Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Good luck MRsF. To my mind it is still a successful day. After all that to contend with I am surprised you didn't eat 3 times the shortbread!
I am okay today, thank you though rather surprised to find a stern message from my son's school saying he has done X and making it all sound rather dramatic whereas DS has said he did Y and while it isn't great it isn't the drama school seem to be making it. As usual the same kid causing trouble.

Sophiste · 26/11/2013 17:37

sweetiepie I don't deliberately build in mini-fasts on NFDs but as Cakegate happened when I was well on track for a strict FD I was determined to be moderate about it rather than turning it into a Cake Cake frenzy.

So I will end up with 2 fasts and a mini-fast this week. No big deal - sometimes I do 5:2 and sometimes (rarely) 4:3 and sometimes something in between. And my weight loss (if any) seems to bear little or no relation to it. Oh well!

devoncreamtea · 26/11/2013 17:39

Hello! And thanks for all the hellos! I will start tomorrow I think and see how it goes. Looked at the brilliant inspiration thread so feel hopeful! Off to feed children...

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 26/11/2013 17:53

I'm on fd. Broke down. Just on way home after repair. Cold and hungry. Do I chippy?

peplum41 · 26/11/2013 18:02

Hell no helles! You've got this far.

Moving2fast · 26/11/2013 18:10

Haven't checked in for a while as have been away but going to read everything I've missed.

First fast day this week and feeling ok. Have decided not to count calories on NFD this week to see how I get on.

peplum41 · 26/11/2013 18:13

And bshh I have about 1/4 teaspoon, but it does vary in heat. One brand needed a mere dash or dinner was inedible. Cinnamon, ginger also warming, I know you know that, but it doesn't necessarily occur to try as a drink! Hope your clean week works out. BTW, how's the pelvic floor.

Must dash, off to the gym, ooh get me.

MelanieCheeks · 26/11/2013 18:16

Oh dear Helles, would an Options hot choc cheer you up?

wrigglebum · 26/11/2013 18:36

They sound yummy MrsF. They have something similar in Finland and the name translates as 'ear slaps'.

I remember people were talking about loose skin before. I bought some firming lotion as I hate seeing saggy skin hang down when I do the planks on the Jillian DVDs. It seems to be helping a little bit, there was definitely less wobbling around during the mountain climbers yesterday. It's Jergens firming lotion, nice and cheap.

During my FD yesterday I had hot bovril with a splash of Tabasco. It was very satisfying.

Not2bObvious · 26/11/2013 18:41

Sweetie did you just have a baby? I'm trying to remember did you join in a thread or 2 ago a couple of weeks after the birth. If I got it wrong, so sorry but you said you couldn't exercise til 6 weeks? Far be it from me (who walked the streets for miles 2 weeks post partum ) to lecture but if it is such early days maybe you should take it a little easier on yourself, and if you're bf I think you might need extra cals too? We're too hard on ourselves sometimes I think.

I'm shaping up for a kinda consecutive fast, hitting 700 and think I'll leave it at that - proper nfd tomorrow, FD on Thursday. Scales is down to 11.5.4 from 11.8.2 yesterday post fast. On that basis I put on .8 of a pound from last weeks indulgences. I feel much better seeing that number but I feel a lumpy! Like my fat cells got refilled/drained but haven't snapped back, weirdo I know. It's one of those light bulb moments for me, the scales looks ok but the body looksConfused

toffeesponge · 26/11/2013 19:00

I can't believe it. I have inputted all my meals for today (not had dinner yet but have counted it) and I have 426 calories left!! Have not gone without at all today.

duckyfuzz · 26/11/2013 19:11

I've had champagne, and a very large cheeseburger

duckyfuzz · 26/11/2013 19:12

oooh MrsF I'm drooling over those cinnamon snails, yum!

BetsyBell · 26/11/2013 19:12

That was me and bigchoc drooling MrsF!

God they look great, I am definitely going to give them a try.

Also they only last a couple of days in a tin.

^ Ha ha ha hahaaaaa haaa haaa 'a couple of days'? I'd be lucky if they last a couple of hours in this house Grin

BsshBossh · 26/11/2013 19:13

peplum I'll experiment then with the cayenne (and ginger etc - have those in but never thought to add to a hot water beverage). My pelvic floor is slowly healing, than goodness, due to good old Kegals but it will be a few weeks before I venture back to weight training.

MrsF oh yes, I am wearing all my new clothes and it looks like I'm getting more (of my choice!) for Christmas - whoop! Oh and those Danish rolls sound sublime. I've not baked with yeast since university 20 years ago but your recipe is tempting me to try again (it's the cardamom that has truly tempted me and I have both whole and ground forms in).

BetsyBell · 26/11/2013 19:17

I hope you resisted helles - I'm sure it would have been a bit vile and a waste of a fast day.

Unless you really enjoyed it, in which case - there's always tomorrow!

Wrigglebum Ear slaps, cinnamon snails - as long as they are sweet & spicy syrupy bread products I'm a happy customer!

Made the mistake of going in when I collected ds from dm's and she had a go at me that a good friend is above her on ds' s emergency call list.
So the chip shop benefitted from an emotional eating session. I ate just over half of a small portion of fish and chips + mushy peas + a slice of crusty bread with butter. Going to log it and find out what that's done to my fd

FoodieToo · 26/11/2013 19:23

Could someone explain what you mean by mini fast?
Thank you.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 26/11/2013 19:28

I hit just shy of 1400 Blush thanks to my poor will power. Turns out cold and tired and grumpy is a bad combo on a fd when driving past the chippy twice!

Foodie a mini-fast is 1000 calories in from bed one night to morning the day after next. Half the 2000 calories recommended for women.

MrsFlorrick · 26/11/2013 19:29

Foodie. Hi Grin

A mini fast. Is under 1000 cals but well over 500.

I don't usually plan a mini fast. It's when a fast day has gone a bit pear shaped and I've eaten too much.

You still benefit by having a reduced calorie intake for that day. And it stops you from going: "feck it, I've failed" and eating everything in the house in a bit fat failure frenzy.

I wasn't hardcore enough for a full 500 cal FD at first. I eased my way by doing mini fasts between 700 and 900 cals for a while.

And as I said I still use it as a buffer on the days where I do end up going well over 500 or 600 so that I don't completely ruin my efforts and feel shit at the same time.

MrsFlorrick · 26/11/2013 19:31

Helles. Today was meant to be an FD here too and I fall face first into short breAd and later meatballs which I had made for DC (I was meant to have soup). So snap I am at 1400 too. Well under TDEE.

Having another go tomorrow! Grin

MrsFlorrick · 26/11/2013 19:35

Wrigglebum. Grin Yes ear slaps is pretty much the same thing. Sounds much funnier though.

Bovril with Tabasco!! Ooh. Now there's an idea. I often crave something hot salty and spicy on a fD and cup a soup just doesn't quite do it. Tastes to cardboardy.

wrigglebum · 26/11/2013 19:52

Well I loved ear slaps so I think I'll need to make those buns. Ocado was out of stock of the fresh yeast for ages but they have it in now so I'll have to give it a go. I've also added cardamom to my shop.

I love strong flavours on a FD. I eat a lot of pickles, and I have some chilli salt that I sprinkle over veg too if I want to give it some zing.

MrsFlorrick · 26/11/2013 20:42

Peal sugar for those in need:
www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Dansukker-Parlsocker--Coarse-Pearl-Sugar/79203011?prevPageIndex=3&from=shop&tags=|20000|30930|28469|35108|39344&parentContainer=|30930|28469|35108|39344_SHELFVIEW

Not essential but naice.

And this is roughly what they will look like.
thesesublimedays.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/cinnamon-rolls-kanelsnegl.html?m=1

I will post the my grans recipe for pepper nuts (a sort of a spicy Christmassy biscuit) later this week.

rubbishfamily333 · 26/11/2013 21:12

Evening all. I can't remember who on the thread does the hula hooping but I got mine out yesterday and did over 20minutes which was fine.

I tried again today and it is hurting today Hmm any tips on how to make it hurt less? Maybe padding? The hoop is weighted and it seems to be bashing my belly Shock
