The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done on the cup a soup MrsF. As the others have said so well, the biggest thing you can do to counterract how crap he's made you feel, is to fast, do well and feel good about yourself. And look so good that he regrets every second of not appreciating you Smile. Some men are such twats. Sad

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 11:01

MrsF have you had a proper heart-to-heart with him, telling him how you feel and what you expect from him. He may have become stuck in a particular pattern of behaviour and is not actually aware of it and the impact it's having on you and the DC.

BeCoolFucker · 18/11/2013 11:03

MrsF you aren't a fool at all - please don't beat yourself up because you didn't see a highly manipulative entitled person for what he really was. No doubt he was hiding himself really well. You are probably a very lovely reasonable accommodating fair person - unfortunately it is people like this (waves hand) certain men/types will zoom in on. You were taken in by him - but that makes you open and trusting, not a fool. Now you know and you are taken in no more.

Keep your eyes open, believe what he shows you about himself, learn, prepare and remember.

Oh and fast - today you fast Grin

MrsFlorrick · 18/11/2013 11:32

Bssh. No. I've not talked to him yet. He was such an arse this weekend I felt I needed to cool off or I would just shout a lot.

Be cool. Grin Thanks.

Doing lunch for DC. They are having naice Waitrose breaded cod and naice organic chips. I am having soup. I've got three different kinds to choose from so won't feel deprived. Grin

BeCoolFucker · 18/11/2013 11:34

I'm going to have soup for lunch too (and probably dinner). It doesn't really fill me up, but it makes me feel warm & nourished.

Drinking lots of tea today so I keep about 100cals for milk for that - I find it makes all the difference in cold weather.

wildwater · 18/11/2013 11:40

Greetings fellow 5:2ers. Just checking in...fasting today. Sitting here with my cup of milky tea, which is all I will have until 8ish tonight. Then I will eat some sort of salad, probably with tuna or eggs.

I am not at all fussed about FD meals these days...I just grab something fast and easy (though I do not have the luxury of pre-prepared foodstuffs; I make everything from scratch!).

Off to yoga soon. Three times a week is fabulous. My midriff is flatter than I can remember. I tuck in my t-shirt, put a ruched top over it, everything drapes...not stretched out like a sausage like it used to be.

Good luck to all today :)

MelanieCheeks · 18/11/2013 11:45

I'm planning to try the Barenaked noodles tonight - they were the ones on Dragons Den, supposedly a bit nicer than the other Eat Water/ Slim Pasta brands. I have 1/4 can of light cocumut milk leftover from the weekend, so I'll make a spicy Thai soup with lime juice, mushrooms and spring onions.

I'm out of Bovril though, may need a lunchtime trip to the shops.

PoshPaula · 18/11/2013 12:23

I'm checking in, hello to all fellow Monday fasters. Another indulgent weekend and so I do need my FD today. I won't manage any exercise this week (work commitments) so will miss that, as it's starting to have an effect - it's great for motivation when you start seeing results isn't it wildwater!

NotAsTired · 18/11/2013 12:41

Monday FD today. Yay. Soup around 4pm so I don't get grumpy at DS. Then dinner at 6ish. Not sure what to eat yet though. I have leftover chicken from a roast. Any ideas anyone (please don't say salad, I don't do salad when it's cold)?

mrsf you must be exhausted. Gather up your inner strength and power your way through your fd today. You will feel so much better for it.

toffeesponge · 18/11/2013 13:04

Flowers MrsF. unfortunately you are married to a bully, a control freak and a spoilt brat. Everyone else is right. By eating the biscuits or anything else you will only hurt yourself, not the nob head you accidentally married. We are all on your team. He only has himself.

I was 11 7 this morning Sad. I have to get back on track. I am fasting today. I already planned too and have been out all day so no time to ear and I was also able to ignore the double decker I have in the car. That is there for emergencies or a treat. I plan to have it on Friday.

I am totally on edge today. One child is having his first day at a new school today and another is there too to see if they like it. I am an emotional wreck, teary and headachey. Just hope one is having a good day and the other likes it enough to want to stay there. It is there choice to leave their current school. I don't expect for one minute the "old" school is going to be happy at all but considering the notice we will have to pay I am sure they will get over it Hmm.

Dinner is in the slow cooker at the moment. Loads of vegetables and 2 small casserole sausages each so hopefully that counts as a fast.

Good luck to everyone. Stay focussed.

MelanieCheeks · 18/11/2013 13:55

Hugs all round I think.

NAT, shred the chicken, heat it up in some chicken stock, add some snipped spring onions. You could stir a beaten egg into it to make a sort of Chinese egg-flower soup. Alternatively, other root veg like parsnip and swede make a lower-cal version of mash. Or make an omelette.

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 15:05

Checking in. Just back from the gym. FD going fine but I'm very tired (hopefully it's just one of those things). School pickup soon then will be occupied by DD then her swimming lesson and bedtime. Then I will eat. No idea what though.

wrigglebum · 18/11/2013 15:07

(((((MrsF)))))) what an arse he is being. Would it be worth trying counselling at all? Do you think he cares for you all? He'd have to do a hell of a lot more solo child care if you split up so he should bloody well pull his finger out! Sounds like it might be time to hatch an escape plan- squirrel away some money in a secret account so you have a few months' worth and maybe see a solicitor to work out what you might be entitled to in terms of division of assets and maintenance.

Again, the 5lbs won't be fat, it will go. Keep out of the biscuit tin! It would be amazing revenge to walk away with a new fantastic slim and toned figure -Grin.

Hello to all others and good luck to all fasters. My parents are still here so no FD today. Instead I skipped breakfast to make up for a mega bit of choc brownie yesterday. Had dinner at zoo so ordered a children's portion.

rubbishfamily333 · 18/11/2013 15:15

Mrsf - sorry to hear he is being such an arse. But like the others said stay motivated! And when you finally are able to get rid of him you will be slim and amazing and single Grin and those 5lbs will probably go away after fd today xxx

rubbishfamily333 · 18/11/2013 15:17

So fd so far for me I have had 1.5 litres of water, 2 hot ribenas and 1 coke zero. 21cals in total so not bad!

Will have pork loin and veg for dinner and maybe some weetabix or something else filling later Grin feeling empowered Wink

wrigglebum · 18/11/2013 15:25

I was just reading the inspiration thread and realised I'm quite different to a lot of people with weight loss.

As long as I have a pair of scales I have never had a problem maintaining a loss. The only times I have ever piled on the pounds were when I haven't owned scales or pregnancy/breastfeeding. I have always found it quite hard to lose weight though as I do love my food.

I think I thought it was inevitable to gain weight and it stay on as you got older and after children, so it has been a revelation to realise that I can lose weight and get lean.

Talkinpeace · 18/11/2013 15:48

MrsFlorrick
Think of it the other way round.
When you kick him out, won't it be great to be looking so amazing that the nice men are hammering at your door.
The biscuits make you feel bad. So the biscuits are working with your smeghead husband.
Do not let them. Show that you can rise above it.
And breathe.

Wildwater Hope the spring is looking beautiful where you are. The
weather is finally turning cold here.

Feel odd today as I had Lunch so feel really bloated after the weekend as well. Shall avoid the scales till later in the week.

MrsFlorrick · 18/11/2013 16:59

Wrigglebum and TIP Thanks thanks Smile

And Toffee too.

Just finished dinner with DC. Calorie count stands at 666. A bit over but close enough. I will be doing my JM Ripped in 30 workout once DC in bed and if you count that I will be at 400 cals so I am claiming it as a FD!

Just need to wipe the dining table (and floor thanks DS). And bath DC and get them into bed and I can collapse in a corner as I see fit.

DD seems better so she is going to school tomorrow. Not sure DS is well enough for pre school. Still has a chesty cough. Shame as I could do with a few hours to myself. But if he isn't well, he will have to stay home with me.

ChocolatePudding · 18/11/2013 17:22

Big hugs MrsF. When you get to target and look amazing you can enjoy telling him exactly where he can go. Just hang in there and keep fasting like you did today. Put your anger towards something that will benefit you and not your H.

FD for me tomorrow. Today enjoyed salami panini for lunch and shared a huge wedge of chocolate cake (and cream) with my sis, so only half the damage Grin.

Tomorrow begins my NNN efforts so major pig out tonight

annielewis · 18/11/2013 17:39

Oh mrs F I have nothing more to add but support what others have said. My H can be an utter prick too, we are having very expensive weekly therapy to discuss why. I'm similar to you as in SAHM with a 3.5 and 1.5 yr olds. Didn't give up such a high flying career as yours tho but still hate the being reliant for cash etc. money is the one thing he isn't too bad about to be fair, just everything else!!

Hang in there, you can and will get through this. Try muttering 'this too will pass' the old MN mantra. You'll be ok. And slim too. Wink

Junebugjr · 18/11/2013 17:45

Big hugs MrsF, do mention to him he'll be doing a load more childcare if you did split, silly man. Get yourself to a free half hr with a solicitor if you feel you need to, the more knowledge you have the better, even if you intend to stay together.
I've done my first fast day this week, despite only having no bloody sleep last night. Tbh I'm too knackered to eat, so haven't been bothered.
I've had a sneaky weigh and I'm down a stone, but I have flab and cellulite everywhere despite losing a stone so going to have to do some exercise, boo hoo!!

duckyfuzz · 18/11/2013 18:15

Oh MrsF so sorry the weekend didn't go as you'd hoped, 'D'H sounds like a demanding child, wanting everything his own way and throwing a strop when he doesn't get it. Don't let him spoil your progress and remember the 5lbs is nothing really, it will be gone within a couple of days.

Was quite good yesterday, only had lunch (but a big lunch, so probably near TDEE on its own!). Today is NFD - panini with chicken and pesto for lunch, mince pie later, nothing yet this evening. FD on Weds and/or Thurs.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 18/11/2013 18:49

DH sounds like he has it made, MrsF! You need some grown-up time too. Keep going with your fd - it's something that you are doing for yourself and it is essential that you jave something just for you.

NAT may be too late for you but I absolutely, at this time of year, would have chicken with veggie mash and gravy. Yum!

First FD in a few weeks today and it has gone well. I have not, so far, felt cold and only had a little hunger mid-morning which was easily quelled by lots of tea and keeping busy. I had my ears syringed today which has left me feeling very good :) and able to hear.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2013 19:24

I've just been catching up with this very indignant thread - we're all so
Angry Angry Angry
for you, poor MrsF
He is an immature, selfish, cruel bastard. How could any dad deliberately make his own kids cry. I wish I could pass on some boxing to you, especially my favourite left-right-left-right to the lower body. He deserves a major hammering to the goolies.

It is always the risk a woman takes when giving up a really good career to have kids: you have to trust the father to be fair. Most are, but you sadly are suffering with a lemon.

Look after your interests: see a solicitor to check where you stand re interim maintenance and the house, if it comes to that. Do you think he has squirreled some assets abroad ? Could you borrow to tide you over if need be, from your parents or other family? Could a friend or family temporarily do some childcare while you look for another job ? It would put you in a stronger position if you had at least temporary income.

Whatever you do, look after your health; don't let him spoil your progress with 5:2 and how you want to live your life.
Flowers

CoffeeOne · 18/11/2013 19:34

MrsFlorrick sorry to hear about your frustrations with your H :(

Today has been a successful FD for me. The first hour was awful I was obsessing about food and had to talk myself out of eating everything in my kitchen. But I did, and didn't eat a single thing till 6pm. I had no idea I had the strength, it's so nice to feel in control for once in my life.
