The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm FDing. Easily a zero-cal FD after another greedy pig totally delicious 4500 cal Sunday: huge pan of deli pasta, choriza, creamed spinach & cheese; followed by 3 choc cheesecakes, 2 bowls ice cream, lots of pistachios.

Cuckoo I need your cooking expertise to save me scraping Turkish coffee off my smorgasbord of a kitchen ceiling.
I found a bag of the coffee, no instructions, but a 2-piece screw-in mini coffee pot from another cupboard. I put the water in the lower bit, the coffee in the sieve above, screwed on the top bit (wiped up all the spilled liquid). Since the pot is metal, I've put it on my ceramic hob and it is now bubbling.
How long do I leave it ? Will I need a new kitchen ? HELP !!!

PS The coffee is to warm up my frozen bum after a long bike ride to the UPS depot for my iPhone 5S. Your reply determines whether coffee application is internal or external.

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 19:40

God, today's FD has been hard - partly because I've been very tired (my lovely MIL was visiting for a long weekend and she talks non-stop) and partly because I didn't eat as much as I should have yesterday so there's been less fuel in my tank. Anyway, I haven't consumed any calories yet and may make it a sub-150 cal day... we'll see.

All this talk of paninis - think I'll treat myself to one tomorrow at my gym.

PoshPaula · 18/11/2013 19:52

My FD is going to be over 500 calls. Too many coffees etc to keep going. Never mind. Onwards and upwards.

toffeesponge · 18/11/2013 20:03

Hi all Smile

I have a pounding headache but I am feeling really happy as I have fasted. 2 small pieces of roast pork early afternoon just as I have had a crazy day and knew more to come and then a bowl of sausage casserole with one small sausage and lots of veg. Need to drink but should sleep better tonight and my lovely neighbour has given me the biggest box of chocolates I have ever had and I am not tempted to open them until tomorrow so it has been a good day.

DC happy at new school. DC had a good day too and also happy to go there.

MrsF - never forget how awesome you are Flowers.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2013 20:03

My Turkish coffee is now turned off and the kitchen is intact, just a few spills to mop up, none on the ceiling. I count that as a ceiling victory.

Coffee is drinkable, but seems a bit grainy and not exactly as I remembered it. However, that was 35 years ago, so maybe memory / my taste has changed.
Hmm
Cuckoo Do you think putting the water in the bottom half was correct ? I thought it safer and it transported itself to the top half after a few mins.

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 20:15

toffee what a relief about the DCs' new school. Great news. Celebrate with those chocs tomorrow!

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2013 20:18

MrsF sub-70 would be an excellent FD under the circumstances. Good that you are exercising, as it also helps with stress, so important for you.

Bssh, posh, toffee Good wrokfor managing FDs through challenges.

Well done to all of us FDers and let's look forward to a lovely (but disciplined) NFD tomorrow.
NNN until the weekend for me !

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2013 20:18

Damn iPad. Good work !

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2013 20:20

Sub-70 not recommended, sub-700 !
IPad hurled in bin

Talkinpeace · 18/11/2013 20:20

Ooh, ooh,
just posting on a different topic and found these pictures .....
www.dining.unc.edu/PortionSizesandConversions
for those still getting their heads around NFD portion sizes.

MrsFlorrick · 18/11/2013 20:23

Thanks so much everyone Thanks

Toffee. No one has ever called me awesome before Grin

Bigchocfrenzy. I hope you mean sub 700! Sub 70 I would need to
Work my way towards that.

Too tired to work out. DC in bed and I'm in bed. H is home scoffing his dinner downstairs in a huffy manner. Despite the fact that I made him that home made pizza (home made even the dough) and he is still huffy and ungrateful for some reason.

Perhaps he is on MN and has seen the slating he is getting on this thread. Yikes. Shock

Going to sleep shortly.

I have done painting sticking glueing pizza making and even froze my arse off in the garden with dC today. Am tired.

Talkinpeace · 18/11/2013 20:26

Perhaps he is on MN and has seen the slating he is getting on this thread. Yikes.
Serves him right.
Let him huff.
You ARE awesome because you are holding a household together with poorly kids and getting your food head issues under control and improving your long term health by fasting.
What's NOT to feel chuffed about.

PoshPaula · 18/11/2013 20:33

Thanks bigchoc yes let's enjoy a normal food day tomorrow but keep it healthy. I will be checking in here to seek support, as usual.

toffeesponge · 18/11/2013 20:45

MrsF you really need to talk to your husband. He has done all of the above and still has the cheek to moan about the dinner you made him? Shock

Don't make his dinner tomorrow!

eatriskier · 18/11/2013 20:45

FD over and bang on 500 calories here. Have exercised and walked my backside off today. Forgot to feed DS breakfast though which put the day into an odd routine (in fairness, DS wasn't moaning about lack of food either - I just suddenly remembered). Thermals completely rock though, first FD for a while I haven't felt freezing cold. Have invested in some more and some thermal socks which shall become my FD socks.

mrsf let him huff and sulk. he's acting like a child so maybe you should treat him like one - I suggest a time out of length appropriate to his age as a minimum Wink. Well done for getting under 700 with all that going on.

rubbishfamily333 · 18/11/2013 20:58

Well done to all fasters today

I finished on 555 cals so I'm happy with that! I hope weigh in tomorrow is positive Grin

No thankyou.
5:2 is not about food supplements and "you can get this waist"
its about looking after your body and mind for the rest of your life

(and occasionally putting husbands on the naughty step)

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2013 21:20

Toffee Good news the DCs like the new schools !

Tip Those are sobering pix, which bear no resemblance to my serving size since about age 12. You do mean NFD, sigh.
Several important food groups seem to be missing:

  • B&J / HaagenDaz
  • Bix
  • BigChoc
  • Cheesecake
  • other kinds of Cake

Still, at least I have 6-10 of different veg servings, not their 2-3.
Thank you, I have saved the link for a virtuous day.

IDismyname · 18/11/2013 21:26

Apologies if this has been discussed upthread, but I've just bought the Fast Diet Recipe Book by Mimi Spencer. It's given me loads of new ideas about what to eat on FDs.

I had Garlic Masala Prawns for supper tonight with a load of cauliflower 'rice' (Thank you to the low carb thread for that tip!).

I'm stuffed, and it all came in at about 300 cals.

Fast Diet Recipe Book

Talkinpeace · 18/11/2013 21:28

ishouldcocoa
these threads long predate that book : but you are right - its one of the better resources

BigChocFrenzy · 18/11/2013 21:37

FDs
They just need a bit of practice and patience.

When I lost my first 10lb in spring, I struggled mightily to manage 800-900 cal FDs.
After a few months on 16:8 for maintenance, I resumed a month ago and have been astonished how easy even sub-100 FDs are. 500cals are plenty for a tough 2 hrs gyming.

Amazing the power we all have to change our WOL.

Southeastdweller · 18/11/2013 21:41

MrsF nothing new for me to say but please continue to take control of your eating (well done for your 666 calls today) and stock up tomorrow with as much healthy food as you can. I'd also arrange a clandestine meeting with a solicitor if I were you. We're all here when you need us to lean on.

somewherebecomingrain · 18/11/2013 21:51

Hiya.

I have strayed. I have been far from the path of five-two-ness. Tbh it's been nice to be a little less obsessed with food and I've achieved a lot. I'm Going to give fasting a bash tomorrow but I do wonder if now is the right time for me.

Don't want to put any other breast feeders off - I've lost fully a stone and felt great and am just in normal bmi and like how I look - it's just getting mighty difficult all of a sudden.

mrsf sorry for your crisis. You deserve better. I never say LTB without getting stuck in - what is really going on in his heart?what would he do if he really understood what is going on in yours? Can he change? Maybe he can't but are you sure? Anyway serious stuff. Hoping you are bearing up.

bigchoc yes I need to do hifuc. It's exactly what I need to do. For my teeth as much as my weight.

Will watch NNN (catchy!) progress with interest.

postman cor! Skinny Malinki. Actually skinny, not merely not overweight.

Southeastdweller · 18/11/2013 21:51

Before this thread closes tomorrow or the next day, I wanted to give a shout-out to the irrepressible TIP for her post on page 29 at 21.58 on Friday night. She summed up what this WOL is really all about Flowers.
