Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Toffee Yes, like cuckoo I was thinking "I bet Toffs doesn't realise what am AMAZING job she's doing" - Parenting is incredibly hard and we're all just muddling through. Please know that teachers tell off kids with slightly raised voices all the time - they are probably pleased to see you addressing a misdemeanour rather than letting the tofflets get away with stuff.

In harder times (ie with younger kids) I was certainly known on occasion to yell across the playground at my kids being horrible to each other. And the school still gave me a job Grin. I'm not proud of having to be the shouty parent but we do what we need to do. These days I'm more likely to lecture them and bore them into submission. I suspect they'd prefer the loud-voiced telling off!

BigChoc - have you launched a frenzy on my body? After saying last night that I'd resisted the hot choc, I then had one. With three choc chip biscuits. With half a bag of haribo to follow.

So I woke up deciding to do 16:8 and not eat until late afternoon but my body has had other ideas & I have had two bowls of cereal, a slice of toast and the other half bag of haribo. And it's only just gone 9am.
However, I have realised that I'm mid cycle and I completely forgot to go back on the pill (luckily I did remember to tell DP before we did anything!!) and have always had to have a sugar frenzy mid cycle and immediately before I'm due when I'm not on the pill.

Runlikeagirl · 28/11/2013 09:25

Toff, as a teacher I'd like to know something was being done. Also as a parent I know it's bloody hard sometimes and the little feckers can wear you down!

I weighed this morning and I'm 11st 1lb. I've lost 2lbs after my maintain! Whoop! Only 2 lbs now to drop below 11 now.

I managed my FD yesterday despite of being labrynthitis again. Have some anti sickness tablets now, so a bit better.

MrsFlorrick · 28/11/2013 10:03

Morning everyone. Still catching up with thread phew.

Talkinpeace is 100% correct!! No such thing as a failed FD!! Evva innit!! Only a deferred, a mini fast or. 16:8.

Toffee. (((((Hugs))))). Keep posting here with us.

Cuckoo. You're amazing Flowers

Eatriskier. Are things better now? Small DC are flaming hard work!!!

My DS is unwell again! After chicken pox, D&V he now has some sort of cold cough. No preschool this week. Ugh. He is laying on the kitchen floor whining over some imaginary issue. It going to be a loooooooong day!!

Plus side is that I manage a full FD yesterday at 495cals!! Woohoo. Sadly so hungry today I could eat a whole horse.
I did last for my 16:8 but only just with about 1min to spare but I then have 350cals of biscuits and cheese. And I am still absolutely starving!!! Yikes. Will have soup for lunch and hopefully avoid the short bread etc.

duckyfuzz · 28/11/2013 10:10

Woohoo I've broken the 11st barrier Grin can't ever actually remember being under 11st though I suppose I must have been once! It's only by a smidge but that's good enough for me, incentive to persevere!

BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 10:11

Well done Run on the loss and hope you feel better soon.

FD for me today so checking in. My clean eating experiment this week has been a huge success: my digestive system has never felt better. I think from next week I'll aim for clean eating days every Monday through Thursdays.

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 10:19

at BetsyBell saying you all want to look after me. My whole life no one has wanted too and I just think I can't take much more but I know I have too as how can I leave my children with no mum.

BetsyBell - I really want the school to believe I am trying with the kids and will always back them up but I think I need to see more from them too. I don't think they have been giving him as much support as he needs as they don't realise he does. I am worrying if he is naughty, upset or has something wrong with him. Another head teacher saw him for a taster day and said she didn't know if his behaviour was because he was naughty and learnt behaviour or because he has learning difficulties. She said she wondered if he was slightly in the autistic spectrum but wasn't qualified to say.

FD today and I go between being too upset to eat to wanting to comfort eat but I know it won't help and I would feel rubbish.

Runlikeagirl - do you mean as a teacher......you would want to know I as the parent was doing something and what would you like me to do? I asked the Deputy Head what the wanted and she said to support him but didn't specify how.

I just want him to settle, make friends, do his work and be happy. His sister isn't being the support she said she would be if we moved her and we have had a chat with her too reminding her we moved her because she asked us too, it has cost us thousands of pounds just to move her and he needs her support.

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 10:23

Thanks MrsF. How are things with you?

duckyfuzz - well done!!

BsshBossh - I am interested in learning what clean eating is.

Runlikeagirl · 28/11/2013 10:32

Toffee, I meant as a teacher it is clear that you are trying to help him and support school. My biggest problems is when parents won't tell us what works at home or won't agree on a joint approach to some behaviours. Its so important for the child for the school and parents to be on the same side.

I work in secondary though, so may not be that useful. By support I would mean being consistent with school expectations. For a student I'm currently working with this means helping with homework, but not doing it for him, making him try something, even when he says its hard- using phrases like 'I know you find this hard, I will help.you'.

Runlikeagirl · 28/11/2013 10:34

I'll come back later, dd is decorating with a Biro!

ChocolatePudding · 28/11/2013 10:38

Hi everyone, just marking my place.

I've not had a chance to even look at the thread for nearly a week. I've missed all your chat. I was ill at the weekend (not fun but good for fasting) and since then I've been run off my feet.

I'm looking forward to half an hour to sit and catch up on all the gossip.

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 10:39

DH and I feel that nothing works with him as he should know by now. He is 8. A couple of other people have said he doesn't know when to stop when told too. What do we do about that Confused? Our usual sanctions are no tv or computer. We sometimes put him to bed earlier but he messes about so much that any time sanctions become irrelevant. I just don't want the stress of worrying every day what the teacher might say and also what he might say if he hasn't had a nice day. Sad

Runlikeagirl · 28/11/2013 10:50

What about rewards? I sometimes fins breaking the cycle and giving praise for something can help with a student. I conspired with a parent this week to make sure this student's home work was really good so I could give loads of praise.

Could you reward him for stuff when he does well? Has anyone sat with him and let him come up with his guidelines as to how he should behave? So he feels like he has some control.

BetsyBell · 28/11/2013 11:12

Have pm'd you toffee

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 11:20

toffee it's eating fresh, unprocessed, whole foods eaten as closely to its natural state as possible - so lightly steamed broccoli rather than broccoli smothered in cheese and baked for 45 mins so the nutrients are gone; whole, unsalted nuts rather than crisps; homemade baked goods made with whole flours and unrefined sugar; water and herb tea rather than fizzy drinks; free range meat where possible; most meals homecooked.

I've not been super strict but I'm much more conscious of the food choices I make.

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 11:39

Runlikeagirl - we have started a sticker chart today as he loves to get a sticker and put it up. I have put a note in his contact book to tell his teacher we are doing this so hope she will see we are trying to help him and would like her support with it.

BetsyBell - thank you.

BsshBossh - thank you, that is all very interesting and something I would like to try. I am fasting today and didn't give in when I felt blue so am happy I am nearly half way through the day.

BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 11:51

toffee if you Google cleaning eating you'll find loads of info.

BsshBossh · 28/11/2013 11:55

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 12:23

Thank you BsshBossh.

Talkinpeace · 28/11/2013 13:02

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY
I moved my fast days so I could have Turkey today - but probably not with as many trimmings as my family in the US are doing tonight Grin

somewherebecomingrain · 28/11/2013 13:06

Hi there.

Thanks tip I needed to hear that. Thanks mrsf for reiterating it.

Feel very tired today don't know why.

I have had my brushes with depression, PND, etc, though ok at the moment. V sympathetic to toffee, cuckoo, rubbish. MN is a great place to talk about all this.

Xxx

MelanieCheeks · 28/11/2013 13:49

Rubbish I can NOT fast at home - far too many temtations. I'm most successful when busy at work during the day, and out doing something in the evening. Mind you, I had a meeting this morning at which cupcakes were provided! Managed to resist them - made easier by the fact that no-one else was having one, I was wearing my lovely new target dress on its first outing, and I was imagining how messy and unprofessional I would look with frosting all over my face and frock.

Sensible advice as usual from TIP.

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 14:03

FD going well. Not had a morsel to eat. I am frozen though!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 28/11/2013 14:08

Hello toffee, well done on the FD so far, have you got any lemon? A slice in some hot water will help warm you up.

I've lost another 2lbs, I might actually make the total 2st by christmas :-O

toffeesponge · 28/11/2013 14:13

No lemon but I will get one as I think lemon in hot water would be nice.

Well done on your loss!

I would like to be 11stone for Christmas but not sure it is achievable.
