Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 31 - Getting healthier one day at a time.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:36

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

You have my sympathy wrt pmt and hormones

I'm older than you but recently had my mirena coil out as despite all the hype it did naff all to keep my periods in check, if anything it's made them worse

If you're on a NFD, have you got a hot drink on the go? Preferably something you can slug alcohol into, if DD has got to me I find great comfort in imbibing something she can't have ;)

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 20:33

I did plan to get drunk and silly tonight but no alcohol was forthcoming. I think DH has got used to be saying no so has stopped asking. I am in bed in my dressing gown, shattered. I have this annoying habit of waking up too early and once I think of something I need to do I can't go back to sleep so have been up at 6 something for too many weekends now.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/11/2013 20:36

I'll be up early too, DD has no interest in laying in :(

Have you tried evening Primrose and starflower oil capsules, they can really help with pmt

BigChocFrenzy · 23/11/2013 20:43

Toffee I hope you had a good rest after your massive chores yesterday. My goodness, you do work hard.

Somewhere Your 4000 yesterday makes you my Frenzy rival. We should have a competition !

BigChocFrenzy · 23/11/2013 20:45

Oops, I was multi-tasking and thought it was tomorrow already !
Toffee Put your feet up.

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 20:54

I do take a couple of things from Holland & Barrett but don't remember every day and boy do I know about it Sad.

I'll be up early tomorrow baking for the school fayre. I love baking but I don't often do it for public consumption so a bit nervous.

I usually feel like this a week before I am due but for the last few months it has been on the day I am due or AF starts Confused. Something weird is happening this month and I don't like it .

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/11/2013 21:02

Actually, a good foot-stamp works wonders

A couple of weeks ago I was suffering really badly but forced myself out for a run.

I was knackered after, but my mood had lifted

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 21:15

I best not go running in my dressing gown and pants Grin.

Kids in bed now. DH wants me back downstairs but I am hiding in my bed. Slippery slope for me.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/11/2013 21:16

Why not invite DH to join you in your cosy bed, he could bring a nice hot chocolate and some toast?

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 21:20

I just want to hide. I suspect he is happy downstairs as it has been ages an di haven't appeared. He doesn't like X Factor so will probably come up when it is over.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/11/2013 21:24

Toffee, you do sound really down and affected by this, is it worth a trip to your GP at all?

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 21:35

TMI warning at end.

I feel a bit depressed tbh but no way can I go back on meds. I think it is complicated because I don't know that I have had proper hormones as was on ADs for years but dh has just said I did still have PMT when on them but I don't think I did as I felt numb when on them. I have been off them over a year now but feel the last 3 months or so I have felt different when coming on. I am late this month but have lost a bit but looks more like end of it not the beginning.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/11/2013 21:40

If this was a face to face conversation, I would be offering you a big hug, and encouraging you to go back to your GP

Something sounds adrift here. Maybe you are peri menopausal?

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 21:53

I think I feel like I was when depressed during totm but the rest of the time "normal." Therefore it is a shock when I feel low again as I am so much better than I used to be.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/11/2013 21:57

Can you keep a mood diary for a month or two, record when your mood dips and rises?

Also, do you take vitamins at all? Vit D deficiency can affect mood, but it has to be the right type

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 22:04

That is a good idea. I will do that.

I take Agnus Castus and Starflower. AC for PMT and SF for breast pain. I also have magnesium and caster oil capsules iirc but never remember to take them.

Runlikeagirl · 23/11/2013 22:05

My doctor (psychiatrist) suggested evening primrose and vitamin B6 for pmt. I get it really badly, and as I'm bipolar more hormone mood changes are noticeable. She also told me to go to GP as there is a cascade of measures for pmt now, they shouldn't just let you get on with it.

It is awful, toffee take care of yourself x

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 23/11/2013 22:09

I'm off to bed myself now, better get some sleep before the night sweats start and DD starts to stir

Hope you get some rest too, toffee, and feel more up beat in the morning.

toffeesponge · 23/11/2013 22:10

I started on the AC as my GP was hoping they would be enough instead of ADs but they weren't. Now I can see that the AC does work as I notice the difference when I forget to take them, but at the time I needed something stronger.

rubbishfamily333 · 23/11/2013 23:01

Hey everyone Grin

Well today I had a miller corner for breakfast, subway for lunch and dominos for dinner Shock after 4 slices I felt stuffed!! Normally I could eat 5-6 slices and not feel too stuffed! And even though its not the healthiest of days I'm still within my tdee Grin

rubbishfamily333 · 23/11/2013 23:05

Toffee - sorry to hear your not feeling great at the moment, I'm sure there will be plenty of good advice from others.

I would suggest to do something just for you, buy a nice book or new pjs? I bought a onsie this week as it was totm I was fasting and extremely hungry so I went out to get the onsie to make myself warm and cosy. Normally I would have bought a large bar of chocolate and a multipack of cakes and eat them all Confused

somewherebecomingrain · 23/11/2013 23:07

((())) toffee. What the others said.

bigchoc yes your antics give me a shock of recognition. Except I don't train so have no obvious excuse. I am bf a vast baby who is On the 95th percentile.

It's so easy!

I've always eaten like a champion.

whimsicalname · 23/11/2013 23:47

New nail varnish (favourite non food treat here) for toffee and mrsF and anyone else who needs it.

I've only done one fd this week as I think psychologically I needed a break. Saying though, I feel very motivated for a good FD on Monday.

I can't remember you was chatting 5:2 deniers, but I have a couple of very buff military pals who were all 'you can't do that, that's so bad for you blah' but 3 months and 10lbs on, half of the same group are now doing 5:2 as it's obviously effective. I live in the US though, and it's unheard of.

After 3 weeks of plateau I'm emboldened by a terrific nsv: 2 size 4 dresses. (really size 8). I've never owned anything size 8 except shoes!

rubbishfamily333 · 24/11/2013 00:08

Whimsical - what size was you when you started? Well done Grin

whimsicalname · 24/11/2013 00:45

Thanks Rubbish. I was 170 lbs in March when I started weighing myself, but had baby #4 in january and was probably closer to 185 post partum. In pre preg best case scenario I would have been a UK 12 but 10 in M&S or 14 in Zara! I would have confidently said I was a 10 now. 8 was a surprise. And they're different makes too, so it's not a fluke!
