The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

bigchoc your last post reads my mind and sounds like me. I've always found it easier to resume fasting after a break. Maybe that's what I need to do.

somewherebecomingrain · 18/11/2013 21:54

southeast yy - put it on the tips and hints thread.

Breadandwine · 18/11/2013 22:07

MrsF I wanted to add my support along with everyone else. He quite simply doesn't deserve you. Flowers

And I wanted to say that in all the turmoil going on in your life, the one thing you can do is to eat mindfully.

If you go back over all these threads, one word that keeps coming up again and again is 'control': This WOL gives you control over what you eat. Control over what you eat means control of your weight - and very often, control over your life.

As for complaining about homemade pizza - next time you have pizza, leave him the flour, yeast, a tin of tomatoes, some cheese and just let him get on with it! If he still complains, tell him there's a recipe on my blog! Grin

Talkinpeace · 18/11/2013 22:28

Oi! MrsF
When the chaps (SED and B&W) reckon he's being a twonk, he's being a twonk Grin

And yes, the magic bit of 5:2 is that it helps those of us who had a bit to lose shift it and keep it off
it also seems to help those who need to get their heads in shape ready to get their bodies into shape.
Which is really rather cool and not what any of us really expected when we watched the programme and started on this path last summer.

BsshBossh · 18/11/2013 22:41

FD over, sub 200 cals, off to bed to think what filling I want in tomorrow's post-gym panini.

Trying2bMindful · 18/11/2013 22:43

3kgs lost in 3 weeks. Am v impressed with this wol. However today I strayed... Was supposed to be a FD but I was at a work conference and I could not resist the lunch buffet. Chicken and salad was good but tut tut, rice! What was I thinking? Then it was a slippery slope to a glass of wine at the end of day drinks reception.... Oops. Any tips for next time? To avoid such excessiveNess?!

xCupidStuntx · 18/11/2013 22:46

Oh forgive me 5:2ers, for I have sinned!!
Supposed to be a fast day today but didn't work out that way at all, fingers crossed for a nice strong fast day tomorrow!!

Talkinpeace · 18/11/2013 22:54

trying2b
frankly in that situation I move my fast days - as I did today
same for cupid
do not beat yourself up. just plan, take control and pick another day to fast or two other days to mini fast ....

NotAsTired · 18/11/2013 23:22

Fast day over ages ago. 410 calories.

Tomorrow I am making peanut butter cookies for me DS as I am trying to fatten him up.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 19/11/2013 00:20

...(bursts onto thread gasping with relief that finally made it back)

...puts on Stevie Wonder - I just called to say I love you..

Hello Gang! Been genuinely busy last 48hrs - none of this 'yeah I'm so busy' whilst checking MN every hour, but actual can't even pick up my phone busy!

Had so much to catch up with. Too many posts to comment on. But ...

Firstly - Again I would just like to say thank you to all who've given me such lovely comments in past few days, and for all the support regarding home situ. I have read and appreciated them all lots. If it wasn't for fact I would probably fill the rest of this thread while you're all asleep, leaving you in limbo land, to do so, then I would respond to all individually. But I haven't missed a post, read every single word and soaked them all up, and really do appreciate it, thank you Thanks Felt bit Blush and lost for words to start. You're all lovely, svelte/svelte in training stars! X

BigChoc - Sorry about the coffee. I wouldn't have been much help though as I'm not familiar with the pot you described. Sounds nice though!
Glad you enjoyed your frenzy! Though can't work out how you manage to pack away so much, having seen your woot wooey gym pic!
Are you secretly Mary Poppins's Handbag?? Has anyone seen the both of you in same room together???.. Hmm. Thought not!!

..... and to the main event.....

MRS FLORRICK (seriousness highlighted by full use of name)
I have a different suggestion for the aforementioned biscuit tin. I think you should pick it up, and smack him round the head with it!

... and Oi! MR FLORRICK if you are reading this.... YOU are acting like a grade A twat!! What kind of selfish, childish, sadistic prick are you? A soon to be single, family-less one that's what! Seriously! Wake up man, sort your shite out!

Mrs F - can only reiterate what has already been said. You deserve far better than you're getting right now. I hope you find the inner strength to not let this ruin all of your hard work, and that you get to a solution for this current fucketty upedness you've found yourself in.

Looking on a bright side. Given your current set up, if you did find yourself going down the single parent route, the looking after the dcs on your own wouldn't come as much of shock to system would it! I keep telling myself that one at mo.
Seriously though, Good Luck. It sounds shite! Thanks and adding to the Awesome comment you got, I would like to add that I think you are a Legend! X

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 19/11/2013 00:29

Oh and 5:2!....

Didn't fast today as was so busy it was a naughty grabbing things here and there day.

Fd tmw though. Got docs first thing then going to be outside at cross country freezing my knackers off for few hours so at least the fd chills will be lost in a buy one get one free kind of set up.

Well done all losers, successful fasters and Good luck to all fasting tmw if I don't get chance to pop in, in morning.

trufflesnuffler · 19/11/2013 00:48

Ugh so I keep losing faith with 5:2...

I started 3 weeks ago and seem to go between 12st 10lbs and 13st 4lbs. I always seem to weigh more after my fast days! Is this normal?

Today I got so frustrated I ate a pizza, box of chocolates and sweets and now layed in bed feeling bloated, fat and pissed off with myself. Yes it was meant to be a fast day but will do tomorrow and Thursday instead and hope I haven't screwed it up too much.

I put on 2.5 stone after my partner died last year and I hate myself for it. I feel like I stopped caring for myself and it's impossible to lose it :/ my willpower is terrible and I know I'm comfort eating.

Sorry for rambling, just annoyed with myself.

Oh stats are

5ft 11
13.2stone today
BMI 25
Fat 25%

sweetiepie1979 · 19/11/2013 04:13

I'm beginning to think I mucked up my fd yesterday. I had liver bacon and onions the hairy bikers recipe which has butter and oil in it! Does anybody know how many calories that would be worth? I had a norumal portion with no ps and some asparagus. Oh no I hope I didnt muck it up!! Can someone help me count? Thank you

MelanieCheeks · 19/11/2013 07:51

sweetiepie cant really help without knowing the exact quantities! Were there no calorie counts given on the recipe? (I wrote to Woman and Home recently telling them off for not including cal caounts with recipes) Barely any cals in asparagus, so you can ignore those. I've been 5:2ing since January and I STILL use MFP to plan my FD foods in advance of eating them.

trufflesnuffler dont get too stressed out about what happened yesterday. If you know that chocs and sweets are your temptation, try not to keep them in the house. Or put them in the freezer on FDs.

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 08:16

sweetiepie It was your first attempt and you have a brand new baby - yes you may well have gone over with the butter and oil (possibly 200 just there!). However, I think perhaps you should be aiming for 1000cals on your fast days at the moment and reduce that when your baby is older (at least 6 months).

Honestly I don't think you should be fasting yet so just eating mindfully is a step in the right direction. Please be kind to yourself and make sure you're feeling ok. Your body has much healing to do. You haven't said if you're breastfeeding but if you are obviously you need to make sure your nourished enough to feed your growing baby too.

trufflesnuffler: I agree with melanieCheeks - don't stress about what's happened, just aim to do better next time. Remove temptation and check in here on fast days before you reach for the naughties! Sorry to hear of your loss Flowers - please come on here and ramble as much as you like - we're a supportive bunch. Please don't be hard on yourself.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 19/11/2013 08:17

Hello! My internet has been down, so I fell off the thread.

News...I've split up with P. Quite happy about it and we are getting on a lot better.

Only 10lbs left to lose now. Mainly because I've been so tired that I'm going to bed when the DDs do with no opportunity for evening nibbling! I've lost 40lbs now.

rubbishfamily333 · 19/11/2013 09:04

Well my weekend eating had a serious effect on me, fd went well yesterday but after being 10.6 yesterday I was 10.5.2 so not as big a difference as usual.

Also it is totm so that could use something to do with it, BUT I don't want to use that as an excuse Hmm must stay within tdee for the rest if the week (maybe bar one day this weekend) as I want to be a 9 something for Xmas and after being 10.3.8 on Friday morning I want to see the scales decreasing!!

rubbishfamily333 · 19/11/2013 09:05

Lucy - wow 40lbs well done! Is that all with 5.2?

eatriskier · 19/11/2013 09:07

Morning all

lucy sounds like you also lost 170lb overnight too Wink Glad that the decision has made you happier.

mrsf hope today is good for you and Mr f isn't under the patio Grin

Was it cuckoo with the mock pumpkin latte? I'm just trying out a latte with a pinch of mixed spice and it's yummy and warming. Thanks for that.

Lsv for me today. First time after an Fd I didn't get on the scales. I'm going to try to reduce to once a week and then work to once a fortnight. A little concerned I may not have the balance right for maintaining just yet.

Ds swim class has come forward so best run and pack bags/finish coffee/brush teeth/put in contact lenses/etc.

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 19/11/2013 09:28

Morning everyone

Yesterday was the toughest FD for me yet. A real hard lesson in how I've been using food as an emotional crutch. I did go through my wardrobe, and have binned some big clothes, 3 pairs of jeans, 2 skirts and some summer dresses, and that's given me an incentive to carry on. I've dropped 4 inches from my waist since september :-O

I think I came in around 650, but hoping to counteract the extra by a half FD today.

Off for my weigh-in soon, but want to shred and get a few things done around the house. Should help to keep my fingers out of the biscuit tin.

ChocolatePudding · 19/11/2013 09:58

FD today. Struggling already.
Kettle's on. I'm sure after a Brew or 2 I shall be fine.

sweetiepie don't be too hard on yourself. It's still early days and your body needs lots of tlc with nourishing foods.

trying don't be hard on yourself just recognise these occasions might require you to change you FD. I've moved mine to today as I knew I wanted to eat my cake yesterday when my sis was over. Annoying that I've not got 'one in the bag' yet this week, but at least this WOE is flexible.

Lucy fab loss! Sorry to hear about your P but sounds like you are doing well.

Off to drink lots and catch up on some work.

ChocolatePudding · 19/11/2013 09:59

Didn't mean to be so repetitive. I'm sounding like a right parrot today!

BsshBossh · 19/11/2013 10:09

I think I came in around 650, but hoping to counteract the extra by a half FD today. BennetGirl no need to do a half FD. You only went over over 150 cals. Just adjust accordingly today but enjoy a proper NFD. Then you'll be nice and ready for your next proper FD.

lucyinthesky fab loss, well done!

truffle a year since your partner passed away is still not a long time. You're still grieving. Be kind to yourself - but rather than comfort eating, are there other ways you can pamper yourself to make yourself feel better when low? I like going for a long walk (even in the rain), or going to the library or bookshop to treat myself to a new book, or a long soak in a hot bubble bath listening to the radio. Others here recommend giving yourself pedicures or manicures. Are you receiving counselling or going to a bereavement group to offload?

MrsFlorrick · 19/11/2013 10:38

Morning everyone.

Thanks so much for the advice SED. And your kind words breadandwine.

Eatriskier. No. I've not gone Brookside on mr F. He's alive and well.

Cuckoo. Thanks Smile.

Talkinpeace. Grin

For the first time ever Mr F helped, without being asked or prompted, to get DD and DS dressed and sat down for breakfast this morning. I am actually in shock. I've taken DD to school and DS to preschool and I am seriously contemplating a lie down to recover.

He was also all grateful for his pizza this morning. Hmm

First few hours to myself in over a week. Yippee!'

I fully intend to spend them completely frivoulously and do NOTHING sensible at all. No cleaning washing tidying cooking. Perhaps reading a magazine if its not too taxing. It
Is beautiful sunshine here and I should probably go for a walk. But pah. No thanks. Too much effort just now. Not even Jillian Michaels is coming out for a workout this morning. Cup of tea in hand and iPad. That's it!

BetsyBell · 19/11/2013 10:38

I've popped up a new thread when we need it here - do fill this one up first though!
