Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

i'll check out that BigChoc thank you

unless Breadandwine has a recipe?

WilsonFrickett · 22/10/2013 12:58

Just had my lunch but feeling a bit off today. Working on an extremely dense document so my default would be to reach for the chocolate. I. Will. Not. Break.

Itsaboatjack · 22/10/2013 12:59

Yum, just had lovely NFD lunch. Duck leg confit with thyme roasted squash and cabbage, we're doing our cook off for new menu and that was yummy. Now back to some proper work Grin

thinkcan · 22/10/2013 13:13

Bigchoc thanks for the comment re the different types of fuel for weights sessions vs cardio. Never thought of it that way. Gotta find a good way to fuel up for my hikes as the low sugar experiences are making me think of giving up the hikes.

Talkinpeace · 22/10/2013 13:27

Itsaboatjack
I've just thought of the perfect venue for a 5:2 meet up Wink
thinkican
are you having a big drink of water before you set out and a good glug or three every hour to keep you hydrated?

thinkcan · 22/10/2013 14:02

Tip Good point. Realize that I am always reluctant to drink too much before and during the hikes as there are no toilets along the way.

eatriskier · 22/10/2013 14:13

itsa hope you're having a special sub-500 calorie cook off too to serve your 5:2 customers Wink

Dotty342kids · 22/10/2013 14:18

oh gosh I'm cold again! I don't drink tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or anything hot and as autumn sets in I'm really finding fast days hard in terms of getting cold. I may have to start wearing my very fetching "slanket" (blanket with sleeves for anyone unfamiliar with these delightful things!) whilst at work.
I should mention that I do work at home Smile
Or my onesie! Though no actually as my desk is viewable from the front door so no good if anyone knocks at the door!

MissStrawberry · 22/10/2013 14:37

I never thought I would be complaining about having to eat more food Shock. I have just had lunch, on about 700 calories and having fish for dinner so sure I am going to come in well below my stated calories. I am wondering if I am not losing proper weight because I am not eating enough? But I am not hungry Confused.

Itsaboatjack · 22/10/2013 15:08

Anytime tip.

eat will a homemade carrot and coriander soup do for the 5:2ers?

Dotty hope you can warm up. Maybe run up and down the stairs for 5 mins.

eatriskier · 22/10/2013 15:15

MissS if you don't want to eat your calories, you can always drink them Wink

itsa Are you going to do a pizza express and label it as perfect for a fast day?

Itsaboatjack · 22/10/2013 15:20

I could do eat. I'll have to swap out the bread and butter for something else though.

Dotty342kids · 22/10/2013 16:11

haha, thanks itsaboat, I may have to resort to that on my next FD. Am ok now as been to pick up from school and will cook tea soon. It's the 1-3 slot that I always find hardest in terms of desire to eat and cold but I'm through it for today, so phew! Smile

BetsyBell · 22/10/2013 16:26

bigchoc and Tip, thank you! Chest flyes, press ups and other upper body weight stuff sounds good. I don't mind the small boobs (rarely had much going on up there) I just fancy a bit more muscle to protect the bony bits - there's very little everyday type activity that naturally builds on it, unlike legs.

My hand weights are 1.5kg and get used when I'm doing exercise dvds. I'm thinking about getting the next size up too

My shoulders are quite nice and broad enough so I don't look completely unbalanced - my fat distribution is pear shaped but my bone structure isn't - helps me not look like the 'last chicken' despite a bit of visible ribbage.

I think MN should have a random now clench your pelvic floor post on every thread - makes me exercise it everytime!

eat - I am happy to eat the calories (have a lovely bar of chocolate from Hotel Chocolate) but doesn't that go against only eating when you are hungry?

Talkinpeace · 22/10/2013 17:19

MissS If you are not hungry, don't eat, but make sure you drink plenty of water.
And have an extra glass of wine at the weekend Smile

MissStrawberry · 22/10/2013 17:25

I drink a lot of water but could maybe drink more though I find that as I am drinking it when I think I am hungry to see if it is hunger or thirst I then hardly eat. My appetite has shrunk but while that is good I know I am still over weight (5 foot 6, 11 stone 6 this morning) and would like to lose more.

Still loving no longer fearful of food and less panicky when I do feel I really need to eat or eat something for fun and not for hunger.

Talkinpeace · 22/10/2013 17:28
Grin
BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2013 17:42

MissS, eat A quick healthy nibble:
Lindt Excellence Mild 90% cocoa bar
I find 10g gives a really chocolate boost for only 1.4g carbs, 60 cals.
I break 10g into small pieces and stir it into my oat bran for chocolate porridge Smile

Betsy Work gradually up to 3kg dumbells, to see a little muscle up top. Women don't get huge muscles, don't worry - even lifting 100 kg.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2013 17:48

thinkcan It is so much easier for men to nip behind a tree ! However, I always carry tissues and I duck behind a hedge as necessary; hydration is vital when exercising.
If you're in town when you gotta go, nip into a coffee shop and grab an espresso, to help release body fat stores.

MissStrawberry · 22/10/2013 17:51

I love Lindt chocolate so will look out for it when I am next in the shop. Thank you.

eatriskier · 22/10/2013 17:59

Well DD hasn't really improved today. Swimming lessons happened for DS but DD just refused to take part and had a meltdown. They've been happening on and off all day. Now DS is joining in as he refused to have his second nap today. DD walked into my path whilst I was carrying the highchair and got a slight hit off it, which is also not helpful. Confused

Days like this don't drive me to food, they drive me to booze. As soon as DH comes home I'm having the diet white russian (baileys and almond milk). Looking forward to my wine tonight too. However I will try to remain virtuous and make dinner tonight. I will not call for pizza.

eatriskier · 22/10/2013 17:59

bigchoc 10g of chocolate? I don't believe that small a quantity exists Halloween Shock

hollolew2 · 22/10/2013 18:59

Another newbie signing in 3 weeks in and 4 pounds off so I'm thrilled! But I have had one amazing side affect. For the past 6 months I've been having the most terrible PMT this month apart from a sore tummy and a bit of a back ache I've had nothing ! No horrific bad moods or migraines . I've tried lots of diets but I think this is the one for me.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2013 19:07

eat I normally eat choc by the 100g bar, but 90% is like 90% proof booze, but for chocaholics Smile. At 90% cocoa also pretty healthy.

A small amount gives a huge chocolate feeling and is surprisingly satisfying. Even in my worst frenzy, I have never exceeded 25g of the 90% (but I have to remember to eat this and not the milk choc !)
