The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

Welcome devoncreamtea, love your name :) For inspiration to keep you going I'd highly recommend reading the Inspiration Thread if you haven't already. Most of us do non-consecutive days because it's nice to look forward to eating normally after a fast day, also because many of us need the fuel of a normal day's eating after fasting. But there's no reason to do them consecutively - this WOE is very flexible and must fit in with our lifestyles and personalities to work in the longterm. Try both ways and see which suits you best.

I have just had lunch and even on NFD eating sets of the munchies. I was so pleased yesterday I achieved a FD and I don't want to mess it up today. I need to do my TDEE again as I am logging on to MFP and can't remember how many calories I am allowed. I want to have something else to eat though!

BMR 1462 (no idea what that is).

TDEE 1755 (this has gone down from 1920.

the BMR is the number of calories you need just to keep your body ticking over.
an 1800 calorie drop in your TDEE implies you are doing rather well!
Silly thing - were you aware that low fat diets have been linked to higher rates of depression : make sure you get plenty of protein and fats on your relaxed days

Checking in - FD here and am enjoying lovely warming soup from Pret a Manger's cheesily named "Soup-er Healthy" range. Chicken, Edamame & Ginger - 137 cals and highly recommended!

These are my first cals of the day. Debating whether they will also be my last - we shall see.

Grin at doing rather well!! I don't feel I have lost much though as same 2-3 lbs on and off at the moment. I was 11 6 this morning but I am on TOTM.

I read something negative about 5:2 yesterday and I felt all protective of our little WOL Blush. It was from someone it didn't work for.

there are some people who really, really do not get on with 5:2
most because they persist in overeating on non fast days
(the food they ate to get to BMI 27 is not normal)
and a very few - like Mintyy - who it does does not work for

on the other hand, secret lurkers like endofmyfeather seem to have absorbed the good vibes and made it work Wink

I5t is amazing how 5:2 has helped me emotionally. When I posted earlier that I wanted something else to eat I knew it was mostly just wanting the food as opposed to being still hungry. I didn't eat it and am happy I didn't as now it has passed.

Hi Devoncreamtea I'm in the same position as you only I have 2 kids. 2 stone to lose and just started and trying to het the hang of 5.2. So het started and goodluck.

I've just weighed I've lost 2 pounds(again) bit this week I am not putting it back on. I might try and do 3 fast days. Would love to lose half a stone before xmas

I've mostly done separate FDs but did once, by accident, do them consecutively as I just forgot to eat on the second day.

The flexibility is great - I was supposed to be on FD yesterday but someone brought cake to the office. So I had a mini-fast instead, enjoying a small but delicious piece of cake (whole day still well under 1000 cals), and now doing a proper FD today.

Hope you find a pattern which suits you. A summer birthday makes a great target date.

sophiste do you find having mini fast help the weight loss when that happens you? I think I read that you also have to eat the right amount of calories on your nfd if you don't then it mucks it up? Im knew and trying to get use to all the info.

BsshBossh -when I saw on TIO that you had quoted me I did think I hope no one is getting fed up of me saying about the emotional progress I have made. I have said it enough times! Blush. I just can't believe it having had eating issues for years.

I wasn't fed properly as a child so I would feel I was getting back at the people who didn't look after me when I would stuff my face when I wasn't hungry when really I was hurting myself only. It is incredible not to feel like that any more and I just love not being scared of food and not having to deal with these gremlins.

Hi everyone. It moves fast around here! Busy few days. Helping PTA all day Sunday for Xmas fair. DH has been off sick with D&V today and DS was ill yesterday. DD was ill with it Friday so that just leaves me.... Yikes. Keep your fingers crossed I'm immune by now Grin

Waiting in car outside school to pick up DD.

Had a successful mini fast yesterday of 900cals. Couldn't do the full FD with looking after a sicky DS.

Today was meant to be a FD and I did so so well. No breakfast just a coffee and then grilled mushroom, bacon and an egg with leafy salad and tomato (no dressing) for lunch.

And then I ate 4 shortbread HmmConfused

What was I thinking!! It's about 500 cals alone.

You'd have thought all that vomiting would have put me off. Apparently not.

So this week is not off to the best start. I'm quite shattered too. I actually had a nap with DS and DH at lunch time. It helped.

At least I have been productive and sorted all the vomity laundry and had the machine on a high temp clean out with bleach after. Yuk.

So tomorrow will be my third attempt at a FD.

Wish me luck...

Breadandwine. I've been reading your blog. I love bread too. You can get the Swedish crown brand of fresh yeast on Ocado and in Waitrose. I find it great.

Sweetiepie Non fast days are normal eating days not feast days! 1 feast day a week works in 5:2 but 5 don't Grin. If you do mostly normal eating days you'll be fine.

(I had some in an American-type shop which were full of fat, sugar and chemical aftertaste. Just like when I tried Dunkin Donuts, I wanted to throw up 15 mins later)

Actually Betsy. These are Danish cinnamon rolls. Sorry!

The direct translation is "cinnamon snails" which doesn't sound appetising but beyond yum.

Good for any wintery time of year but very Christmassy.

The Dough:
50g of fresh yeast (you can use dried but you need to convert. Think its 14g of dried)
0.5l warm (hand warm not hot) milk
150g of soft butter
1 egg whisked together
850g plain flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
150g sugar
2 teaspoon crushed/powdered cardamom.

  • mix yeast into warm milk. Add butter then egg and mix.
Mix flour cardamom and salt and mix it into the milk/egg/butter mixture. Stir until it forms a dough. Knead dough for 5 mins Leave dough to raise for 30min.

The Filling:
150g of soft butter
100g of sugar (I prefer brown)
4 teaspoons of cinnamon

  • mix all of the above together

The "Snails":

Part dough into two. Roll into two rectangles circa 30cm x 40cm
Spread the cinnamon butter filling on both.
Then roll each one together (like a roulade) and cut into pieces of 1.5cm.
Put onto baking paper and glaze with whisked egg
You can add some pearl sugar for decoration (hard to find but Ocado has it in their "forrin" section).

Bake at 220c for 12 to 15 mins.

My personal adjustment is that I add more cardamom to the dough. Double usually.

And I make 1.5 times the amount of the butter cinnamon filling because I like it that way.

Enjoy. They are probably 1000 cals each and you will eat till you're sick because you can't stop so only make them when you can give some away.

Also they only last a couple of days in a tin.

Mmmm cinnamon bready things are my favourite and best. I remember crying once when pg because the shop had sold out of chelsea buns. Making myself hungry now!

Feeling good about yesterday's fast. Even managed to go out to a friend's house and just have a cup of tea whilst they were all mean to me! Although I've seen another friend today who i've converted.

I expect that's probably me for the week though.
