Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Logged on and caught up with thread to prevent self from eating unopened box of jaffa cakes I found at the back of a cupboard at work. Not interested in them now, funny how reading these threads does that, wonder why?

Lots of really interesting points made, but brain blank now!

Sings soft kitty to toffeesponge
Thanks for mentioning agnuscastus, think I need some. V v pms, all month. Can be quite snarly on fds, is starflower just for breast pain or does it help with moodiness too?

Last week was a disaster, every day was deviant. No fasts achieved. I'm veering towards trying a full on lofd on Monday. Bring it on.

Well done weetabix and whimsical

somewherebecomingrain · 24/11/2013 06:54

whimsical yay! You only started recently!

Everyone is zooming past me but that's no mystery - see below.

prplum taking time off when you need it should possibly become a more acknowledged part of this woe, more discussed. It seems to reboot and aid weight loss IMHO.

peplum41 · 24/11/2013 06:58

Oh and from the dirty thirty thread, well done to twinmama you fellow PCOSer.

Can I Change my name to soft kitty? Peplum seems so last year.

peplum41 · 24/11/2013 07:07

Ooh prplum, very nice rain, I do regularly have breaks and 16:8 weeks too.

Loved your "vast"baby description!

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 07:59

Thanks everyone for being so nice to me last night Flowers.

I then had a nightmare about stuff on my mind so think some of my blue mood is down to that, even if psychologically I hadn't thought I had been thinking about it. I had forgotten I get like that at times. Consequently up too early. Have choc chip muffins in the oven for the school fayre and about to make a cake to take too.

I have put a message in my phone to do my nails and drink more water as both will help with the feeling better, not eating for the sake of it s and getting healthier.

peplum41 - I don't know if the starflower helps with PMT as I take it with the AC and haven't taken it on its own.

At least I am no longer late Confused.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 24/11/2013 08:21

Morning, toffee, sorry you had such a bad night, remember to keep that diary as well as take your supplements

I had a bad night of sweats, but had a really strange dream about Tony Benn (politician) he and I shared a Clay pipe of the most lovely cherry tobacco, then I left it in the ashtray and it caught fire. He said 'we all burn out in the end' and I woke up but with the most wonderful content feeling.
Weird or what!

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 08:44

At least I knew why I dreamt mine!! Grin. Were you disappointed it wasn't real??

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 24/11/2013 08:58

I was, he's a marvellous man. But I haven't smoked for 8 years, never a pipe either :-D

postmanpatscat · 24/11/2013 09:07

great stuff whimsical! It's not just celebs who can be a size 8 after having four kids eh?

Southeastdweller · 24/11/2013 10:54

Hi everyone. Been offline as I've been running the lovely gauntlet that is the current London rental market Hmm. Not having much luck yet so whilst feeling a little sorry for myself yesterday I went into La Fromagerie near Baker St for some foodie goodies. Just had scrambled eggs on honey and wholewheat bread with balsamic vinegar then a slice of banana loaf accompanied by strong coffee, which was all fabulous.

Catching up now.

Talkinpeace · 24/11/2013 13:51

Southeast
That sounds yummy.

I've been gardening this morning and am shortly having roast duck for lunch : DH always does the roasts in this house.
Kids are vegging out : wow that makes a change

BsshBossh · 24/11/2013 14:01

Southeast sounds like a very yummy brunch. Good luck with the search for a new home. It's always stressful but wonderful when you finally find home.

Lovely mixture of busy and chilled weekend here. I'm also gearing myself up for a week of ultra clean eating: loads of veggies and lean proteins, only wholegrains and rice, as unprocessed as possible. Just to balance my eating out a bit as I'm partial to indulgent eating :)

postmanpatscat · 24/11/2013 14:10

southeast I'm also in London so you have my sympathy...brunch sounds fab though!

toffee hope you're feeling brighter today.

bssh well done on your clean eating plan...won't be joining you on that one since I've just bought pain au chocolat for my late breakfast!

Another NSV for me (tbh I don't really do SVs any more)...beat last weekend's PB of 58:30 and ran 10k in 56:58 this morning.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 16:04

Busy day. Up at 7 ish baking. Washing, cooking, washing, drying, washing, folding clothes, more washing, loaded dishwasher about 4 times. School fayre. Not eaten much. About to have an early roast dinner. Tomorrow FD and I will do better tomorrow.

Not2bObvious · 24/11/2013 16:47

Scales disaster this morning (would one refer to this a f b scales failure? Fbsf possibly?)
After last wi in Tuesday of 11.4.6, maintaining/plateauing basically for the last 3 weeks to an astounding 11.9, this follows 5 days of work away/general unrestrained eating. I know I didn't gain 4.4 after 4 days of medium excessive, I know it's closer to 1-2 pound but I feel HUGE.
Today's a 16:8 with a 5 mile walk and the next week is no wine & no wickedness, well after today of course! Have to say goodbyeWink

Talkinpeace · 24/11/2013 17:07

but its not fat, its fluid and undigested food
one or two REALLY strict fasts and it will be gone again

Not2bObvious · 24/11/2013 17:21

Yep, 2 really strict fasts approaching - looking forward to them Tip to be honest, excess isn't appealing anymore, indigestion all week, just been so binge'y it's affecting everything, bloated as well from too much sugar/carbs.
Getting up in the morning for run or kickboxing & weights. Lots of exercise & water, clean living for next week - probably next 10 days as working all next weekend, may as well incorporate a strict regime before my next work trip away, supposed to be a fun one but at the end of the day, it's work. Then another week it's my Xmas party so I need to be back to my best. I just worry when I lose the plot and see such a scales jump I'll be back to big again, but try to
remind myself of the saying someone quoted, that if you chipped a plate you wouldn't chuck the whole dinner service! Although I do seem to have a lot of chipped plates these days Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 24/11/2013 19:06

Not2b Don't worry, you'll soon lose that holiday gain, mostly water and a packed tum.

I have had at least one weekly Frenzy since I was a little girl and would blow my pocket money on a ½ lb Galaxy bar, so I have to change a 48-year habit.

With 5:2, I learnt to limit Frenzies to maximum 1 day (4-8 hrs) per week and schedule my zero-cal 36-hr fast directly afterwards.
So, I "gain" 3-4 lb in 1 day and lose it the next, but I stay sensible (sub-3000) the other NFDs.

I will now try to reduce Frenzies to every 2 weeks if I can I CAN.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/11/2013 19:08

Toffee It sounds like you really are Cinderella with that horrendously long list of chores. You work so hard, looking after your family.
Maybe you are just worn out and need a holiday ?

BigChocFrenzy · 24/11/2013 19:15

Postman Great progress with your 10k, you are fast !

Well done on the size 4/8s, Whimsical, especially if you have 4 DCs.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 19:37

BCF - tbh I don't know how people manage a job as well as kids as they take up all my time along with the house and while I have less animals now there are still extra jobs to be done with regards to them. And I am not even that good at keeping house! I am so tired. I feel it mid afternoon and wonder if I should try and have a day time nap while the kids are at school. I am shattered on FD too and need to find a way to resolve that. Tomorrow I really want to do better. I haven't lost anything for ages and feel I have lost my way a bit. We didn't go away this year together as we had new animals but I did take the children for 2 nights alone so clearly not a holiday!!

Southeastdweller · 24/11/2013 20:37

spam I don't bother telling the more cynical and ignorant people in my life about 5:2. I can't be arsed with the negativity so I just say I've cut back on what I eat and am eating healthier which is of course true Smile

Bssh I'm making a return visit to Paul A.Young in the week after reading what you had on Friday night. I hear he's opened a new shop on Tottenham Court Road.

toffee Some exercise would help with your lack of sleep, mood and weight, do you do any? Well done for getting down to a 14.

annie How're you getting on in San Francisco with all that divine food around you?

Well done sophiste and everyone else I've missed who've lost weight this week. Not long now until party season begins!

wriggle I bet you're the talk of the other mums at the school gates being so newly svelte and having four kids! Congrats on being a size you've never been before and a very healthy one at that.

Tough week ahead with work and moving. Fasting as usual on Tuesday and need to be mindful of emotional overeating. I'm counting down the days until the Christmas break. Good luck to everyone fasting tomorrow.

duckyfuzz · 24/11/2013 21:08

I don't talk about 5:2 either, unless it's one of my friends who's also doing it. I am however determined to get dh doing it - he starts tomorrow!

Anyway, I'm half a stone down since half term Grin there will be a 10 at the start by the end of the week

Congrats on svelteness wriggle! I can only dream of being an 8, but a 10 would do me!

Toffee you sound like you need a fairy godmother to sweep in and take you away from it all for a day or two. Where are you? Do you have support nearby?

I have a busy week coming up, with FD planned tomorrow and Thursday, running is now on my calendar, so it has to happen. Went out with dtd2 this morning which was nice but didn't last as long as usual.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 21:09

SoutheastDweller - I haven't done any proper exercise for ages. It has been a crazy two months and just getting the basics done and not losing the plot has been all I could manage. Funnily enough though I had decided if I need any odd bits of shopping this week I was going to walk to the supermarket. It is an hours round trip plus with it being so cold I suspect more calories will be used up [hopeful emoticon] so a good idea all round.

toffeesponge · 24/11/2013 21:11

BTW are you really in the South East?
