

toffee I'm a primary teacher and SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator). PM me if there's anything I can help with.

Planned to fast today but couldn't have had tonight's planned Indian meal and stayed under 500! Could do tomorrow, but will probably do a zero fast on Saturday instead. Easy to keep busy and ignore food, DP away, DD2 at dad's, DD1 busy (and can cook) so I can stay out of the kitchen apart from visiting the kettle.

Sounds like it's going to be a cold weekend. We just got our first gas bill after 15 months in a newly built house...£850!!! Hope no-one wanted anything much for Christmas (and it's time the festive smilies were back!)

sweetiepie1979 · 28/11/2013 17:34

Rigby ok I'm on the water and herbal teas for rest of evening. Difficult fast day today but determined to make it. Thanks for the guidance and support.

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 17:55

I think I might be over 500 but I am not going to beat myself up about it, nor am I going to use it as an excuse to stuff my face. I am also guilty of joining in the kids teas sometimes. Today I have had 4 chips, a parsnip and a sausage so I am Blush. I have left the other sausage that is spare though and have already decided to have a smaller tea when dh gets in.

Thank you postmanpatscat. I have a lot to think about at the moment but will certainly send you a PM once I work out what I need to ask Confused.

BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 19:43

Successful FD broken by sub-300 cal veggie stir-fry. 3 NFDs now, yippee!

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 20:25

Well done BsshBossh!

I am hungry but determined not to give in.

AngieM2 · 28/11/2013 20:31

ducky there are two ways to work out your TDEE when you are an exerciser. Either work it out as sedentary then add the exercise calories on MFP as and when you do them and eat some or all back (NFD only) or work out TDEE incorporating your activity level but then you can't add them on when you do actually go to the gym. I do it the first way.

Talkinpeace · 28/11/2013 20:31

Raid the Fridge
Yup, that's my weakness, especially when I have the door open to get milk for my tea.
BUT
Its all about self discipline - in general, not just relating to food
the kitchen is closed

Once you can bring self discipline and mindfulness into your habits
food
cleaning
shouting at kids
it all starts to come into proportion
or to put it another way
choose your rut carefully as you may be in it for a long time

eatriskier · 28/11/2013 20:51

Wow - this thread really does move fast.

And wow - what a difference a day can make. B12 coursing through my system, a bit of hand holding from DH, some more retail therapy and a short amount of time without both DCs. A far happier Eat who feels like she can tackle the new regime tomorrow. Though not to sure about Mr Riskier, who was already reverting to old habits tonight.

Mini fast complete, which is helping the positive vibes.

Keep on keeping on peeps Smile

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 21:13

do not eat the sausage
do not eat the sausage
do not eat the sausage
you do not want the sausage
you do not want the sausage
you will feel so great you didn't eat the sausage
no don't give up because you went slightly over
you will feel so great you did not eat the sausage
you can eat tomorrow

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/11/2013 21:17

If you eat that sausage now, you can't have it dwp breakfast

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/11/2013 21:17

Dwp? For Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 28/11/2013 21:23

Well done to Ducky, Run and Bennet for your good results.

Rubbish (SpaghettiMonster / PastaFaster / FastaPasta / NotaPastaBin ?)
FDs at home work well for some of us. I always have a Sat or Sun FD, to minimise weekend Frenzies.

I find it easier than at work because:

  • I can't cook as well as the canteen
  • I don't have the cold bike ride to work and back, which can make me vulnerable to refuelling instincts. I can just chill at home.
  • I have a long lie-in, so painless zero-cal hrs
  • I treat myself to an electronic orgy on Kindle or non-food online shopping
