The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well FD didn't go as planned yesterday, I had over 1000 cals. I knew this would be too hard when I was home. I am going to go away for a bit and come back when I get to work. Hopefully I'll be back by the end of the month.

Im keeping track of my food on MFP for now, but Im not going to be able to do any FDs while Im at home.

Good luck everybody hope there are plenty of loses and NSV before I come back.

BsshBossh · 19/11/2013 11:19

Biscuits good luck with the job hunt and see you soon :) If possible, try and skip the odd meal and minimise snacking so your digestion still gets regular rests.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/11/2013 11:28

Thanks Bssh I never eat breakfast and if I do I usually skip lunch. I have decided to go cold turkey with the evening snacks so I am eating less, just finding it hard to stick within 500 cals for a day. So have averted to low calorie rather than 5:2. Will try to stick with a 16:8 though now Im thinking about it.

Once I am back in work I will find it easy again to have 2 FDs a week.

BsshBossh · 19/11/2013 11:32

16:8 is a great idea, just remember that an 8-hour window is not an excuse to cram in the calories. The key thing to remember is to give your digestive system breaks - so minimal snacking even within 8-hour eating window.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 19/11/2013 11:33

True, its too easy to forget and think "I want some food, oh look its not time to stop yet"

somewherebecomingrain · 19/11/2013 11:45

Lost post!

FD today. Who is fasting too? How are you doing?

I am finding it fine so far touch wood. Strange how it varies. Does anyone else find it varies?

ChocolatePudding · 19/11/2013 12:26

Hi somewhere. I'm FDing too. Struggling hence on this thread more often than usual. I'm also in a rotten temper.

Having a cup of coffee. Don't like the stuff but need the caffeine and black tea makes me feel sick.

Used to just rely on Panadol extra soluble for a perk up but it's prob not a great idea taking paracetamol unnecessarily (It really works tho!!!)

Just waiting for energy and warmth to kick in.

ChocolatePudding · 19/11/2013 12:27

Off to do nursery run in a bit so that will pass some of the time. Haven't done the work I was supposed to do. Bum.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 19/11/2013 14:00

Afternoon! I am also fasting. Well supposed to be anyway!

Spent morning outside in freezing cold for cross country event. Was supposed to have taken a thermos of coffee, but the bloody thing exploded in my face!! So kicked that idea into touch. It actually went bang and glass everywhere. Fortunately no injuries but could've been very nasty as face just above it!

So no coffee, freezing cold, had bad night again last night so shattered too. Just can't sleep at mo. Dd woke me up at 5 because I was crying in my sleep! Proper big fat tears with it! Docs were running 15 mins behind despite me (surely) being 2nd patient of day! So was late to cross country too. Docs app didn't resolve much and I have to go back for part 2 of the appointment next week as we couldn't get to bottom of it all!!

So anyway, went to shop on way back from cc picked up a prepacked sandwich - 520 cals and shovelled half straight in.

Not sure how but I managed to stop myself. It was turning into a completely mindless eating moment, until I realised how naff it tasted and thought - if I'm going to blow fd, it needs to be worth it. I'll go home for cheese on toast or similar. But so far am just sipping a coffee. So annoyed with self that I got through 260 cals on something that wasn't even slightest bit nice. Was def emotional eating!

Am either going to write off fd and enjoy some wholesome grub today, or once have thawed out will see what can be salvaged as I need to eat tonight. Have prepped meal and don't think could last til tmw without it!

Ramble over!! Just needed to offload Grin

Lucy Thanks and get your story up on Inspiration thread! That's a mega achievement - Well done you!

BsshBossh · 19/11/2013 14:13

Cuckoo hope you're warmed up by now.

I forgot how bloated breakfast makes me feel these days. NFD today and was not at all hungry for but fancied some porridge after waking up. What a mistake! Yes, it was yummy but made me feel too uncomfortable - so much so I couldn't do my usual gym session or enjoy my planned panini for lunch. Lesson learned. Save breakfast for lunch on NFDs.

somewherebecomingrain · 19/11/2013 14:44

bssh wish I was like you!

All going ok here though.

cuckoo well bloody done for stopping yourself. That is way harder than not starting in the first place.

chocpud waves. I'm having an easy one but have had some terribly hars ones. You are doing great.

somewherebecomingrain · 19/11/2013 14:48

Ps chocpud the thing I find hardest is not being productive. I don't like to have to give anything up to fast. So I'm sympathetic about the work.

Oh Crikey I can already feel my food obsession cranking up. bsssh like you except I CAN comfortably eat whatever I like on nfds.

somewherebecomingrain · 19/11/2013 14:48

Bssh I am like you I mean

lucyintheskywithdinos · 19/11/2013 16:04

Thank you everyone. I'll wait to post on the inspiration thread until I have lost this last 10lbs I think...losing 50lbs in a year sounds more inspiring!

Almost all on 5:2. I lost about 15lbs doing 16:8 at first, then when that slowed down I switched to 5:2. Had a brief stint of 4:3 when I hit a plateau.

cuckoo stopping yourself is impressive. It seems that 5:2 really works for a lot of us to sort out how we think about food. I'm totally with you on the 'food has to be worth the calories' thing.

lermontova · 19/11/2013 17:44

MrsF Glad to hear your DH is waking up to himself, was feeling really bad for you! Fingers crossed the better behaviour lasts.

Talkinpeace · 19/11/2013 17:52

No fast and no gym today.
But I have brought DHs and my accounts up to date so feel pleased with myself.

ChocolatePudding · 19/11/2013 19:28

Not my most successful FD today but if I stop here it'll be 650 for the day. Enough to justify a NFD tomorrow and FD on Thursday.

Felt soooooo tired all day. Couldn't concentrate on anything and freezing too. As a result had an NNN fail too. A spoonful of B&J and a few chunks of chocolate (but good quality dark stuff).

Off out to a client soon which will keep me away from the kitchen. Must make sure I go straight to bed when I get home.

ChocolatePudding · 19/11/2013 19:29

And I've noticed a few of you out there sneaking onto the new thread already. Tut tut!!!

duckyfuzz · 19/11/2013 19:39

Soz chocpud, guilty as charged!
To repeat posting on the naughtynew thread - NFD, TDEE, tired, working from home tomorrow, yay
zzzzzzz

toffeesponge · 19/11/2013 19:40

I feel like I have been playing truant Sad but we have had so much going on and was worried about being recognised in RL that I have just not been chatting. I have been mad busy for the last couple of days and hardly been in the house. I will be busy tomorrow morning too going into school but after that I plan a lot of staying in!

Yesterday I fasted. Today I haven't eaten much as been busy and I plan to fast tomorrow too but we shall see how we go. I am really tired atm and wonder if that is from a lack of energy giving food.

somewherebecomingrain · 19/11/2013 20:04

Hooray for me. Sorry that's very me me me but I am proud of myself. I not only achieved some tasks (lots of housework, planning, present buying, looking after sick dd) but I also PROPERLY fasted and felt pretty ok.

Four small milky coffees 150.
A couple of spoonfuls of baby formula powder (it's got nutrients - of which more later). 60 cals
Two sainsburys sustainable cod steaks (102 cals) flaked into asparagus, cherry toms, sweet pepper and mushroom, seasoned with sea salt, lemon juice and chilli. Total 250 cals.

Stone me if I'm not under 500. Without getting hideously hungry or grumpy or overly food obsessed,

toffee re the tiredness I've been having the same thought. Don't want to go on about breast feeding but I have felt I really can't afford to eat packaged soups and ready meals, hence lots of cooking with fresh ingredients like above, and chucking baby formula down my throat (hope that doesn't sound too wierd).

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 19/11/2013 20:49

NFD of 2000 today but that was mostly a slice of ds' s birthday cake with ice-cream. Otherwise would have ended on 1400. Would like to fast tomorrow but we have twilight training and then I start worship leaders training in the evening so wouldn't be able to have an early night to avoid snacking. FD thursday then.

Yesterday's FD was good. Seemed really easy and, this time last night, I was doing yoga - I felt so energetic!

I agree Cuckoo, the main thing is you stopped yourself wolfing the whole thing and you'll remember how rubbish that plastic sandwich tasted in the future.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 21:07

Yes, not eating calories you're not actually enjoying is an epiphany isn't it? Nonsensical as it is so obvious and yet it's taken me years to learn that!

Total waste of calories otherwise.

I did an MFP calorie check today as I almost never do and thought I'd see what my normal day's eating actually added up to. Pleasantly surprised that it was just over 1500 even though I wasn't making any effort to hold back, and in fact I thought I was overdoing it a bit today!

No naughties day though - oh except I did cheat a bit and had 2 slices of Soreen malt loaf - way more calorific than I thought too! (But lovely and I enjoyed every bite.)

No naughties has become the norm now and I'm not feeling 'diety' anymore. I did have a lovely jacket potato with plenty of cheese and butter though, ooh it was good Grin

I've got plans for cauliflower cheese tomorrow, and as I made too many jacket spuds they're going to be halved, scooped, mixed with ham and yet more cheese and re-baked too. Thursday will be my next fast, there will be no cheese on that day!
