Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

ducky todays FD was pretty easy. I think I was ready to do a proper one as I haven't done too well lately.

I am off to bed now. Shattered!

rubbishfamily333 · 25/11/2013 22:03

Bigchoc - I agree, I think I will re-name myself, I don't really like being called rubbish Grin I just used that name recently when I was feeling very let down by my family and wanted to talk about it.

I am feeling very positive with 5.2 so will think of a new name Wink

Talkinpeace · 25/11/2013 22:27

Just spotted this article ....
cebp.aacrjournals.org/content/early/2013/11/13/1055-9965.EPI-13-0636
I rest my case on fizzy drinks Wink

And I know the colder greyer weather makes fasting and motivation harder but hang on in there chaps and chapesses
Eyes on the prize ....

BsshBossh · 25/11/2013 22:50

peplum thanks for the tip. Is it a pinch of cayenne?

BsshBossh · 25/11/2013 22:53

2 NFDs coming up but as I'm on this healthy, clean eating experiment until Friday morning I'm not that excited by the next two days at all. And it's not that I eat unhealthily during weekdays as it is; it's just the thought that I can't eat just anything I want that's deflating me. Oh well, it's my choice and it's a personal experiment so I shouldn't moan.

whimsicalname · 25/11/2013 23:17

So, I've found a solution to the 'too many festive meals' problem: I'm going to do the Jillian Michaels diet plan from Ripped in 30 on NFDs, with the caveat that i'll eat what I want when I have a do. feels like a reasonable compromise, and hopefully will help me get on top of portions and things. Also the calorie are split over 3 meals pretty evenly meaning decent breakfasts, which will help with hangovers tiredness.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/11/2013 23:33

Hiya Rubbish Good to hear you're thinking of a new handle.
I feel so rude addressing you like this !
You have become noticeably more cheerful on 5:2, so I think you have moved on from your family disappointments.
Just take your time and think of something that suits your new WOL.

Night all

rubbishfamily333 · 25/11/2013 23:54

I'm so hungry I might take dd out for dinner tomorrow! I saw pasta on the tv and I want it Wink

rubbishfamily333 · 25/11/2013 23:57

Bigchoc - thanks Grin wow I hadn't thought about the fact that I have become more cheerful but I guess now I really feel like there is hope for me to be happy with my size again as 5.2 is working for me where everything else has failed. I wouldn't have thought others would have noticed though!

Breadandwine · 26/11/2013 01:34

I saw pasta on the tv and I want it

RB333, what about SpaghettiMonster for a new nickname?

You have become noticeably more cheerful on 5:2

It's a combination of the 5:2 itself, and these threads! Grin

Together, they're infectious!

healthyindulgences.net/2009/04/healthy-low-carb-chocolate-pie/

Just made this with truvia and brown rice syrup. Def tastes amazing. And not moreish - felt sick on the lickings! Result!. (Is that a bit bonkers? What I mean is I physically couldn't frenzy - surely that's good),

You do have to blend the ricotta and choc a lot - poss it needs to be heated. I couldn't mix them enough so it came out grainy.

Anyway morning all.

After a 1000-cal ish 19:7 yesterday I seem to be half a pound into the 10s.

Re names smellylittleorange has been around on the boards a bit. smelly what is the story behind your name?

My name is about conceiving. It's a poetic metaphor from Larkin about fertility.

toffee more ((((hugs)))). I've been through some awful s--- in my time. Things always get better. Xxx

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 26/11/2013 07:56

Moanin'

Just checking in. Ate at twenty to ten last night with homemade hot and sour soup. So although I didn't strictly manage liquid only because my soup was chunky, I did get good 24 hrs in before eating. Followed by 3 squares of 70% choc Grin totm approaching! All in under 500 though.

Not sure what's occurring today. Might be a mini. Might be another fd for my 4:3. Might even go for walk run if I can bear to face the temps out there! On bit of a 3 weekly plateau pattern at mo. But maintaining my losses which is main thing!

Good luck all today! Well done everybody!

B&W I love you! X

Spaghetti Monster sounds good. But as you're prob having to avoid on fd, shouldn't that be PastaFaster? Grin

Smelly .... Unless you are freak like Tip and don't like chocolate, the obvious next choice for you must surely be ChocolateOrange or similar? Tell us why you gave yourself that name and anything else relevant so we can continue the renaming ceremony.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 26/11/2013 08:02

Or you could just tell us to sod orf, you're quite happy with your name.... Hmm

..... but maybe at least consider an adjustment to AromaticOrange, to satisfy the positivity element of thread??! Grin

BetsyBell · 26/11/2013 08:03

I feel very odd having not done a Monday fast - just goes to show how much we get used to our routines! So fast day today instead.

Truth is my guts are a tad in turmoil today/yesterday - perhaps a low level bug. I think my poor digestive system could do with a break.

I managed not to go overboard yesterday - all my fast-wrecking indulgences were fruit, nuts, veg and protein. I didn't touch any bread or other starchy stuff and didn't want to.

Hello again to smellylittleorange - hard to forget that username!

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 26/11/2013 08:56

Peplum, funny you should say that about cayenne tea, I've been drinking raspberry and chilli tea and noticed my (TMI ALERT) bowels have been a lot happier, and yes, the warming effect is lovely on a FD.

I managed all day without food, not even milk in drinks.

Well, sort of. I caved in at tea time and ate a chocolate.

But that was it! Nowt but fruit tea and water for 24hrs.

Good luck to all the fasters today.

BsshBossh · 26/11/2013 10:09

BennetGirl what brand is that raspberry and chilli tea and where can I find it please?

Healthy NFD today. Have just had a bowl of Dorset muesli, then lunch will be a tuna and brown rice salad with lots of raw veggies. Dinner might be the same as lunch because DH is not here and I can eat whatever I want. Then I'll add a bowl of nuts to my dinner to bump up my day's calories. Then pudding will be a few squares of black Valrhona chocolate. Actually, I'm looking forward to today's eating now I've written it out.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 26/11/2013 10:15

It's from The London Tea Company, and I bought it in ASDA ages ago Bssh

Hoping they still have it, or I can find it somewhere, it really hits the spot!

If not, I suppose a raspberry tea with some chilli powder/flakes might work, but I'm not a fan of things floating in my drinks unless it's fruit in gin

sweetiepie1979 · 26/11/2013 11:05

Hi all, I'm lying in bed reading all the posts feeling inspired. I need to get up but fast day yesterday and it makes me so tired and irritable anyone else? Also toddler gone to nursery and sweet baby lying beside me so it's hard to move. Yesterday was my fifth fast day and so far I've lost 3 pounds and put it on on feast days which is really frustrating.I struggle to count calories even on mfp. It drives me mad and since I cook a lot if casseroles and soups I don't know how to count it. I'm
going to keep going for another few weeks though and
see what happens. If the weight goes back on on feast
days is that a sign I'm eating too much? I'm not doing
exercise until ive had 6 week check and my spd clears
up also abdominals split in this pregnancy so I'm
limited with what I can do for w while .I have 2
stone to lose.

BsshBossh · 26/11/2013 11:17

sweetiepie are you losing weight overall? You cannot overeat on NFDs - well, you can on some but then you need to balance it out on other NFDs. It's easy to make up for the FD deficits on NFDs so, until your appetite naturally adjusts, you'll have to be mindful of your NFD eating. MyFitnessPal allows you to input your own recipes in Recipes >> Create a new recipe. It feels time consuming but once you've inputted your regular meals it'll take the guesswork out of trying to work out calories.

Good luck!

BennetGirl thanks, I will look out for it (I don't like floaty bits in tea either!).

sweetiepie1979 · 26/11/2013 11:26

Thanks bssh didn't realise that. Dont know if I'm losing weight over all my clothes haven't fitted for ages and still wearing maternity cclothes.

devoncreamtea · 26/11/2013 12:05

Hello 5:2 ers, could I jump aboard please?! Really want to shift a bit of extra weight - have been having a go at low carb but I find it hard to keep up - am Mum of 4 (10, 5, 4, 2) so busy with them and not always v.organised! Have gained weight this yr after stopping bf (and enjoying wine again!) now 10 and half stone (biggest ever!)...would like to lose 2 stone, be healthy and like my body again! Will fast twice a week - any suggestions about days - consecutive or separate? Very inspired by the great weight loss reports, hoping to be at target (and bit fitter too) by my 35th birthday in the Summer. Thank you!
